You videos on the Alpha drives are great! Thanks for uploading and sharing. 2 questions, where did you purchase the decal kit and I see you are using Merc 90 weight conventional lube. Have you tried synthetic and what is your opinion on it? This year I used synthetic lube in my Alpha drive and when I changed it this fall I found the lube black. Didn't experience discoloration with conventional. I was told synthetic will normally turn black however I couldn't find further information to back that statement. What do you think? Normal or should I be removing the drive for inspection as it may be a result of over heating? Regardless, I will be rebuilding a spare Alpha drive this winter and your videos will be very helpful. Thanks again.
Hey Michael, I just bought an alpha 1 gen 1. I’m having a lot of trouble finding parts and the correct service manual. What is the service manual you are referring to? And can you provide a link? Thank you!
Thanks for all you do! I just removed my first outdrive and replaced a upper shift shaft seal thanks to your mercruiser videos ! Does anyone ever actually do a vacuum test? Or is it all pressure. My 95 5.0 alpha one gen 2 drive holds under 12 psi but if you put side ways tension on the lower shift shaft, it leaks visually dropping the gauge and you can here it. Does that mean I need to rebuild the lower unit? And if I’m separating the upper and lower do I now need to rebuild the upper as well?
Thanks for watching, we appreciate that. Awesome job making it a DIY project. Pressure test is the way to go. Any leaks in our opinion must be addressed. You might benefit greatly on a lower unit breakdown so you can replace seals. If all bearings and gears look fine, replacing seals should be all you need. We will always be here to help answer questions as you work through any project on your outdrive. 😎👍

Thanks for watching, our exact serial number outdrive requires (Mercruiser Service Manual 6).
We can help you find parts, reach out to us any time. 😎👍
Is that pulling a vacuum or actually pumping in air. Cause I have a hand held vacuum pump like that I could use my gear oil pump fitting to attach it

Good morning ☕️
This is pressurizing case as we pump air into outdrive. 😁👍🧰

Are you pressure testing or vacuum testing?
Good morning, it’s important to perform a pressure-test prior to refilling drive with gear oil.
@DIYwithMichaelBorders I know that. My question was are, are you pressurizing the drive or drawing a vacuum? You're using a hand vacuum pump, correct?
