    The fact that this thing is missing so many features, uses an old engine, has had only minor cosmetic changes in the last 13 years, but still increases in cost year over year is INSANE. All the tooling and R&D is paid for now. This thing must PRINT money for Toyota.

      It's really not that insane. People want a vehicle the government can't shut off on a whim. The older the technology the better.

      Toyota is a proof that reliability > technology. I'm keeping my 22 years old Toyota because it has everything I need for a car. If I need more there's always high quality aftermarket parts & accessories in the market.

      So many of the really old designs sell well these days, because a lot of people want and love something simple and reliable...yet no carcompany REALLY goes down on that and serves this market. Such a pitty. I assume they get regulated to hell by governments.

    I was a mechanic from 2008 to 2017, and the 4 runner has basically been the same vehicle since 2005. The Toyota 4.0L V6 power train is one of the most prolific platforms of all time, being utilized in the older Tundra, FJ Cruiser, Tacoma 05-15, and 4Runner 05-Current. In all those years as an auto mechanic, I have seen precisely ONE of these engines out of the chassis. It had over 200k miles on it when the water pump failed and the owner overheated it so badly that the engine seized. We repaired the cooling system, put new plugs in it, and the owner drove it for another 20k before the head gaskets failed. I bought the truck for 1000$ off of the guy, and when I pulled the engine apart, there were no cracks in the heads or cylinders, no warpage of the block, no leak down on the bench. Got new gaskets and repolished the valves/seats, and I’ve been driving it for 4 years. Truck is about to turn 20 years old and it drives better than my GF’s 6 year old Kia with 100k on it. Anyone that doesn’t “get” the 4Runner popularity just simply doesn’t know. If I were to replace mine with anything, it would just be a new one.

      In all the years I've had a 4Runner.. I can't name a single "oh shit" moment I had mechanically. They're absolutely rock-solid. Even the old ones (if you skip the V6 from the 2nd gen, I've got one of those too..).

      @@MasonH24 I have seen a lot of major repairs on them. Full rear end rebuilds, trans/torque converter failure, computer/ignition system failure, but the common thread is that those vehicles had 200-300k+ miles on them, and most of the time are abuse related. Granted, I live in a dry climate, so our cars don’t rust out like they do in the Midwest and the South, but my money is still on these trucks being the most reliable vehicles of the modern era.

      70 grand for this is crazy. Don't get me wrong, I really like the 4Runner but Toyota is just milking people now with their "reliability". It is the same thing with Blackberry who kept trying to sell their "security". Auto manufacturers in general have gotten better in terms of reliability over time since everyone has copied the "Toyota Manufacturing Process" and most parts are made by a few other companies. Only thing the automakers are doing now is final assembly. Take that 70k and buy a Jeep and add an extended warranty.

      Body on frame trucks are not good though. They rust and rot. Body movement is bad. Accident ratings are poor. They fold up in accidents. They ride rough and are bouncy. They also have a lot more sway and brake dive.
      People love them for 4 wheeling cause they flex. You can add a body lift if needed. Most importantly, they are overhyped.
      A unibody structure is best for daily driving. Way more rigid and won’t rot and rust. Accident safely is hugely improved. Handling is sharper as there’s no more body flex. It’s all one piece. They also hold up in accidents very well.
      If you do not use them for daily 4 wheeling, they are not worth it. If only used for a daily driver, they are extremely overpriced. Fuel economy makes it even a worse buy.

    I went hiking last weekend and had to park my Subaru about a mile from the trailhead because the road got too rocky. From that point on, half of the cars that I saw were 4Runners, all with some sort of customization, and every single one of them looked good. People don't buy 4Runners for touchscreens and safety features - they buy them because they enjoy having their own unique adventure vehicle.

    • @ViolentMLG
      @ViolentMLG 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Its a fair point, but there is no way the vast majority of 4Runner buyers buy them because of this.
      Most NEW 4Runner owners are moms, just like the F150 is the most sold vehicle in the US, its not tough rugged men buying them.
      They were just told its reliable, the tech is primitive so they don't actually have to 'catch up' with it, they're old enough with enough driving EXP that they can actually manage a larger vehicle, its gigantic so it can haul children and whatever else they want on the occasion, and it makes them feel safer due to its size and visibility than your average Corolla or Camry.
      Its not a coincidence that its basically the first large SUV Toyota sales besides the Highlander.

    I think Doug hit the nail right on the head. Part of why I love my 2016 (first vehicle I ever bought brand new) was because it’s a familiar feel to what I was used to. Some of these newer vehicles are great and have cool gizmos, but I like not having to look at the temperature dial to change it, or the fan speed dial and such. I like just knowing where the buttons and knobs are without having to use a touch screen to change settings. Much like touch screen phones, you have to be pretty deliberate in your input with most modern vehicles, and bumpy roads can be infuriating with that. When you’ve got large buttons and knobs, bring on the bumps. You can still keep your eyes on the road and find what you need

    • @troyhodulik5542
      @troyhodulik5542 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Exactly. Buts it not about familiarity. It’s about function and simplicity. My nephew has a nice newer Silverado. The radio went out on it: the touchscreen type with all of the controls. Went to go to work and the truck wouldn’t start. Are you kidding me??? A broken radio rendered his truck inoperable. 2 weeks and $1200 later his truck would start again. But consumers gotta have a 42” wide screen in the vehicle to control everything. Just like a dial or push button for 4 wheel drive. What a joke. Go lock the hubs and pull the transfer case lever. If something does go bad it can be fixed relatively inexpensively. This new tech stuff is a joke.

