    To someone that has played plenty of Catan, with Seafarers, and C&K - this doesn't seem that appealing to me. Would I try it, of course! But I am not very compelled to purchase. To me seafarers + C&K together is the ultimate combination, with base Catan feeling stale. There already is a Dragon expansion btw - that's fun too.

    • @BangersProject
      @BangersProject 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah great point on the Dragons expansion and it certainly ticks a few boxes especially the module that let's you hunt dragons. I think this could be expanded more though, in my head perhaps there is minor conflict between players and use of magic, or the hexes are simultaneously worker placement spots as well as resource gathering. The Catan world is so amazing there isn't much they couldn't achieve with this base system. In regards to your first point, I'm definitely the opposite. For me this is an upgrade over base and Seafarers. Perhaps it is that burnout from playing the original so much but to me this is more appealing and satisfying experience. Appreciate the comment 👍

    I would probably prefer to just purchase some of the classic expansions, which i feel would not work too well with new energies

    • @BangersProject
      @BangersProject 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I would say that some of the old expansions could work theoretically but the old classic style visually may clash with the new modern hexes. It got me wondering though, I might try and give this a try and see how it looks 🤔

    Seems really cool. But I probably won't get it because of the player count. I prefer to buy only games that have a solo. So for a new Catan, a solo would be nice. That wizard idea you had sounds good too!

      Great point Donna, looking back on the video I should have mentioned that a lot of this video is based on assumed knowledge of the original Catan. That includes that this is still only a 3-4 player games and so again it mimics the original. I couldn't agree more that Catan truly needs a proper solo in its franchise. I think for now besides the 2 player only versions, I always treat Catan as best at 4 players.

    River Valley Glassworks looks deceptively simple but it's a lot more thinky than it looks like. I've been playing a lot on BGA. All Play is the main sponsor for Dice Tower. They used to be known as BoardGameTables. KTBG games have different artists. Can't wait for Maki Master to deliver. Very intrigued by Lairs and Cafe Baras as well.

I'm shocked KTBG have different artists, I just assumed it was the same artist as they all flow so well with each other. Power Plants is super underrated and Creature Comforts is just perfect, I very much look forward to every release from them now. Appreciate the comment 👍

      Both games are similar enough that I don't think you can pick a wrong choice. I think it boils down to preferred theme for each individual. But I do agree that Wyrmspan just edges it out with the gameplay but it's extremely close. For me though it will always be the birds #teambirdnerd 🐦😁

      I think Tokaido is beautiful but the decision space is quite limited. Namiji ramps it up a little so is my pick out of those 2. Duo is just a nice fun race against each other and it never feels nasty. Sure you want to make sure you ain't leaving them with the best dice but it's still quite pleasant compared to a lot of other 2 player only games. Would love to hear your thoughts when you play it 🙂

    I was having the same issue with the game. My solution was to substitute the d6 dices with d4 dices. It added one additional factor of 1 in 4 chance of not producing resources.

    Completely off topic. But is that a remix of White Noiz from Silent Hill 2 playing in the background? I've just bought this game. I do get thr feeling thst is a good mix of cascadia's tile placement (plus the beautiful artwork) and the ruthlessnes of Bosk. I usually go for more friendly types of games but sometimes it feela good to really be mean. 😅

    • @BangersProject
      @BangersProject 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I will be honest I have no idea the music now. TH-cam provides heaps of free music and I grabbed it from that. Would be awesome if that was what it was. You nailed it with ruthless, but a good type of ruthless I reckon. Another game not as ruthless that we are playing a lot is Land vs Sea. Similar vibes but seems a little more friendly and forgiving.

      If you can hit on number 1 (a good games group) naturally number 2 and 3 will happen more. I found even though some of the games my games group choose on their turn doesn't actually gel with me, it's good to play a big variety so you know what is your perfect type of game for me!

    Gametopper offers something that hyperexpensive Game Table does not. If you play table top miniature games and want a 6 x 4 foot play space for your neoprene game mats if you look at the dimensions of the recessed play area of those game tables they aren't big enough. They might be 6 x 4 but that is total size so only on top of the table if you have a way to add a top can you play on it at that size, but then how is that different than a normal game table of that size. it's not reeally other than maybe you can add the cup holders and such on the side. Game topper offers a solution at their largest size. Now you have a gametable that is sexy to play table top miniature games in as well as rpg and boardgames, and it is portable. So if you go set up at conventions you have that option. If this is only for y our gaming man cave then no it doesn't matter the portability, unless you want to take a gaming table with you someplace.

