My wife and I just got the Tucson Hybrid ultimate and this past weekend we drove 225 kilometers on a scenic road at 60 to 90 kilometers per hour speeds and finished that trip with an average of 4.9 liters per 100 kilometers. By the way Jack thanks for bringing the better half of your couple the gorgeous and very smart Andrea !
Finally another Motormouth video. It's been a whole 24 hours. I think I'm addicted! I'm 100% with Zack, I like me some buttons. I'll have to see if there is any difference between the Santa Fe Calligraphy and Hybrid in the States when a dealership has both. Watch, next year the Tuscon will have a volume button, just to spite us lol. You guys are the best car channel on TH-cam.
Nice comparison! We chose the Tucson limited hybrid (will take delivery in 2 days), and we're 60+ yrs old :) Didn't need a bit more room and chrome hasn't been cool for 30+ years, that's why so many car makers have special "black pkgs" that cost a premium. Tuscon hybrid w/ the quicker performance and better economy made it an easy decision, and much less chrome to delete :) Just wish the 19" Tucson wheels weren't so ugly & busy, so those are the first things we'll change.
Great review. Any idea why Kia/Hyundai now have the rear indicator lights along the bumper and not alongside the rear brake lights? From an aesthetic and practical point of view, I think it's terrible.
Yeah I agree with you, that little mishap of a design of turning indicator lights deters me from getting the new Santa Fe. I'll wait a couple years for the next gen design.
Dec. 2021 i bought a Tucson hybrid for less than 34 thousand us. Incredible bargain. some short comings: complicated electronic functions, no spare tire, not so good over bumps. But numerous features such as all wheel drive, sun roof, etc. etc.
Oh just had to add. Have you seen the Tuscon N line photos ? It's gorgeous! Imagine the comparison videos next year with all the plug-ins, hybrid, gas and N line variations on the Tuscon and the Santa FE and then the new Kias.. *head explosion*.
There's spy shots of a Hyundai Tucson N being tested with the 2.5t engine with adjustable suspension in Germany. Over in Europe, the Tucson N-Line comes with the 1.6t mild hybrid with adjustable suspension. NA market got the short end of the stick for that trim.
Here in the states, I've been leaning towards the Santa Fe, but with increasing prices and the games that dealerships play to drain your bank account, I'm leaning more towards the Tuscon. Only problem is that the center console uses the piano black surface touch buttons, which are a fingerprint magnet. Also, I prefer tactile buttons that I can feel while I'm trying to keep my attention on the road.
I thought I saw this review yesterday -- but I could be wrong. I think it makes the Tucson more and more intriguing to me, a gen X-er who is looking for the cargo space for going fishing. Does the Tucson hybrid have the cool gauges that show the blind spots in the gauges when you signal?
Don’t feel bad Andrea and Zach! In the US, models like the RDX A-Spec do not come with rain sensing wipers or power folding mirrors like you guys get! Another example is the Honda CRV. In Canada you guys can get the panoramic sunroof, we just get the regular sunroof, and I think you guys get heated rear seats on the CRV which we don’t get here in the US!🤷♀️
Still 50/50 on this one. Toyota is known for reliability, but its expensive with less bells and whistles. Hyundai however looks nice inside and out, but the 1.6L turbo hybrid makes me skeptical with longterm reliability. Anyways, very nice comparison between both cars. Definitely one of the best Canadian car channel out there!
I just traded-in my 2018 Tucson with a 1.6L Turbo engine for a 2023 Tucson Hybrid (with a 1.6L Turbo engine)... in the nearly 5 years I had the 2018 Tucson, the 1.6L Turbo never once gave me the slightest problem. I have all the confidence that my new 1.6L Turbo in my Hybrid will be just fine.
i have already Hyundai Santa Fe PHEV Luxury Pack Plug-In Hybrid AWD 265 Hk with Metallic lakk/7 seaters & it´s Phantom Black color here in Norway . best Hybrid ever . SO COOL & SUPER AMAZING to drive . i love my new car
Hey guys thanks for this great review! We are in the Las Vegas area and were able to find a 2022 Santa Fe Calligraphy AWD. We just had to agree with Andrea, it is a good value for a near luxury class vehicle. We live in a large retirement community full of Buicks, Mercs, and Cads, and like many others wanted a good comfortable road car with all of the technology. Our Santa Fe Calligraphy (all black with tan interior) fits right in and cost thousands less 👍
Hello from Colorado - I really enjoy your back and forth style of car reviews. The new Tucson is a really sharp looking vehicle. I'm considering the plug-in Hybrid version as my next purchase.
Awesome review and a few good laughs about confusion between Canada and USA packages and between gas and hybrid. Also I had a good laughs about Zack moving his hands so much that remind me of my deaf do that. Perhaps Zack should learn sign language. 😆
Thanks for the comparison Andrea and Zach! I also find the difference in trim features very confusing. I was going to get the hybrid Santa Fe but I'm not getting the same features of the Calligraphy trim... plus I am not a fan of the chrome trim; I prefer the black diamond trim on the Calligraphy. I can wait until next year to purchase so hopefully the 2023 Santa Fe hybrid will have the features I want. If not, I'm getting the hybrid Tucson (Hyundai, just add a few buttons/dial).
Nice comparison review. Where were all these hybrids in 2019 when I chose the Rav4?!? My wife told me to wait but I was too excited about a hybrid in this class. Thanks!
Not a huge fan of the chrome on the Santa Fe. I have really started to dislike chrome unless it’s a smoked or darker chrome. I wish the Santa Fe had this as an option. I’m with Zack, I prefer the looks of the Tucson. Sorry Andrea :) Thanks for this video! Greetings from BC
Still don’t understand how is there more cargo space on Tucson? SantaFe has more leg room front and back, the back seat can move forward as well. Is the Tucson taller and the extra volume comes from height?
Hello, Did you notice if the Tucson stayed in ELECTRIC mode for the first 30 miles? I hear that the Santa Fe PHEV rarely stayed in electric mode and behaved more like a standard hybrid car where the internal combustion engine would kick in very often. I enjoyed watching your review.
Seems obvious that Hyundai does not want Canadians to buy the hybrid versions. They just lost my interest in their cars. Thank you guys for the useful info. I'll be looking at other manufactures to spend my money on.
I'm a Gen-X and I like the Tuscon better. You mentioned the official gas mileage. But what has been your real-world gas mileage with these two hybrid cars?
You are right, it's definitely lacking colours on the Hybrid model. It's even worse in the US, you can't get a bright colour at all on the Hybrids. There is one available in Canada.
I don't know why Hyundai doesn't share more parts between models. Just yesterday, I sat in a Santa Fe top trim, and the seats were amazing. Plush and supportive. I then sat in the Tucson top trim, and the seats were as hard as a rock, my lumbar was starting to panic after 5 minutes! Both seats are "leather" so why not just use the good seats in the Tucson? It's too bad because the Santa Fe is just too big for our city lifestyle, but I'm not sure I'd be happy with the Tucson's noticeably worse interior (not just the seats, more and cheaper plastics... turn signal arm feels like it's so think, it's going to snap off any minute).
I'm sorry... The top ultimate package for the Tucson is missing the wireless Android auto???? That's so backwards... Does anyone think this is a software limitation that can be updated in the future or is it a hardware limitation
Why don't you get the larger infotainment screen in the hybrid Santa Fe? The answer is simple. You Canadians get the hybrid with AWD, a feature that isn't available in the US for the hybrid model. I wouldn't defend the specific differences in trims and options between the US and Canada but all automakers design their models to reflect the relative appeal in different national markets and to meet price points that reflect the impact of rivals in those markets. For obvious climatic reasons AWD is far more popular in Canada than in the US and decisions by automakers reflect that fact for Canadian models. But providing AWD on the hybrid Santa Fe in Canada means cost cutting somewhere else.
Of these two, the Tucson interior is a dealbreaker...it manages to be both ugly and impractical. It’d have to be the Santa Fe. Objectively though, these Hyundais get pretty meh MPGs compared to a Venza for example. It’s not a really a contest. Toyota’s hybrid system is long proven reliable; who knows how well this Hyundai dual clutch and turbo DI engine are going to last.
Actually the Santa Fe the infotainment center area look just the same as the other model. I would say it's getting boring👎🤣 also, I want to say why the Hyundai makes North America has different package between US and Canada it's so stupid 👎
"Mild Hybrids" Low voltage. Wimpy compared to other hybrid vehicles which have many times more electrical power. If you want a hybrid SUV, a Toyota is the best choice.
They compared the full hybrid versions of both Hyundai’s. There are plenty comparisons online with RAV4 vs Tucson and they all counter your prejudiced opinion.

