4Runner TRD Exhaust Sound!! Revs and Idle.

- The new 2020 4Runner TRD Pro comes with this new TRD exhaust system and man does it sound good! The audio I was able to pick up is great but still does not do it justice. Again my parts department at my Toyota dealership said this new 4Runner TRD Exhaust costs about $759 (not including install). What do you all think? I really like the exhaust tip on this, the black chrome looks really slick. I also do like the fact too that the exhaust has a side exit as well. I know that isn't the absolute best for offroad, but it does help with some of those exhaust fumes heading back into the cabin of the 4runner.

Muffler is different as well. Allowing more air to pass through. So not just a tip
I don't know about everyone else but have owned a few loud sport cars, I enjoy how quiet and mellow the stock exhaust of the 4runner is, it helps one emerge with the nature, while driving on a trail; and honestly anything you could possibly do won't make it sound dramatically different or as good as some muscle v8 or diesels. Besides sound loud without significant power is not my style.
I also like the setup of the stock muffler a little better for clearances than the TRD.
I just took my pro exhaust off for a new sr5 exhaust. So much quitter and enjoyable to drive.
Just added to my 18 TRD ORP today.
Along with the TRD CAI I love the sound! Gained +2.7mpg so far with CAI and we’ll see now w the exhaust also added. This I believe is how all the Off Road Premiums and Pro’s should come from the factory.

Thanks for posting the vid Jon, I've heard a lot of people on the forums complain about the drone from this exhaust. Personally. it's too loud for me, but I'm very happy with my Borla Touring cat-back. Definitely nice to actually see vids of this posted, I know a lot of people wanted to hear it.

It terrifies me that someday we may not have any more real motors that sound like a purr. Electric vehicles that drive themselves is not a fantasy for me. I like the sound of the exhaust! Especially when you rev the engine. Hi Jon!

Drone at all?
There is a little droning at highway speeds, but I tune it out pretty quickly. Not loud enough to make it uncomfortable to talk in the car.

Thanks for the vid! I’m getting this installed right now on my 2022 4runner. I had an aftermarket exhaust on a 2003 impala (3.8L v6) and while I liked that, it was a unique sound for sure - nothing like a v8 would sound but still better than a 4cyl. Hard to describe, it was a really bassy sound but lacked throatiness. But I really like the sound of this exhaust when considering the 4Runner has a 4.0L v6.

You really can't hear the exhaust come alive until 3k rpms. Anything below 2500 rpms it's pretty subtle.

They sound better from the outside, I find it extremely annoying from inside, sad but true i wish it was one feature my TRD pro did not have.
I have the TRD pro muffler and love it but I am now trying to find away to cut the drone sound that you hear inside the cabin.
Let me.know if you find a way I'd like that too since it can get annoying when you go over 80 miles

so perhaps my exhaust has a hole b/c the decibels in the cabin are ridiculous AND it is not as detectable outside as it is inside. the longer the truck idles/warms, the quieter it gets, but it is ear shattering the first minute of acceleration.
So will this fit on my 2018 TRD off road? Because my stock exhaust tip goes straight back. This exhaust sounds perfect
Recently bought the 2019 TRD Off Road Premium with all intentions of installing the Borla S-type, then began to hear about the TRD exhaust. First said it was discontinued then you did the video. I started over, found it, research for pricing, found it for $609 + 40 for shipping from a dealer. But, the critical question continues, is there a drone? Borla advertises none. Both are about the same price but I prefer the black side discharge.

Hi I just bought a 2019 4Runner TRD Pro and there is no TRD exhaust installed. Is this exhaust system new for 2020 only, or has this been on the TRD Pro for previous model years? Thanks
Again, I do not believe the TRD exhaust was available in 2019 for the 4Runner, Period. They only started the exhaust in 2020, and initially said it would not fit the 2019. But it does!

I've had Magnaflow on three vehicles and the TRD on two and the Magnaflow has a deeper tone and sound IMO. I like the straight out the back design of the Magaflow versus the side discharge of the TRD as well.......YMMV
Considering this vs. the Borla Touring. Question: I know the Borla CAT back set up uses bigger diameter tubes, so you get some benefits in regard to power. Does this system also use larger diameter tubing or does it also give a comparable boost in power?
One question. Don't TRD Pros come with the TRD exhaust? Maybe the do now (2024), but not when you got yours? I just bought a TRD ORP in Undergournd and am putting the TRD PRO Exhaust on this weekend (Hopefully). I am sort of old and fat so not looking forward to getting on my back to get this done, but am going to try.

