Love your videos Mike, saved me $2000.00 on the bellows and $700.00 on the upper gear case seals, can you believe a dealer wanted over $300.00 for the upper hub joint which I found on Amazon for $80.00
We are honored to read this, thank you. Saving that much money is an amazing thing.
Sounds like you have been busy, and that’s a big difference in price for the upper hub…😳

Yeah it can be a real pain trying to install the lower unit to the upper while on the boat, especially when the drive is at an angle and by yourself, nicely done 👍😁
Putting my hand between the gearcases to align the water tube did the trick. Good vid!
Very cool, great to hear. Thanks for taking the time to share this. Enjoy the rest of your weekend. 😎👍
Great video. I am currently swapping my cracked lower unit with another one and I couldn’t have done it without these videos! If I end up having to rebuild one I now know where to come! I have subscribed, thanks for these videos 🙌🏼🙏🏻
We appreciate that, comments like this mean the world to us. No joke! 😎👍

I believe Mercruiser has done away with the o-ring on the driveshaft and all the parts diagrams seem to confirm this. I can see why. I absolutely could not get mine to go back together. Fortunately, I was doing mine the same way (upper off the boat) and was able to dig out the TWO o-rings that were stuck up in there binding up the driveshaft.
Thanks for watching and sharing this info. Always greatly appreciated to hear from our viewers. 😎👍🧰
FYI, the unit I have is a replacement from SEI and it doesn’t have the rubber bushing/gasket at the top of the shaft before the splines.
Good morning ☕️ thanks for sharing.
If the upper is already installed on boat. Do I need to put the Quicksilver shift handle in forward or reverse?
The manual I picked up says to use perfect seal, can't remember part number off hand, when joining the two halves. Just FYI.
Thanks for watching and sharing. Keep us posted on your project. 👍
Thanks for the video! At 11:18 you show spinning the u joints to test the prop, mine won’t spin at all?! I actually tried 2 different units and neither can spin, is that normal? My out drive is a little different than yours, for example I don’t have a washer (with the screw) by the shifter. Is it normal for the u joint unit not to spin? My shifter only seems to go from the centre and left position and the prop always spins freely. Please help any advice would be much appreciated! Thank you
Alpha 1 gen 1. New impeller and now boat foesnt draw any water into the cooling system. I took off the lower swcrion of the outdrive to verify... and everything looks ok. Im stumped. Any advice would be amazing. I love how detailed you are.
Info: if i blow in the hose at the thermostat hoising...air comes out of my propeller. Which mwans the water intake tube must not have been connected to my impeller housing....but i cant figure out how that would be possible
Thanks for watching, any update on your findings? By chance do you recall if the rubber impeller blades were installed and facing the proper way?
Another common cause of this is having the water pump/impeller gaskets not placed properly…which can completely shut off water flow. Please keep us posted Will.

Hi, love the video. Quick question. The drive shaft is going into the upper casings vertical gear at 3:47. That oil seal right there in the upper housing, does that only hold the grease on the splines inside or does it hold back gear oil? Thanks in advance!
Thanks for watching, great question. It keeps the grease on the splines.
The gear oil will be sent through the feed-line from lower unit and enter upper unit at the feed-line port hole.
Keep us posted on your project. 🧰
@@DIYwithMichaelBorders Thanks! I crushed the bearring when re-installing the lower unit. Got a new bearring already! I really enjoy the channel. There is little information online about the R stern drives so I was really relieved to see a full rebuild on your channel!
