Ive seen other families talk about their experiences coming and living in NZ and everyone has unique perspective. But the main difference I notice between them and your journey/experience is attitude. Sure everythings not perfect and you have your downs here, but youre both always looking at the positives and making the best of situations. Think it takes anything between 3 - 5 years to feel properly settled in and used to a new country. There’s always some ups n downs along the journey. Best of wishes to you both, you do seem to have a positive attitude which will help immensely. Auckland isn’t normally as windy as lately, the weather patterns have been weird the last year or so. Hoping things finally settle down.

The best advice I got when I immigrated to Australia was to,
“Find a footy team to support - Find an Australian beer to drink - Make Australian Mates…… because there is nothing nicer than drinking a few beers with your mates watching and chatting about the footy”
The lesson is to integrate, celebrate and be comfortable with your difference, DO NOT let it isolate you.
I’ll never understand why our best efforts, hopes and dreams of our beloved rainbow nation weren’t realistic and to be honest I no longer care, and in my experience neither do the people we meet in our new countries. Don’t let the “hangover” of THAT disappointment affect your experience of your new life, YOUR new beginning. Good luck❤

I think that the reason i just love your videos is because of your infectious enthusiasm and beautiful attitude to life and your adventure. My family and I had a similar experience when we immigrated from SA to Australia 26 years ago - and your stories bring back all the same memories for us, having lived a similar journey. Hey you two! Miss you! Great topic to cover! As an immigrant myself, I know that there are a lot of difficulties you face that not anyone can fully understand. I was so young when I moved to the US by myself and it changed me and made me who I am today. Luckily you moved together and have each other but it will also change you - in a positive way!

I have been unemployed now for 5years, 5234 CVs sent in 5 years, 2300 decline job interviews because of BEE, 10 hours of no electricity, been to 5 Funerals because of people I know got shot, been robbed twice, Its imposable to survive in South Africa in my option. If anyone wants to return to SA they MAD.
They are mad in YOUR OPINION, don't leave that part out.New Zealand is not heaven I can guarantee you that and many people have a lot to not leav in SA.
If you think racial politics doesn't occur in New Zealand or any overseas western countries nowerdays you are in for a rude awakening.

I've got a friend from NZ who is visiting her children in SA right now. She married a Kiwi and left several years ago. With the worsening situation in SA, she and her husband would love for the kids to immigrate from SA to NZ, but there's something about a point system that's stopping them. My friends live in Auckland and getting the kids to immigrate there is next to impossible, but would be doable if they lived on the South Island. I know it pains them all to not be together in NZ.
Yeah, it's really sad how families are being separated through emigration :(

Great vlog as always, and sound advice guys.
Before we left SA for NZ, my wife said, "what can I expect?"
I replied (and while it did not answer her question, in my mind, these were the two important issues)
1) SA/NZ drive on the same side of the road, and
2) Kiwis speak English, therefore the rest, not a problem (meaning - we will work thru the issues, as and when)
My reasoning: turn those around (learning to drive on the other side of the road, and learning a new language, after moving countries) - Yeah - Nah.

You forgot to tell your wife about cricket and rugby. Kiwis also like to braai/barbecue. Don't forget that there are thousands of Saffas living in NZ. You can still buy biltong, boerewors and SA products.

My daughters are thinking of immigration. Both are studying degrees at the moment. For me it's hard to think I'll stay behind but I'll never hold them back😢
South Africans is becoming a nation with whole in its heart .....it was once filled with family and friends fur babies now.....just a huge gabing whole.... however, if history is anything to go by, We resliant positive, never say die people, fiercely independent highly adaptable people that alone will ensure that our culture and spirit will endure the test of time we can take comfort in that.
It's such a sad reality :( Literally all of my parent's friends have children overseas...but at least they all get to travel now😅
immigrating from SA to NZ is hard but now there are so many SOuthern African folk here from SA Zimbabwe Botswana Zambia etc, NZ has a big SA population with some South africans having moved to NZ in the 90s
Hi you2, there is no end to enjoyment if a person is happy. Bear one thing in mind, never forget the future, always reserve something for then. Novilty is a thing which can wear off very quickly, take care, it comes unexpected. NZ is not SA in size, only a percentage thereof, you could be depleted of options very quickly, and then, what then. Re-visit places, they do change, it is better to strech your options. Anyway, enjoy what you have, youzzzz deserve it. Greetings, Thailand.

New Zealand is not like South Africa was. Nor is the present South Africa. I think that those that could emigrate and fit in must be grateful. Less crime, load shedding, better job security etc. I have friends living in New Zealand for 30 years now. An adjustment but they very happy.

