Truth is these cars are 20+ years old be prepared to replace parts. I don’t wanna sound cocky but I found out the hard way and decided to fully build my engine replacing every single seal and pully.
You forgot the most important part! Make sure to buy a 30$ compression tester! It literally takes 10 minutes to check the health of the car! This will really determine the health and negotiating of the price! 4g63T models should be at 176psi on all 4 cylinders! Obviously it should be close to those numbers and no more than 15 psi a part from each other. Pretty much anything that's over 150 psi and very close to all 4 cylinders then ur good
I just recently developed a liking for these cars. I always seen clapped out shitty ones with god awful mods. But when they are nice and done nice I really appreciate them.
@2:45 I've been daily driving my 97 GST for the past 4 years. Everything he says here is about how they throw a fit ect is true because I've dealt with it many times when something is wrong. Just for anyone looking into the turbo models, my best suggestion is to do monthly inspections yourself. If something is wrong, park it and leave it until it is fixed. From my experiences, one thing goes, 3 other things get effected and then boom those 3 things dwindle under the pressure. Here's a list of things to check/replace while buying or owning a GST or GSX. 1. Compression tests are a God send. Use them and you will know the immediate health of the engine. 2. Rust is a common issues with these cars especially outside of CA. My GST wasn't even safe and the original owner bought it in CA. People check certain common locations for rust, I'd suggest checking the WHOLE car. 3. Do ALL radiator hoses and vacuum lines to save yourself early head aches. 4. Check for any obvious leaks. I've noticed that a lot of people tend to forget about valve stem seals and valve cover gaskets on all cars. Coolant leaks seem to come from the heater core in these cars, because they are an absolute bish to replace. The heater core itself makes you take apart the dash just to get to it and the hoses are a pain to replace because people usually don't replace them when the the heater core fails due to age. Mine did so I have bypassed the heater core every since. 5. While driving make note of the oil dipstick level and check it again after driving to ensure you didn't lose any. This goes back to #4 with the valve stem seals or it could sometimes be the turbo burning your oil. 6. The 2nd gens suffer a crank walk risk. A lot of people have disabled the neutral safety to lower the risk by a lot. If the car you end up buying doesn't have this done to it that should be your first step. 7. Schedule maintenance is REQUIRED. Say it with me now, I WILL FIX EVERYTHING FIRST BEFORE I ADD POWER. Hope those tips helped! I'm the 3rd owner of my current GST and she's happily purring at 197k on the original engine and transmission. The original two owners brought her back to life after sitting in a garage for 6 years. I intend to keep her running especially since I've dumped 3x her worth in parts. I do all the work myself and it's something I suggest you should do as well. If you have to take one of these cars to a mechanic, make sure it's someone you trust with your LIFE. Otherwise, you will have a very sad car. These cars act like small children when something is wrong and will throw a temper tantrum. PLEASE DO MAINTENCE REGULARLY. I hate seeing these at the graveyard...but then again, ya boi needs to keep his running so :P
Just a tip, be aware of the massive amount of vacuum lines in the GST and GSX models. From fuel pressure regulators to EGR valves, there's a lot of them, and a lot of people will do vacuum line deletes incorrectly.
Another tip to those who are new and want to start adding bolt ons.... NUMBER ONE MOD TO DO FIRST *INVEST INTO THE ECU* ECMTUNING, also known as ecmlink/dsmlink. Purchase this first, and then bolt ons, mods, etc.
Hard to find ones in good condition, even if you buy a good one it is still a vintage car, not meant for speed or anything crazy, just an old good looking car. Not a lot of space for many modifications either. Def. A beautiful car but thats really it.
my neighbor also has one but i’m not sure what model bc it’s debadged and idk much ab it. he has cosmetic mods but idk ab any performance mods. it’s been sitting for so long, never touched and i am 16 and i want to get it bc it looks nice but he does not even touch it so i’m pretty sure it’s unreliable and idk if it’s worth getting
I m looking forward to buy the exact same car when I turn 18 would you recommend it for a first car? Also can u tell me what you like and don't like at the car. Thanks
I'm on my 3rd Eclipse. I've owned a '90, a '98 and my latest one is an '07. I'm a musician and the Eclipse is the only coupe with enough cargo room for all my gear. The '98 was indeed very leaky! The '07 is holding up pretty good so far.
