    In this video we show you how to replace a power door lock assembly on a 1st Gen Toyota Tacoma. The door lock assembly we replaced is the driver side front. This procedure would be the same for the passenger side front. The steps and procedures to remove a rear extended cab or extra cab door lock assembly might be different .
    The repair unfortunately didn't work for us because the problem was a wiring issue but we felt the video still has value for anyone needing to replace the power door lock assembly on their 1st Gen Tacoma.

    Yes, thank you for keeping this up! I replaced the power door lock assembly on both doors of my Tacoma; I was only able to do it because of this video. The passenger side door lock hasn't worked in 15 years...now it does!

    Timmy thanks for the video, I ordered a new motor on Amazon and opted to solder wires, it was challenging because its almost impossible to solder the wires from the outside, the new motor contacts are too small and you burn the bottom plastic piece, I had to open the new motor and solder everything from the inside (becarefu with the wires polarity). It was a long process but totally worth it, it saved me $500 from new OEM parts.

    Hi,Tim:
    Great Video! I had the same problem you did. I completed the installation on the driver’s side tried the power lock and it didn’t work. The other thing noticed was the window did not go all the way down. Today, I removed the door panel again and found that I had routed the wires for the lockIng motor behind the window track. So that when I operated the window it placed tension on the cable and pulled one of the pins out of the connector. I pushed the connector pin back in place and rerouted the cable to a position between the window track and the interior side of the door and now the locks and the window work perfectly! 😅 Bob

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I bet a lot of people mistakingly route the cable in the way of the window track. I almost did it myself.

    Awesome video Timmy! Just like all your other videos too. My 2000 Tacoma was recently broken into and the door handle assembly + lock cylinder got damaged by jimmying somehow. I still have to do the repair but your video showed me my damage might be limited to the door handle assembly itself - everything is still working. Whew, maybe? Do you happen to know whether there are aftermarket versions of that? I can't say for certain whether that was how they got in, but it is certainly damaged, and I will be tracing around to see if they got enough access + leverage to move the attached lock rod and gain entry. The lock cylinder is still attached but only on the right side and was pushed in enough to break the door handle's plastic trim piece on the bottom. There's probably a video on how to break into the tacoma that way LOL. If I can see how they did it I may have to try jury-rigging some sort of interior armoring piece to defeat any future similar attempts.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Love your videos! I’m also experiencing this issue. I was lucky to find a used oem actuator at a local pick n pull. The actuator has accumulated 20+ years of dust & dirt. Great video! Question: I have a 2001 Toyota Tacoma and over the past few months both keys have stopped working to unlock the doors from the outside. I can lock the door with the key, but I cannot turn the key physically at all after the key is inserted. Do you have any idea if this relates to specifically changing the Tumblr or whether it relates to changing the entire electronic lock assembly? I already bought aftermarket tumblers, looking at your video, looks like a lot of steps to go through to begin the investigation. I’d rather not do all the work until I have the right replacement parts on hand. This is the question! Are the tumblers what I need or do I need to come up with entire electronic lock assemblies or something else? Thanks very much. If you can help at all, that would be much appreciated.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would assume the inability to turn the key in the lock means it's an issue with the tumbler. Do you have any other spare keys you can try to see if it's just a worn-out key?

    It looked like the interior door lock handle rod was maybe not easy to reinstall, as the rod was under some tension when it was removed. Is there a trick to reconnecting the rod? Is there a "part 2" for this video showing the competed reinstallation of everything?

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Getting the door handle back in took some time to figure out the right orientation but it wasn't really that hard. The rod wasn't under any tension. There is no trick other than the instructions I give in the video. There is no Part 2. The only thing we didn't show was putting the door panel back on and making the electrical connections. We showed you how to get it off which means you should be able to get it back on. It's not hard to do. If you pay close attention to everything I say, you shouldn't have any issues completing this job.

