    The issue is that manufacturers are incentivized to focus on the number of functionalities instead of their accuracy. Not many people will test the accuracy, nor will they watch your reviews, but they will compare the functionalities instead.

    • @krollpeter
      @krollpeter 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yep, that is also what the marketing focusses on, many functions.
      Actually better accuracy would be nice, but more important is consistency to detect health issues. Helps if anything is not as it always was.
      I had the idea to allow user input. If I have my own O2 sensor or a heart rate sensor, I can input this data a couple of times into the software of the watch, and it would re-adjust itself to the wearers condition. The watch could even suggest when to do that, so that different conditions would be covered better.

    • @SF-li9kh
      @SF-li9kh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      True, but anyone with a good brain knows accuracy matters. Amazfit for example make good watches with pathetic accuracy.

      And the worst thing is so many of the tech influencers on TH-cam, those bigger channels, they totally gloss over the accuracy claims with half assed efforts at measuring anything at all, some dont even do any measurements but then go to claim the readings were accurate anyway like the viewers are supposed to just take their word for it right after they admit they got their hands on a review sample or a unit directly from the vendors.

      The issue is coming from Chinese culture. More crap. Always more crap. At the opposite: Japan, Germany, Swiss, etc.. Minimalist but super accurate stuff are coming from them. Americans tend to be more and more on the Chinese culture side... Sadly. Korean and Taiwan seems to be in the middle. Sometimes very nice, sometimes very crappy.

    These videos are priceless, putting companies at their place with their nonsense marketing bullshit. It's being quite revealing to see the self-declared market leaders (Garmin, Polar) performing quite bad compared to non sport oriented brands. Awesome work as usual Rob, huge thanks!

    • @nomoshiti
      @nomoshiti 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Garmin or Polar are sports oriented watches (ok, some by Garmin are not) and please tell me at least one brand that beats them is sports analytics? And as a Polar user and Fitbit experimenter I can say that sleep score for both of them are +/-3 every night. If it's more than 3 it's almost always because Fitbit gets wake up/going to bed times wrong and I have to adjust them according to Polar. And except for Apple, let's not talk about the accuracy of HR monitoring for the device that don't even let you connect external HR chest strap.

    Great work as always! There's one thing I'd really like you to cover, that is the sleep tracking performance of smartwatches/bands when using a third-party algorithm, specifically SleepAsAndroid app for android. This would take away those mediocre proprietary algorithms from the equation an really show the potential of a device. Although it doesn't support every device, it does a good job paired with wearos devices, mibands, amazfit, and some others. I'd honestly love to see it being tested!

    @thequantifiedscientist Wow! The most indepth review I have seen. However, all your tests are done with a pre-release unit. The official launch date of the watch 5 is August 26th, so you may be missing some firmware updates that they were planning on pushing out prior to the release date. Updates and software could potentially skew all your results, like battery life. It would be interesting to see the same in-depth review after the official release date to make sure that the unit has all the firmware updates as intended upon release.

  • @yildiraykomurcu
    @yildiraykomurcu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Rob, I am kind of disappointed that you didn’t include blood pressure and body composition tests in your complete review of Galaxy Watch 5. I think you didn’t include those tests not because you can’t make an analysis on them but because other devices don’t offer these features. But it is not Samsung’s fault to have these features and lead the way. I believe others will follow Samsung and add these features in the near future. I wouldn’t conclude my opinion on Galaxy Watch 5’s health capabilities without seeing how well it performs in blood pressure and body composition measurements. It is also weird that you haven’t come up with a nice idea to do ECG tests as it is a feature offered by many watches now. At the very least, if you have access to raw ECG data, it is possible to do HRV test. Or it should be possible to input the raw ECG data to existing programs and output some cardiac parameters. I am also disappointed by the battery life of Watch 5. All the best.

  • @GadgeteerZA
    @GadgeteerZA ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'd certainly agree that when this watch is tracking the heart rate, it is pretty accurate. I bought mine end of Dec 2022, and it was doing a perfect job for about a month, then end of Jan/beg Feb it started to not track the increase of heart rate after the start of an exercise. This sometimes happened up to a third or more of the way through the workout. Once it tracked it was perfect to the end of the workout. But despite having it at Samsung Repair twice now, with parts replaced, it appears even worse, even when reset back to Nov 2022 firmware by Samsung. Now I see I'm not the only one complaining about workout tracking HR. So today I bought a Polar H10 chest strap instead for the workouts. Although many do report this issue, not everyone has the issue, but it is worth noting in case others also have this problem. Other functions and normal; resting HR etc all seem to work fine though.

