Back in 2021 when i decided to get myself a bike i had a budget if 2 lakhs (on road ). I was planning to stretch it by 30k and get the duke 200, but then made up my mind and bought the rtr 200 4v for 1.75L. That was a good move, finished off the loan in a year, the bike doesent demand any extra care , im hvin fun 😀. Used up the left over 25k out of my 2L budget on a good helmet, jacket, gloves......whch aftr a year and half helped me survive a crash without a scratch.

Totally agree with your point. Since 2017, my dad had this dream of geting a Jeep compass. It used to cost about 60% of his annual income during its initial launch. Due to different financial commitments he waited a little longer before making the purchase. Then came covid and he lost his previous job, he realised that there wasnt much of a time left to wait and just after he got his new job and covid cases got reduced by the end of 2021, he decided to make his dream purchase even though the car costed way more than before. We took the delivery of our Compass model S on January 2022 and it was the best day of our lives. But it wasnt all good. Previously we used own a 2009 model Suzuki Ritz, we still have it and it’s in perfect condition. It was a hell lot of fun car to drive, and my dad used to rock it while driving. In the initial stages after buying the car, it always looked like he was trying to protect the car instead of enjoying driving it. He used to go at a slower pace than he is used to and became a little more careful. It was a heartbreaking day when the car had its first minor accident, when a scooter guy came and hit on the rear bumper of our parked car, it was just returning home after having ceramic coating.
It’s been over an year since the purchase and thankfully the car is still in its showroom condition.
Although we love the car and it was in all sense a dream come true for my dad and a big motivation for me, there’s always a sense of extra care and fear of damage to the vehicle. With time these fear does come down and I realise that I feared more than my dad. He keeps on saying, he bought the car to protect us on the road. But still, before making any such decision, I would recommend you to think twice and interospect about how much risk you are ready to take and what’s the purpose for the purchase.

I could not agree with this more! Fell into the trappings of an aspirational purchase when it came to a car, overstretched, and then felt every bump on the road and every tiny scratch on the body. And, now when I'm buying a bike, I really don't want to worry about it, I want to ride, I want to live a bit of my life through it. And, this perspective just re-enforces that belief. A couple of years ago, I bought a pre-owned CBR 250R. It was 10 years old and needed some care , but the engine was immaculate and for less than 40K it was a steal. Since then, I've had immense fun on it, from weekend rides to trips. And I've spent more on riding gear than what I bought it for. Now that I can, I am ready to buy a more expensive motorcycle straight from the showroom floor.

I never imagined to be paying 20k per year for zero dep insurance renewal from the dealership. Also spending around 35k for extended warranty for 4 years was not something I was expecting above the cost of the final price of the car. I've also spent more than 1 lakh in petrol over the last year and a half. So yeah, if I had maxed out my budget while purchasing, I would have been unable to buy all this and gotten stuck now.
I am also expecting to spend between 25-40k on tyres within the coming year, so that's another extra thing to plan.

Very well articulated. Since these are aspirational purchases, sometimes we lose the sense of value and end up burdening ourselves. It is hard but who can master their minds they are the winners here. Other than the income and emi ratios, if you have equal amount of savings of what you are buying then it is much easier to deal with with great levels of confidence. For example, buying a 10l car then you should have at least 10l savings in your account at least.

Earlier i used to worry a lot about these things and would end spending unwillingly.

Lot of wisdom packed in small video. Hats off to Motorinc for similar great content on your channel.
I went against the market trend of show-baazi and bought Tata Tigor petrol. Literally No one buys this car. But it has spot on handling, steering, great suspension. Cabin comfort is great. Big boot that satisfied my touring requirements. Engine is not spunky and is not that refined. But the car is 4* safety rated. It is also very compact so I feel no stress when driving through tight spots, city traffic etc. With BH registration it costed me just ₹8L. Which is much less than 3 times my annual earnings. I don't worry too much on mileage as I know I haven't spent crazy amount upfront anyways. And I only took 40% of cost as loan, that too to save some liquidity.
I may look small, insignificant in front of other 95% financed hulking "SUVs". But I know I have made the most practical decision both requirement wise and money wise. In a way I am standing out in the crowd now and I like it 😅

It's hard to find videos of a well-articulated perspective regarding vehicles (pretty much any other topic for that matter). Really appreciate the thought process that you guys put into before starting an idea for a video. I have been wanting to buy an RE with a budget of 3L (kept aside 7L in total to make this 3L purchase, to counteract my purchase through same amount in savings). But I still want to wait and accumulate another 2-3 L before making the purchase. Because it's only when we start using a vehicle that we truly get an understanding of what we need as accessories to enjoy the ride and what we don't need. I don't want to be that guy that makes hasty decisions out of love just for the sake of it. I wanna savor every moment I spend with the bike and I don't want unplanned/unexpected expenses/dents for the vehicle to ruin my experience. Thank you once again for making such videos. More people will be able to make an informed decision before spending huge amounts on these things.