Congrats, what MPG are you getting?
We love our new Santa Fe Hybrid Blue package. A solid build and so comfortable. We have had it for 4 weeks now.

The comparison videos are going to be awesome, can't wait to drive the PHEV's and I'm dying to know what the EV range is going to be.
Tucson N line comes with the crappy 2.5L gas engine. No hybrid option.

Agree - love the Tucson outside and Sante Fe inside. We drove both this weekend and went with the Tucson Hybrid in the end. Might have it by Xmas
Great comparison guys. Really liked it.
Also, it seems the Tuscon is the practical choice to go.
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it.

Yeap, you gotta get top trim for that.

No problem at all, to each their own, right. I typically don't love chrome either but there's something about this Santa Fe that I love.
Have you seen the Santa Fe XRT?
Are there memory seats in the Limited Hybrid Santa Fe in the USA?
This is a much anticipated review. I'm wondering how the hybrid performs on a bigger and heavier Santa Fe vs. Tucson.
I wish Hyundai would similar gadgets and buttons in Tucson Models too .
can the Tucson hybrid 2022 fit a useable size spare tire in the tire well
Driver space is the most important for me. I will try them both.
Still don’t understand how is there more cargo space on Tucson? SantaFe has more leg room front and back, the back seat can move forward as well. Is the Tucson taller and the extra volume comes from height?

Tuscon looks better, and the idea of less weight with the same power is appealing.
You can feel the difference.
I liked both of them but went with the Toyota Venza instead. Better gas mileage and Toyota hybrid dependability.
The extra battery in the Tucson hybrid knocked out the full size spare tire option.
I'm a Gen-X and I like the Tuscon better. You mentioned the official gas mileage. But what has been your real-world gas mileage with these two hybrid cars?
why these two always have review only on premium?
Does the u.s. Tucson have a spare tire
I just reserved ($500) the Santa Cruz. Meanwhile thanks for these reviews.
The Santa Cruz looks great. Looking forward to reviewing it.
I wish the Santa Fe Hybrid was available in more colours, like the gas version.

Especially true here in the US on the Tucson!

I'd buy that Tucson if it had a HUD.
I have a HUD in my CR-V and I've never used it operatively... just for showing-off.
Talk about the difference between each hybrid
Volume knob? Why? you have volume control on the steering wheel! Not a deal breaker for me.
rear blinkers low in the bumper are soooo wrong !!!!!
Need this comparison for 2025
Hyundai in the 70s 80s 90s in the 2000s using mitsubishi engines and gears Hyundai and Kia using GDI mitsubishi old engines in the new models nowadays
Tucson for the win.
