Yes, I do remember Elmyra and in fact I’ve always wondered why that “cute aggression” happens. Every time I pet my cat I clench my teeth because I can’t handle how cute she is!!!
One of the theories I heard (from a PsyShow Psych video) is that cute aggression is a way for your brain to try to calm yourself down. Basically when you find something so cute you can't stand it, your brain goes "Okay buddy you need to chill out by... wanting to squeeze it." Basically just a weird quirk in our brains that was probably a lot more useful when we were hunter/gatherers, but in modern times kinda makes us go "WTH is wrong with me!"
Ahh, I grew up eating siopao. only found out recently its just a filipino take on chinese bao (cha siu bao). they look identical except siopao is a bit bigger and breadier and the filling is probably 98% meat... with the occasional egg lol. besides bakeries you can buy them at literal gas stations and mini marts. p.s. where i live now the term for that cute squeezing feeling is "magodai"

There's really no difference. It's just called a different name there. Within the country of origin you can find several variations. Even the bigger size, being mostly meat and having egg in it also exist there. I've actually seen some versions the size of a standard steamer.

We actually have a word for that “cute aggression” feeling in the Chamoru language! It’s “magoddai” or “ma’godai” ( muh-goh-dī ). Mostly used when talking about babies or animals. “Your baby is so cute. She’s making me magoddai.”
I love what I saw as a play on words for that short. 包子 (baozi) or shortened "bao" is obviously the name of the food in the short. However, I just sat there thinking "Her 包 (bao) is her little 宝宝 (baobao)" with "baobao" being "baby". Then when it turned out to be her son it just made the whole thing so much sweeter. Also, I love making bao at home. However I make taco baos which is not traditional at all. If something can be eaten as a sandwich, with a tortilla, or paired with a dinner roll I'll try to stuff it in the bao and see how it goes.
These look incredible! We went to see the Incredibles 2 right after I told my husband we are pregnant with our first baby. I looked over during the bao short film to see tears streaming down his face. ❤️ That short and this food will always hold a special place in my heart because of that!

Also I think I may do a couple different flavors like a Taco Bao, cheeseburger Bao, Ramen & beef Bao.... UPDATE: I make these frequently, I have done a breakfast one, a few different southwestern inspired.. They are a favorite here. I suggest going for the name brand Grands over store brand, the taste and texture is Far superior, but both are delicious. I bake mine only because I have no way to steam them now, but my husband Loves taking these to work the next day, and 1 tube of biscuits is Not enough for 2 people, I suggest a tube per adult person because they are that good. The best part is you can stuff it with ANYTHING, Just be careful with the liquid content, I have had bao butts bust and spill juices 🙄. It did happen less with the name brand biscuits, but the more liquid created during cooking the higher likelihood of them having a blow out, also try to leave the bottom a bit thicker, I think out the edges kinda like hand tossing pizza then put my filling in the middle then close it.
it’s weird to think this is two years ago,I’m proud of how far you have come I remember watching one of your videos with my mom and we all started laughing when u did something funny I think it was when u made a cheesecake I’m happy that u made my mom laugh I love u and I’m proud of how far you’ve come
I love these. Excellent lesson once again Emmy! The Bao I usually make is a little different. I steam the Bao bun then add meats that were cooked separately. Lessons from School of Wok. Both are supper tasty and now I have learned how to ‘pleat’ my Bao. Cheers
I made them! I’ve never tried making dumplings before so they were a little work-intensive but worth it. Recipe works great. The only thing I’ll do differently next time is press/drain some of the moisture out of the cabbage/carrots/ginger after you’ve prepped them, as the filling is otherwise a little wet and makes forming the buns somewhat harder. Thanks Emmy for an amazing video!
I just made them tonight. I thought they were horribly flavorless. I was so disappointed. 😔 unfortunately I used the wrong sesame oil, not the flavorful kind so that contributed. Yours weren't like that?
@@MeganRichardsXD They were definitely not the strongest flavor (agree that the sesame oil may have affected it), but upping the salt and pepper to taste seemed to help. I do think some more aromatics and/or spices would help the flavor profile somewhat. I froze a bunch of them after steaming, and they’ve re-steamed very well.
@@Trent_Miller_MD yes. If I make them again I'd add more of the flavorful stuff for sure. Hard to taste test when its raw pork 😂 crazy enough I think the microwave did a great job of reheating. Mine were a little sticky and the microwave actually helped make them a little fluffier

