A track like Reflection is so complex, so thought out, has so much depth and just so incredible that it alone is greater than the majority of full albums produced by anyone else.
I have always thought about Lateralus as "Maynard's Guide to Enlightenment", so I loved this conversation :) Some thoughts on Reflection: Ego basically consists of a mind-made story we tell ourselves over and over and over again about who we are. And when we mistake this story for our true identity, it blocks our sense of connection to the whole. We view ourselves as separate from each other and alone in the world around us... we are "satellites drifting". A lot of spiritual traditions believe this is where our fundamental mental health issues stem from. Maynard's Recipe for Enlightenment: The Grudge - Forgive and let go of grudges before they weigh you down The Patient - Learn to find patience Schism - Communication is the most important aspect of any human relationship Parabol/Parabola - The present moment is all you ever have, so embrace it fully Lateralus - Quiet your mind and trust your intuition to see the divine nature of this human experience Ticks & Leeches - This was never intended to be the album at all, but the record label pushed the band to make a more "radio-friendly single". This song is what the band wrote in response to the record executives. Disposition/Reflection/Triad - Let go of our mind-made stories to feel our fundamental connection to the Source and to each other
Disposition is about the relationship between the internal and external and how focusing on the external makes you prone to be as volatile as the weather. Reflection is about modern day Narcissism and it's creation from the ego of society.
Disposition and reflection are the most indulgent couplet of songs I’ve ever experienced. The curiosity and sense of calmness captured in disposition sets up the vulnerability and questioning of ones self that reflection demands of the listener. Besides Rosetta stoned this is the best musicianship tool has imo.
Regarding your discussion around 38:50 about the lyrics of light, and resuscitating the hopeless, I love the structure of that verse. "And in my darkest moment, fetal and weeping / The moon tells me a secret / My confidant" as if he's alone in the night, he has bonded with the moon. What follows after is implied to be the secret, spoken by the Moon. She whispers to him in his darkness, "As full and bright as I am / This light is not my own and / A million light reflections pass over me" she's confiding in him that her light in the night isn't her own, it's from the sun - the Moon explains it to him further, "Its source is bright and endless / She resuscitates the hopeless / Without her, we are lifeless satellites drifting". The moon has shown him that in his darkness, it is Sol that lifts us all, gives us warmth, and life. Without her, we are lifeless satellites, drifting... Similarly, you can reinterpret this not as a conversation between he and the Moon, but maybe more as him contemplating these relationships and anthropomorphizing the moon and his relationship to the night/dark. In this contemplation, he finally realizes there is hope to conquer the darkness in his heart - "And as I pull my head out I am without one doubt / Don't want to be down here soothing my narcissism / I must crucify the ego before it's far too late / I pray the light lifts me out / Before I pine away". Perhaps this revelation about his relationship to the darkness (moon) and the moon's relationship to light and healing (sun), he is pulling himself out of the depression and loneliness. The lyrics then transform into a unifying message of "we". As you mentioned, the song begins with "I" and concludes in a plural, both as if he's speaking to and encouraging another - "So crucify the ego, before it's far too late / To leave behind this place so negative and blind and cynical / And you will come to find that we are all one mind / Capable of all that's imagined and all conceivable". Our narrator's journey of healing has begun, and he will try to help others heal.
Yes Reflection makes me groove like my spirit is connecting to a past time dancing and moving with my original tribe... my head bobs my shoulders dip my hips start to sway. It completely takes over my entire body.
Man, everytime I listen to reflection I can feel that third verse waking my soul. Then Adam takes over & my soul reveals itself through my eye ducts & the goosebumps all over my body. Love that song.
I thought I was the only one. No disrespect to Triad, but I'm usually emotionally spent by the end of this song and it seems a perfect way to close the perfect album.
Triad is the expulsion of all hate that has been reflected on during Reflection. It's you forcing out viscera of the mind and emotion now that you have reflected on your past. For me, it's not complete until you scream at yourself.
