Jimmy Bruno's Everything You Wanted to Know About Jazz Guitar...
Jimmy, there are websites that allow you to have your videos behind a paywall, you just record and upload. like website builders, it's not hard its point/click drag and drop, and you don't need to hire an 'it guy' for it man...just a though. i think you could even do it somehow on youtube.
not to be a thorn in your bush, but i went back over your major fingerings video. its the exact same as CAGED. BUT, caged does not refer to the positions by the start of the scale degrees like you do, but by 'shapes' within the fingerings. tbh, your way does make more sense as it forces you to remember the scale degrees a bit more just by virtue of the name of the positions. the equivalencies is as follows in case anyone is curious: fingering 3 ---> position 1 (C) in caged fingering 5 ----> position 2 (A) in caged fingering 6 -----> position 3 (G) in caged fingering 7 ----> position 4 (E) in caged fingering 2 -----> position 5 (D) in caged i did some digging as to where 'caged' came from, supposedly this guy 'claims' it www.castaliapub.com/origins-of-the-c-a-g-e-d-system/ would love to know JB when you 'came up' with your fingerings thing? was it common knowledge back in the day or something you picked up from other guitar players, or its just common sense when you were told to 'learn the major scale' in all positions? thanks!
im memorizing all the notes on the fretboard, almost there, and im memorizing key signatures!! thanks to you!!! thank you!
you will never get music like buddy miles again unless musicians record on tape AND without a DAW.. recording on tape gave a different vibe, not to mention, there was no click to record to (or if there was, tape would still misalign things ever so slightly to give a 'feel'.
With all due respect, Sir. In your “lesson one” you demonstrate the five fingerings starting with the key of C. You call the first pattern fingering 5 because it starts on the 5th of the key. So what are you playing, random pitches? No, you’re playing the C major scale starting on G or the mixolydian mode. A scale does not always have to start and end on its root. At least not when you create melodies from them. But, that’s only part of the confusion. You go on to demonstrate fingering 6 because it starts on the 6th of the scale, then fingering 7, 2 and 3. Five fingerings: 5, 6, 7, 2 & 3. In the key of F you use fingerings: 2, 3, 5, 6 & 7. Still five fingerings, just in a different order because each starts on a different scale degree. And here we have the word scale again. More confusion for some people, just because you insist on calling your fingering patterns “Pitch Collections”. The fingerboard itself is the collection of pitches. Why not let students use whatever perspective they are comfortable or familiar with? It’s all valid, including relating the five fingerings to the so-called CAGED system. And I’m not trying to ruffle a few feathers here, just suggesting other viewpoints.
Hey Jimmy, what strings do you use?
Nice to see you reposting these Jimmy. There is a nice version of you playing this with Frank Vignola.
Jimmy i was wondering did you ever play with or meet Lenny Breau? and i agree about satin doll it was the first jazz tune i ever learned and it's a classic for a reason
I doubt I will ever be able to play even a handful of those chords but I just love listening and watching this “cat”. Plus….him being from Philly is a huge bonus!
It think I watched this video 100 hundred times and every time I learn something new, Jimmy is the best.
Or you could get rid of the squeak by using some Finger Ease lubricant in the spray can.
Looks like Jimmy knows "Them Changes" too! Thanks for your great dedication and work to this thing they call "Jazz."
Hi Jimmy! Now the comments are on! 😁
If you study his method, you can learn the lick by ear, no tab needed.
So why did he go from c to b flat to e flat to a flat. I don't know the pattern and reasoning
I want to play guitar and smoke with this guy.
@brunoonlineschool7527 Hey, Jimmy, who was that seventeen year old bass player you jammed with a couple of years ago?
Hahahahah
Been working on the the 5 fingerings all keys excercise and it really helped. I had a bad habit of leaning too much on arpeggio shapes to find my major scales and this strips that down to the fingerings that are actually efficient
Thanks for telling it like it is. Cheers!
"playing the note that's moving"... to learn so much from just one sentence... thanks!

Novice monk here, can you share your opinion on fingerstyle playing vs using a pick. The tone of fingerstyle has drawn me to play that way but clearly a pick provides more speed...Thanks. Enjoy your channel.
Hey did you ever get to play with Jimmy Raney, was another good one.
howd u get into guitar jimmy
Jimmy you forgot more about jazz then i have learned probably. I enjoy your vids.
did you play at your daughter's wedding?
Jimmy, I got to meet you a long time ago when you came to Buffalo New York for a concert and master class. The master class was awesome. I would also like to say that your album with Joey de Francesco is one of my absolute favorites. Truly amazing playing from both of you. Inspired. And inspiring. If you find the time, or have the inclination, could you put together a video of two five licks.? I find I learn best with digestible chunks. Thank you, keep it up.
The hero we need!
Never saw you before today, feel like I have a new friend , thanks
thanks man!!
Sheesh Jimmy you’ve never sounded better❤
Hey Jimmy I thought you were putting flats on that fuck'n thing man? Those scratchy fuck'n round wounds sound shit c'mon. Love your work though man. Australia
That which crawls out from between the legs of a woman 👠 should learn to speak 🗣️ non obscene words thank you.💃💃💃💃👯🫵
Are you from the pork roll or taylor ham part of NJ?
The most “real” man teaching on the internet. I can understand you. You speak my language.
Frank gambale uses the 3nps scales pretty good
Enjoyed that, I can get it thankfully 📈🎶🎸
Have no nonsense and inside outside dvds they helped me alot when starting out, thanks for everything you are a living legend and my favorite youtube guitar lessons. Love your jams with Frank and Pasquale! Thanks for everything!
Legend!
The man!
the one I'm watching that you just posted an hour ago doesn't have the comments on so I just went to look for one that has the comments on so I could come over here and say thank you
I absolutely LOVE this. An amazing player and an amazing sense of humor. Keep it up Jimmy!
Can I just detune my guitar to Eb and play like I'm in E?
I've mostly paid attention to the sharp keys, and I go around clockwise like you've just done. You're also thinking about the flat keys, and you go counter clockwise on them. The flats come on in fourths and the sharps come on in fifths because of the different directions. I'm just writing down what I think I just saw you doing, but I'm not sure why you think of them this way. Anywho, thanks for your videos!
This should set anybody who is learning ahead about 10 years. I get a lot from your videos even as a steel guitar. My daughter plays the armpit guitar so I send these to her all the time. Really dig your videos and it's sorta comforting to hear somebody speaks with the same vocabulary I do after having lived in Nashville for 30 years. I'm from Upstate NY. If you want I'd like to hear about your experience in studio recording and more odd facts that you have learned that only come from time. If I'm ever in Philly, I'm going to look you up and call you out of the blue so you can hang up on me. 😄 Take it easy. Rich Arnold