    As much as I love technology and do to and extent desire them in my car, one of the reasons I love the 4runner and the lexus GX is simple feature don't break as much as complex features. The cars just work, and when they break you're not paying 1000s to replace something stupid. I compare it to say the BMW x5. Great engines and features, but the drive and electronics break all the darn time

  • @danmanr

    I loved this one!
    I would never pay 70K for that BUT I love the truck. I loved the part where you explain why people still by it. I agree, it has what you need, nothing you don't and every components has been tested for 13yrs in the field and everything works.
    As a product designer on contract out to various automotive companies over my 20 years I thought Toyota's methods were interesting. If they have a part they like on a vehicle going out of production or being revamped and it has been proven to be quality they copy it as much as possible as they design the new version so all details carry through as much as the style allows. It is a little painful to deal with, almost feels closed minded, but in the end parts on the new vehicle don't fail.

    I think making only subtle changes to the body of the 4runner has appeal to used buyers and helped inflate this market. You can find a cherry 2011 and it looks like a 2017 from the curb. Also at 2-300k miles, the 4runners missing features ie: non-powergate rear and manual shifting linkage etc.. become features instead of failure points.

  • @beepboopbeepboop190

    Love my 4th gen. I love its lack of "features". I like knobs and physical controls and not having to control things through a screen. I like that there aren't a bunch of "features" that are just going to fail in a few years. Very low-tech and it just works. Eventually mine will die, likely decades from now, and when that happens I hope the 4Runners at that time are still "ancient" compared to competitors. Except that roof "basket" -- Toyota's roof racks are the one point I can't get behind and I replaced mine right after I got it. I can't imagine owning anything else other than a 4Runner at this point, this thing is just great for me personally.

    • @ashleyhamman
      @ashleyhamman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The knobs are a great point that I can't comprehend why people would go for anything newer. The 4th gen, once you've had a little bit of time in it, is a vehicle where you can feel the controls and know exactly what your pressing without looking down to check, as long as you aren't fooling around with the infotainment. It's not a major point, but I do think it comes at the benefit of driver awareness.

    • @beepboopbeepboop190

      @@ashleyhamman The lights behind all of my hvac controls has been burned out for probably a couple years at this point. I know I can replace it with one or maybe two screws behind the pop-out storage -- but because they're physical knobs and I know exactly where they are and what they do, I haven't had a need to replace the lights. I don't even look at them so whether they're illuminated or not doesn't matter. When I drive someone else's car with an infotainment system I find myself annoyed more than anything. My buddy's tesla -- wow, the "eyes off the road" attention that goes into the simplest things is mind boggling. I'm totally good with physical knobs and as little tech as possible. It's one of the only parts of my life that isn't heavy on tech and I appreciate that.

    250,000 miles on our 4Runner. It has no leaks and needs nothing. It has never broken down and is capable on and offroad. There aren't really a lot of vehicles, maybe none, that are like the 4Runner in how affordable its ownership is in combination with its legendary reliability. People know that and that is why it is in demand. It can do anything and the chances of it leaving you stranded are slim to none.

    I enjoy your reviews, I enjoy your humor. We bought my wife this vehicle - TRD Pro in the Lime Rush. We purchased it new on Feb 28, 2022. You are right, most dealers wanted 10-15K over sticker! We ended up buying hers at Capital Toyota for sticker. Honestly, once she had decided on this vehicle and I would have paid the markup if needed.
    We are now empty nesters and this is the first vehicle - in the past 25 years - that will be a vehicle that is HERS ,and and not the kid mobile. We own a horse farm and while we have other vehicles, this is one she can comfortably drive on the road, around our property, off road...anyplace she wants. We have had many vehicles with far more creature comforts over the years; in fact, most of them did. My wife could have basically had any vehicle she wanted (under 125K) and she LOVES this vehicle. It just simply goes where she points it, and the 4WD capability is terrific for a bone stock vehicle.
    You did not really score on reliability. However with the exception of Range Rover, most of the vehicles she considered are reliable for the first 50K miles. I daily drive a Tacoma (4X4 TRD OR). I bought it new in Jan of 2019. I now have 210K trouble free (other than routine/recommended) miles on this truck - many of those miles in 4WD. My son has a 2002 Tacoma (4X4 TRD OR) - my best friend purchased it new and sold it to my son about 3 years ago. He now has around 300K trouble free (other than routine/recommended maintenance) miles on this Tacoma. While reliability of the 4 Runner is probably not a huge issue - as many folks will never keep a vehicle long enough to need a vehicle that will go 'forever' - I think the peace of mind plays a major factor in the desirability.
    We currently also have 3 GMC Trucks/SUVs too, along with the mentioned Toyotas. While GMC certainly has FAR more creature comforts than do the Toyota ones do, the Toyota SUV/trucks just hold up better for our lifestyle. The 4 Runner can't compete on paper - that is for sure....but on the road and off the road...it is a WINNER.

I've built it out for offroading and camping and it's served me well on a couple of overlanding trips with some pretty gnarly offroading, as well as hauling all sorts of gear and toys for weekend adventures:). I laughed through a lot of the interior features (or lack thereof) because it just doesn't matter. If anything, you're right about simple being a good thing.