One of the few channels that read the lyrics, does some research and gives a fun analysis/reaction to Tool’s discography . They’re one of my fave bands aside from Radiohead and deftones. But every reaction video you guys do is fantastic! And it’s dope to see you react to the awesome trilogy/ conclusion to lateralus. A hell of a classic album.
Reflection is the most eloquent and complicated way of saying , the sun will come out tomorrow. A really old American phrase meaning don’t give up if things are bleak today we get a chance to fix it tomorrow the sun is coming back to us, a new day HOPE! It also displays Maynard as a masterclass poet
It's a reference, but it's not specifically accurate. Fun fact: It's *rOuGhLy* 10,000 days between the first Tool release to the most recent album. Wew!
Reflection, in my opinion, is one of TOOL's top 3 songs ever created... I have listened to them for a very long time, and Reflection still hits me different every single time I hear it... ♥
I used to wake up every Saturday morning excited to see the next video from you guys, but now I have a job where I always work Saturday. SO NOW, the best part of my Saturday is coming home from a 12 hour shift and going on a Tool journey to with you to relax until bedtime! Can't wait to get into 10,000 days and finally Fear Inoculum. Make sure your seatbelts are in working order! Spiral out, keep going!
So excited that you got to the holy trinity! So many things can be said about these songs! The way I've come to conceptualize these songs is floating through the atmosphere in Disposition, then traveling through space with Reflection, and finally entering and passing through a blackhole with Triad. They are so primal and bring you on such a journey.
(further comment) Regarding your discussion at around 53:40 about using the lyricless Triad to reflect on things where you say "Even if, you know, that's not the aim of the song, that's how you can treat it, and that's how you can use it yourself." -- I love this, because it regards an older interview with the band, where, when asked about the name "Tool", Maynard suggested that a listener can use their music as a tool to find meaning or a connection in their journey of life. Some songs *obviously* are meant to be a deeper experience than others, but I take his/their meaning to be that you can interpret and connect to their songs in any way you like, that they can be a "tool" for you as you feel whatever way.
I kind of enjoy when dude asks lady if she has the lyrics ready. The whole back and forth between the two on this always makes me smile. Keep rockin, I agree about watching the band's music videos. Adam Jones is responsible for most of what you'll see. As a visual artist and guitarist I can say --- Adam is a hero to my kind and any Tool fan MUST check out the context he adds to their amazing music
The truth is, when I ask this question I setup the song to play at that moment. I do it in DAW, need to slide the item onto the right time, unmute the song track and ensure the volume levels of monitoring relative to the music so we can hear ourselves in the headphones when song will play :) I keep improving the workflow, I'm learning it on the go :)
Initum the first track Disposition for me is to calm the Mind to prepare you for the second track to Reflect (Reflection). The third track Triad motivates me to act upon my Reflections. ✌
This is the best reaction video I've seen yet. I really enjoyed the in-depth breakdown, and the time you took to analyze everything so thoroughly. The disposition of your reflection was also nice and pleasant. Triad defined as a group of three could also simply refer to Adam, Danny, and Justin. Great job, looking forward to watching more.
Reflection sounds to me what I imagine an actual ancient song or melody sounded like. Like the music going on in some crazy ritual in an opium den in Egypt or something. It conjures a very strong sense of place and time for most people I've discussed that song with.
For me, Disposition represents a change that occurs in your life. Then Reflection follows it, being an actual reflection on yourself and of that change, and how it has affected you for the better or worse. Triad is the final realization, the acceptance or denial of the original change. That’s just my basic view on it
Loved this reaction. 💯💯💯👍👍👍, I actually, fell "asleep", to speak, but, lucidly, felt, and had conversations with you, woke up, and had continuing conversations, then drifted away again. Listening to you cause you both get it. ♥️☺️
I would to see ya’ll react to some Porcupine Tree. “Anesthetize” and “Arriving Somewhere But Not Here” are the most popular (for a reason) but so many great songs by that band. “Blackest Eyes” “Trains” “Open Car” “Deadwing” to name a few. I think they’re a bit of a mix of Pink Floyd and Tool. I get you are just doing Tool stuff now, but if you keep growing and feel like doing more, Porcupine Tree could be a good way to go. Huge fan base, very few reaction videos. Stay safe folks! Happy holidays.
