Sailing to Bembridge harbour for the family weekend
มุมมอง 2.7K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
We take the Barky to Bembridge for an August weekend break from the harvest. We had heard that the harbour run a family weekend every summer with loads to fun activities for the wee-uns and a bit of a party too. We had a nail biting crossing which got upto a F6, then a great time there so thanks to Duver Marina for that and also to Bembridge Siling Club - where we went to watch the women's worl...

Dragged my old speedboat out of the shed for a rag tag operation down the Thames on new years eve. Was concerned it might be too rough as there were gales down on the coast, however in the city it turned out to be fairly sheltered, plus it was low water which makes a huge difference. Happy new year!

Join us on this beautiful English summers evening for a simple sail and a fish - the tranquility of which is disturbed only by the running commentary of the Barky's crew... "Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats."

First sail in my new Barky

I've a new Barky! A Contest 25, my first proper fin keel yacht that's not a trailer sailer. This inaugural sail is just a solo day sail accross the Solent on a perfect day for it at the start of a new sailing season. In this video you'll see the Royal yacht club which is a lovely place to visit and an easy day trip over from Portsmouth harbour. What do you think? Leave a comment..

We launch our little yacht onto the Thames at Windsor, and stay the night to be there at that historic funeral to pay our last respects to our Queen. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.
Breezing into Pagham Harbour in a Mirror dinghy

Join me for a gentle sail from Selsey sea front into the beautiful and peaceful Sussex sanctuary that is Pagham Harbour - on a sunny day in late August. I drop my pushbike off at Sidlesham Quay on the way down. Launch at Selsey then sail right up the harbour. Jump on the bike, pedal back to the car then retrieve the boat and have a beer from the pub. Simple sailing simple pleasures.

