Mirror dinghy up the Arun

I sail with wind and tide up the river Arun in winter.

Yep was a bit of a risk leaving it - I took a bag with me to carry the outboard with me but on the day I just covered it over layed down inside I thought it was in public view and looked obviously in use so didn't expect anyone to really rummage through it. The whole lot isn't worth a lot so why worry too much I say. Cheers!

Just think, if you had a 9volt battery you could have tried to defib that mouse... I grew up on the river Stour around Canterbury, it is always a surprise to see just how big a lot of rivers are by comparison. Mind you, it is not controlled by the River authorities, so that is an advantage. Enjoyed the trip.

The Stour? I've looked at that in the past as a potential mirror sail.. Would it be doable in places?

@@backtothebarky I think putting in at Sandwich and getting out to the estuary and into the bay would be good. There is a colony of seals there too. I have a rowing boat at Grove Ferry Boat Club about 10 miles inland. There are some straights and sweeping meanders, and because it is flat the wind seems to blow quite well; I'm always getting spun when into the wind.

Many a kebab has been eaten on the slipway in LA. The river looked quite pleasent on the way up. Definitely a good call getting the train back.
Will there be a part two with success in reaching Pulborough?

Yes we all had it but wasn't too bad. Part 2? One day definitely yes! I always under estimate the time required.. I had no chance! Once I have my tabernacle done hopefully I can shoot some ofthe bridges that'll save a lot. Need to allow more time and would probably be wiser to go down from Pulborough to LA. That day tides were only right for going up obviously.

I have a similar gunter rig on my 12ft tideway dinghy and wanted to ask if you use 1 halyard or 2 on your mainsail? I have 2 but it's a bit of a faff and I wondered if it would work with just 1 on the yard? (The other is connected to the jaws). Keep up the good work.

Thanks Mike! Mirrors only have one as you know. I'm no expert on rigs... Is what you are describing not a Gaff rig as opposed to a gunter? If its designed with two perhaps you should use it as it is. My experience has taught me though that trying all sorts of lash ups with rigging is never a bad idea!

@mike gooch I have a Heron with Gunter rig with two halyards. Allows me to pull the gaff/yard up against the mast when I have the mainsail reefed, otherwise it falls away from the mast. With main not reefed, just the original single halyard (same as the mirror) works fine. Would love to have a Tideway but can’t get them in Aus.
