I know this will sound cheesy, but the LC 475 was my very first own personal computer and I spent years using it and playing on it. I still remember the day I came home to find my dad setting it up in my room, how incredibly futuristic it looked, the starting chime, how it smelled, my dad's face while figuring out and talking to him about how cool it was. I was 9 years old and it broke a few years later but a lot of what I know about computers came from that machine. You guys made me remember alot of happy moments about me and my dad of that time. Hoping someone from the team reads this, thank you Linus and all the team so much.

I recently got a Macintosh LC III so nice timing! You can upgrade the vram in these. At least in the LC series machines like that one. I put in a 256KB stick in mine and can go to thousands of colors mode in 640x480 mode (equivalent to 16 bit I think). Someone recently made custom vram modules that go as high as 512Kb so I could even go to 24bit at 640x480. 16 bit if you wanted to go 800x600.
As for the IIsi the PSU can be repaired (a lot cheaper then replacing it lol. You just need to get the right capacitors and someone decent with a soldering iron). Not sure why you can't just have someone replace the capacitors in it. That's likely what went wrong with that one. Machines this old all need new capacitors. My LC III's psu was still in good condition but I replaced the caps on it anyways. The logic board needs a capacitor replacement. They are known to leak and 99% of all the machines out there now have some capacitor leakage. Mine was in the minor side and isn't impacting it's functionality yet but I still plan to have someone recap it. (logic board uses SMD caps so I don't want to mess with that myself. The PSU were through holes and are easy for me to work on with the cheap soldering iron I have).
That Macintosh II probably needs a recap on the logic board too. Good chances it might have had issues even if the PSU's caps didn't blow up on it. :P

A few notes: the PDS slot network cards of that era do support full duplex, and can talk to a 10/100 switch just fine. Modern gigabit switches will not autonegotiate down to 10mbit speeds though, so you need an intermediate 10/100 switch. -- Good news, your local MicroCenter still carries 10/100 switches from multiple brands (not even joking). The reason you likely had to use half duplex is because you were not using a crossover ethernet cable. Modern network cards are capable of autonegotiating crossover as well as link speed, classic cards of the era could not.
There is another option for video capture that could be better and cheaper than involving the OSSC and a separate capture card, DataPath VisionRGB cards are cheap on ebay, and take VGA or DVI input, and can grab just about any video signal fed to them. Even 700x400 and other classic text mode video resolutions.

If you still have Deadmau5' number, send him an Atari. The Atari ST line was THE computer for making music back in that time. But first just for MIDI sequencing. I think for sampling you needed the Atari Mega STE. But for Chiptunes you also had a three voice/oscillator Yamaha sound chip on the other models. I think my Atari STFM 1040 also has it, but it's missing the audio out. So I think I have to solder an output to the speaker.
The Software everybody used, just like Photoshop, is a software a lot of people still use today: Cubase.
I'm currently planning my own music related Atari project, not really using Cubase though, so I'm interested what he would do with it.

Heh, I had a LC 475 for my second half of college. It was using Photoshop 3.0 though which didn't have more performance, but did have layers. But I'm pretty sure there's a reason early quicktime files were postage stamp sizes. 176x144 or smaller. Heck, the videos used in Myst are examples of that. Full screen still images, then postage stamp videos super imposed atop. Though I do recall my perfomance in Marathon being better then that, though probably also with a smaller resolution choice.
I wonder if instead of multiple layers with Photoshop, you could work with a pair of files open and thus use one for source and painting on the other. It's certainly not like there were many other raster image tools for the time. And I bet a little masking and that clone tool did a lot of work.