Just brought a 01 GS model back to life. Replaced radiator plugs coils cleaned iac valve throttle body and intake. Change all engine/ trans mounts new headlights and mirrors. Running pretty good compared to how bad it was when I got it. Paid 450 bucks
I had a GSX and a Eagle Talon awd turbo had both at the same time had them over 10 years never had a problem with either one. They were the most fun cars I have owned. I am 71 years old and have had all kinds of hot cars. I now have a 1966 GTO old school but still love it.
For the 420a people. Stopped or right turn is 1st gear, left turn or city streets is 2nd gear, and 3rd is for getting on the freeway. Fourth is for passing on freeway and Fifth is for cruising at 80. I’ve had a 97 RS for 19 yrs and 200k miles. It’s at 275k now. My commute is through the Cajon pass trying to do 80mph and I get over 30 mpg. The out of the ordinary problems are: Evap leak caused by emergency roll over valve on top of gas tank. Cover hose barb with epoxy to seal. Trans is weak. Early 2000’s neon magnum have HD trans. (5 speed) Had engine rebuilt at 175k. Change radiator and exhaust manifold too. Recently the Cracked exhaust manifold destroyed my $350 catalytic converter. After a new cat I blew my intake manifold seal. Now I’m watching eclipse videos on TH-cam because it’s been reawakened. The only thing I didn’t do myself was rebuild the engine. If you don’t have as much fun under the car as you do in the drivers seat it might not be for you. But if you do, get an obd2 scanner with live data stream and a copy of the oem service manual. $17 on eBay. I’m hearing things about the head gasket leaking oil onto the back of the engine also. I saw the sludge. I think it’s real.
I had a 1994 Eagle Talon DL 1.8 manual , bought in 1995 with only 20,000 miles. Ran the shit out of it for 9 years. Loved it,. Only had replace the alternator. Replaced the timing belt after 100,000 for precautions. Ran great.
Mmm idk about you stating 420a being more reliable then a 4g63 on the eclipse. After 11 years of daily driver and beating on the road course and now swapped into a fwd 4g has been reliable. Just do maintenance before mods I’ve always used oem mitsu parts. Great build none the less but just wanted to state that from a dsm owner whose owned 10 gsx/ tsi awd, 2 gst’s and two evo ix’s in the past.
When buying a used car please bring a scan tool to check for any trouble codes. Also, check if the title of the car is branded as refurbished, salvaged, or rebuild.
The one i had was a 97 gst, loved that car. My 3 years owning ot i was fighting cooling system issues and the power steering rack went out lol. Leaked fluid and eventually seized the pump. I drove with no power steering in that heavy ass car for years. The last nonth i owned i fixed everything. Then i would barely pass smog. I ended up selling it and buying an evo lol, but i loved that car so much. Hopefully the kid who bought it off me treated her right. Btw it had almost 200k before sold.
I'm in the process of obtaining a non running 95 GS coupe. Been looking at it on Facebook marketplace for a while, and finally decided to inquire about it.
In 1995 I got my first car a 90 GSX. It was easy to make quicker and when I traded it for my dads 95 mustang GT a couple years later he proceeded to upgrade it even more than I had previously done. After doing bolt ons to my 5.0 we raced several times and he destroyed me which was expected.
I have a 2007 eclipse gt with the 3.8 v6 automatic front wheel drive. I have owned it for 7 years and it has been very reliable. In fact we have put this car through hell even climbing steep hills and goat trails. This is the best designed vehicles i have ever owned. Everytime i can't figure out how to fix something, we think about how well thought out the car was and logic usually points the way. After 8 years i still love this car.