The way I view the song is as a conversation between this depressed speaker, the "I" of the song and the Moon. It starts at the beginning: "I have come curiously close to the end, down / beneath my self indulgent pitiful hole. Defeat I / Concede and move closer / I may find comfort here / I may find peace within the emptiness. How pitiful" So, out speaker is down and depressed, hiding in a hole, a pit of self-indulgent pity. The pity and derpression calls to the speaker, luring the speaker deeper and deeper. And then the light of the Moon hits the speaker: "And in my darkest moment, fetal and weeping / The Moon tells me a secret, my confidant." From here, it is the Moon speaking: "As full and bright as I am / This light is not my own and / A million light reflections pass over me." The moon is telling the speaker (our the speaker is telling his or her self) that as beautiful as it is it, it beauty is the result of the Sun, and it's light reflects off the Moon, but most of the Sun's light and beauty pass off into space. The Moon continues by describing the Sun: "The source is bright and endless / She resuscitates the hopeless / Without her we are lifeless satellites drifting." The "she" is the Sun, bright, endless. It's the light of the Sun that produces clarity and definition and the center for the planets. It literally resuscitates the hopeless; it produces life without which life could only dream of being, and even the depressing beauty found in the Moon and the night is a reflection of this beauty of the Sun. Afterwards the speaker gains new hope: "And as I pull my head out, / I am without one doubt / I don't want to live down here / Soothing my narcissism I / must crucify the ego / before it's far too late / and pray the light lifts me out." The speaker now sees the course forward; instead of laying "fetal and weeping" in this pit of "self-indulgent narcissism" and depression, crying poor me, poor me, the speaker has decided to take action. Abandon the desires the speaker hold that causes him pain by remaining unfulfilled and the light of the Sun--definition, hope, purpose, center--will lift him out. In the end, he show that if he can do it, then so can all of us. Abandon the self-indulgent desires that cause you pain because they are not fulfilled, and give yourself definition, purpose, hope, and a center of gravity. Are you the Moon, reflecting other's light, or are you going to be the Sun, making your own?
To me reflection is just saying we are a reflection of one another. We all need to check our ego at the door if we are to co exist peacefully together. When we cater to self indulgence and narcissism we bring eachother down.
Check out Adam Jones's new video "The Witness " for his 1979 Gibson Les Paul Custom Guitar. It has amazing visuals and "new" music from Adam, Justin, and Danny!
Reflection is such a beauty..... enlightenment. I love triad as well... no lyrics but...many sacred triads come to mind I always think of kether chokhmah and binah
When he is referring to "she" he is talking about our Sun because the light we see from the Moon is a reflection of the Sun's light. I believe he is trying to say in a metaphor is when we realize that not everything needs to be about ourselves and that we need others to feel complete as a person we are hitting as you would say the 3rd level of Consciousness
Can't wait until you see the videos! Keep up the good work. They have a video for Hush, from Opiate. Just wanted to not have it overlooked. It's their first video. 10,000 Days is how long Maynard's mother was paralyzed. Wings for Marie says 10,000 days is long enough.
Initum NICE. Why not some live PUSCIFER. Check out THE RAPTURE live performance Lollapalooza Brazil. Maynard's HARMONIES with Carina Round are SUBLIME. 🤯🤞✌
Curiously I’ve always wondered why Triad is an 8 minute & 48 second track but only plays for 6:33 and 2:14 of silence. Is there some purposeful meaning for this?
Secret track at the end. It was meant to be listened to on a cd and usually it would stop on its own while you were in another room or going about your life you'd forget it was still playing. Then out of nowhere static and a voice. Its meant to freak you out lol.
Don't watch any videos until AFTER you hear the songs. It will just be a distraction and many might argue that they have nothing to do with the song meaning (that's up to you). Also there were a lot of really good fan videos but most have been removed since Fear Inoculum was released.