Three short summer Mirror dinghy trips in SE England
It took me awhile to appreciate the Mirror dinghy... You know on those really old Tug boats; They had a great big thick "mop" ( That's what I think it reminds me of...)on the bow to protect ship she was pushing... You know what I'm talking about? I imagine a great big fluffy one of those on the bow of your boat...Give it that "tug boat" look...How about that? :)
I just looked it up; They're called "Pudding", or" Bow Beards" or something like that... :)
Needs it the amount of stuff I run into! Thanks for watching. I did another video last week I sailed up the river to Rye Harbour, but then lost my phone in Bembridge Harbour at the weekend, all the footage gone. Gutted!
Cigar makes a guest appearance on the dance floor
Bad for the lungs but in moderation good for the soul.
It's sad when a great adventure comes to an end. But one must end for another to start. See you on the next adventure soon. Happy says.
V True cheers Joe 👍🏻
The raid of the Barky, Huzzah!
I used to sit there.
Did you catch much?
The pleasure to be had from a boat is inversely proportional to its length. How true.
Let’s go champ 🌊🦀
Yer boy!! The sticker is rigged on the Barky!
Are you sailing out of the CSSA (POG) down Weevil lane?
🙂👍
What a great video, lovely to see the kids enjoying the adventure. Sorry Emily hit her head but it seems all is well.
Yes she was fine. Not much sailing in this one but half the reason I make these is so the kids can easily watch them back in the future. Thanks for watching!
subbed! I was told by my sailing club that without the jib my mirror rig would never go upwind. You seem to be getting on alright.
Nice one thanks. Yes they have a forward mast step position for using main only. Takes the balance point forward. Believe it's then a 'Cat' rig. I can't be bothered faffing around with the jib really, I'm not racing, I'm sure it will go a bit faster with the jib but only if there's a decent amount of wind, it doesn't seem to do a lot on light airs which I like sailing in.
Well I sailed Mirror in sailing regattas here in South Africa for many hours. What a fabulous buoyant little boat. My father actually ran a company in Joburg building Mirror dinghy's under licence to the Jack Holt designed boat sponsored by the Daily Mirror in the UK
Excellent video, thanks for allowing me to steal your idea. I've a home built 24ft trimaran and I've just given her a 23ft mast. I'm struggling to raise the mast without help however your design looks perfect for me.
Oh wow love hearing this. Tis High praise coming from someone who's built their own boat. Is it wood or fibreglass? Either way those things are so fast I'd love to sail one one day.
Ps if I did it again I wouldn't bother with a winch and a strap roller I'd just use pully blocks and a cleat.
The joys of simple boating, life doesn't get any better than that.
True words them. Wish I could get out there more!
Watching this brings back many happy memories of Mirror sailing.
Glad to hear that Phil. TH-cam is an amazing thing!
Enjoyed this video, and have all your others I have watched so far. I'm relatively new to dinghy sailing myself, so your channel is a good source of information. Listened to what you said about the Navionics app, will certainly be checking that out for use on my little boat, an 11ft Gull. Regards David.
Fantastic, glad you enjoy them. I've got a 25ft sailboat but often think and say it's probably as much if not more fun and adventure on the dighy. Roger Barnes is right! Good luck thanks for watching thanks for commenting.
Great video!
Where’s your life jacket?
..and a dinghy is cheaper to run. I really enjoy your vids..esp your catch phrase "..back to the barky..’. I learned to sail a dinghy one summer in Wraysbury but that was like 30yr ago. Won't know of it's like riding a bike until or unless I give it another go. Quite fancy a mirror…versatile little boats. Where/when did you learn to sail?
I should think it is like riding a bike. I started boating by buying a speedboat at 20 (still have it 20 years on see my latest vid 😏) then I learned to sail initially via the army. They use sailing a lot for adventurous training. It's good for that as it puts you in genuine danger at times amongst random people where you need to work together etc. Increased my sailing skills only really by going out solo on my own boats though. That's how you truly learn when there's none around to help you! The books do help too. Thanks for watching my vids matey, get back out on your own Barky it is glory!
Wot no cigar?
Haha is it my trademark? There is actually... Walking through the train station on the return trip near the end. Thanks for watching :)
That was pretty cool, thanks
Yer it's a fun way to spend new year and keeps me sober 😂. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing 👌 Happy new year 🍾
Happy new year onwards and upwards Sailor!
Happy New Year Tom!
And happy new year to you Knucker me old China 👍
Great design. I've been studying on various setups. For single handing your set up is superior.
Thank you very much Mark. I reckon I found a better one on TH-cam since but I've had another look but can't find it now, If I do I'll post it on here. Basically he used the boom as a gin pole (with mast hinged forward) and a series of pullys that fed lines to the winches and it somehow compensated for the change in lengths etc. Still, this solution is quite simple none the less. Thanks for the +ve feedback. Good luck with yours.
Great video. An area I know well, and have sailed in various sailing boats including a Mirror over the since 1974 and I now keep a yacht at Gosport with 100m of where you finished up at Cold Harbour. One thing I noticed is that the boom seems to droop at the back - and it shouldn't. Is the head of the sail fixed to the top of the gaff as far up as it can possibly go and do you pull the luff down tight the tack when it is all hoisted?
Thank you. Yes it's a great spot lucky to have a mooring there. Maybe the old sail is a bit out of shape. Luff is sinched down fairly tight via the downhaul. Head is tied off about 3 in below the hole for its tie, I could tie that up higher maybe. I have always left it that long as I read a rigging guide that said that. Would make the slot between the foot and the boom even bigger though. Not a racer anyway so I'm not too worried, but I'll consider it next time I rig her, might save the noggin a few knocks too. Thanks for watching!
Jabba looks great, it a tomohawk? I haven't been up to Fareham by sea but I'm going to find my mooring up in Christchurch next year, so I can trail my boat to more places like you do
No she's a Contest 25. Made in the Netherlands 1976. Trailer sailers are the way to go, one day I want to drag one to the med for a laugh! Thanks for watching.
just under fifty years since i last sailed a mirror dinghy you have brought back great memories
Was it this one? The sail is signed in permenent marker near the tack by the sail maker 1974 (I think you can see it in the video somewhere) I think I looked up the hull serial number that confirmed the year too. Glad I have been the source of some nostalgia for you. You should check out the 'Mirror Cruising' channel that guy is still sailing the sure he was possibly sailing them back then too! Thanks for watching :)
