I think the subject/non model should be given a few chances to " snap" a few pictures of the photographer him/herself during the session to " equalise" the atmosphere .
I know when it comes to having MY picture taken , I freeze up , even though I try some of the breathing exercises that I recommend for my subjects/non models .

Thanks Claudia. I’m wanting to take photos of my wife who is always so critical of herself. Showing images that turn out good might be just what she needs to feel better about herself. I’m not a photographer but I really enjoy taking pictures so your advice is so helpful. Thanks.

Hi, I am an artist and use photographs to work from I do not do the "Typical" photo shoot where the models starts to act like she has a seizure and then i just start snapping photos really fast. I pose the model the way my drawing might look and then take one maybe two or three quicks photos (Her expression might change in a split second and I need to catch that.) My problem is finding women who understand what i am doing and can be a blank canvas. I do not like to work with "Models" because they are set in their ways and they do not follow directions very well. Most of the women in my area think I am just a guy with a camera and do not take me serious. They think my artwork is just a hobby. I have yet to find any videos that deal with my specific problem. I guess it is a subject that is tooo hard to explain. If you can give me tis that would be great. I used to be able to add a link to show what I do and give an idea of the problems I am having but TH-cam stopped that for some off reason. Thank you for any info you can give me.

Having them jump and down on a small exercise trampoline for a few minutes does wonders to relax them if they're stiffs during a shoot. So does throwing punches at sparring pads.

Very generic. I don't know how this works if I'm photographing my wife and kids who are not models.

    • @nwiegman

You have a point. Her tips are solid. You can not do a good job because you are too close. It will be harder for them to be themselves around you; instead they will be wife and child. It will be harder for you to capture the candid moment. Having them wear what they feel good in might be a start. I would add tell them to bring a prop’ as well, something that they like, that is important to their life- a pet, a hammer, a whisk, or you take the shoot to their room or their special place- the ball field, where they play. Even as an experienced photographer- I felt these basic tips were a good reminder to me of why I should be taking THEIR photo-it is about THEM. Not me, not the gear, but them and the light. Thanks for your comment, it helped remind me why it is so hard to “shoot” family and the familiar. It is a whole different dynamic.

@@nwiegman Great advice. And Abhishek - your situation is definitely more specific. I am not a family photographer and I can understand how your own family can be very tricky. But I very much agree with Nelson's thoughts - you might have to take them out of the studio and into an environment that is more engaging. Bring in their hobbies, etc. Make them forget they are in front of the camera. Best of luck to you !!
