Salute to the lady for hustling hard out there. She's a bus driver, runs a food stand & contributes to the radio station giving recipe tips sometimes at the beginning or end of her shift at the bus company. All she wants to do is make money. Very inspiring to anybody trying to create something against odds.

As a expatriate South African of thirty odd years my advice to all immigrants is to start life all over again in a small town and grow with the town, my wife arrived here two years ahead of me and was adopted by the small town folk who made it easy for us to adapt after coming from a big city, good luck and Welkom.

I've met and deal with ex pat South Africans on a regular basis for at least 30 years in business and sport, most are wealthy and white and despite the attempts at integration and acceptance of the Maori culture there are always undertones of racism in what they say about "back home" in terms of politics, other things like gardeners and cleaners are soooo expensive here

Its true. The South African who emigrate are usually the ones who are colonialist in thinking. And I'm glad that they're leaving because the rest of South Africa can integrate & build together.

We immigrated from the Eastern Cape. We are in our seventies and have not struggled to integrate at all. Best decision of our lives. The only advice we would give is this: when you leave South Africa, LEAVE IT BEHIND YOU and embrace your new country's culture. We love NZ, have no criticisms. We cannot wait to become full citizens. Wooly Zizi when you have personally experienced the horrors of lived in South Africa, you will have the right to make comments like this. The white people who did well there were those that studied, understood business, worked hard to make a decent income and invested wisely. Since the takeover of South Africa by black leaders, the country has fallen because the Communist driven, extremely corrupt ANC government have plundered everything they can. South Africa Airways has gone into liquidation while it's managers paid themselves millions! Municipalities have gone bankrupt. Hospitals are in serious financial difficulties. ESKOM (Electricity supply) is bankrupted. The list is endless. The government racist BEE (black economic empowerment) has all but blocked whites from getting jobs. As a result, the standards of life has plummeted. Crime of all kinds is completely out of control, the police are constantly being caught for corruption and in some parts of the country unemployment is as high as 90%. Farmers are being murdered daily and corrupt president Ramaphosa says its not happening. Apartheid ended many years ago and the 'majority' now run the show. They have had ample time and opportunity to build the country into a successful nation but they have failed dismally. The results speak for themselves. You go live there for a year and you will see for yourself that what is happening there has nothing to do with apartheid or white rule but everything to do with ignorance, low productivity and creeping Communism. Then you can comment in all honesty. And if you are an ex-South African living in NZ, I'd ask why did you not stay there?

If I got burgled three times in a row and got part of my family murdered, I wouldn't have stayed one second in whatever was my home country. I'd get the hell out of there. I understand them. Living with that kind of heavy security and worry all the time, is no way to live.
Also I can't see any political solution to what South Africa is facing today. When wealth is as strongly divided by ethnicity it is very hard to avoid populist politics ruling the day in any country. That will lead to bad government. South Africa is not alone in this. You see the same in South America where they jump from one populist government to another, never getting society on the right track.
I am sure things will work out in the end. I just don't think it will happen in a generation, which is what will matter for most people.

Marko Marko. Us older geezers remember that around 1970 when we were ready to have kids, the "experts" were telling us that it was "irresponsible" to have more than two children. If we had more than two children, we would use up all the available resources.
So could this have been a strategic damping down of white birth rates, as a way of implementing the Kalergi Plan?
So that the Turks, a temporarily secular, semi-westernized nation could re-infiltrate the eastern end of Europe, because Germany especially was running out of men due to WW II.
Re-infiltrate just as the Ottomans did in the 1600's, except more stealthily.
Europe, always the cheapskate, is now pumping a shitload of money (collected from working taxpayers) into the Muslim and African hordes. Unemployable, illiterate, useful only to disrupt civilization and create chaos, just like Kalergi planned.
      Your thoughts, please.

As someone with Afrikaaner connections, it is clear that refugee status IS NOT the answer. A mass exodus of white Africaaners IS NOT the solution.
It is totally impractical & dangerous. The best solution is for an independent Western Cape - the Cape Republic. ANC admitted that if a referendum was held the people would support it. The future of South Africa is autonamy among ethnic & tribal lines, i.e. KwaZulu-Natalia, Lesotho, Swaziland, etc.