i currently have a 2g eclipse gst, i have done head gasket, cylinder head rebuild, water pump, gaskets/o-rings all around, all belts, new alternator, new battery, competition stage 2 clutch with new fork & pivot, lightweight flywheel, currently on 2nd trans, wheel hubs all around, bc coilovers, fuel pump, fuel filter, thermostat, radiator, iacv, heater hoses all around, a few other things... MY ADVICE IS!!! if you are thinking of buying one, make sure you have a back up car and keep this as your weekend car just to have fun and do all the maintenance first because these are old and are getting more rare, yes they have alot of small issues but if you do everything right and learn from them you'll break necks and most importantly you will have a bad ass rare car that will be fun to drive and will have you with a smile all the time... i also own an srt4 so follow me on instagram! 🙄😄 Dsm_spyder
Here at Mitsubishi, we get it. In these trying times, it can be really hard to commit to a color scheme for your classic, mid-noughties racecar. So we're working in partnership with West Coast Customs to provide a livery for anything life can throw at you. Bad hair day? There's a livery for that. Stuck upside down in your rhinestone gravity boots? There's a livery for that. Dad screaming you were a mistake long into the night again? You guessed it. The Mitsubishi Eclipse. Adding yet more color to an already colorful existence.
One of my dream cars fr I’m barely getting into cars and I’m starting to fall in love with this car I really like how it looks. Wish I had the knowledge needed to own and work on one of these but by the time I do there might not be any decent ones left tbh.
Man I love Dsm's! I owned the 2-1gs awd 4 bolt rear end and a 95 gst 2g fwd with a 1g engine. First cars I really learned how to modify n work on. Loved every bit of owning those cars. Way to go man awesome channel. Not to many left out there that people still rep 🤙🏾 I hate I got rid of those. Should've kept my 1g it was a gem. Did all the bolt ons and the 20g upgrade back n 98 high school days 😁👍🏾
I have my eclipse for almost a year, 1999 GS model. Hoping you could help me go from a FWD to a RWD conversion in a video. Love your channel Miguel keep it up!
I have never had a car, and have no knowledge about cars, but I really want an Eclipse. As a kid I fell in love with this car (actually the 3rd gen) while playing Midnight Club 3. Tough that it requires this much investment, I hope one day I get to have one.
I know I´m late but I wanted to add this. I´m from Germany and i got an Eclipse. It has a naturally aspirated 4G63 that has 146HP stock. I don´t know if you can get them everywhere but if you want to look it up it´s a 1995 2GA so before the facelift.
Own a 4g Gs sport, even though it’s not the same as the 2g treat then the same as the 2g. They are old, rare, and discontinued, as well as very mod friendly having a cast iron block 4g69. Let’s keep these cars alive !
My first car happen to be an Eclipse. A 1998 Eclipse RS and some do come with sunroofs and mine has one. Here's another fun fact that I just found out, not all GSX or TSI AWD models come with ABS... Another thing to check when buying, the gas pedals on these can get weak and wiggly and that's a sign the car was abused in some way (rough on the car, raced hard, etc)
had one back in high school when fast and the furious came out and oh boy everyone just loved the car, it was just the gs model but i have a lot of fun with it changed the wheels, paint, wing, suspension, and i sold it after 5 years with it. now I'm married with 4 kids and I'm getting old so i just found a GST model and I'm about to but it, ready to drop some cash on it like never had.
It’s been very hard finding a GSX, and most will go for over 6k in ok condition on Craigslist. Most clean ones will go for over 10K on DSMTuner and Bring A Trailer. And it’s very rare to see one being sold. I’m still looking and am prepared to pay 10K cash for the right car. I miss my red stock exterior 97 GSX with a built six bolt and tdo6 20g so much from 20 years ago. Such a beautiful car, ran low 12s on pump gas.
I've always loved your work. Im glad that you're sheding light on the evo swap in the states. Its been pretty popular in parts of asia for while. Its a damn shame however that the price of evfo 4g63s have skyrocketed though. I do think you downplay the 420a a little bit. A build top end and a solid clutch can give you some solid numbers and over 300 to the wheels safely enough.
Picked up my own 96 2ga gsx project a couple weeks ago!! Finally got her running... pretty rough lol but give me some time. Sadly looks just like the green gst, but much more rust and mismatch fenders and side skirts... so if yall ever think about sending her to the yard.. let me buy those monarch green body parts lol. Good looking on the control arms, I'll have to order a set. Appreciate the tips from you and the homies!
I have a gsx, well my dad bought in in 95 and it broke last year and was just sitting. I did a bunch of research and recently started working on the car. Such a headache but Ik it’s worth it. 4g63 awd is amazing. I had to replace the oil pan gasket and is that an oof. You gotta take off the front axles transfer case exhaust. Worst part is idk if there is another oil leak on the timing side.
