Injector pump tear down

  • This is a disassembly of a 3 cylinder diesel injector pump in a Jinma 224 tractor. A view of how bad the bearings are and why it would barely start and run. This in not a rebuild as a new injector pump is less than $300 from China.

I found mine empty of oil today, a bit of a surprise. Tractor still runs but wondering if some damage occurred...

Mine would run but it keep loosing power and was hard to start. Using the manual pump it would not get firm. You could feel it bleeding off as you tried to prime the system. I run mine for over a year with a bad pump. If you are lucky you bearings will still be good. I would keep the oil level full and check it often. If you keep loosing oil it is going into the engine. It should not hurt anything, just keep the oil level full.

@@mikedrew9361 Yes, I believe you're correct about all of that except priming. You have to open a screw on the upper left of the injector pump to purge air from the fuel while using the primer pump?
Anyway, good news for me, it seems my injector pump was just severely low on oil and no harm was done b/c after filling it with oil and setting for a couple days, the oil remained. Actually, it seems even with bad drive gear seal there will still be some oil trapped inside the pump. It's a little perplexing how the injector pump can empty completely unless there's leakage from the bottom drain. I can see how the injector pump might become contaminated with fuel (leaking lift pump piston seal) but a drive shaft seal won't cause the pump to become completely dry of lube oil.
Anyway, mine seems to be fine, I need to check the oil level more often (this is 2nd time in 15 years I've checked and filled it both times). I'll drain and refill it before winter storage then check it again in spring.
Thanks for your help understanding this thing. Tractor starts and runs as new, pops right off like it always has.

@@thisisyourcaptainspeaking2259 Good to hear. I had never changed my oil in the pump. My bad. When the bearings started to go bad it let the fuel leak pass the plunger and back into the tank. Would not build pressure for the injectors. Made for hard starting until it would not start at all. As for having air in the line, that is normally when you run out of fuel and yes you would have to purge the air out.

@@mikedrew9361 Yes, I've never taken one of these injector pumps apart or photographed the inside parts but looks like there's a main shaft with cams ground into it. This main shaft is gear driven by the engine, and the cams appear to actuate the lift pump(fuel pump) piston and each injector pump piston. It's unclear to me how the governor assembly modulates injector volume but suffice it to say if a lube problem occurs such as lube contamination from fuel or loss of lube, the shaft bearings and actuating cam surfaces will suffer. Anyway, agree keeping up with maintaining the sump lube is key and neglect is a recipe for failure. Hope your tractor is doing well, the only problems I've had with mine were self-inflicted but I think I've got the hang of it. Pretty trouble-free and this allows for neglect, if lacking maintenance discipline. Locating and paying for parts gets frustrating, so I'm trying to learn as much as possible to avoid self-inflicted issues, lol. ;) Thanks again for documenting your injector pump experience and sharing with the world!

Where did you order your new pump? everywhere i look its 500 or so but you say you got yours for under 300?

It came from China. A China tractor so a China part. I believe it was Alli Express.
