    Learn how a jerk helix fuel pump works! It’s a variable injection jerk type pump that is used to supply fuel to an internal combustion engine (typically marine engines). The pump has a simple but effective method for controlling when fuel is injected and the volume of fuel injected.

    Good animation. This style (non VIT) has fixed timing for the beginning of injection and only varies the end of injection. The VIT version of these pumps is controlled by a second rack & pinion that moves the barrel up and down, and therefore the height of the spill port, with respect to the helix. Another important feature not shown here is the puncture valve.

    7:17 - As a fairly newly licensed diesel mechanic who has, by nature, not had the pleasure of dealing with mechanical fuel systems simply because they are no longer around. That being said, my curious mind has always been baffled by the true impact of rack manipulation in terms of effective plunger stroke vs helix position. 10 out of 10. Clear, descriptive and intelligent.

    If Iunderstan correctly the quadrant will only be able to rotate less than 180° before fuel leakages begins from minimum injection volime to maximum injection volume. We never see the back of the helix to confirm full construction.
    Splendid animation.
    You might include fuel color to indicate pump pressure changes from low at fill, high during injection volumes, then revert back to low when leakage begins.

    • @kanishkaroy3478
      @kanishkaroy3478 ปีที่แล้ว

      I could not find the exact answer actually. But this is what i think is most probable. The order of entry of starting air via starting air valve is controlled by the air distributor, which in turn follows a dedicated camshaft ( or sometimes just driven) for controlling air distributor only. This dedicated camshaft is again connected to the main camshaft which in itself executes a firing order i.e. sequence of firing of the engine units. Now I am assuming when the crankshaft attains enough rpm the pneumatic signal (low pressure air starting signal) which allows the bottle air to pass onto pilot valve and main air starting valve ( via automatic valve)is blocked just before the air control valve, ceasing the whole system operation. Now how this air signal is stopped I am not sure of....maybe it is controlled by a master and slave electronic controller which takes feedback from the rpm meter.

    So...am I correct in thinking that the reciprocation of the plunger is caused by something not shown? Is the thing causing the reciprocation also controlling the timing? Since the amount of fuel pumped per cycle is controlled by the position of the quadrant and rack (and hence the helix), am I also correct in thinking that the length of stroke of the piston is constant?

    • @savree-3d

  • @suchcone
    @suchcone ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Amazing visualisation! What I'm missing is understanding where the lifting force comes from, where the movement of the rack is controlled (does the engine adjust the rack depending on how much fuel it needs?), And what happens to the fuel that spills out - does it drain away or is there a tank? Presumably it doesn't go to waste :)

    • @kanishkaroy3478
      @kanishkaroy3478 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Allow me to answer. The lifting force comes from a cam and follower arrangement. The follower pushes the plunger up and down as it is controlled by the cam on the camshaft, the camshaft in turn is controlled by the engine crankshaft. The camshaft thus controls the firing order i.e the timing of the fuel injection. Now the rack movement (which controls the quantity of fuel to be delivered ) is connected to the governor which as we know works as per the load on the engine. As per the fuel that spills out I am assuming it meets the end of the re-circulation line and goes back into the buffer tank( not sure though)

      The answer to your question is the governor. A system of weights incorporated into the pump body, driven by the pump-cam act on the governor arm, which in turn alters the position of the rack depending on operator demand. Check out the Cummins p7100, it’s a super simple system but very clear.

    • @tylerdominelli3736
      @tylerdominelli3736 ปีที่แล้ว

      Furthermore, the excess fuel is referred to as “return”. The post injection event which essentially is the fuel driven through the spill port by way of the pump spring is recycled to the reservoir. If properly filtered and separated from any moisture before hand, the excess fuel should be safe to head straight to the tank, in a well serviced fuel system, of course.