ECLIPSE NATION!! 🙌🏼. Love you channel Bro. Always providing great content. I don’t have a DSM but I do have a 4th GEN MODEL. Modifying the hell out of it! Keep coming w/ them BANGERZ!!!
I've owned my '02 spyder GS ragtop since '02 and it seriously runs like new. Only the interior is looking a little ragged...dashboard and seat, and have replaced the top twice, going on 3 soon.
This video makes me feel better now, I have owned my GST for 16 years now and it's been a constant fix it, race it, break it and repeat type of situation. tho every time I brake it, I just keep upgrading parts on it. so I started with a stock GST Spyder, now I have a Built, AWD GST-X Spyder lol
I know right? I was wanting to get one as a first car but it doesn't seem like a good idea considering I need something reliable. Still my dream car. Hopefully they don't continue going up in price so maybe one day I can get one.
I wish you made this last year. I’m the guy who bought the DSM in Florida 😭. Luckily the car was as advertised outside a few minor issues. As always, great video man. Love this channel for real.
also, foamy or anything strange on the bottom of the oil cap is normal especially with E85 cars. They just need some times to come up to operating temperature and will evaporate
Mine was $500. Well... RS automatic. But it is 1999 and really decent condition actually. All I care about is it not being rusted. I hate rust. Rest can be... fixed. ;)
Got a 1997 GS Spyder with 55k miles for 6k. It’s the most mint condition Eclipse I’ve ever seen in my life. This old guy kept it in the garage every winter, everything is all stock.
My 94 gs is temperamental 😂 day we got her she showed us why she was parked fixed it which was fuel pump and now it’s doing the same thing it was doing 3 weeks ago
I picked my 2G 99 GS Spyder out of Florida for $600 and hauled it back to Oregon with 92,pool on it. One good source out there for parts is a guy in Northern Hollywood (California) that buys them all when he sees them! I've picked up a few parts from him, he's pretty fare on his prices!
Hey, I have been following you for quite some time on Instagram and found you on here. I really have to say that you guys have one of the best looking Eclipse I have ever seen. I wish these cars where more comon in germany and wouldn´t sell for these huge prices here. It is my dream car and soon enough I will drive one, keep it up and stay healthy!
Ahh another crazy person with a quirky eclipse as a dream car. Of all the cars in the world, my dream car somehow ended up being a 2g eclipse gsx. Hopefully I have the opportunity to get one someday.
Bro you took too long to make this video I already bought one just an GS 99 I've been wanting one since I was in 6th grade I'm an adult I can buy it now
@@MiguelDsm so im selling my 98 pontiac bonneville right. i've found a 99 eclipse spyder gs convertible that im really in love with. would you recommend the car? its for $2250
I plan on buying a 1995 Eagle Talon TSI AWD that needs TLC, but overall is mostly mechanically sound. Babied by previous owner, and I'm paying $350 for it since I am disabled, and need a good looking car that I can commute in, work on, and take to the track on the weekends :)
This was such a great video! So informative for this car I definitely learned a lot from this. I be will recommending this video for anyone into this car!
Another difference between the GS and GST is the GST has a rear window wiper. GS does not, or at least on the 3rd gen that is the way it is but thats from GS to GT
Buying a rs or gx. Painted door handles and mirrors but no sunroof but idc as its 900 im getting it. Shock tower rust though, and some minor rust on frame etc. Once i get it, doing a engine flush, trans flush, and buy a clutch for future
Recently made an offer on a 110k mile silver 99 gsx manual. It’s very clean and I’m really excited, what type of “maintenance” do you mean? Just the typical stuff or anything specific to the platform?
I'm buying one soon. 4k for a black 96 eclipse gsx. I like this car better than the evo which is 20k. Glad not too many people know about the eclipse gsx or they might cost just as much
I always wanted one and still do. I had two choices a ss Monte 2001 or this one😭 I’ve picked the ss but sooner or later I’m getting one. Thank you for the informal video soon I’m gonna know what I need to look for.
