    What a heartfelt talk before playing The Stars and Strips.what a different the USA would be in if we heard more expressions of love for all others and acted with love rather than distain and lived with pride for the advantage of living in America. There is only one Danny Kaye sad to say. Thankfully God gave us the one of him.

      You could say that for the whole world...
      Born in 1911, lived through both world wars, Danny Kaye was a UNICEF ambassador for many years. This Stars and Stripes was played at the end of a two hours long concert in which the New York Philharmonic Orchestra were making music with and being entertained by a man who raised, through the course of his life, six million dollars for musical charities and musicians' pension funds.

    My father,for many years deceased by now,was a professional violaplayer in a Dutch orchestra.Mr.Danny Kaye did a conducting performance with them and my father told me his conducting abilities were spotless.

    You gotta love the three piccolo players playing an entirely different melody than the rest of the orchestra. Bravo to the entire orchestra and Danny Kaye.

      Isn't that what they call harmonizing? :c)

    • @merryhunt9153
      @merryhunt9153 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That is called a descant, a high part that plays its own melody in harmony. The piccolo part for this march is probably the most famous and beloved descants in America. The piccolo player often gets special applause.

      @@pamibeau When one group of instruments plays one melody and (using this piece of music as an example) the piccolos play a different melody which is related to and fits rhythmically and harmonically, the piccolos' melody is called counterpoint.
      Descant usually means a melodic line which is higher than the principal line. Counterpoint, more generally, is not necessarily of higher pitch. One example is Beethoven's ninth symphony, fourth movement: the cellos play the main theme and are then joined by the bassoons playing a countermelody (counterpoint).

      Me too!.We didn't have a bandstand in our town but our high school marching band sure did great at football game half-time shows! No flames, no cannon, the peope who sang the Star Spangled Banner didn't try to sing like they had swallowed a frog. [No offense meant to frogs.]

    Not really Sousa's best march, because many of them are in a different league to this one. But this performance was exemplary, and brought out the best from it. Great stuff! Thanks for uploading the video.