Such a cool updated Pink Floyd vibe not to compare I love them both thanks for your in depth reaction and discussion I miss my friend she would have enjoyed your channel also ,,,,f.ck cancer
@@initum1599 a very kind suggestion please put albums together in playlist. Thank you in advance. Also I love this. Tool is a life altering experience. Side-note the meaning of the tool is to use the music as a tool it's basically a model for living. and honestly I do not know of a better ideal.
I really dont like the album version of Triad, I come back to it every couple years to see if I still dislike it as much as I did before and I always do. I feel like it almost tarnishes disposition and reflection when it's lumped in as part of the 'holy trinity'. Oddly enough, the live version I have seen is badass and is one of my favorite live videos of Tool lol. I just don't like the album version at all. Here's the version I'm talking about: th-cam.com/video/2dwxTd5JZ50/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for feedback. We try do our best in post, we are very new to this though, we will think about our options to make new videos sound better. It's much harder than we thought
Scary part is when they play this live it’s still note for note the same........unbelievable musicians....
A track like Reflection is so complex, so thought out, has so much depth and just so incredible that it alone is greater than the majority of full albums produced by anyone else.
Reflection is Tools most underrated song imo.
I have always thought about Lateralus as "Maynard's Guide to Enlightenment", so I loved this conversation :)
Some thoughts on Reflection: Ego basically consists of a mind-made story we tell ourselves over and over and over again about who we are. And when we mistake this story for our true identity, it blocks our sense of connection to the whole. We view ourselves as separate from each other and alone in the world around us... we are "satellites drifting". A lot of spiritual traditions believe this is where our fundamental mental health issues stem from.
Maynard's Recipe for Enlightenment:
The Grudge - Forgive and let go of grudges before they weigh you down
The Patient - Learn to find patience
Schism - Communication is the most important aspect of any human relationship
Parabol/Parabola - The present moment is all you ever have, so embrace it fully
Lateralus - Quiet your mind and trust your intuition to see the divine nature of this human experience
Ticks & Leeches - This was never intended to be the album at all, but the record label pushed the band to make a more "radio-friendly single".
Those executives always ruin the industry, always making artists produce garbage or unwanted material so they can “appease” to audiences.
Reflection is my singular FAVORITE TOOL song....
+1
For now.. :P
The transition between Disposition and start of reflection is just heavenly to the ears and mind
The outro on Reflection gets me every time. I guess you could say I pine for it.
I love how you just vibed out to it without too much talking. That’s me every time I listen to TOOL. 👍
It's not the Holy Trinity without Triad ;)

You nailed it my friend, I couldn’t have said it better myself.
Thabks
We appreciate careful listening, and what a thoughtful response. Nothing to add, thank you
Yup. This is exactly why this song saved my life many times.
Yeah ! What he said
the holy trinity
Yes Reflection makes me groove like my spirit is connecting to a past time dancing and moving with my original tribe... my head bobs my shoulders dip my hips start to sway. It completely takes over my entire body.
Cant wait til 10,000 days! You two are my favorite Tool reaction channel!
Man, everytime I listen to reflection I can feel that third verse waking my soul. Then Adam takes over & my soul reveals itself through my eye ducts & the goosebumps all over my body. Love that song.
These three songs are the closest thing to an Ayahuasca trip, without taking Ayahuasca :)
You need to check out PUSCIFER and thier new albulm ..bullet train to iowa..ska soon. Is an ayahuasca trip
smoke dmt perfect song to just let go
I don't do Triad with disposition and Reflection, just the two together, the calming end of Reflection is how I like to end it
Same.
I thought I was the only one. No disrespect to Triad, but I'm usually emotionally spent by the end of this song and it seems a perfect way to close the perfect album.
I agree 💯, I wish the last 55 seconds went on for another 5 minutes
Triad is the expulsion of all hate that has been reflected on during Reflection.
It's you forcing out viscera of the mind and emotion now that you have reflected on your past.
For me, it's not complete until you scream at yourself.