  • @wesleyfuruya3659
    @wesleyfuruya3659 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know the financial pain with the powered locking actuator, mine is starting to fail on my 1st gen taco too.
    You might be able to bend the tabs on the motor housing and swap the base of the motor. I've disassembled a few (DC motors) as a kid, and they usually just hold a bearing and the brush to the commutator at the base. You could probably also get a local maker space, HS, college to 3D print an new gear for the replacement motor. Doesn't solve your problem, but worth a shot if you are tossing out the parts.
    I know you checked the wiring, but maybe the switch is the issue. I'm not sure if the switch is easy to replace, but if it is a simple rocker switch... it could be easy to "hack" something together.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the suggestions. I thought about being able to swap the base of the old one to a new one but I guess I wasn't gentle enough and pretty much mangled it. The switch for the door I don't believe is the problem because the passenger side switch locks and unlocks all the doors except the driver door and same goes for the door lock switch on the driver door.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like an electrical issue to me but it's hard to know for sure unless you can swap in another actuator that you know works and it still has the same issue. That's what I ran into while working on my friend Alex's rig. There is an electrical issue somewhere but I couldn't figure it out.

    The power lock works to unlock and lock all 3 out of 4 doors, except the driver side. The driver side locks and unlocks with the key outside and manually inside.
    Is there something I need to check or does the driver side actuator need replacing?

    I saw another video explain the electric connector once taken out you cannot put a key in the ignition or it will cause a fail code and in some cases will not allow the car to start. Perhaps something to do with an alarm system. I don't know if this is true but it could point to the computer needing to be reset or the codes cleared before it will lock unlock etc. Connect up the reader and see. I do know when I bought my 2003 they had an alarm system in it that I did not want to pay for and the dealer was able to disable the alarm themselves, I guess by clearing or disabling something in the computer. If the computer believes the car is being broken into I could see how the actuator might shut down in an attempt to keep the vehicle from being stolen... My two cents

    It's probably the body module or "Integration relay" either itself or a connector. The body module is pretty much part of the fuse panel under the dash so I would test directly on the body module to see if it is itself and get a factory service manual to get wiring info for that exact double cab Tacoma post 2001 when they change a bunch of things not really to be better for the consumer. I have to say that every 1st gen Tacoma or 3rd gen 4Runner I work on have large differences post 2001.

    3 years ago my driver's side quit opening from inside. I looked into a new door latch to find the dealer nor recycler would sell me just the latch. The electronics worked fine and just screwed on. I took it apart and cleaned it up and used wd40 on the pivot part of the lever that attaches to the inside rod. When I put it back together it was still the same problem, then 3 weeks later it started to work better. The problem still occurs and what it does is in the summer when the direct sun bakes on that side it acts up but is no problem in the winter and no snow here.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the little RC motor in the actuator failing. Not working when it's hot is a sign it's time to replace it. I'd just get a cheap aftermarket replacement for the actuator. You can find them for sale on Ebay and Amazon. The Toyota replacements are very expensive.

    • @nomadyesmad4875
      @nomadyesmad4875 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TimmyTheToolman I don't think it's the motor because that is the attached electronic part of the door latch. The lock has never failed to work as the back door did when 5 years old. I got that from the junkyard. My problem seems to have something to do with the latch (a mechanical part) as it's the inside handle that fails to open the door during hot weather. I haven't been able to find a replacement except what the dealer had 3 years ago. Maybe I should try the junkyard.

    Off topic here Timmy but I really need help! Can't find out where this coolant leak is coming from on my 01 Toyota Tacoma V6 2WD Prerunner. It's coming from near water pump drivers side. Just replaced timing belt and water pump thanks to your videos followed step by step thinking it was from water pump. I wasn't sold on it leaking from water pump in the first place as it was replaced less than 50k miles ago along with timing belt but went ahead and replaced pump anyways. Sure enough leak is back and coming from the same area but no clear sign as to exactly where. I'm scared it might be a head gasket but once again I'm not sold on that either as I have no signs (white smoke, coolant in oil, nothing under cap ect.) just a dam stubborn coolant leak. Could it be this "Water By Pass Pipe" I've been researching? Part # 1626862060. And is there any sign or any way to see this and verify without tearing stuff off? I've seen a couple videos on the 4 cylinder would it be the same on V6? Also replaced oil cooler hose that connects to water pump to make sure that wasn't the leak as that it is very close to where leak is coming from. Please help. Thank you in advance.

      www.tacomaworld.com/threads/coolant-in-the-intake-manifold.601843/page-2 . This should be the culprit 🤬 almost thought I had a bad head gasket. And wasted my time doing a timing belt and water pump after only 50k on previous one's. Looks like its in the middle of the "valley" under plenum.

      If it's accumulating in the valley between the heads, it's most likely intake manifold gaskets. Our video which show how to replace the fuel injectors will get you most of the way there to getting the intake manifold out. th-cam.com/video/N-lhZIWOkyU/w-d-xo.html
