Dear Lovelies, Thank you for bringing to my attention my unconscious use of "The Ukraine". I've since learned that since its 1991 independence, Ukraine has requested to the world to be called simply "Ukraine". I love nothing more than learning something new, so thanks for teaching me and my apologies if I offended any Ukrainian lovelies.
I lived in Lviv, Ukraine for 7 months as a volunteer, back in 2012 - 2013. When I moved there I wasn't expecting to fall in love with Ukrainian food, but I absolutely did. It's comfort food all the way through. I miss вареники/varenyky; the cabbage filled ones were my favorite. Or the dessert ones, with sour cherries. Of course with сметана/smetana, aka. sour cream. I miss all the delicious, flavourfull teas. I drank a lot of raspberry and peppermint teas... I actually didn't like tea before moving to Ukraine, and that completely changed. I also miss квас/kvass, drinking it on top of Дім Легенд next to the car, or the time we got homemade компот/kompot for Ukrainian christmas on January 7th. But what I absolutely miss the most is (if I remember the name correctly) косичка/kosychka, the braided, smoked string cheese. Delicious, salty, fresh... I have had serious cravings since coming back home 5 years ago, and it is impossible to find in Denmark. Which is a shame, because it. Is. Magical
Thank you for your comment! It makes me want to travel to my mother's home country Ukraine 😊. My favourite comfort food growing up (and now) was varenyki, but I cannot buy them in Australia and find them difficult to make nowadays. May I ask how you ended up living in Ukraine? Did you have work set up beforehand?
Also, we don't eat anything on crackers. The pickled tomatoes are usually an addition to other dishes, for example to mashed potatoes. And the cod liver is usually spread on a piece of white or brown bread. The toasts (грінки - {grinky}) in the form you got them are usually an addition to a beer. Restaurants may add them to the salads or soups, but not so often.

Although that's not our day-to-day food, i was really pleased to see that you enjoyed it . Thank you for having shown respect for my country! Best regards, from Ukraine! 🇺🇦☺️
I went to Ukraine in 2008 and one of the first things we were told by our interpreters is that most of the people in Ukraine hate when you call their country "The Ukraine" it is just Ukraine.
brooklynbaby1987 So thankful you let us know that! And now I also don't feel so strange or alone lol! I am one of those that always thought it sounded better with "the" in front...but I have no idea WHY!😯I guess it is just a "thing" a quirk that hits some people but not others. ? It still confounds me-but now I won't feel so nuts-And I also won't make that mistake if I ever talk to someone or about Ukraine! Why tho? Why! Lol.😳✌🙏😍
Laura Metheny What we were told is that Ukraine was actually called the Ukraine when it was part of the USSR. Since the fall of communism and the USSR, many Ukrainians have a great sense of national pride as an independent country. "The Ukraine" was their identity as part of the USSR; Ukraine (without the, the) is their identity as a free nation.
brooklynbaby1987 Lovely info! Idk if thats it for me-but maybe. To me it was like a grammer thing or something dumb like that. You know like how in English you are supposed to use "an" before a vowel. As in "an old lady" and "a" before a consonant as in "a dumb old lady"? Lol. Sometimes tho even following that rule sounds weird to me. Just for some words. Ukraine isn't the only one I flub I fear. There is another one that is escaping this old lady brain right now.😱Somewhere around Haiti or Jamaica or ? I know there is another. But maybe I will catch it now and not screw THAT one up either! Thanks to all this helpful info! I am with Emmy on that. If I do something wrong or wacky I wanna know! My grandpa used to do devotions over the phone at home and he wrote a couple of books of sayings. I remember him telling us "the day you stop learning or wanting to-is the day you are ready to die". Idk if it was "his" but it was something he lived by. My granny too. Have a great week guys!✌😍😽

I am so stunned to see products from my nearest market 😀
Although that's not our day-to-day food, i was really pleased to see that you enjoyed it .
Thank you for having shown respect for my country!
Best regards, from Ukraine! 🇺🇦☺️
I went to Ukraine in 2008 and one of the first things we were told by our interpreters is that most of the people in Ukraine hate when you call their country "The Ukraine" it is just Ukraine.
brooklynbaby1987 ik I don't get y ppl say "the" b4 that say the country
brooklynbaby1987 So thankful you let us know that!
+aiyanna peoples It's an age thing. People grew up saying it with "the" so it's hard to stop now.
brooklynbaby1987 Lovely info!
Еммі, дякую. Ти прекрасна!

Former president but yeah
She did not say that this product was Russian, she read the name of the bar
I don’t know why, but watching you taste our food made me sooo happy! The atmosphere of the video is so sweet and nice, it’s like a hug but in a tape form, excuse my cheesy comparison🙈
Lots of love from Kyiv!💛

It was amusing to see your reactions on some Ukrainian food.
Смачного and all the best!
Hi Emmy! So I was born in Ukraine. And I loved this video because it’s a lot of the sweets I love!! Especially the tomat. I grew up eating those. But I had a peeve when you opened the video and said ‘the Ukraine’ we who were born there do not like when people say ‘the’ in front of Ukraine because it’s kind of like a negative tone to it. It’s just Ukraine. x
The pickled tomato syrup is called "brine" and it helps a lot during a hangover. I'm an expert in this) try to drink brine during the hangover in the morning. greetings from Ukraine)
You were so genuinely happy and excited in this video - after a horrible day I needed this so much. Thank you for being a ray of sunshine for those of us under the clouds

Oh my goodness, I'm in love with your channel❤️. I'm Ukrainian living in UAE.
The carpathian tea with daisy and fennel, with a teaspoon of sugar is the tastiest tea I've ever drank. It's basic in a good way and I can't get full of it!
And as a Ukrainian I'm highly recommend it if you like dry weed type of tea
Thanks for the video😊