We bought the petrol 2018 Hyundai Tucson after we permanently settled in Kerala. We thought it will be our only car and we had compass, tucson, creta, karoq, tiguan etc. We bought the tucson thinking that it will be our only car. Just to protect our car, we built a seperate garage which allows 2 cars to park. This was because of the size of the vehicle, and it was damn hard for parking in small towns and very impractical for daily town commutes and my father would checking the car often after we parked the car road side. So we bought a year back 2018 santro for daily use. But after a year, it had clutch issues and power was so poor. So we upgraded to i10 nios. Now we are planning to sell the tucson for an electric car because we almost spend 10-12k rupees per month for petrol only. And we will sell the i10 after my graduation.

Its a Base variant coz single engine option - many told just base variant go get a second hand top variant? To me its a great choice coz i can fit accessories according to my taste and NEED. Second hand wont suit me. Im like, get a new one enjoy atleast five years (not an enthusiast)
But engine is very reliable and safe to an extent too
I spent on accessories which i felt much much needed (i put seat cover after 5 months. Coz my mind said many times that 'yes u have to put seat cover ')
I didnt run behind brand, i run behind reliable brand and superior after sales support
I use the car fully by spending less
Finally im super happy with my car, stress free ownership. Im not worrying about my car. It serves the purpose in a great way.

It’s amazing how some people think of impressing others with their purchase rather than to satisfy their own needs and happiness. Especially when it comes to vehicles don’t take a lot of loan to buy because vehicles are a depreciating asset, shop within your limits and enjoy your vehicle to the fullest. This is a greay advice! I had exact ssme thought process when I recently bought RE Meteor 350(after a 7-8 year pause of living without a motorycyle). I just missed the fun of riding a motorycycle. I bought it without any loan. I could have bought something which cost twice as much, but it would have brought in the exact same worries that you mentioned Kartikeya. Kudos to you guys. You guys are spreading the rare wisdom on this channel!!

Wow wow wow, we are at very much the same frequency. I also think the same. The joy you get when you do not have the stress and tension of owning something costly and that you make all use of it and are carefree is enormous. I have seen people spending on Harrier and XUVs and are afraid to do a particular stretch or hardly take it out twice or thrice in a month, what a waste of money. Rather buy a Brezza or Sonet and make full use of it and be tension free.

This is so true. If i stretch a bit, i could buy a Merc, entry level though. But I decided to go with a used Toyota for those family needs and a used Octavia to satisfy my high speed cravings. That way, i am able to fully utilise the potential of both the cars without worrying about the maintenance costs. A few lakhs for Mechatronics ? No problem. Suspension change every 3 to 4 years ? No problem.... Such things do not put stress on my finances at all.

But I feel in some cases passion defies logic. We love travelling as a family and my kids are the happiest when they are travelling so for us a a vehicle purchase is a family decision. A thing with which we will be creating many memories in the coming years.
During our current vehicle hunting we had finalized a budget after following all calculators. But during test drives we all loved something which was exceeding it by 25%. So when it came to finalizing it, both of sons told we dont need any toys for coming years lets have that car which we all loved.
Also I feel if its a thing which all of family enjoys and agrees to, then we definitely will find the funds to maitain and enjoy it fully.

@motorinc, Hello! That's a very quick and crisp advice! When buying a used motorcycle, for example, Inty 650, is it better to opt for E20 compatible one, or the older one? Which one is easier to maintain and less complex? Which one is made tougher? Also, which one can be easily upgraded for performance? Any comments from you would help me a lot. Thank you!

This is a very important video.
I didn't keep the buffer of 20% wherein now I have to manage accessories from my savings.
One calculation I followed was, (as shumi says) fix a monthly emi for yourself. Ideally could be 10-15% of your salary. 12k-13k if you make 90k - 100k wach month. Add 8-10k worth of fuel + maintenance (if you cover 1000km @12kpl).
So 25K goes towards the car. You can play with loan tenure as the interest is 2-2.5% higher than inflation rate. So ideally longer the loan, inflation takes care. Also, if you are young in 20's, in 5-7 years, 12-15k will mean not much.
Don't compromise on the vehicle. I couldn't like driving Hyundai Tata Suzuki cars (except swift) and ended up buying a pre-owned ford figo (9k kms in Warranty)

But buy seeing wife’s enthusiasm towards Panoramic Sunroof, need of Automatic Car which she can drive and seeing happiness and smile on my 4 month old new born baby while seeing the skies in friend’s car sunroof. I have a different perspective, To me it's not about how much the car or bike costs, it's what I want to do with it and running them by the cost of doing so. I've spent more than I can afford to on a vehicle but i've always made sure these are vehicles that are cheap to maintain and repair.

