There have been numerous tests that show paper filters do a better job of filtering out fine dust than oiled foam style filters which is one of the reasons more of the OEM's are moving in that direction. On competition dirt bikes with much more frequent service intervals (top end rebuilds, valve checks, etc) this isn't a big deal,
Not exactly rocket science. Of course they do a better job of filtering... because paper filters are more restrictive. Oiled filters are trying to get near that filtering level, while drastically increasing airflow...
@@troyjollimore4100 not sure I completely agree with that. Filter performance also has to do with the surface area of the filter media. You can cram a lot more surface area in a pleated filter than you can with a standard foam filter. This is a benefit when the filter begins to load up. The smaller the surface area the more the pressure drop increases meaning less flow. To some degree filter design is Rocket Science. In the video below the Unifilter product loaded up and failed much quick than some of the other styles. I do run a pleated Guglitec filter on my 690 instead of paper. Not so much for performance but rather that I can field clean it if I need too. th-cam.com/video/JgZPkggKNiI/w-d-xo.html
@@Jarvis60 You're still stuck on the filtering aspect. This is where the oiled filters depend on the oil to catch and hold small particulates as they bounce off the oil-covered strands. Filter design IS rocket science, but it's also a big ol' vacuum sucking air through a straw. You want the balance of good pressure with good flow. Notice the oiled filters all say they will probably require more engine maintenance since they can't filter as well as pleated paper.
@@troyjollimore4100 I think we are saying the same thing. those "high flow" type filters like k&n suck, best engine killers you can buy. AND the stock filter works very very well. Yes, it does. As the engine sucks air through the FI inlet tube The amount of air available to be filtered is increased. To test this out, put a straw into a small cup that has had the top sealed off except for the straw. Suck in. Now use the same straw and put it in the end of a large soda bottle and seal it off and suck in with the same force as was used with the small cup. Notice a difference ? This was a problem 50 years ago when factory MX race bike builders/designers started using still air boxes. They did not allow for volume inefficiencies and designed their inlet openings too small.
The bigger opening actually reduces air to the engine because this backyard hack destroyed intake resonance those pesky Honda engineers designed into it. Just one look and Jethro knew those dang fool Japanese automotive engineers had screwed up the air intake design!
I dont understand the claim 200% more air. Dna says the filter increases flow by only 10% over the stock filter. So basically, you wont get anything extra than 10% increase in flow. It doesnt matter if you increase the air around it by 500%, it will only increae flow by 10%. Since 10% increase in flow efficiency is not that much, why do you think the snorkel size needs to be increased so much. Perhaps at it is, it already provides that 10% of air increase that it needs around it.
You will only reach the maximum flow of the DNA or any other filter if the flow to it is unrestricted… if the inlet to the air box is small this creates a restriction and flow inefficiencies due to turbulence. The larger snorkel is less restrictive and significantly reduces turbulence in the airflow allowing air to reach the filter more freely. Whether it needs to be as large as 3” I’m not sure… but it would be possible to optimise this using Bernoulli’s principle of flow if you wanted… or you just fit the largest inlet in the space available 😉

I like this bike it has potential but an trying to fix it will be a slow ongoing process
And to add to this. I totally agree. A paper filter on a dirt bike is so ridiculous. But in Hondas defense probably 90% duel sport riders are 90/10 and that isn’t ten percent road. Lol
This is ridiculous, its 124.50$ and your pushing this product? Unlike you jake we have to pay for our parts and dont just get them sent to us to make commercials for these over priced parts. Is there a cheaper alternative for people that cant afford a really expensive air filter?
Christ that is over priced, I paid $100 AUD (~70USD) for my DNA filter for my Triumph 1200XE. Shop around and you should see a better price. Or do the cheaper thing and buy the cheapest flat panelled Twin Air filter and use it to cut your own/make your own with a small section of alloy/plastic plate with a single right angle fold in it to make the lock tabs... 30minute job and $30 plus you can carry spares then if you actually ADV ride the bike. Also do not delete the filter and put a sock over the intake boot - the intake boot is exposed to way way more 'dirty' air and has a far smaller orifice. The result will be filthy clogged air filter far more quickly plus far worse flow than stock.
Imagine getting sponsored by a filter manufacturer, promoting their product then proceed to cover it up with yet another filter. Why even take on the sponsorship if you don't dare to use the product yourself.
It cuts down on cleaning. Inside the 300 air box gets pretty dirty so if you are out doing a big ride you would only have to clean the pre filter every second day or so.
Yeah and then re/over oil a pre-oiled filter.... DNA filters come pre-oiled... gold. Was thinking the exact same; if it only flowed 10% more than a stock filter it sure as heck isn't flowing better than a stock one now with a second oiled foam layer over it.
@@HoagesMoto not totally disagreeing, but with the new snorkel he has greater volume of air coming into the box, so maybe there is still an increase in flow. MAYBE, no way to really know for sure.

It will be an antique before I get one not to mention shipping. You guys always seem to have better access to mods for all bikes other than Moto. The US. IS ALL moto. I’m pissed. I like this bike it has potential but an trying to fix it will be a slow ongoing process
And to add to this. I totally agree. A paper filter on a dirt bike is so ridiculous. But in Hondas defense probably 90% duel sport riders are 90/10 and that isn’t ten percent road. Lol
Son unos XXXGIRLS.Uno de los mejoress conciertos Mañas no 7 se l 💯💞😍
No thanks,to much crap for not enough return.
This is ridiculous, its 124.50$ and your pushing this product? Unlike you jake we have to pay for our parts and dont just get them sent to us to make commercials for these over priced parts. Is there a cheaper alternative for people that cant afford a really expensive air filter?
@Travis Stamper yep, follow his link to buy.
just delete the filter and put a sock over the snorkel lmao
Bikerzbits in thailand sells oem filters for like $7 + tax & shipping....
If you're doing ghetto mods... what are you doing with a nearly new CRF?
Imagine getting sponsored by a filter manufacturer, promoting their product then proceed to cover it up with yet another filter. Why even take on the sponsorship if you don't dare to use the product yourself.
It cuts down on cleaning. Inside the 300 air box gets pretty dirty so if you are out doing a big ride you would only have to clean the pre filter every second day or so.
@@timjrvine You do realise he will still need to remove and disassemble both filters in order to clean it.
@@TXH1138 how would the greater air flow affect mileage?
Waste of time.
Almost an useless video.
10:06 Nice🙂. My Dad taught me this
No dyno because no power gained. Ever heard of "velocity" or Bernoulli? Math class is more difficult than cartoon class, that's a fact Jack.
