The 2 year or so lockdown, and my "No Nonsense Jazz Guitar" DVD's by Jimmy Bruno kept me busy. Gave myself many a lesson, and those DVD's turned me into a no nonsense studious student. Highly recommended. Thanks Jimmy for posting this particular lesson which gave me yet more insights on this subject.

I think my biggest issue with learning any tune is knowing where I am in the tune. It's drummed into our little student heads over and over again. Know where you are and know where you're going. That's not easy. I've been trying to name the chords as they go by.. That helps but it doesn't yet come effortlessly. Many times, if I were to stop a tune in the middle, I wouldn't be able to name the chord we stooped on. So for me right now that's the focus, Know where you are, know where you're going.

Its so true what you were saying about focus. Just working on Blue Bossa, and now getting into all these things about what Tyner was doing with it and all the substitutions.... anyway ... was doing kind of my own fingerings with yours since not sure exactly what you used though there are quite a few times you showed not sure it matters too much... Ended up with a two note starting on the fifth on E string and the 3rd had it on the G the 6th had it on the D and the 2nd had it on the A seventh was on the B.... Used to do them from every finger all sorts of ways

Been checking out the lessons and I never knew for sure what the fingerings were. I found them on a search and the only thing I had wrong was from the fifth one I added that 7th to the top. I have been playing with them and like them. Now using them with the flatted 3rd and trying tacking on the flat six too (not all at once). Them barry harris 3rds are a trip with that one third from fifth has to be a 2nd sounds a little weird but fun.
Stumbled on trick, descending and you run out of notes, you want to get down to the lowest note, but you cant then jump up and finish where you wanted.
Ah well, guitars... went to see a couple of people Pat martino and Robben ford and the funny thing is I paid more attention to the drummers probably from having a drumset at the time and a place to play it. But still not as crazy as I was at one time listening to guitars. Still listen to them but less. I like Don patterson with martino and grant green with Stitt quite a bit good blues

@@brunoonlineschool7527 Oh just the 5th position fingering ended and descended from the sixth, if C the A.
Barry thing is just adding a #5 then the 3rds or chords will be alternating one and five chords with 6th and diminished chords. can do with minor, 7th or 7thb5 chords too.

Unnecessary too complicated.. I don't know why you are flatting 6ths..
the fingering is fingering 6 because it starts on the 6th degree of the tonal center...you are talking about positions.. it goes from low a to high C on the 1st string

Only guitar I play though got like 11 guitars taking up space. I must think one day will play with other people.

People! Stop calling them modes! What if it was a seven string guitar? Wouldn't these fingerings start on a different note thus, changing the "mode"? It's just where the notes are in different places on the neck! Fuck!

  • @TheRealSandleford

The sign of a good teacher is when the student doesnt come back. Just the small thing of naming the notes in your chords, you could work on it even a little and get a lot out of it. For example, play a C triad, have the E go up to F with that play a D minor then play a G major seven thats the F#, then the Gs 2 chord and you know you have a C again and theres a bit of a progression with a couple keys in it. Thats just working on it a little.. Theres guys selling lessons on here but its like you say do the work and you get the pay off

Oh had a bit of a breakthrough I think playing a six minor and mixing in some five with that scale just a touch of the b7 dominant scale and just a touch of the 3 chord dominant scale sounded good! After trying minor through the cycle a bit.
Now as far as this tune, havent messed with it but interesting, flattening the third, you still get the minor six instead of the 4 chord if you used the 6 chord scale... I was just wondering why Miles had Kelly do Freddie freeloader and found bill evans solo for it and it really did not sound as bluesy

@@brunoonlineschool7527 I guess I mean when the C became minor did you just flat the third of the scale and did it change to key C minor?
I was thinking the sixth chord in Eb key center does not have a minor 6, if you lower the 7th a degree you end up with a 4maj7 chord.... unless you can use that major scale with a b3 on a 1 minor chord? Then you get a minor 6 chord
