      Do you grasp the real meaning of a Turn Key Setup? Meaning it comes with all the batteries, control center! You know Forward/Reverse lever gauges panel, batteries, and Oh yeah the Motor! He never stated that is what will happen when you turn the key.

    Thanks for all the views and shares! I thought I’d post to address some of the comments to date.
    This was a test of an early prototype. The purpose was to test various sized heat exchangers for cooling the Tesla motor, but we thought it would be fun to share the experience as a sneak-peek of what we’re working on.
    The trim was not ideal. I’m nautically challenged, however we captured the thermal data we needed just the same.
    I only showed the motor because the rest of the boat isn’t as pretty. Again, this is a prototype on an inexpensive 28’ Tri-toon our local marina had sitting around. Far from an ideal platform for the final product, but was an exceptional value for a test mule to rapidly iterate upon the design.
    Many ask about range and battery size/weight. As with any EV, range is proportional to speed and drag. This particular test was intended to get the motor hot for testing thermal management. We used approximately 61kWh of energy during an hour of mixed high-speed/low-speed testing. The battery for this test was the Model 3 Long Range pack with 74 kWh of capacity weighing about 1050lbs.
    Our product that will be offered in 2021 will debut on a smaller 24’ vessel with much lower drag coefficient, sealed recessed battery compartment, and fully integrated control electronics and infotainment. It will be much easier to advertise specifications for range and performance on the actual product platform once unveiled.
    Thanks so much for watching. Subscribe to see future videos. ;)

      I think you'll find that operating an Electric motor on water is different to driving on land. In a car you accelerate initially to get up to speed than cruise with far less resistance than a boat on water. The electric motors are far superior for torque, max rpm and maintenance, but battery technology isn't there for a marine applications that require decent range.

      Like with Tesla automobiles, I think that making this a reality is much closer than people think. The power performance already is there, and I think that the long term maintenance and NVH will be superior to ICE.

    @dougiebruce 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I wish the developers of electric marine outboards based on Tesla motors much success. There are so many benefits of modern electric propulsion:
    - electric motors are smaller and lighter than gasoline motors of comparable HP, are very quiet, and have no exhaust, and they always start
    - electric propulsion requires no gearbox. The motor runs backwards to reverse, and no mechanical throttle/gearbox linkage is needed
    - electric motors have instant torque and flat torque curves. If anything, they accelerate too fast.
    - electric motors require ZERO maintenance (no lubricants to change, no spark plugs or ignition systems, no filters, no fuel injectors/carburetors, etc.)
    - electric motors last indefinitely
    - there are no fumes that need to be vented- there is no risk of explosion
    - batteries are now lithium ion, with tremendously more energy/weight than older (“golf cart batteries”). They charge faster, and retain up to 80% of their capacity after 10 years of use.
    - cars like Teslas have ranges over 300 mi., and can be 80% recharged in under ½ hour. It should be easy to install boat batteries with the capacity to run as far as gasoline powered boats.
    - electric propulsion costs more up front. But electric fuel costs much less, and maintenance should be almost zero
    - Tesla cars retain higher resale value than comparable gasoline cars
    - imagine never having to drive to a gas dock (or find one that isn’t closed). Just pull into your slip and plug in. Leave the dock every morning with a “full tank”
    Electric power may not immediately replace petroleum fuels for every boating application. Some vessels may need 200 miles of range (or more), and can’t spend a few hours to “re-fuel”. But for a big segment of recreational boaters these are not show-stoppers, and the benefits far outweigh the limitations. When carriages were pulled by horses, people thought gasoline cars were a gimmick. Henry Ford proved them wrong. Now boaters can take the next step.
    Note: Electric motors also emit no “greenhouse gasses”, and there is no risk of fuel spills.

      You'd be surprised. It's got to be much trickier to cool an electric than an internal combustion. You can circulate water throughout an internal combustion without fear of shorting anything out. Plus, internal combustion is able to dissipate heat with its exhaust gases--electrics have nothing going out to carry heat with it.

      @@luxuriousfir I have always wondered why can't they do that on a electric car and just run a smaller type wheel/tire setup to roll on the pavement free wheel, to run a alternator/generator to replace charge as a alternator does. Or solar like you said!

    • @kayzrx8
      @kayzrx8 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wouldn't work . To keep the batteries charged you need a gen or alternator capable of delivering what the electric motor is pulling . At this point you might as well directly drive the prop from the engine. The added weight of the batteries , a generator and another if engine makes no sense financially and weight wise.

      @@rustedratchetgarage6788 It actually does make a difference if it's pushing a 40 foot launch or a 16 foot bass boat. The acceleration is pretty impressive if that's a 40 foot boat. On the other hand the acceleration sucks if it's on a bass boat.

    Now SeaTow and BoatUS are going to have to provision their vessels with charging units! But seriously, I bet a very reliable engine could be created with those Tesla motors. Serious question - what is the battery / engine weight compared to gas and a gas engine?

      He posted a comment after yours, so above this one saying the 3 batteries alone weighed around 1050 pounds! But also said that the test combo made over 350 HP's!!

      I just replaced gas with electric (Epropulsion, 3hp) as the primary motor on a sailboat. The gas motors weigh 35 lbs and run for 45 minutes on a tank. The electric weighs 42 lbs including the battery and runs for an hour and a half at full throttle. Totally different scale but it's pretty reasonable.