    • @BangersProject
      @BangersProject 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I do agree with the gametopper sizes. It really does a lot of things great. And I love swapping over my 3 neoprene mats. I am very happy with the product for sure but it did dawn on me it's just not what I want in my room anymore. I think because my table underneath the topper just doesn't match that I want that all-in-one table because it will make my room complete. My board game room is my 2nd home (within my home) that I spend so much time in, I think I just want it perfect. Hope that makes sense.

    My first one was backing the boardgame Virus on Kickstarter. I watched a Rahdo video, liked what I saw in the gameplay, but once I got the game, the components were a shell of what they seemed on screen, and the gameplay...I regretted backing. I spent 81 with shipping, and later, I know I could have maybe found another way to sell out, but I just traded it for 25 dollars. I ate that value and moved on with my life. Maybe I could have gotten slightly more. I might have another small regret how I parted with it after I backed it. I learned to take Preview Reviews with a grain of salt and realize that I need to do more due diligence and give deeper thought. I never made that type of bad decision again. Second regret. When you see something in a pledge manager if you think you might want it GET IT. Add it to the cart, because later on that item might not be available anywhere, not even the company who made it, and the false assumption you'll see the item later on in retail or even on the companies own website. I backed This War of Mine, and pased on Memories of the Past, a book featuring the thoughts of the game's characters of past events before the game which can be read to grant some type of benefit or modifier, sometimes negative, in the game but all of it adds to the atmosphere and depth of the game fleshing out these characters as more 'realistic' people who had lives before the horrible situation they are in now, living in a war zone. It was only 10 euro. I should have just added it. I regret that. I also passed on the resin furniture sets which were more expensive, like 65 euro and since we already pay subsidized shipping at the time, ie cheap shipping, I should have just added. Later I contacted Awakened Realms and they said I could get one of the few last copies of the This War of Mine resin furniture sets (both basic and advanced) but the cost for shipping from Poland was 50 euro so 65 + 50 = 115 Euro or that. I was not willing to pay all that shipping for that. I know I coulda/shoulda and they most would be collector items now. I just could not justify that, but I regrated then NOT adding when I had the chance plus the Late pledge period gave me one last chance that I passed on before reaching out later on to AW. I also didn't get the Rubble Die, a special die, or the plastic Cat miniature. I felt 4 euro for a single plastic cat model is too much. In the end, my OCD kicked in and I found a way to make my own Rubble Die and made my own chart as I managed to get a pdf copy of the Rubble Die chart so yes I have it, but its not the 'real die or cards'. Yet, I have the game function of it so I'm ok. I also found a plastic Cat mini, used from another game (Deep Madness) and now I have another plastic cat model or two from other games so I'm good on that. I don't have Memories of the Past and would love a PDF copy of it or simply to buy it for a reasonable amount At the time of the kickstarter I was told and thought that all these items could be gotten later on either on their webstore or were going to retail like the Memories of the Past. I thought I'll just wait if i change my mind. Wrong. I then had huge regret but learned over time to let it go, find ways to mitigate, like making my own Rubble Die solution, Cat miniature and I just live without the fancy furniture. Yet, when they had, say Robinson Cursoe boardgame come out and they added all those extra things I knew if I got a game like that to get all that stuff so I learned from my mistake. I have other regrets but those two are some of the first that taught me lessons about backing: 1) Get something in the pledge manager if you even the smallest liking for it or think it might be useful to you later on. No matter how small a feeling. I faced this again later with Vampire Hunters. I did not get a few of the things later regretting it find out later I can't get it, but if I did it was on Ebay for far more, such as the Japanese inspired heros and so later on when they did a reprint campaign via their 'music soundtrack campaign' I jumped on it and got all the things I lived without regretting I didn't get. I was good on that, and later on I found out This War of Mine had a short campaign where they offered things for Ukraine. I went there excited to find it was for languages other than English. I thought 'Memories of the Past in Polish? no thank you. I now know when I go to the pledge manager get all things that you have even the slightest interest in. I even normally pick up at least one extra dice pack. Another story. I got extra dice once for Warzone boardgame, three sets and later sold those sets off and some extra turrets minus two of them, but then after selling the extras I got I found myself wanting at least one more Dice pack, so I re-bought the dice at a higher cost also eating some shipping cost. I sold a set for 10, later to repurchase for 17 the same thing. I know I'm a bonehead, but I quenched my regret and moved on. Meaning, if you buy extra, KEEP IT, don't sell it and find yourself living with another form of regret in what amounts to your own aftermarket for your game. It was like kicking myself in the nuts. I'm sure people have purchased games, sold them, only to repurchase or trade for them back. Same sort of regret. I had the TV Room Promo for This War of Mine, but sold it for 20, only to later on forget, then think I want that, but then remembering 'oh yeah you did own it and sold it and now you want it back bonehead. My solution. Live without it, or just create my own homebrewed version. I did that. I printed out a color copy of the card, cut it used spray glue to bond the two halves and now have a homemade copy of the card, which I call my 'ghetto version' of the card. I won't pay 20 dollars or more for it again. I made my choice and I am forcing myself to live with it. 2) I had a chance to back Rising Sun (by CMON) passed on it, had a chance to do a Late Back, passed on it, and then after the game finally delivered I played the game the summer after it was too late to Late Back. I liked the game. I though 'ok I can get the retail version OR the kickstarter version ' and I wanted the kickstarter version. I paid 280 for it and the extra minus I didn't get a playmat which if I had just backed the KS I would have gotten the same thing for 200 that included the Playmat. In that game having a map that is 20 percent bigger is something I think good for it. I ate the 80 dollars extra cost and had a regret not backing the kickstarter. So if you feel you might like a game back it, but in the case of Rising Sun seeing the map I didn't get the game. I was not impressed with the game map. I didn't come from knowing about or playing Bloodrage. I get it now. So when Anhk came, I backed it and got all the things including the playmat Also I had a similar regret not backing Solomon Kane boardgame. I later wanted that game, should have backed paying the 220 plus shipping, let's say 275 to 300 dollar cost, so later when the 2nd printing came I wanted it, but it was a lot more, like 600 or so. Double the cost basically. I passed on it, but yes I'm glad I did as I dodged one of three bullets form Mythic Games as if I had paid via their webstore. I would have lost that 5oo to 6oo dollars. Gone. I also backed for 1 euro Monsterpocalypse but then didn't pay for the pledge which would have amounted to 600 or so. I dodged a second bullet. I didn't back Darkest Dungeon, another bullet dodged, but I did back 6 Seige and got hit square in the chest for the "Ransom" cost. I paid it, but it was like being financially assaulted. Still, I learned most of the Kickstarters do fulfill, even if some have issues, and I have a list of those, but in the end, I got my stuff and some of these are stories where there is a lot of details how I did that, but I did, and one was simply for an add on I wanted, and wanted to pay for, then did, and still didn't get the thing I paid for. After 1.5 years later, I finally got the owner to send it to me. It was stupid how hard it was to get that one item, and yes I could have simply added it to the Add ons for that game, but didn't then had regret not doing so, and all I was trying to do was get that regret fulfilled. It took 1.5 years partially due to the pandemic and they fact they shut down the postal service so the guy said he could not go mail things. Maybe he was lying, but in the end, I did get the item. Again, my rule if you think you might want something just add it to the pledge manager, don't regret it and then try and get it later on.

