I had just bought my first camera when I made this video. Like I had been a video maker for under a year. I think I was doing alright at the time. I don't argue with people in the comments over anything so you can stop telling me how wrong I am.
Best lens for APS-C cameras in my opinion. 30mm (45mm) is a fabulously versatile focal range. The lens is stupid sharp, focus is quick, build quality is decent. And, of course, it's pretty damn cheap (especially if you buy used). I've had mine since 2018 and I absolutely love it.
Its offensive to call this lens a beginners lens. This lens gave life to mu old sony cameras (nex5 and a5100)

Currently my favorite lens for apsc is the tamron 11-20 2.8. Loving the ultra wide for my camping videos.

Another option is square slide filters. A bit bulkier but you also have more options like gradient ND filters.

I had the 30mm 1.4 on canon m50 years ago and when I switched to sony full frame I got an apac camera jut to use the 30mm on sony. I love this lens
This is a great lens to begin with and also a great lens in general. I have the whole Sigma kit lens pack and honestly out of all of them the 16 mm 30 mm and 56 mm. I use the 30 mm the most. It’s sharp and if I need a little bit more close up shots I can always zoom in post edit without a significant amount of quality loss.
I have a Sony a6400, sigma 16, and Tamron 70-180. Looking to purchase a 3rd lens. I was thinking about a 30 or 35 just to get a different perspective compared to the 16 and 70-180. Do you think this would be a good idea or would you suggest a different focal length?
When I started out with dslrs I bought all my filters in 58mm (to fit my kit lenses). Then when micro 4/3 came out it was a breeze to adapt them to the smaller filter sizes 😎

I eat off of this lens. Besides my kit lens it’s the only I currently have. All rounded for photos and video. That 1.4 is overpowered but when you get the right shot it feels so good. Great review!
i skipped the kit lens for sigma zoom lens and it has been a great everyday carry. I am looking to get this prime for video and low light and also push myself to not use zoom for photos. I will also geta viltrox 75mm f1.2 for portraits and then it will be a complete set for me.

My panasonic s5 is full frame, but does a aps-c crop when shooting 4k60. So if i buy a 30mm apsc lens, it should remain 30mm and not 48mm right?
i use it for a Canon EOS M50 mark II ... one of the best (buy) native prime lens for eso-m mount

30/50 mm is literally the perfect focal length I need to get one for my full frame setup once I upgrade bodies because I miss having that focal length you can use it for pretty much everything
Hey, I guess you are a sony user and i could really use your help.
Just Bought A Sony APSC (ZV-E10) and i'm having a hard time choosing between the 18-105 to the sigma 30mm.
I really like the option of shooting in low light and getting shallow depth of field in Sigma 30mm but the adjustable focal length of the Sony 18-105 looks amazing and very useful, especially for my uses (mainly street photography, portraits and landscape). Ultimately what keeps me from buying the Sony 18-105 is the relatively closed aperture that will give less depth of field and perform significantly less well in low light and the size and weight that looks huge and heavy relative to an apsc camera.

@@cleanaccount7147 Hi, I actually bought the Sigma 30mn, I know its a lot of text but i think i coverd everything for photography and videography. For video the sigma 30mm is absolutely amazing, the bokeh and the image quality is stunning, but it has 2 problems compared to the 18-105 (in video). First, it doesn't have oss (optical steady shot) which means that if you are shooting handheld with no support your gonna get really shaky footage. I looked all around the internet to find a solution for that and here are some of the things i found:
Gimbal, for me it was too expensive and it doesn't give a handheld look, more of a robotic look. If you do want to buy one id buy the Zhiyun Crane M3.
Stabilizer, I read that it was really tough to handle.
Shoulder rig, looks nice, didn't have the Money to buy.
Catalyst Browse, it dose remove some of the shake, but you have to be in shutter 1/200 wich is not ideal for films and stuff.
Software stabilization (Premier Pro, Resolve...) Works kinda good, NOT FOR PROFESSIONAL WORK. You have to play with the settings so it dosent look too weird.
Top handle, my next purchase, lets gravity do the stabilization for you.
In camera image stabilization, works fantastic, i use it all the time, it looks kinda weird sometimes and it crops in a lot, but it doesn't effect the quality and the crop isnt too bad if you're shooting somebody else.
A Tripod, my choice. It doesn't mean that all of your Shots should be without movement. I literally folded the tripod and kept the camera on it. It gives weight to it so it removes some of the shake, I shot a whole short film handheld with the tripod folded and the camera image stabilization on and it ended up looking great!
The other problem is versatility, i made a short film in a tight space so i had some difficulties with the focal length, other than needing a wider lens sometimes, it didn't effect me in video.
When it comes to photography it really depends on what you are shooting. Im a street photographer so other than needing to zoom sometimes it was absolutely perfect. If you're traveling and maybe shoot landscape it isn't the best but it could work. For portraits its great too so don't worry about that.
So to rap it up, if you have the money id buy the sigma 18-50mm. it has the same stabilization problem but it solves the versatility problem. If you need something for street photography, short films, stock footage, talking head videos and stuff like that, you wont be disappointed from the sigma 30mm.If you need the versatility and you don't have the money to the sigma 18-50mm, buy the 18-105. Just know that you are giving up image quality, and you won't have a low aperture so low light would be hard, and the cinematic bokeh wont appear unless you are at a high focal length.

Hi, I really want to buy the Sigma 30mm f / 1.4 but the only thing that prevents me is the lack of zoom. I just bought a camera, without a kit lens and saw a lot of people who said that starting a prime lens would limit me.
My question to you is did you feel that the lack of zoom limited you that you started in photography and videoagraphy?

When I first bought my camera I never used the kit lens only a prime lens. It’s never a limitation if you’re creative enough. If you’re vlogging it’ll be tough with a 30mm. I barely can get away with it on the 22mmF2

idk if its cause its a cheap lens or what but most of the test shots are super out of focus.
I wanted to give you the benefit of the doubt because this is a really old video when I didn't know what I was doing so I figured "hey maybe I missed focus a few times." The thing is, I didn't see one out of focus shot let alone one "really out of focus" shot. What're you talking about exactly? The backgrounds? They're supposed to be out of focus. The subjects? They're all perfect. So where? Which one?
@@SamuelJamesVideos I am trying to prove myself wrong, cause originally i saw it over Parsec while remotely logging into my computer from work but I am watching your video from my computer at work and it seems like the shots are still out of focus even on 4k: 6:17, 6:24, 6:26, 6:30, 5:55 subject isn't in focus. I can screenshot and send it youy way. The shots of you speaking are crisp and clear but the examples shots aren't.
