Danny Kaye attended the same high school as I did in Brooklyn (Thomas Jefferson HS) some years before I did (I started in 10th grade in 1964). My 10th grade geometry teacher, Haskell Epstein, apparently was the one who finally had him flunked out of high school. I later sat at a desk in which he had carved his name. Small world : )
As a kid I saw an excellent comedy "Knock on Wood" (circa 1954), which I believe was Kaye's funniest.... I still remember some scenes. Greetings from Uruguay
I, with my parents, saw him in London round about 1952 when I was ten. He sat down on the front of the stage with his legs hanging over the edge and spent about ten minutes demonstrating the different kinds of laughs that people have. The entire audience were in tears of laughter from the first minute. It takes real talent to sustain pretend laughter like that.
Danny Kaye...so brilliant. Could've been straight outta Vaudeville one moment, sophisticated and subtle the next. He was also apparently a fabulous cook, well known for his Chinese culinary skills.
I used to sing in musicals...I had a young man with me...he was super!! Such a super voice ,funny etc! I told him he reminded me of Danny Kaye ...he loved me
I was a wee lassie of 5 years old when my granny took me to see Hans Christian Andersen and I fell in love with him then and until he died, his talent was universal and he is sadly missed, rip Danny x

So, my Danny Kaye story. This is true. In 1961 I was an army lieutenant and was at Fort Sill Oklahoma, and assigned to Korea. So I got in my car and headed west. Along the way I stopped in Las Vegas, not to gamble, but maybe to see a show. And Danny Kaye was appearing. I could not get in. Sold out. Some people were getting in and I figured that I did not have the looks, or the money, so back on the road to Korea. Well, Christmas in Korea, on the DMZ (I was with the 1st Cavalry Division) looked bleak, but at the last minute we were told to volunteer to assemble at the gym, and SURPRISE! It was Danny Kaye. Just him and his piano player. No Bob Hope show. Just him and his piano player. And for an hour he went through all of the acts that we heard about, but never saw. The crazy Russian, the conductor, the famous skit with the actress, who was not there, but he did both parts anyway. And in the audience was soldiers with rifles, pistols, machine guns, all loaded because we were on the DMZ, and I am praying that they don't drop one. It was really wonderful, and I am sure I saw everything that was in the Las Vegas show, and more. So I thanked him then, and I thank him now. He did not have to do that. And it made one Christmas night in Korea pretty special. He was special.
I certainly loved this man. He was such a great actor and comedian. As I watched this video I saw Rowan Atkinson in many of Kaye's mannerisms. In fact, Mr. Bean would do a great job here. Both are very clever actors.
Note about an uncredited performer. One ultimate test of a great actor is the ability to play a bad actor. Same here, takes an ultimately skilled trumpeter to play like a BAD trumpeter. Bravo! As for Danny Boy, unrivaled at what he did
You're right about that. His name is Phil Smith. He retired from the NY Phil a few years ago, and is now teaching at Georgia State in Atlanta. He was just making a name for himself when this was taped. I'm sure this didn't help.