    Everyone knows you don't need the minis. It's been said so many times and every time it's strangely enthusiastic like it was in this video. The people buying games with minis don't need them, they want them.

    • @BangersProject
      @BangersProject 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The problem is I thought I wanted them until they turned up. Recently I have tried D&D for the first time, and also tried my very first collectable card game. I'm willing to try new things that are not my standard beige euro, and Zombicide was my very first proper minis game that I thought I wanted to try. But the time between ordering and it turning up for whatever reason I lost that passion to try this series. The magnitude of boxes was also very overwhelming. This was just a step too far for me and I sold it without ever actually playing the game.

    My biggest gaming regret was trying to get back into magic the gathering and I meticulously built a 3000$ commander deck just to realize I didn’t like how the game was nowadays so I sold almost all of it for half price. Yep. Also forgot to mention I bought all the cards at the height of their value and then sold them off after they started to go down in price

      This is such a great post thank you. I can 100% see how addictive this is and the idea of building the ultimate set. While I have never played Magic, I am very much hooked on Lorcana and can see how addictive (and expensive) the hobby of collectable card games is! I keep saying one more box just to get that ultimate card or set.

      Omg I feel so stupid for not checking the back of the card for the name 🫣 but part of me still thinks she looks like a Courtney lol Yeah as I got this game from my FLGS after the campaign the coins weren't an option for me. Having it as an add-on shows the worst parts of KS. Make it all deluxe or all standard, but I really don't want it mixed with quality of components. Thanks heaps for the comment

    I find it’s a balancing act between buying games that I think I’ll really like the theme, game mechanics, etc. and then what I think others will like and be willing to play in my game groups. One big box game that has had a lot of use and replay-ability is Carcassonne Big Box! I find the games that most frequently get to the table are some of the gateway games, because often times there is at least one casual or new game player joining. Also, it can be hard to find enough time for the heavier games. I also try to watch multiple reviews by different reviewers before buying a newly released game as sometimes there is too much hype about it. I think part of that is because reviewers get free copies and probably face some pressure to promote the new game.