Thank you, that's great to hear
Reflection is the most eloquent and complicated way of saying , the sun will come out tomorrow.
A really old American phrase meaning don’t give up if things are bleak today we get a chance to fix it tomorrow the sun is coming back to us, a new day
HOPE!
It also displays Maynard as a masterclass poet
The album 10,000 days refers to how long Maynards mom lived after her stroke.
It's a reference, but it's not specifically accurate. Fun fact: It's *rOuGhLy* 10,000 days between the first Tool release to the most recent album. Wew!
Refers to how long she suffered (with MS, I thought?) "10,000 days in the fire is long enough, you're going home..."
Reflection, in my opinion, is one of TOOL's top 3 songs ever created... I have listened to them for a very long time, and Reflection still hits me different every single time I hear it... ♥
The echo/voice effect ends as his voice gets stronger with the "and as I pull my head out, I am without one doubt"
Totally worth it to see the look on her face when the song hits in Triad. :D
It is so nice to hear intelligent, open-minded people discuss something amicably.
Love your channel
So excited that you got to the holy trinity! So many things can be said about these songs! The way I've come to conceptualize these songs is floating through the atmosphere in Disposition, then traveling through space with Reflection, and finally entering and passing through a blackhole with Triad. They are so primal and bring you on such a journey.
Disposition and Reflection are songs that should always be played together, but to me, Triad is a beast of an instrumental that stands alone.
Disposition/Reflection changed my life back in 01 when i saw them do it live.... Reflection is by far my fav song... imo Triad is it's own thing
Yeah the sleepy feeling is that meditative state it puts you in....it puts you in a trance.I loooooove Reflection's lyrics
Reflection does bring me to tears...
Initum the first track Disposition for me is to calm the Mind to prepare you for the second track to Reflect (Reflection). The third track Triad motivates me to act upon my Reflections. ✌
:)
This is the best reaction video I've seen yet. I really enjoyed the in-depth breakdown, and the time you took to analyze everything so thoroughly. Lateralus was released in 2001 and 10000 days in 2006... so, yeah practically right after.
Tool makes me wanna dance too :)
Reflection sounds to me what I imagine an actual ancient song or melody sounded like. Like the music going on in some crazy ritual in an opium den in Egypt or something. It conjures a very strong sense of place and time for most people I've discussed that song with.
It's been awhile since I listened to the holy trinity... Back to back to back...Nice video!

Triad is the final realization, the acceptance or denial of the original change. That’s just my basic view on it
1:02:28 Still with you. Your best reaction yet. Big fan.
Thank you so much :)
They both do a good job.
I fuckin love these reactions and I love both of you lol. Sending love from Omaha Nebraska, USA. Spiral out my friends!
Loved this reaction. 💯💯💯👍👍👍, I actually, fell "asleep", to speak, but, lucidly, felt, and had conversations with you, woke up, and had continuing conversations, then drifted away again. Listening to you cause you both get it. ♥️☺️
Reflection is mesmerizing
I would to see ya’ll react to some Porcupine Tree. “Anesthetize” and “Arriving Somewhere But Not Here” are the most popular (for a reason) but so many great songs by that band. “Blackest Eyes” “Trains” “Open Car” “Deadwing” to name a few. She has such a relaxing voice lol
From here, it is the Moon speaking: "As full and bright as I am / This light is not my own and / A million light reflections pass over me." Are you the Moon, reflecting other's light, or are you going to be the Sun, making your own?
Envy the man behind the camera, he found an awesome lady xD
Reflection is one of my favorite tracks, just sooo gooood!
She needed a moment after Reflection you could tell.
It's awesome to have Zlatan Ibrahimovic participating in a discussion about Tool songs
You must listening: Fear Inoculum, Pneuma live drum cam Danny Carey, Invicible and 7empest, all from new album TOOL!
This is excellent... Thank you✌❤
To me reflection is just saying we are a reflection of one another. We all need to check our ego at the door if we are to co exist peacefully together. When we cater to self indulgence and narcissism we bring eachother down.
