Paul jumps the ship through space, met his doppelganger while in a coma, saved Hugh from the Sporeverse, and is now a father figure to a non-binary person with an invisible boyfriend. If nothing else, Paul has become my top favorite Engineer and among my top five favorite Star Trek Characters of all time.

Edit: Apparently there was a production error, where Stamets was listed as Chief Engineer of the Discovery in his file. He is however, the chief of the Spore Drive division, which is run in Science and Engineering.

This is actually pretty sweet and before y'all get bitchy about Gray being visible to Adira, let's not forget Joran was visible to Ezri when that Vulcan was on some rampage on DS9. We don't know exactly how much a Trill interacts with a Human host as Riker was only host for a few hours.

The trill are my favorite Star Trek alien species, unique, non-judgemental (usually) due to lifetimes of experience, and the embodiment of great science fiction. They are at least somewhat telepathic or empathic, I believe it's just a subtle thing that they don't want to highlight about their nature. They're not evil alien symbionts bent on galactic civilization like most tropes, they're shy and self-conscious about what others think of them, in essence they are very grounded.
Since Discovery started, haters have been crying foul over this Trek being too preachy and pandering to SJWs and yadda yadda yadda, then the writers clap back with, "By the way, the new Non-Binary character now has two gay dads" I have NEVER seen the double bird to the haters being flipped so BEAUTIFULLY!
I think they never really understood that the core of Star Trek was inherently progressive :). It always asked us to see not what was, but imagine what could be if we approached the world with tolerance and kindness.
As a Star Trek fan and as a gay man in his mid thirties, I cannot begin to tell you what this scene means. It is a collision of so many sweet painful parts of having an LGBTQ+ identity, what it means to have an older gay mentor, and how our unique individuality can make it all better.
As a bisexual man in his 30s I can say that while I appreciate the sentiment of this scene I'm not a big fan of them introducing an even more marginalised character who just so happens to be even more special than the previously most marginalised one.
This is what Star Trek stands for. Integrating the oppressed. It started with Nichelle Nicols as Uhura. These days we have an openly gay couple taking care of a non-binary person. Let's keep in mind, many red states are passing ridiculous legislation to hinder trans people. Star Trek is setting an example against that lunacy. I would say that is exactly what Roddenberry stand for. Well done.
I love their interactions, the Trill by nature are non-binary and having a non-binary human as a host fits them perfectly. They've represented LGBTQ+ community for almost 40 years now from TNG "The Host" to now, so I don't think it's that absurd to see such interactions. Adira's character may be young and smart, but they are not annoying like other young adults in Trek, i.e. Will Wheaton/Wesley. I'm happy with the character and Paul's interaction with them is a good move.
For the life of Spock... I don't understand why Star Trek fans shut themselves off to so much good content simply out of spite for what they refuse to understand about human nature.
literally the only character in all of star trek who could say, "I redesigned the spore drive..." Adira Tal will always be my favorite. Always. They are 100% pure star trek.
I love this scene. It so quintessential Star Trek but it also speaks to me as a mental health nurse and I love the acknowledgement that our experiences are our own and they are real.
Having seen the evolution of Paul's and Hugh's relationship through the lens of life, death and spores, you a really see Stamets' trajectory of growth by this encounter. He would have been a jerk to Adira had they met in Season 1.

As for why they hadn't told anyone before when the 23rd century is almost definitely accepting and the 32nd must be, it could've just been fear about their identity in general from the memory loss after the joining, which is why they only came out after finally accessing Tal's memories and being more certain in their identity
It's the 32nd century in a VERY technological civilization and people still have faith and spirituality. I'm surprised such a tech savvy girl would use the word Soul instead of Consciousness when describing her dead boyfriend.

Listen to Star Trek: The Pod Directive, episode 2 with Reza Aslan. It draws wonderful connections about the concept of spirituality in a technologically advanced future.
Soul, as a concept, gets appropriated by the religious an awful lot. I'm an athiest and a determinist. I also have experience my 'soul' in moments of true joy, happiness and pain. That we have a soul isn't in doubt, only what it is. It's part of but not our consciousness. It's some component part of our psyche that gives emotional feedback to our ongoing experiences. It's... well we all know WHAT it is. Describing it is the problem. Understanding where it sits in the brain (metaphorically) and why it manifests is a question that is primarily used to begin arguements or migraines.
Souls absolutely exist in the universe of Star Trek. The Vulcan katras for example. And the fact that the transporter works and is not a murder machine. XD

oddly enough neither of those is correct (presumably). It's "them." Though to be fair I don't think their exact gender has been revealed. Whether they're genderfluid, bigender, or agender etc. So "her/him" as a double could be accurate I suppose, depending.
