I spent most of my first 50 years making up "home-grown" patterns for all the white keys on the guitar, but I never paid attention to the black keys, even though they're just the usual 2 finger rock shapes. And I've wasted zillions of hours widdling around with those. White keys, black keys and the twain only ever met on my guitar by accident.
When I saw some of Barry Harris videos, it really explained a lot of things to me that I couldn't figure out on my own. And his observation about not asking jazz players how to play jazz was spot on. It is so fortunate that technology has given us a way to access this kind of wisdom.
And we are also so fortunate to preserve some of Jimmy's insights, foul or not. I'm just a hack hobbyist who plays for fun, so I don't mind if I play an Am7 instead of the "right" chord. But I can hear the difference and having someone simply point that out is of great value to guys like me. Obviously it shouldn't take a player of Jimmy's caliber to have to point that out to jazz beginners, but it is much appreciated. I've recently ordered his DVDs just to hear more of his "approach" to teaching.
So, to Jimmy, may you land many more gigs in venues that give you a chance to have fun and share the joy with other players and stretch out.

I used to read the news in the morning, bad idea. Now I see what Jimmy Bruno has to say while I'm drinking coffee. The "Sweet Lorraine" set made my day! Thanks for that. And Barry Harris... Another "no nonsense" approach to jazz , be-bop style. One of his students has a channel called " Things I learned... " with examples played on guitar.

Barry Harris' insights have really helped me as a player, great musician. Hey Jimmy, you asked "what do you want me to play?" how about "You make me feel so young" ? I've been learning that one lately, be good to see your take on it. Also, i wanted to ask if you know a Dexter Gordon track called "Ca Purange" from the album of the same name? Don't know if it'll be to your taste but check it out if you don't know it. I think the energy is amazing and Hank Jones' piano solo is up there with the greatest in my opinion. Keep up the vids man, make me smile every time i watch one. Adios.

You miss that it doesn't need to be technical or complicated to be good, no MORE than a 390 french cooked 3 hour to Make meal is better than a 15 minute hamburger.... and in fact anything requires the simple aspect to be good.. Thus, a bunch of sustain or a simple but New melody that sings that speaks that moves your body is art AND is better than modal formulated embellished jazz, You talk about not liking things like boxes or alt tuning because it's repetitive but so is jazz modes even as it sounds great, it's STILL Modal..... ALSO, WE LOOK FOR NEW IN MUSIC, new totally or new versions better than old.. Now just playing well is fine BUT it's not a following you Will have, you will have a show, a show that no one needs to see that many time's... also, music aline is only a part of a musical experience Thus Very few music ONLy acts have ever been major..it was mostly music AND song or music AND dance.... head jazz was the death of jazz in a certain path of it... jazz or and or technical playing is best a ingredient to what is good popular music.. There's a ton of BAD lead guitar playing in groups that have produced decent tunes, this is where you should HAVE gone and not oo pooed Their expression...the expression that sells albulms and shows
