  • This is 4 things I hate about Sleeping Gods Distant Skies, more I'm not angry just disappointed really.
    Sleeping Gods Distant Skies is a campaign board game that is best played solo. In fact I would say this is the best solo board game of 2023. But it is not without its flaws, so lets look at 4 things I wish got changed for the follow up to my number 1 board game of all time Sleeping Gods.
    / boardgamebangers
    Chapters
    1. Combat repetitiveness and length
    2. Character customisation and growth
    3. Improve multiplayer
    4. Early Exploration Options

    That's a helpful video, nice details!
    My non board game suggestion would be to put your light higher or make it softer. It creates a reflection on your teeth that is almost too distracting!
    Thanks for the video!

      Hey mate great advice. So yes after this video I did change my lighting and got a softbox diffuser. The lighting should be much better on my latest videos. Actually a lot has changed since this video - a 2nd camera, upgraded lighting and an overhead setup. Want to keep improving my quality going forward 👍

      It's a very fair comment indeed. With any of these games, you really want to explore different paths as once you seen an area you know it

      I can play Pandemic: Iberia 40 times in a row, every six months: but these story games are probably best left a couple of years before replaying after a couple of campaigns...

    That campfire option how exactly do you envision it? How does it skip the samey start?

    • @BangersProject
      @BangersProject  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Something like if you have zero camp-fires you get 2 discount on all skill checks and 2 free damage on all enemies. 1 campfire and you get 1 skill discount and 1 free damage on all enemies. From 2 camp-fires you are back to normal rules. That way if you want to explore early you get a small incentive before you start getting your camp-fires and naturally gain your strength through new cards

      @@BangersProject COOL!
      I agree with your 4 points but contrary to SG which I sold because I found it a pile of crap, DS is a keeper for me.
      And while the DS product is on the roast spit, let me add to your points a fifth:
      The RB clumsily tries to tell you to shuffle all events together regardless of event level. Which is just stupid, after having used tiered decks in SG1. So how to make a proper Event deck:
      1. split L1 shuffled deck into two halves.
      Same for L2, L3.
      Keep the cat aside.
      2. merge 1 half of L1+L2 into deck 1.5
      3. merge 1 half of L2+L3 into deck 2.5
      4. stack L3, 2.5,1.5 and L1 on top. Shove the cat roughly into the middle.
      Then you have an event deck that gives you a sense of progression.
      (SG1 had calm, windy and deadly decks, somehow RRG has forgotten the good parts from their own product it seems)

    I'd like some more interaction between the crew members. Maybe a romance option? Maybe someone leaving the group permanently or temporarily. Also, why not have a pool a more members and we pick some of them randomly for each campaign? For variety. I feel some aspects of the game are rushed and they've put too much effort to streamline the gameplay. Everything is easier now. Also the old combat was better. Healing inside combat is like thematically so wrong

      Firstly sorry I did not receive this message notification. But yes I would loved to have seen some extras pop up between the crew. What about you stumble across extra characters in your journey and they decide to join you, boom in the box you find extra character boards to swap out one of your original members "who walks back to wait with the plane". These new characters could really shake things up and add some spice to the story. The ideas are endless!

    Thanks for the video! I am about to buy any play Sleeping Gods or the Distant Skies (I have money only for one of them), and I have no idea which one could be better. Maybe if anyone who reads it, could help me out, would be great - highly appreciated! I do not have the option to make a try with any of the games, I have to trust on videos. I have never played a game with story, not any open world one, and I am sure I loved it - one of them :) Thanks in advance!

      Hey Zoltan my apologies I never got your message notification. I truly believe that both are similar enough that I can highly recommend both. My only suggestion would be finding the cheapest one available. It is possible the original now might me easier and cheaper to get, especially in the 2nd hand market. All the best with it, let me know which one you decide on 👍

      Hello! Thank you very much taking your time, and answer my question. Finally I bought the cheaper one :) the original - I play it with my wife, and we both enjoy it very much; this is a great game! Thank you again for both the video, and the answer. @@BangersProject

      This is so great to hear. Yeah I'm really yet to find someone who hasn't enjoyed the story in Sleeping Gods. I played this with my partner when she was just getting into games at that time and she loved it also. It's like a captivating book that you are a part of 😀

    Um, some people do NOT consider Sleeping God a solo only game. A lot of people ... who don't want to manage all that information by themself.

    • @BangersProject
      @BangersProject  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      As the group of characters never split, I truly don't think you are gaining much more info by just playing solo. Sure you may have a few more adventure, combat and ability cards but that's it. Management wise is pretty similar solo or multiplayer.

    • @Anarchosyn
      @Anarchosyn 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I felt his point was more along the lines of "it is marketed as a multiplayer game, but it's basically a solo game that had multiplayer shoehorned in."
      In short, while it can be played in a group, there aren't really many mechanisms that exist to support the sense of an independent decision makinhg space. While true, I would say the card play feeds into the cooperative framework, especially the rule where ability cards can be used *at any time* to support *any character* (even from characters not explicitly participating in the experience).

    • @BangersProject
      @BangersProject  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Ahh thank you then we are very much aligned. This is 100% a solo game with multilayer shoe-horned. I just feel the game should allow you to split into parties. This then would truly feel cooperative as maybe quests have different tasks to achieve to utilise the party splitting in 2 groups and fulfilling separate parts of the quest. Just an idea.

    • @kosterix123
      @kosterix123 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sleeping God?? You mean SG1. SG1 is not a best fit for solo, best with more. DS however feels most natural as a solo.

    • @Anarchosyn
      @Anarchosyn 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@kosterix123 They're both technically called Sleeping Gods (the sequel just follows that with a colon, and "distant skies"). I think he is referring to the latest, and I think the solo charge can be applied to both titles equally, at least along the lines the video creator referenced.
      I hear you - the original ate up a ton of space, and had you managing 9 people in solo.. but it really wasn't that difficult. Nothing like trying to play Gloomhaven or Spirit Island multi handed.
