      Either the troops knew the L3 product was trash and never used it or they never bothered to open the box because no matter how cool the gear is, no soldier wants to be the slow camel wearing glasses while humping all that heavy gear all over Timbuktu. Once you see a tacti-cool ninja using flat range holds in a gunfight, you can really understand General Petraeus' mindset. Teaching kids is like herding cats

    Heyo, I feel like you missed a YUGE point about the cost differential, that being: if a company sells a product to the US government, it has to be priced the same as it would be for an individual citizen, “off the shelf”. By marking the prices high, L3 ensures they’ll recoup their engineering and certification costs, while also guaranteeing they’ll get a premium price tag that “somebody” (taxpayers) will buy regardless of the actual cost and profit margin.

      I think the gun and "tactical" space has a massive problem with this. Once they get a government contract at a wildly inflated price they don't have to care about competing on the market.

    • @touge242
      @touge242 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +19

      This right here. L3 does not care about private joe sales, they chase government contract and they are not allowed to mark up contract prices. This means private citizens are free to pay bribed contract prices

    L3 is definitely brighter, but to its detriment really washing out targets without any photonic barriers. The Somogear seems underpowered and not narrow. The Invisible Sight is super clean and just right powered to not wash out details. Not accounting for sturdiness and longevity, the Invisible Sight is the very clear winner to my eyes.

    The high cost of the L3 and others is greed, they have government contracts and over charge the government for these products and so we as a citizen want the same gear as the military we also have to pay high price point. Also the government bureaucrats that sign off on these contracts are part of the problem. These contracts could be negotiated but they don’t and it cost us the taxpayers.

      Not really, a lot of it goes to testing and certification- certifications that the Chinese don’t have to go through, nor the pay between American labor and forced labor.
      And that has to include all design, lawyers, tooling and assembly line. And that’s just what you know of. There’s also destructive testing for every lot built.
      The company could have spent 5 yrs perfecting the design in order for it to pass the mil-spec requirements.
      Where the Chinese just buy one, backwards engineer and they have a product within 6 months, no testing, no lawyers … just copy and paste. And of course there’s profit, where the Chinese don’t care as much as they have less to lose.
      Can a business make a a $3500 part and sell for $500 to be competitive? Wait till you are in business and you have to front all the risks, pay & benefits, rent etc.

    I haven't watched all the way yet, so you may cover this; L3 has a spotty at best track record for quality with their lasers. Guts pulling out when removing the plug, etc. Since you have to go "gray market" when buying a full power L3, you will have *ZERO* warranty or support. And if you send it in to them, they will confiscate it. Generally speaking, their civilian offerings suck and cost well into the $1k-2k+ category. These big .gov contract companies give zero effs about the regular consumer, and the government regulating things further ruins things.

  • @Nebsgame
    @Nebsgame 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    It’s nice that companies are making good clones of these laser units it’s absurd that we as civilians have to pay 2000$+ for the neutered version of them if we don’t have Leo credentials, they only cost that much for the real ones because it’s literally illegal for companies to sell it cheaper to regular customers. 400$ is a bargain for use under night vision and makes it more affordable for people to get into

    You can really see the difference in the spot light of the L3 where the diffuser gives you a more faded light concentration in the outer area that gives you a better depth of field than the cheaper clones. That depth of field is really important in gauging distances at night, but in all actuality we never used the infrared illuminators when I was in the infantry because it’s poor light discipline that’ll get you noticed by an enemy combatant using their own NVG.

But I did not know that you can see the beams with an other scope, because like this if you use these on the battle field basically you would expose yourself to the enemy, so projecting these IR beams from high using a combat drone (not a DJi) would be advisable I think.

    L3, Boeing, lockheed, etc..are the major players in the government military contract arena. You are correct the unit cost of $4k is overpriced and the material, workmanship, other costs must meet milspec requirements does not justify the pricetag. $400-$600 is likely the true cost of the L3 unit. Just because a manufacture must meet a specific mil standard doesnot mean the cost per unit should increase. Everyone knows that government contracts are intenionally overpriced due to lack of bidders, no bid opportunities afforded to select companies, and lack of competition.

      I kept the gain on the PVS 14 the same so as to be fair, you could turn it down and get less washout. Based on the metered numbers the L3 has a stronger output so at the same gain level it would make sense it looks more washed out comparatively.

      2 of the 3 functions are on the IR spectrum, so yes you’d need night vision to use it. Wouldn’t be worth the money for using it as a visible laser.
      Budget and NV don’t really go in a sentence together.. there are digital options, or you can score second hand PVS 14’s for around $2k but most people don’t consider that “budget” dollar amounts. Keep in mind, it’s common to drop $10k on a set of high spec NV binos

    I’m not to sure what your goal is here, but I assume it is to better enable civilian and retired military & LEO to make aa informed decision on which to buy?
    However, as soon as you use acronyms without explaining what they refer to you lost the interest of most of your civilian potential interest and buyers.
    Obviously the cheaper, more clear NVS (night vision site), with good durability, and accuracy is the best choice!
    The more expensive NVS is 9 times the price and it is not that clear (so therefore target identification would be questionable) and for normal every time use reliability battery life is very important to the civilian shooter especially if they are using the targeting system for CQB(close quarters battle) applications defending against home intruders. So longevity of the battery life (in constant use(military) and periodic use (civilian & LEO) is a major concern for each unit you are testing.
    Military spec equipment generally good but very expensive, generally very reliable, but civilian equipment is just as good for far less price.
