In the 1960s, Maeda and Tokugawa's descendants once worked in the same department of the same company(Nippon-Yusen).
In that department, there was a boss who was known to get angry a lot, and the two often got angry with him.
The joke the person was telling.
I am the only person since Hideyoshi to have Maeda and Tokugawa under my command.

Maeda Toshiie holds a special place in my heart. Taiko Risshiden 4 was my initial introduction to not only the samurai and the sengoku period, but to Japanese culture as a whole. I remember in the game when you start as Hideyoshi (then known as Kinoshita Tokichiro) as recommended for first timer players, Toshiie was the first named character you would talk to, and would guide you through the first part of the tutorial. Back then I thought he was the coolest guy ever!

A cool fact about the Maeda Clan, they ruled the richest domain of the Edo Period, Kaga, which was worth 1.03 million koku (¥307.5 billion).

True! It was under their rule during the Edo period that Kanazawa would grow to become Japan's 4th largest city, as they decided to invest in commerce instead of rebuilding military might. Their wealth even became a problem and they had to keep spending it on luxury goods and projects to assure the Tokugawa they weren't going to threaten their rule.

I'll admit my knowledge of Maeda was very limited, except for knowing the names of major figures in the clan involved in ensemble battles. This video was not only entertaining but as you say highly informative. As always I learned much I did not know and had that I knew into context. Your content never fails to impress and educate.

In Malaysia, there is an former Maeda clan holding during WW2 called Maedashima(前田岛), if you Malaysian wondering what island is it Wilayah Persekutuan Labuan. During WW2, the Japanese occupied the Labuan as mining and military base until American and Aussie troops landed in the island and lead by Douglas Mac Arthur.

I thank you for doing research of the Maeda Clan. My mother's family served the Maeda Clan and her grandfather was a Karo with a 2,600 koku stipend. The family lived in Kanazawa and I still have relatives who still live there.

Nice, love the clan videos. If I may make a suggestion: I know this wasn't the place for it, since this video was about the clan and not the person of Toshiie, but figures from that time often end up having tales from their lives that aren't/ may not be real, like the one about Keiji giving Toshiie a bath but with cold water. I think it could make for an interesting video if you selected some stories like that and discussed how likely they are to be true, from certainly not, probably not and maybe actually true. I mean, those kinds of stories do fit with the theme of the channel, and they often illustrate well how the historical figure came to be perceived with the passage of time. Just food for thought.

What a coincidence. A week ago I started to watch 2002 taiga Toshiie and Matsu, and I'm enjoying it quite a bit despite it not sticking to history in some cases. Especially I like portrayal of Oda Nobunaga by Sorimachi Takashi in it.

I'm surprised at the difference between how well taiga dramas are preserved online because while Toshiie and Matsu is online in full the taiga drama from the year before, Hojo Tokimune, is non existent digitally apart from one video containing footage from 2 different episodes.

I think also many people know Toshiie's wife, Matsu. She was not only said to be beautiful, but also quite knowledgeable in literature and a very talented in martial arts! It is said after Toshiie's death, Matsu made efforts to allow her clan to survive. She also adviced well his husband with many decisions. Also I have mixed feelings about 21 years old Toshiie marrying 12 years old Matsu, but that was Sengoku Era. Anyway, I think she deserved too a special mention here.
Also, I understand that not only Toshiie was against Ieyasu, but that actually Ieyasu would have it difficult to gain support because of him. Toshiie was the most respected of the Go-tairou, and if he hadn't died in 1599, there is a probability that Sekigahara wouldn't have occured next year, because there was no way that many people supported Ieyasu with Toshiie existing. There is even a legend that he tried to kill Ieyasu once. Imagine if Toshiie were the Western Army Commander instead of Mitsunari.

    Hey my man.
I know this may seem out of nowhere. But I would love to know the music you used in your episode 63 of the Sengoku Jidai. Particularly around the time of 18:21, near Sanada's death.
It is so heartbreaking and moving, a very good choice in music.
I checked out the links you had, but I found everything else besides that specific one.
If you could please respond I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you.

Maeda Toshiie is one of the most formidable warriors from the Sengoku period. The fact that Ieyasu had to wait till be died to make a move tells you that. Also it is said that while banished he participated in battles for the Oda army without permission, and simply brought the heads he collected to Nobunaga after the battles.

Now i don't know if this man has related by blood to the Maeda clan. but one of its nameholder, Tadashi Maeda, whom was an admiral of Imperial Japanese Navy, indirectly helping the Independence of my country, for that he provide a safe haven for independence movement to plan the declaration of Independence and help deflect Japanese attention to elsewhere at that crucial point

I dont believe there is a relation. Maeda is a fairly common last name in Japan. Toshinari Maeda, on the other hand, was in fact a member of the Maeda clan and Kozoku. He was a general and first commander of the imperial army. He was a direct descendant of Toshiie.

This isn't related, but, in your opinion...If the Tokugawa Bakufu had beat the Imperialist during the Boshin War, would the Bakufu even last that long? I have a hard time believing so, however, maybe it'll be possible. It'll have to go through some major reforms to survive. Like it was trying to do through the 1850's to 1860's.

    • @TheShogunate

I will tell you some interesting facts about Toshiie Maeda.
Toshiie Maeda had a homosexual relationship with Nobunaga Oda.
This was a common story in samurai society at the time, and the love letters that famous samurai and daimyo Takeda Shingen and Date Masamune wrote to their male lovers still exist today.
It is said that after Oda Nobunaga's death, Maeda Toshiie boasted to his samurai friends about his homosexual relationship with Oda Nobunaga.