I made this recipe! There’s flour all over the kitchen, the bao are not all beautiful (so I eat the ugly ones first) but they are delicious. I am blessed to have a steam oven here and it worked exactly as a dumpling basket. Success! (Next time, I’ll try to do the dough a bit thinner. Eventually, I’ll get the hang of it).
EMMY! YOU DID SO GOOD AT PLEATING THE BAOS! The only thing is... you went one step too far and sealed that little vent that many baos have. It's a sign that you did a really good job at making them!
This is what I remember receiving during Chinese New Years from our Neighbors as a child growing up in Los Angeles. !! The Elderly Grandmother would bring us a huge Plate every year . Also something wrapped in Corn Husks ? As a Child , I even spoke and counted a bit in Chinese. Great memories and The Food was amazing !
You should just request them from the restaurant. It would be a simple matter for them to buy them frozen and steam them up if they weren't willing to do so themselves. Better yet, head to the Asian markets and buy the frozen ones yourself.
I tried the recipe a while back. A little tip, add a little more salt in the stuffing, it was a bit bland, I’d say maybe a teaspoon more salt and add some sugar to the dough cause it tastes so good with the filling.
samuel dooley keeps it the filling from tightening up as much when it cooks. The cooked meat interrupts the strands of protein so it doesn’t turn into a dense meatball.
I was told by the person that taught me these that it imparts moisture and fat from the uncooked pork into the veg and the dough. And prevents overcooking ?
There was an Asian market in my hometown called Sunrise. They made fresh bao everyday. And they took my food stamps! I loved the chicken mostly, but would sometimes also get bbq pork. Yum!!! Only 99 cents each! 2 or 3 of those paired with a coconut water and i was in heaven. Thanks for reminding me of this, emmy!
You sounded like one of the munchkins from Oz! Lol. Why do they cook only half the pork? Is it a texture thing? Thankyou for this. I remember the vid you did with the ones filled with bean paste-which I really want to try. I love beans-legumes. Thats a big part of meatless protein.😍🍚I'll love them and hug them and hold them forever! I adore your infectious enthusiasm Emmy. Lovely!😎
I was thinking if you cook half, you can drain half the grease. So when the bao is cooked it will only have enough juiciness to not be really soaked/fall apart. Not sure though!
This was fun to make and your instructions were great. I used my vitamin for the mincing which was very easy and worked well. I also used a veggie double boiler since I didn’t have the baskets. This worked well, but meant I had to cook in several batches. My eleven year old helped me and we had fun with it. When I showed him the video, he said “oh, I like her videos!” So, you have a young fan in my house.
If you were to cook all of it raw a lot of the juices/fat oils would fill the middle of the bun and make the bottoms pretty goopy or just super mushy and all the filling could fall out. It’s not a sure thing since it just kind of depends on the fat content of the pork you bought. But anyways.. When you cook just a portion of it and mix it into the raw- during the cooking process the cooked pork takes on the moisture from the juices of the raw :)
We made bao a couple weeks ago. The instructions said hold your thumb in one place, but I couldn’t understand how to do it. Thank you for making it easy to understand. I can’t wait to try it again.
not u talking bout how ppl always make it look so easy in the videos as u proceed to MAKE IT LOOK SO EASY IN THE VIDEO...smfh hahaha i also appreciate you talking to the bao, thats the way! God Bless!

I definitely recommend tryin/recreating the cheeseburger pods tho! :)