I think moving to a new country will be much easier before you start with a family. Children make your life so much busier and they need to get to a school etc etc. Also you have no family support to help with the kids.
So starting a family after you arrive and first get settled in and know your way around would be so much easier. The children will then also be born in your new country.
Yeah, it was definitely much easier for us compared to families with children…we’re in awe of everyone coming over with their kids 😅

For anyone considering moving, for a lot of people it will take 18 months to 2 years to feel settled,
The reality of being an adult is a lot of people have established lives & frien groups. How many new friends did you make in the last year before leaving?
To make friends in Nz you have to put yourself out there. Join the various sports groups/teams or organizations. Squash, tennis, golf, hiking, etc there are 100s. On average people are said to like about 5% so as long as there are 20 people in a group you should be able to find 1.
What you cant do is hope the neighbors will be your friends & just go from home to work. The neighbors might be, but realistically theyre as random as anyone walking down the street.
Get out there & join the groups
So true...you really have to put yourself out there. As you said, joining teams/clubs/church/etc is a great way of connecting :)
Until then, we thought that South Africa was a first world country, we had never realized that it was a third world country. And now we can't adapt, we move in large numbers to New Zealand, Australia or even Portugal in the hope of recreating the 70's and 80's. There's nothing wrong with immigrating, but our reasons are basically these.
What I find sad is that there is no climate and air like South Africa, my children probably won't have that feeling of "Africanness", we are on our way to becoming the same thing as whenwes in Zimbabwe.
For sure...the weather is very different 😅
At the end of the day… NOTHING beats living in South Africa.
Not for people born in other countries NZ is the best for me SA for you As an alpine climber and skier, SA would never work - personal passions
I haven't lived in SA for 23 years. I have fantastic memories of the place and for weather, culture, people etc it's hard to beat. But for me, the constant niggle would be crime. I have two young kids and am so grateful to be raising them in a place where we feel safe.

Two things I love about home. A Maori culture forged upon absolutes on meaning and value. And, 'God defend New Zealand ' sung in two tongues by many ethnic backgrounds. If we can just understand the obvious symbols in a historic flow, New Zealand can be a beautiful place. The haka for example, which is not really a haka but rather it is a Ngere, like a chant is about a chief who saves the life of his enemy only to lose his life for doing it. I don't think that it's a coincidence that Ka Mate is our greatest export. I think, that taken the current condition in the earth today, the only place we can look to for understanding, is historical precedent. If the world ever needed Jesus, today is that day. Read the second verse of our anthem. It's mad. Cool video 😎.

My fiance and myself hope to move over soon with our little boy. She's a teacher and I'm hoping to get into a landscaping company.
She is always saying we doing it for the little one. So he can have security and a better future and while that is really a no brianer I keep reminding her that we aren't old and gone and doing it for ourselves is just as important. We still have a future and possibilities and new opportunities that may present themselves. So doing it for yourself is something that is super important to me.
Pretty much all your points are in line with ours. From experiencing new things, (some as simple as just trying new products is extremely exciting for me)

Mental health very important. If you don’t have a support structure and need others to keep you positive, NZ is far from family&friends, make sure you get involved with community,sport or socially. Remember even Auckland is small in comparison to most of the South African cities, there are much less people around, only really busy areas are Auckland cbd and Albany. Do your homework well. On the various social media groups there are groups for and against everything, read all the info you can get, but keep in mind you are not them, don’t allow others to influence your decision, make your own. Read the comments on the groups on why the people returned or are planning to return, there are groups just for this. Most other groups people are promoting only the good. Important to get a balanced perspective so you can make an informed decision, as said in vlog it can be a very expensive mistake. But for some it also a great decision. There are around 72000 South Africans in NZ, with 36000 in Auckland and 6000 in Waikato,wellington & Canterbury.

Hi Ashina, when we first came to NZ, we lived in a place called Whangarei which is also about 2 hours from Auckland city (you can have a look at our older videos). While it was really beautiful and we loved exploring there, it was a bit quiet for us. So it just depends on what type of lifestyle you want :)

I'm an SA expat who is based in Rwanda for a year now, possibly the safest and cleanest place ever, but the South African in me kinda misses the adrenalin of SA that everyday 'fight or flight', how this place has changed is i went from a SA alpha male to more of a Beta male, dont know if im making sense but something similar to how we play our rugby high adrenalin, fight, aggresion, killer mentality

Such a super video mental health aspect so important when a family member passes away in SA and during covid there are no goodbyes talking to a therapist really helps one through. Keep happy 😊