    Some of the positives/negatives may be due to the apps/software algorithms (which are the same/similar) rather than the hardware. So the results may improve as they work out the bugs, but new hardware may not be the answer.

    Very interesting and useful video, though I am not quite sure about your assessment on the measurements on GPS accuracy. I sail and have two Garmin GPS devices (one of them being the Garmin 78) and several navigation programs (apps) installed on my tablet and cell-phone to assist me while doing my navigation through the waters. Any of those are continuously informing the GPS positioning inaccuracy, which might very commonly vary from nothing up to plus-minus 25 meters deviation/inaccuracy (even when more than three satellites might be being used to set a position). The error/inaccuracy tends to be jumpy and not constant. Now let’s imagine that when you were cycling one day, at a given location there was a 20 meters error on determining your position and lets say it happened to be to the right of your path, and then the next day, there was for the same location a 20 meters deviation to the left. That could (could it?) determine a 40 meters difference of the specific location drawn for the path (track) from one day to the other (but that could have happened even if a Garmin specialized GPS was used to do the tracking). I am not saying that the watch’s GPS is or is not good enough (I don´t know and probably is not perfect), I am just saying that I think (though might be wrong) that your measurements in this regard might not be taking into account (might be overlooking) a variable or perhaps are missing an efficiency comparison with other GPS devices (as you certainly did for other covered aspects of the watch). (sorry for my English, as it is not my native language).

    I remember when I first got the watch 3 it used to stay for two days, then after an update it wouldn't even last a day, and later back to 2 days after yet another update. Could be a software thing that could be fixed later for the watch 5.

    Hi! I really like the videos. If you would take a suggestion, please rank between devices by some metric like, mean square error of the benchmark. Each video compares a device to a benchmark. But, the videos do not compare them across different devices or different generations of the same devise. By ranking devices by metrics like mean square error, we can see which are the best devices for the things we care about, see them evolve each year, and push manufacturers to improve. I am also curious about which device do you actually use! 😀

    Regarding extra awake time. I already mentioned this, but samsung states awake time also include moments when you change position, so it's not necessarily "awake" time, but rather movement detected by the watch. However, this monitoring seems to be worse than what I had with my watch4 lol

    Hi, I really love your videos and appreciate the work you put in them. One suggestion from myself is maybe compare it against the watch that it replaces (in this case, it will be the GW4). I know you have the graph comparing it but GW4 have received quite a few updates since then so would like to see how how the GW5 fairs against GW4 running on the latest. Also, any way of testing the ECG and/or body composition? Thanks.

      I'd also be interested in the body composition testing. I'm consistently measuring ~10% higher body fat than my home scale and tester at the gym.

    I also do weight lifting, not with the watch 5 but the watch 4. I tried to analyse if its able to pick up the increase in heart rate during sets, and it does not have problems doing this. But i also don't doubt that you are wearing the watch correctly.
    It might be a bit misleading that in your particulair case its not able to pick up the heart rate during lifting correctly, but for others it might be able to. it would be interesting to test this with another person, possibly different posture aswel.

    I noticed that on the Samsung Healths app, if you look into sleep it generates data information for you along with the sleep cycles. Though the Watch5 still has a lot of awake time.

    This is helpful information only you do. However it doesn't change my mind I'm sticking with galaxy watch 5 over huwawei lol due to a few reasons:
    -Galaxy watch has more 3rd party app
    -Its on sale on samssung site
    -It allows to message and text back with letting me know I sent the msg
    -I can watch some videos on it
    -I have a Galaxy phone

    Hi. Nice evaluation of bells and whistles. However, it seems comparisons to any other consumer monitor, in this case the polar monitor is always open to any possible weaknesses in the reference. You should introduce this video with a quick bit of discussion where you compare the polar to medical grade devices. If this was a scientific paper under review this point would cause me to ask for "major revisions" and a second review. But nice info and useful place to start. Maybe samsung will make some software improvement as the device is in operation. But again, its difficult to fully evaluate a device vs. another consumer device.

    I want to give Rob a shout-out about this review. This is the most informative video I have seen on the Samsung Watch 5. Also, it changes my decision not to buy it. I am looking for an accurate smartwatch to measure my blood pressure and workout heart rate. I wonder if anyone can offer their unbiased opinion as to which ones are the best?