Triad is a great song to run to.
Very interesting and compelling conversations. Thanks!
I go to sleep to reflection every night .
Get cha mind right !
Her eyes are amazing
Check out Adam Jones's new video "The Witness " for his 1979 Gibson Les Paul Custom Guitar. It has amazing visuals and "new" music from Adam, Justin, and Danny!
Reflection is such a beauty..... enlightenment.
I love triad as well... no lyrics but...many sacred triads come to mind I always think of kether chokhmah and binah
I vote videos
I like to call “her” Sophia
Build your astral body or learn how to accend out of Samsara before you “pine away”and reincarnate back to this place so “negative blind and cynical “
Lateralus is a a journey that begins in the center of your forehead and ends somewhere in the poles of Saturn.
Listening to this is always an experience
Can't wait until you see the videos! Keep up the good work. They have a video for Hush, from Opiate. Just wanted to not have it overlooked. It's their first video. 10,000 Days is how long Maynard's mother was paralyzed. Wings for Marie says 10,000 days is long enough.
This was an excellent discussion. But there’s more to the album, those are the last three songs, but You’re not finished with the album.
Oh yes....much love fir this.♡
The music videos are generally a distraction to the music but are certainly incredible art as well.
i always saw reflection as an allegory for the story of Echo and Narcissus
layered with other things of course
This is amazing. To help you understand the album more look into the art that is with the album Alex grey. 21 minutes is just longer then a dmt trip
Never clicked so fast in my life!
The video for reflection is the only one I would recommend
Initum NICE. Why not some live PUSCIFER. Check out THE RAPTURE live performance Lollapalooza Brazil. Maynard's HARMONIES with Carina Round are SUBLIME. 🤯🤞✌
What a ride!
I just can't figure out why everybody skips Faaip! xD
46 & 2 is the 🔑
Nothing else to say.
@@MostlyCloudy Faaip De Oiad? Thanks Selma , I love a good conspiracy!
@@jerryg1708 me too! lol the first time I heard it I was surprised just like that! lolol
Expand your journey with Puscifer and A perfect Circle
I'm new to this channel but she did APC the other day my bad a month ago. Hollow, magdalena
Great interpretations. Refreshing. Polacy?
Please do more songs from APC. The Noose, Passive, are both great
The Package and Gravity are great as well. Actually, the whole album is great.
@@rayyman6934 Oh thanks for reminding about The Package! That song is amazing
Don't watch any videos until AFTER you hear the songs. It will just be a distraction and many might argue that they have nothing to do with the song meaning (that's up to you). Also there were a lot of really good fan videos but most have been removed since Fear Inoculum was released.
Ever heard Porcupine Tree? Or Steven Wilson solo? You should react
do meditation
Could be a simple thought. But is it possible that its titled triad simply because only 3 members of the band are playing?
I can’t wait for you to listen to wings for Marie
Such a cool updated Pink Floyd vibe not to compare I love them both thanks for your in depth reaction and discussion I miss my friend she would have enjoyed your channel also ,,,,f.ck cancer
This is true🤦♂️, we will come to Your channel if you play TOOL again? 😎🤷♂️🇨🇦✌️
Mention this ? to me anything about ? to me and watch my disposition (the weather) change. (Mood)
Nice
😎✌️
Are u guys going to do The Voice of God AKA faaip de oiad? 👽👽👽
We will next week :)
@@initum1599 a very kind suggestion please put albums together in playlist. Thank you in advance. Also I love this. Tool is a life altering experience. Side-note the meaning of the tool is to use the music as a tool it's basically a model for living. and honestly I do not know of a better ideal.
Good shout. Thank you. Will do
I really dont like the album version of Triad, I come back to it every couple years to see if I still dislike it as much as I did before and I always do.
You need a better microphone. I can hear all your breathing and mouth noises. It’s a turn off and I can’t continue watching
Thank you for feedback.
We try do our best in post, we are very new to this though, we will think about our options to make new videos sound better. It's much harder than we thought
Bye bye then