@@motorinc I have 3 cars at this moment, #1 is a forester that I bought 6 or so years ago, #2 is an FI zen and #3 is a fiat avventura.
The forester I bought to slowly turn it into an overlander, zen is a recent purchase that i'm going to tune into a corner carver and the fiat is a daily driver.
The Fiat is a diesel with a 1.3 multijet, very reliable and cheap to fix motor with spares found everywhere but in the body of a fiat so I get awesome stability and handling performance. I've done some minor tuning to make it slightly peppier and it's mostly for use within the city and my wife and I drive across states with that car , we have 4 dogs and safety was a critical consideration. Since this car is a mile eater, we considered cost of fuel and regular maintenance. This is a car that's driven the most hence any small issues on this get fixed right away and the cost of ownership is almost negligible. However at the time of purchase we made sure to finance it and factor in that cost and hence it's almost like renting the car without blocking any money. In another year or so we're due to replace it with a used volvo, most likely a v40 or xc60, I'm still getting into cost of parts, insurance and regular maintenance.
The forester was more of a fun project car as was the zen, so they end up having a lower cost of acquiring vs regular maintenance and investing money in building parts to lift the forester and the zen is getting ready for a complete suspension replacement and engine swap. These cars can take their time being out of order or sitting at the mechanic. My forester was at the garage for a year, 21-22 while I was building and designing the lift kit. It's soon to be in the garage again for a good time since I'm not completely satisfied with a 2 inch lift and 1 inch track offset. My aim with it to lift it a total of 4 inches and throw on some mud tyres and an additional 1 inch offset.

Perhaps that suit joker guy did not know you owned a Busa too😂. My only problem with the leather suits is they can’t be used everywhere like mesh jackets. Costs a bomb on top of that. Great finance tips there Singhee. Regarding EMI, make sure you always have 3 months next worth of its EMI and fuel/service expenses in the bank. In this age of overspend that other channels advocate, you’re a gem. I’m putting off the purchase of a less run 2016 Multistrada 1200S just for this. I need that odd 2-3L to upgrade to good helmets and riding gear. Picking up a good preowned example, like Shumis ex1200S is also a good idea, but certainly not on loan. It’s with a TeamBHP member now and he loves that motorcycle to bits, it’s his only one now. It never even got listed, saw multiple test rides even. just sold a couple of weeks after he traded it in. let Shumi know about this guys!

So car-wise. I generally don't spend anything extra other than what comes stock or add-on accessories with the car itself. So 2020 Seltos Top model came with everything I wanted/needed. The only accessories I bought were floor/boot mats and footboard 25k! Of course ceramic coating/ppf of 60k that lasted almost 3 years. And now 5th year another coat of ceramic coating for 40k. Kept aside 40k for tires. General service once a year on avg is 4000rs, thats 20k for 5 years. So approx total 5 year ownership cost comes to 1.85 ~ 2L. Total cost 22.5L
Compare that to my bikes I must have spent almost 1.91L worth of accessories on the 2020 Himalayan who's ex-showroom price itself was 1.96L. So easily a 4L bike ownership cost over 3-4 years!

Sold it for ₹80k. Had to pay the same remaining amount ₹1.5L that i paid in 2015 to buy my tb for buying classic 350 or cb350 now.
Instead i paid ₹20k extra and got by cbr250r as a third owner with 26k on the odo.
In cc perspective it might be a downgrade, but on a overall experience perspective, it definitely is an upgrade for me.

I would say it's equally important to not to underspend as it is for overspend.
I sold my gixxer due to engine issue & plan to upgrade, moved to a different city and was shaken up by the expenses. Then purchased a fz v3 as a compromise. I could have spend more as I had the funds and was not taking loan but I didn't. Overall I hated my experience and 15 months later, I sold her, suffered a loss of 65k and bought a ns200.

I used to drive my dad's splendour up until 2020. I decided to buy my own first bike and was looking at options. I chose yamaha fzs25 over duke 200. Duke costed 25k over fzs 25. I purchased riding gear and drove it without worrying too much. The bike was forgiving when i went through a massive pothole at speed! Now that im comfortable with high speeds i want to upgrade something more nimble like duke. 390 duke feels over kill for my skill level but anything less that 250cc class would bore me. Should i go for duke 250 or speed 400 or rtr 310?

  • @wikedbeast

True. Perhaps thats why beater cars make more sense. The joy of riding or driving without having to worry about these things is so much more enjoyable than the constant pain of worrying about scratches, dents, etc. I wanted to buy a 2nd hand car just for this reason, but my family wouldn't allow me to. Nevertheless I ended up buying a new one, and I would be lying if I said I don't have these worries now. But, I try my best not let those worries come in between me and my soothing drives. I let my faith in insurance, lil bit of carefulness, and god take care of those worries now.😂

I Say spend according to your salary or your Parents capacity, when it comes to vehicles , there is always a Car or a Bike in every category, say Adv, sports,or cruisers . for examle from xpulse to BMW R1250 or for sports lovers from the Great R15 to the S1000rr. I Say money is Not at all Important, the Real thing is that You Must Know what you Need. The worst or even Dangerous thing is that you have a Lot of Money but you dont know what you Need because you dont have any Dreams.

What have you become Kartikeya? You have become the exact gap-filler we have missing today between sensible auto journaling and needlessly shiny auto journaling. And may I take this opportunity to commend you on doing this in a single shot, which is a very supportive evidence that you spoke with your heart. I'll keep your advise in mind.