One thing he didnt mention is the difference between the GS and GS Spyders. The GS Spyder comes with a N/A 4G64 and is fwd and the GS-T Spyder is the same as the hard top
WHO ELSE HAS AN ECLIPSE ALREADY BUT IS WATCHING ANYWAYS? 😂

Have you done the ecu
@@Ryan_1997 tune it? not yet but if i ever do it will be when i upgrade turbo, pump & injectors
Broooo this was so helpful i’m buying my first gsx tomorrow as a project build
Which one did you get? I wanted a gsx back in the day but got a 350z instead
I still like the eclipses though
Lol "chexk your gas gauge to make sure it isnt over heating."
Its all love. I enjoyed the video.
watching this from Australia, with an iced cream tub full of tears.
Buyers beware it is super good! You meant! 👍
FYI, you can get an RS with a sunroof. My 98 RS had a sunroof
Yup! I didn’t add the dealer options
My 99 rs has a sunroof
My dad was not lying when he said Eclipse's have a lot of problems, I think I'll stick to a Miata😂
I went with the third gen eclipses. I've owned a gs, gt and gts. All ended up being reliable as hell with minimal problems
1995 eagle talon my dad gave it to me and I love it
I had a 1994 Talon DL, ran shit out of it for 9 years...loved it
Own a 4g Gs sport, even though it’s not the same as the 2g treat then the same as the 2g. They are old, rare, and discontinued, as well as very mod friendly having a cast iron block 4g69. Let’s keep these cars alive !
Same I own the same car as u bro
Rather wait for the right one then get a random one that’s needs a whole rebuild
I just bought a gs yesterday and at 6 am i see this video
Car is gone now man :/ congrats on getting yours running though!
Hows it going?
I had a 96 eclipse RS and it had to be let go but I’m looking for another one day when I do get another one I will never let it go again
ECLIPSE NATION!! 🙌🏼. Love you channel Bro. Always providing great content. I don’t have a DSM but I do have a 4th GEN MODEL. Modifying the hell out of it! Keep coming w/ them BANGERZ!!!
lo key bought a gsx with low miles for 1,800 yesterday lol I'm excited
Where did u pick it up from? I been trying to figure out where to buy mine
I just bought a ‘99 GST 2 weeks ago as a little project car, love it so far
Congrats!
Miguel Dsm thank you!
If youre going to dump money with performance parts, invest into the ecu first before buyin all the good stuff.
Ecmtuning>ecmlink v3
I've owned my '02 spyder GS ragtop since '02 and it seriously runs like new. Only the interior is looking a little ragged...dashboard and seat, and have replaced the top twice, going on 3 soon.
This video makes me feel better now, I have owned my GST for 16 years now and it's been a constant fix it, race it, break it and repeat type of situation. tho every time I brake it, I just keep upgrading parts on it. so I started with a stock GST Spyder, now I have a Built, AWD GST-X Spyder lol
A little over a month ago, I got a 94 Eclipse GS
Do more videos on the rs I got a 99 that's giving me some problems
I had to come back to this video, they are going up in value 🙌
I know right? I was wanting to get one as a first car but it doesn't seem like a good idea considering I need something reliable. Still my dream car. Hopefully they don't continue going up in price so maybe one day I can get one.
Yes ALWAYS make sure "your gas guage isnt overheating" 🤣 stuff happens man keep making awesome videos
Oh damm 😂😂😂
Almost done with my awd conversion, you've been a huge help and inspiration during all this
Good to hear 🤘🏼
I own a 97 GST, hope to save some money to ship it to this guy, hopefully he leaves like his after doing everything 😍😍
I never thought of getting one of these but this is a great videos for people actually looking for a gsm 👌🏼
buying my mitsubishi eclipse D30 beginning of 2021 (january) suuuuuper hyped :D
Been wanting a dsm for like 2 years and im just waiting for the right time
Hope you get a good one!
I have one I’m the only owner 1997 gsx with 43000 miles live in Connecticut
@@walksfar68 I also live in Connecticut and I kinda want one as my first car
Even though by the time I get one I’ll be driving it down for college
Is it just me or are 2g owners like the nicest car enthusiasts ever?