Seeing that you’d uploaded another video cheered my evening 😊 thanks. I had to google about brailing up the sails ! There’s always an interesting snippet tucked within your narration 👌 very enjoyable viewing thanks once again.
Ha ha I've just googled it to check it too... Alot of my sailing terminology is 200 years old because I'm a great fan of those historic napoleonic era novels. Whilst driving the tractor I listen to audible audio books. I've `read' all the Patrick Obrian (of master and commander fame) books twice over and all the Julian Stockwin Thomas Kydd books and most of the Richard Bolitho Novels too. For eg I got the word Barky and the name Tyger from them. They are v entertaining and inspirational and better than radio 2 by leagues and leagues! Great to hear that you are enjoying my vids - I have footage from a bigger trip in June of an abandoned channel crossing on the big boat (obvs not the mirror!) not got round to editing yet but will do soon so stay tuned if that sort of thing floats your boat so to speak.
@@backtothebarky thanks for responding Shippers ! I look forward to the abandoned Channel crossing vid 👌 I enjoyed your previous crossing with you pals 😜 I concur regarding the Napoleonic era of sail, the knowledge skill and experiences of those sailors was quite something ! Keep up the great content production, your narration is very good 👌 especially those snippets from the Napoleonic era 😉👏👏 ATB John
Great video thank you.
Thanks for watching Jim!
Hi is Jaba one of the Jester challenge boats? Best wishes Jim
@@jimray937 Yes it belonged to Basil Panakis who wrote a book called 'The Jester Challenge and beyond'. If you Google that you'll see her. So it's a very capable boat I bought it with the intention of attempting the Jester Baltimore challenge but have since changed my mind methinks 😏. Maybe once the wee ones are grown up I'll have a go. Still intend to keep her for a while and have some adventures with my crew, but Offshore single handing probably not for now.
@@backtothebarky I thought so. Nice boat. Yes keep her and have a go. I hope one day to do a Jester challenge. In my boat. A dream really, but would be great adventure. Best wishes Jim
Hi Tom it's rob
Your username is a bit mad mate!
Fantastic video as always - I used to live in Gosport and musty have driven past Fareham quay 100's of times and never realised the great dinghy sailing to be had in the harbour. You and Dave Sumner are seriously encouraging me to think about trading my heavy old Tideway 12 for a Mirror.
Cheers. Why what aspect do you think is better with these then? Fareham remember is v tidal and has a fairly small range when you can use it and as its at the top you'd be punching the tide alot, however it is still a decent spot for a Potter about. This was a 1 way trip worked nice you could easily do the same on the flood with the prevailing wind from Hardway that would be a good little trip.
It's all about where you are! I'm on Morecambe bay now where you get 3 hours if you're lucky - I am thinking about some one way trips though. Tideway is about 150kg to a Mirror's 45kg, so I figure lighter would be better for man-handling etc. I guess I also regret living in Pompey, then Gosport for 10 years when I was never into sailing!
Fabulous video, as always. So encouraging to see that low-season dinghy sailing needn't be awful. By an amazing chance I was up the Spinnaker Tower on the 25th November, my first time ever. Going to analyse all the video I took, for a small red sail...
Thank you. Ha funny coincidence that. I went up there for my boys birthday in August! Thanks for watching again.
miss sailing the one i played with. miss em even more now. its a bummer you cant get these on the west coast of USA.
Hello America. Thanks for the sub! Like the TH-cam name and profile pic 👍. Where did you sail the one you played with?
Woody should have his own TH-cam channel 😂
Ha ha yes!
Didn't your lad climb the same mast, no trouble, although it's a bit blowy.
Yes, but with a double halyard harness and no concept of the strength of a pop rivet - which those steps are afixed on with 😏
Entertaining cuz!
That was really enjoyable thanks for sharing.
Fantastic. A little different to the Mirror! I feel very nostalgic for those places that were a part of my childhood. Thanks for sharing what looks like a great holiday.
Have they changed much?
Thanks for bringing us along!
Haha that's your channel taken over with gamers 😂
Ha ha sadly yes!
Back to the Barky with Billy, a jolly young Jack tar 😊 another fabulous video Shippers 👌
Very good, nice to see Billy enjoying himself. Little lady didn't seem that impressed, but time should change that. I've only been out once myself this year. Poor weather and other commitments. Good to see you out, but don't envy you dragging The Barky back up that shingle. Best wishes Al
Yes it certainly raised my pulse a bit! It's a good spot though. Free to park and you can get in and out any state of the tide. All the slipways in that town are very high tide only.
@@backtothebarky maybe there's an opportunity here. No self respecting gym is complete without a shingle beach boat recovery machine.
Lovely kids there Sir. I'd like to see a little more wind and Billy at the tiller. Start em young to get their interest.
Yes I need to get him on a kids sailing course at a local lake maybe. Kids that live by the sea have a great advantage learning to sail shame we aren't closer to the coast could join a club and get him out every week.
Magic. Thank you for posting!
My pleasure!
I feel like I'm repeating myself, but I do enjoy seeing you out and about.
Repeat away matey, love the comments good and bad especially the good, glad to know some people enjoy these videos. I've got enough footage for 2 or 3 more racked up just need time to do the editing that's the issue! So stay tuned! 👍🏻
Bout bloody time! Looking good😁
It is I know. Thank you for your patience 🍻
Fantastic. Love your mini adventures. Look forward to the next one 👍
Great thanks for watching and for the +ve feedback much appreciated.
Great, keep the videos going, thanks
Thanks, will do!
Well done brings back memories of our first boat, kept at Seasalter sailing club many years ago! Even sailed it across the channel to Cape Grenez must have been almost 50 years ago!! Even same colour! Called Vee Jay can even remember number 29063!!
Even the same colour called vee Jay I can even remember the number 29063!!
Glad you enjoyed it. A very very much shorter trip this....You crossed the channel? Seriously? Wow that was brave. Bet you had to pick your weather carefully. Not so easy that back then! You should do it again and make a youtube video!
You've figured out a way to guarantee not to spill your mid-voyage beer 🍺
🤣👍🏻
My home waters, my sea scouts sail out of medway yacht club. Tge only McDonald's I can think of is up by Rochester m2 bridge. Was you hoping to go all that way?
Local but not a keen McDonald's customer clearly! Thats probably a good thing for your health... There's one just the other side of that road tunnel I just looked on the map it's at the end of a creek off the main river called Whitewall creek.
I love your videos, they're great.
Cheers Joe thanks for the comment good to know some of you like them. Didn't get very far in this one but suppose it doesn't matter was still a fun evening I love little trips like that.