    • @BangersProject
      @BangersProject 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      This is 100% accurate. Most reviewers will have gotten at least some (if not most to all) games free over the course of their channel. I also struggled with this balancing act for a long time. I now think I have found my sweet spot where I show off its solo, talk about pros, cons and who the game is for. Take every review as just a portion of your research you should do prior to purchasing any game. Reviews, playthroughs, BGG posts and comments, and Reddit are all great places to get a nice rounded view on each game.

    In the beginning I bought several games only good for 3 players or more. I assumed more people than my son would come to discover how much fun modern boardgames are. Turns out no one wants to play and I wasted a lot of money on games that likely will never get any table time.

    • @jamessherman7797
      @jamessherman7797 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I agree, it can be hard to find players at the right moment. I’m going to try to make more opportunities for solo play as quite a few new board games offer a solo play. For those that don’t, you can probably find a tested solo play variation, online.

    • @BangersProject
      @BangersProject 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah this is big. I am lucky I have 4 different player counts that I can play with depending on the game. Solo, family games up to 5 players, 2 player games just with my partner and then 4-5 player games with my games group. So I am very lucky to have multiple options depending on the type of game. But I too made this mistake when I first started. I got introduced into games from a friend, then went and purchased a whole bunch of games and realised I had no one to play them with. My daughter at the time was too young and this was prior to meeting my beautiful partner and her kids. It was at this time I joined a Facebook page about board games for my city and I put out a request to see if anyone wanted to play with me. I ended up getting 5 people come over and play Parks that weekend. This was nerve wrecking but from that post I stayed in contact with some of them and we created a weekly games group that i still play with to this day. But even if this doesn't happen for you, solo gaming has improved 1000% since covid and most games now offer solid solo experiences. All the best and thanks for the comment 👍

    I think in the base game the dragon is very unbalanced, espacially if compared to the wolf and the fox. The fox damage output is too little, especially if you play in less than 4 people. The wolf skill is instead strong but very gimmicky, and if you happen to be in late game, you probably can't spend 4 health

    I spent, for me, a lot of money on Twilight Imperium. I just love the game concept, I love the idea of a big space exploration wargame. I spent money sleeving the cards. I learnt the rules,, set the game up. Did a couple of solo moves. That got me excited to imagine my mates and I around the table spending hours creating empires. Trouble was they did not have my vision. They do like Sci fi but have lives in the real world and would not commit to a game requiring so much time to play that TI does. So it remains unplayed. I cannot bring myself to sell it as I am still in love with it. It sits on my shelf, a gorgeous looking cardboard ornament. I did plan to buy the expansion but thankfully I didn't. Though there is still a little alien voice in the back of my head saying " Buy me, buy me ........... "

      Haha this is such a great example. I have a mate who owns this and he will get a large group and play it probably once a year. But it's such an endeavour to find a large group all willing to give up nearly a full day to play it. You really need a special type of group for a game like this. I love the idea of it now being a cardboard ornament! Maybe one day the stars will align and I hope you get to play it. In saying that though the couple of times my mate organised it I was conveniently washing my hair that day 😂

So far, played 1.5 times as a 2 player game and I’m really liking it. Also purchased Free Ride, but haven’t played it yet. Per reviews it has some design flaws with the cities hard to locate on the map, but there are workarounds for it. They may also come out with a USA map. Looking forward to giving Free Ride a try! I’ve been eyeing Trains for a few years, but would really prefer trains over cubes and what not. Makes it more abstract and less themed to trains. Thanks for the many ideas from this video!

    After years of learning my golden rule now for Kickstarters, never buy the first campaign or trust reviewers. Wait till it comes, see proper reviews online, or bgg, or play a friends copy. If its good..well there's always a second campaign with expansion! Never fails. They want to capitalize whilst the hype is there. Most kickstarter hype games die and well never rank high bgg. Someone will always sell these lower. Only exception is CMON cause mostly one time only and they rise in value if good cause ton of exclusives. Research the game. Golden rule applies to non Kickstarter. Wait and see. No need to buy into hype. Plenty of games to play on shelf. Its not like games will disappear in 2 games. But yes regrets come from not researching though if its a big game sortof intuitive the setup and game always long. However agree Voidfall.

    • @BangersProject
      @BangersProject 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That is truly great advice. Like it or not (and I'm also guilty of this) previews only talk about the positives. Waiting until the game drops gives you a lot more different and balanced views on the game (positive and negative). I also love reading the BGG comments as well. It took me a while to learn these mistakes and I haven't backed a crowdfunding game for probably about 18 months now. I am now big on supporting my local FLGS and seem to still find all the games including Kickstarters on their shelves. Most of the time the prices are pretty good and often cheaper then if I backed the campaign and paid shipping.