I have an 07 Eclipse Spyder GT, low miles still 🎉❤ love my car!!!!🎉
I wish you made this last year. I’m the guy who bought the DSM in Florida 😭. Luckily the car was as advertised outside a few minor issues. As always, great video man. Love this channel for real.
Glad to hear you got that one! Take care of that gem
Miguel Dsm definitely!
also, foamy or anything strange on the bottom of the oil cap is normal especially with E85 cars. They just need some times to come up to operating temperature and will evaporate
Mine was $500. Well... RS automatic. But it is 1999 and really decent condition actually. All I care about is it not being rusted. I hate rust. Rest can be... fixed. ;)
Kris Bendix that’s how much I got mine for but it was broken when I got it and fixed it for free
Got a 1997 GS Spyder with 55k miles for 6k. It’s the most mint condition Eclipse I’ve ever seen in my life. This old guy kept it in the garage every winter, everything is all stock.
Did you ever start having idling issues or the car dying at low rpm’s?
Can’t wait to pick up my gst. my brother bought a gsx and I fell in love with it instantly😍
Open a separate savings account
"For parts" 😅
They’re a lot of Mitsubishi’s in my state especially Eclipses and it’s growing on me.
I’ve owned my gs for almost 3 years it’s a great car love it
how much miles? i wanna buy one for my first and i like them just wanna make sure they realiable and fast
"Super Old Cars" haha from the Mid & late 90s I deal with cars from the 60s haha
Bro you took too long to make this video I already bought one just an GS 99 I've been wanting one since I was in 6th grade I'm an adult I can buy it now
99 GS gang 🤘🏼
@@MiguelDsm so im selling my 98 pontiac bonneville right. i've found a 99 eclipse spyder gs convertible that im really in love with. would you recommend the car? its for $2250
The eclipse is gonna be my first car :), just not a big fan of the rear lights🥴
I think the rear lights are what make the car iconic
Rear lights are the last of your problems kid
I plan on buying a 1995 Eagle Talon TSI AWD that needs TLC, but overall is mostly mechanically sound. Babied by previous owner, and I'm paying $350 for it since I am disabled, and need a good looking car that I can commute in, work on, and take to the track on the weekends :)
This was such a great video! So informative for this car I definitely learned a lot from this. I be will recommending this video for anyone into this car!
I have a 2008 Eclipse GT, but I really love the Gen 2!
Mitsubishi eclipse and evo's are my favorite out the Mitsubishi next to the 3000 gt. But I'm not a racer but I still want one of these car one day😁
Lmao what’s up with the girl In the pink hair in your car? 😂
Good catch 👀
Another difference between the GS and GST is the GST has a rear window wiper. GS does not, or at least on the 3rd gen that is the way it is but thats from GS to GT
Buying a rs or gx. Painted door handles and mirrors but no sunroof but idc as its 900 im getting it. Shock tower rust though, and some minor rust on frame etc. Once i get it, doing a engine flush, trans flush, and buy a clutch for future
Got an eclipse for 500 dollars drives fine replaced power steering pump brakes and did basic maintenance.
Or as I call mine the "GSTX" which was a gs-t converted to gsx
I have a 2004 GST and it’s my daily and my first car and i have plans for it but someday I hope to own a gsx
Recently made an offer on a 110k mile silver 99 gsx manual. It’s very clean and I’m really excited, what type of “maintenance” do you mean? Just the typical stuff or anything specific to the platform?
Have the timing belt changed ASAP!! Or spend $1400 of engine repairs
Dat Bluetooth muffler tho
If you have any other tips for future dsm owners, make sure you comment down below for people to see! Have a great day guys 🤘🏼
Miguel Dsm DONT DO IT 🤣
Miguel Dsm run while you can guys LOL
Buy a GSX right away, do not bother with FWD versions.
Do OEM maintenance before mods
I need dashboard for my 3g eclipse plz help
thx for the vid, I know this has been posted 2 years ago but im buying an Eagle Talon TSI FWD this weekend and this helps a ton
I have an Eclipse 3G with the 3.0L 24-Valve and a 5 speed with a hard top.
One thing he didnt mention is the difference between the GS and GS Spyders. The GS Spyder comes with a N/A 4G64 and is fwd and the GS-T Spyder is the same as the hard top
If anyone was wondering the song at the beginning is water works
