    The sad thing is there aren't performers like this or variety shows like this anymore.

      In those days the standard was so high. Today’s audience different mentality , everyone in the street is a singer. Now sadley music is a joke.

      Most definitely. I remember as a little girl watching The Bob Hope Christmas special with my mom every year. The closest thing anymore is Michael Buble’s Christmas Special but there’s not dancing like before.

      The really sad thing as well, is how the critics at the time tore them up. They were so good!

    • @micheleeastland
      @micheleeastland ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Yes, if those critics only saw what we have now for entertainment.😢
      Danny Kaye was great and no matter how many times I’ve seen the “Court Jester” I crack up laughing. “White Christmas” holds a special place in my heart as well.
      I’m only in my 40’s but well remember the days of the Bob Hope specials on TV, fun, wholesome family shows like Carol Burnette, The Muppets, the wonderful Christmas and patriotic shows that were on. When I was in college I sang in “Rosemary Clooney’s White Christmas Show.” She was the last living main cast member of “White Christmas” and there really was a sadness about that. She spoke of each of her starring cast members and as I look back, it really was an end of an era.

    Danny Kaye was a phenomenal talent! He never attempted to draw attention away from costars, he complimented them. That way everyone was brilliant. His ego wasn't ever an issue. I ceased watching TV years ago, too much garbage. I much prefer it when people have manners, dress decently, respect themselves and others, speak in sentences that are easily understood and behave in a way that makes you even more proud to be a fan. Our world could certainly benefit from more respect for self and others, dignity, compassion and grace.

      My Dad would hire Harry for “The Boulevard” supper club in Queens in the 50’s, and sing Day-O with him! I met Harry in Manhattan later on when I grew up. He was walking home on the upper west side of NYC. He’s so gracious, generous, and loved that we escorted him home totally entertained by just listening to him. He loved it. I wish I knew my Dad hired him back in the day. He would have loved reminiscing about that time. What an amazing talent. I love them all in this video. Danny Kaye so amazing! Lucille gave some much as a comic! And Louis!! Wow! Those were times to be born in. Not the overly tech world it is now and getting more robotic. I’m sure Harry found ppl walking down the streets of Manhattan glued to their phones quite odd. I’m sure barely anyone noticed him being fixed to their phones, missing out on these amazing souls passing them by. Love them all… 🙏🙏🙏🙏

      I’m jealous. Although I wasn’t exposed to anything of my era until I was a teenager. I grew up with all the greats from the 30s to 70s. I had a cassette player in my room and my own bunch of cassettes my parents copied from their own or from their LPs and one of them was Danny Kaye the Hans Christian Andersen soundtrack. I loved that one so much. I also had tommy Steele and Doris day just to name a couple more. I did get into modern music, movies and entertainment as a teen and up until my early 30s but I then reverted back to the good stuff.

    Special memories growing up watching Danny Kaye with my dad. He never got the credit he really deserved for all his talent! I dont know many that could do the tongue twisters like him. He sang, danced and acted beautifully, and seeing biographies about him being insecure makes you wonder why? He was amazing! I always thought he was a good looking guy, yet they critisized his features. I thought in his height he was an elegant dancer, and his voice was just as good as the rest. Today's actors can't even do half of what the old "vaudeville" types could do. So sad to see that era go. I think it's time for a comeback of those talents. The humor was outstanding.

    A nice way to honor the memory of Harry Belafonte. Danny Kaye is one of my all-time favorites. In the Goldan Age of Hollywood and TV, performers traded on their personalities, not their "brand". The audience felt that they knew the performer, and could trust them -- that even if the performer went to the edge (here Danny does "black" which would be "cancelled" today), it was a journey together with the audience, and everybody would come back down ok.

    Jan 2020 been watching since before god lol. I’m 65, and watched every pioneer in the industry. The 50’s were exciting when Tv exploded and most all had a little black n white the entire family watched. Our pioneers were incredible and no movies will EVER hold a candle to these greats! They’ll have to surpass them. Danny was supremely talented in his dancing singing and acting but my fave was Hans Christian Anderson because he really loved and treasured that role, as he said in an interview back then. Treasured pioneer!!! 🙏🏻❤️

    Louis Armstrong and Danny Kaye! How lucky the world is to have a glimpse of two great Talents together from years past, so they can see what real and true Talent is over and above the"talent" manufactured" in this day and age, whose entertainment life and be measured in days, weeks or even months, depending on what "social media" thinks. I get misty watching Satchmo, and I'm proud to admit it. He is one of several people whom I never tire of watching anywhere and doing anything, right alongside The Nicholas Brothers and Cab Calloway to mention two of many more, including Harry Belafonte, whom the world lost only days ago. Thank you so much for posting even a few minutes of true entertainment!

    The days of multi-talented performers are, sadly, long gone. Put Danny Kaye and Sammy Davis Jr. on a stage or screen, and kick back--they could do it all.

    • @loripounds61
      @loripounds61 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I am not disagreeing with you, but I do think it might be more a matter of the proper material not being written/composed as an avenue for the multi-talented. For instance, Lucille Ball's bit made me think of Cindy Lauper. Off the top-of-my-head others, include: Michael Jackson (lost too early, but still of this generation) had serious acting skills; Hugh Jackman; Neil Patrick Harris, etc.
      You do raise an issue dear to my old-fashioned heart. We should encourage networks to continue to bring back musicals! There have been a few recently ("The Sound of Music,"* "Peter Pan," and "Grease"* were some of them), on network t.v., and they seemed to have been surprisingly popular. The big-screen version of Les Miserables (sp?) helped to begin the resurgence. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
      *I am not endorsing these examples as being better than the originals. Simply glad that their re-introductions may help to inspire the younger generations and boost the appreciation of -- and a "demand" for -- multi-talented performers.

    • @manipool
      @manipool 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are still multi-talented people. Less is asked of them now. Justin Timberlake and sing, act, dance, Bruno Mars can do the same..there are others, but the past generation was the best.

    • @matejkrajnc1797

      Yes, actually my good friend the restaurateur Madame Wu of the glamorous Wu’s Garden Restaurant n Santa Monica, California had a special stove in the kitchen for Danny to come in and cook! He loved the food at the restaurant, but he also wanted to show off to her and the chef, how he could cook Chinese food as well!
      Madame Wu just passed away at 104 last year. She was an elegant lady with every celebrity going there for dinner. I met quite a few there while helping her to write her cookbook, but not Danny unfortunately.

I have just laughed until I cried watching him with Harry Belafonte, then seeing the incredible Lucille Ball with him eating at the French restaurant and topped off with Satchmo - unparalleled pieces all of them. I have bookmarked your post so I can watch whenever I need a "feel good" moment. I'm sure my cats think I have finally gone crazy - laughing out loud at this as I watched it all by myself.
