  • In this video I demonstrate the replacement of the lower driveshaft seal and discuss the water tube pocket inspection on older 1983-1990 Mercruiser Alpha One sterndrives.

@Teds Marine Repair thank you very much for posting this video. It is very helpful and much appreciated! I just replaced the water pump impeller on a second hand alpha 1 gen 1 drive I recently bought and that seal was gone (spring floating around free and not much of the sealing lip left) so this was exactly what I needed to see. Thanks again!

oh, just one question: what # of loctite did you use when you installed the seal?

Perfect video I was looking for my leak but it had been about 16 months since I took it apart and moved across the country and my manual doesn't show this seal going there. I have a question though, how do you get the shaft o-ring past the seal? I tried it without installing it and it just rolls it off. Thanks in advance

Great video! I'm getting ready to replace the
drive shaft housing oil seals (alpha one gen
two) but not sure which way the oil seals face.
They are identical, have one flush side and the
other side is open with a spring inside. I would
    love some insight. Thank you.

If they are the ones in the plastic water pump base, the face away from one another (open sides out).
One seals out the water, the other seals in the gear lube.

@@tedsmarinerepair8956 they don’t go in the plastic water base. It sits against the metal casing and the vertical gear goes into it. It's similar to your oil seal that you used the punch for and a rubber mallet to tap in. But it appears the alpha one gen two uses two smaller seals. But I believe they go like you said. Thank you!

my drive is alpha one gen two. the seal on the upper unit is leaking oil down my drive shaft on the lower unit. it doesn't seem it can be replaced through the exhaust cavity like in this video. It seems it's installed from the top. also I'm having trouble finding info on the part# of the upper shift shaft seal on the bell housing. will the brass one piece work on the gen 2 or do I need the 2 seals with brass bushing like I took out of it?

Yes for GEN II you must disassemble the upper gear housing to change the driveshaft seal.
And for the upper shift shaft seal it is a completely different seal/bushing part #. Here is a link bpi.ebasicpower.com/mm5/apps2/master/showparts.php?COM_NAME=Bell%20Housing&MODEL=5&IMAGE=1000000067&ITEM_ID=404

thank you very much for confirming this for me. I couldn't find any videos on the Gen-2 break down. as for the drive shaft seals my shaft is worn where the seals ride, so I'm thinking new seals may not even seat.

Hey Ted, please help…I have an alpha one gen 2. I have gear oil leaking back into boat. The hose from the monitor tank to the drive is not leaking. It’s entering the drive and leaking under engine right above the plug hole. There doesn’t appear to have any oil one the outside of the drive. No drops on the ground. Do you have any experience with this type of leak and how to diagnose it.

It sounds like the carrier seal on the upper ujoint yoke has failed. If you pull the drive off it will be evident.

Thanks so much Ted, you are the man. I’m very confident I can do this myself. Can you suggest a parts list that is needed to get this done. I know I’ll need some new seals, I just don’t know which ones. Thanks again.

Packing the seal where the spring is will keep the spring in the seal so you don't tap the spring out

If I dont have the driver tool for the oil seal, can I use a socket with long extension to tap it in?

So I have oil leaking into the bellows. No water in the gear oil. Which seal has failed?

There are two in the upper yoke that are behind the large spanner nut that work together to keep the gear oil in the upper half. You'll need to redo those. There are some VERY sensitive torque measurements to deal with when you do, so take care (inch pounds of rolling torque). Also, need a new compression washer. some good videos on TH-cam if you decide to try it.