How come nobody is talking about the remote start on these new 2020’s! I think that is such a great feature but no one is really talking about it I know limited and pro has it I wonder if the venture does to! Or maybe all the new push start has it.
Toyota have had it for a while. This has it too. But it shuts off when you open the door so it’s kinda lame. Imo. It also has Toyota connect which’s through a phone you can control your car. That option is very cool

I didn’t know that it turned off when you open the door humm I guess for theft reasons I’m assuming🤷🏻♀️that’s ok I manly thought it was great to cool down the inside in summer and warm up in winter before I hop in so I guess it will still get it done. I herd something about the phone app that makes it to wear you can control the 4Runner I wasn’t sure if it was true so ya that would be really cool 😎 😬thanks again for the reply 🙏🏼

I have the toyota remote start for my 2019 trd pro, i just went for the basic one that uses the oem key and a long range remote thats good for 1km or w.e.
i opted out of the cellphone transmitter (so you can start & unlock from anywhere there is cell service from any distance) due to lack of trust in the securty of the system and the fact that most of the places i go has no cell/poor reception. so far the key fob works perfect for me and if the car is out of sight i use the long range remote (it plays a jingle when the car receives its signal)
A drive by would be good for external sound clips. 👍

Just retired. Retired civil service and retired from the military in 95; was an enlisted avionics guy and instructor and went AECP halfway through my career as an officer and engineer. Fell in love with the Calvary Blue but you’re channel drove me to pull the handle last year. Had to go to Albany, GA to get mine though because dealers would not give up there allocation. Love your channel though. Very informative. Keep doing just what u do so well 👍

I have a TRD Pro with this is exhaust and I HATE it. It sound great outside but in the cabin in drones awful! I am trying to find a different muffler or just swap to OEM.

I have a 96 4runner with a Borla cat back exhaust system. I didn’t buy it for sound but the durability of 304 stainless. The exhaust is over 20 years old and looks new, sounds great
I had a magnaflow system in my 95. It replaced the rusting muffler as well
Why did they go with side exit, rear exit has higher ground clearance and looks cleaner.

Congratulations! The lasfit la series I had in was great. HID is best but if you want to not drill a hole in your dust cap you need led
I second the lasfit la series (bought them bc of Jon). Go check out his playlists and watch all of the lighting videos. He does a great job showing you the pros/cons of everything and showing how to install it all. Beware though, as soon as you change out the headlights to led, you’re gonna want to make all the lights led hahah congrats on the new 4Runner!

Not sure. I mean it is for a 4.0 so the muffler will pair fine. Just depends on hanger placement I guess

I believe it's the same muffler used on the trd tundra, the only difference appears to be dual tailpipes on the tundra and a couple extra cylinders!
THE trd 4runner muffler has dual outlets with one capped off!

Probably going to remove it from my 2020 4Runner Limited & put the stock oem muffler back on, the noise is too obnoxious in the cabin - the wife hates it and it gets annoying after about 30 minutes of driving. Sorry TRD JON but I can't recommend this mod. I installed a K&N Air filter for the Stock Air Box (Not a CAI kit) and with my stock muffler I noticed right away an increase in MPG of 1.6 miles with my Pedal Commander set to Sports Mode +2. Once I installed this Cat Back Exhaust my mileage started dropping to only .4 MPG gain. Not sure why but my 4Runner is still new with only 1,100 miles on it. I also had it professionally installed by the owner of Valley Muffler here in Las Cruces, NM. He did mention he had to work on repositioning the hangers so the exhaust tip would not lay on the plastic behind the right rear wheel.
You are very correct that the drone this produces in the cabin going over any topography at speed will annoy any and every human inside the cabin. Thats a fact. Trying to find a remedy to eliminate this “drone” cabin noise

We can't stand the overbearing drone of our 2020 TRD pro exhaust up in the hills where we live and looking to get rid of it.
Some folks have wrapped the muffler and or added a resonator from a custom muffler shop to reduce the cabin “drone” noise. Not sure if it works personally