So how'd it work?
I'm also curious as to how these turned out.
Did you make them ? 🧐
I just bought a bamboo steamer, best investment I ever made.
it’s weird to think this is two years ago,I’m proud of how far you have come I remember watching one of your videos with my mom and we all started laughing when u did something funny I think it was when u made a cheesecake I’m happy that u made my mom laugh I love u and I’m proud of how far you’ve come
I Remember Elvira from Tiny Toons! "I'm gonna Love him and hug him and squeeze him until his eyes pop out!" LOL
I love these. Excellent lesson once again Emmy! The Bao I usually make is a little different. I steam the Bao bun then add meats that were cooked separately. Lessons from School of Wok. Both are supper tasty and now I have learned how to ‘pleat’ my Bao. Cheers
"You go play with your brother, OK?" Awww!
There's a word in Tagalog for the cute aggression you were describing: "gigil"
How is that pronounced? Hard g’s or soft g’s or one of each? It’s a really descriptive word.
Barb Hayes it's pronounced gee-geel, with the g pronounced like the g in girl
Barb Hayes both are hard g’s :)
Awesome!
It even sounds like a cute word!
Emmy I love your videos and your appreciation for food I own a small restaurant and love when people get excited by food I see that in you and it makes me smile. Keep up the great vids. Thanks
"I'll love them, and hug them, and hold them forever."
You make everything so fun and enjoyable to watch with your energy and great smile .... Im glad you did this because I am thinking about making a vegan version with spelt floor and bunch of different mushrooms
5:01 is that your Pixar voice? LMAO!!! Too cute!!!
I've had the saddest roughest two weeks, this video cured everything ❤❤❤
EMMY! YOU DID SO GOOD AT PLEATING THE BAOS! The only thing is... you went one step too far and sealed that little vent that many baos have. It's a sign that you did a really good job at making them!
“You go be friends with your brother right thewwrr” I DIED 😂😂
This is what I remember receiving during Chinese New Years from our Neighbors as a child growing up in Los Angeles. !! The Elderly Grandmother would bring us a huge Plate every year . Also something wrapped in Corn Husks ? As a Child , I even spoke and counted a bit in Chinese. Great memories and The Food was amazing !
I wish the local Chinese restaurant had some of those there and I would be eating them all the time.
You should just request them from the restaurant. It would be a simple matter for them to buy them frozen and steam them up if they weren't willing to do so themselves. Better yet, head to the Asian markets and buy the frozen ones yourself.
Eat or adopt as your surrogate child was the last step in the original recipe🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣i almost passed out laughing when I read that
i did not expect that nose to be so realistic xD
I tried the recipe a while back. A little tip, add a little more salt in the stuffing, it was a bit bland, I’d say maybe a teaspoon more salt and add some sugar to the dough cause it tastes so good with the filling.
Why 50 50 cooked and raw pork in the stuffing?
samuel dooley keeps it the filling from tightening up as much when it cooks. The cooked meat interrupts the strands of protein so it doesn’t turn into a dense meatball.
Anna Breon wow!
My hunch is to ensure the stuffing gets fully cooked without over steaming the exterior. 🤔
I was told by the person that taught me these that it imparts moisture and fat from the uncooked pork into the veg and the dough. And prevents overcooking ?
Texture and preserving the outside
There was an Asian market in my hometown called Sunrise. They made fresh bao everyday. And they took my food stamps! I loved the chicken mostly, but would sometimes also get bbq pork. Yum!!! Only 99 cents each! 2 or 3 of those paired with a coconut water and i was in heaven. Thanks for reminding me of this, emmy!
I’ll love them, and hug them, and hold them forever 😭❤️
Bao was such a cute Pixar short about the fine lines between motherly love, and being an overbearing parent...or "overBAOing" lol. So cute!
You sound like Mrs Swan from Mad TV when you talk to the dumplings! 😂
I love how I never see hate comments on emmys videos. Her channel is fully filled with love and positivity!!!
Lovely!😎
Laura Metheny might be half cooked to ensure full cooking. If it was all raw, I would be worried the whole thing wouldn't cook fully
I also wondered that. If it’s to ensure full doneness why not just cook all the pork?
Victoria Hauck because that'll make the filling hard and not juicy.
I was thinking if you cook half, you can drain half the grease. So when the bao is cooked it will only have enough juiciness to not be really soaked/fall apart. Not sure though!
KrisCricket yes! That is exactly why. Less grease, different texture.
You are possibly the most soothing and cute upbeat personality I have seen. Its so awesome
I remember that cartoon “hehe I’m going to love him and pet him forever”
This was fun to make and your instructions were great. I used my vitamin for the mincing which was very easy and worked well. I also used a veggie double boiler since I didn’t have the baskets. This worked well, but meant I had to cook in several batches. My eleven year old helped me and we had fun with it. When I showed him the video, he said “oh, I like her videos!” So, you have a young fan in my house.
Oh my God, she’s so weird in the best way. I died when she talked to the bao.
you talking to your bao is so relatable they are sooo cute
what's the reason for cooking only half of the pork? just curious.
likeasunburn I don't get that either
If you were to cook all of it raw a lot of the juices/fat oils would fill the middle of the bun and make the bottoms pretty goopy or just super mushy and all the filling could fall out. It’s not a sure thing since it just kind of depends on the fat content of the pork you bought. But anyways.. When you cook just a portion of it and mix it into the raw- during the cooking process the cooked pork takes on the moisture from the juices of the raw :)
Shayne Carter
Thank you, Shayne! 😊
That makes sense, thank you.
We made bao a couple weeks ago. The instructions said hold your thumb in one place, but I couldn’t understand how to do it. Thank you for making it easy to understand. I can’t wait to try it again.
So THAT's what a shaved Tribble looks like... :P
twocvbloke 😂
not u talking bout how ppl always make it look so easy in the videos as u proceed to MAKE IT LOOK SO EASY IN THE VIDEO...smfh hahaha i also appreciate you talking to the bao, thats the way! God Bless!
The look of these reminds me of cheeseburger pods that I had gotten to try at Disneys animal kingdom this Saturday...they were so cool! The inside tasted exactly like a double cheeseburger from McDonald's! It was so strange, also there was curry pods as well but i didn't try those. I definitely recommend tryin/recreating the cheeseburger pods tho! :)
Shes so cute explaining things and talking to the bao omg
It sounds delicious!
Marjorie Donnett it does
Great video! What a brilliant idea to make a ring of dough so as to avoid the tapering ends! I found this tip so insightful and helpful. Thank you so much!
This was so soothing until you mention Omyra from Tiny Tunes ha. 80's and 90's had the best cartoons!! Lol
1. Love your channel.
2. Found this recipe on Binging With Babish last year before discovering your channel and it's delicious!
3. I absolutely remember Elmyra!!
It would be so funny if one came alive just like in the movie Bao lol
Emmy you look so happy making these! made me smile lol
I can get these for $1.50 with pork and cabbage etc.
Paul Williams I am in an area that can't find these within 100 miles, so this is really cool and helpful to me.
Rickey Bedell yes it's a great video I wasn't criticizing her I was just saying that they are cheap to buy. ☺
I get that, but where I live you have to make them. We don't have any place near us that makes them.
I was not trying to offend! 😊
In our area it’s 50 cents, but apart from being steamed, the bottoms are sear-fried! :D
She cracks me up. My kids and I were laughing so hard watching this, but we can't stop watching her videos. She is great!