@@NZSUBZERO The truth is the housing market is out of control and rental market is dire, I think that is something immigrants are not always aware of. There are not enough houses to go round, a lot of homes on the market are single glazed, mouldy, poorly insulated and should have been pulled down 20 years ago, yet prices are through the roof. These days a lot of homes go under the hammer with auctions won by overseas buyers at astronomical inflated prices which do not reflect NZ wages or the condition of the properties. It is difficult to get on the property ladder, also as a new immigrant, if you cannot bring a hefty down payment with you. New homes are constantly being built but cannot keep up with demand. Something else immigrants are probably not told at embassy info evenings is what it is like to rent here. Typically you need to apply online with 2 references and of course they prefer NZ references. It can be hard to get a good place with a responsible landlord/property agent. They are ridiculously overpriced for what you get. Expect to pay a lot for a modern build with double glazing and heatpump, in particular in Wgtn or Akl.Auckland prices are through the roof. Renting is tough, for the most part you cannot keep pets. You may get the home filthy with an overgrown, unkempt garden but have to leave it thoroughly cleaned, garden weeded and maintained. You have an inspection 4x year where the property agent photographs every room, the garage, exterior of the house. They want everything clean and tidy, lawns mowed, garden weeded eyc. It is very intrusive. You can find yourself without a home at short notice. The renter has little protection. The law entirely favours the landlord and many Kiwis have multiple houses as investments which they do not maintain or fix. Repairs are often not carried out. The law changed recently such that you are now permitted to hang up pictures but unlike other countries, you are not encouraged to think of a rental property as your home, there is next to no security that you can stay there longer term, there is little you can do to get a landlord to fix anything that needs repairs and the landlord can enter your rental anytime after giving 48 hours notice. I've lived in many countries and nowhere had such awful conditions for the renter. So it pays to keep all that in mind when weighing up a move.

I've gone to school and worked with a few South Africans. Both Afrikaans and English descent. They were all good folks, got along with the Maori and islanders just fine.
One thing to note. They had all left South Africa because of the crime.
The school age ones were amazed when they arrived that you could walk down the street by yourself in daylight or at all after dark, let alone by yourself after dark!
You just didn't do that where they lived.
Yes they did look sideways at our darker skinned people when they arrived, which I think is understandable, given their experiences.
But they came around pretty soon. Rugby had a lot to do with that. Gave people a common interest in which to get to know each other.

"they tend to cluster together" :-) yup there is some truth to that. But part of it is that any immigrant to a new home settles where they land, and newcomers are uncertain of what to expect so seek out ex-Saffers, and that becomes habitual. (We consciously sought to settle where we were not in a Saffer community, but chose wisely and many followed us instead.)
So few folk have been shot at outside of ZA, so we are commonly a little traumatised and find solace in mutual understanding. I am so 'bleery' happy that I have not had anyone shoot at me in the last 13 years. Auckland is home, it is truly where my heart is.
(And my wife who survived the stress of immigrating here with me is still my soulmate.)

As a Norwegian I understand what this means. Scandinavians, Dutch and Germans are more direct and matter of factly. There is less beating about the bush. I think it is also severely misunderstood by most anglo-saxons. They interpret it often as a form of rudeness or arrogance.
I've listened to people of different origin complain about dutch behavior in the Netherlands, while they did not realize my culture was exactly the same. So I got an insight into how foreigners view the germanic behavior. I must say in general it is very misunderstood. People assume entirely different intentions by germanic people than what was actually their intention.
It is a bit arrogant of anglo-saxons I think to assume that just because you are white, you must perceive the world the same way as them. Somehow they seem to have less issues with say Chinese, Japanese or Indians behaving entirely different.

Just name them, all over the world people tend to look for sortwise. The main issue is not that but the willing of immigrants to participate fully in their new country with its new mentality. @apokalypse 2016 The biggest problem is that White South Africans, because of apartheid could possibly viewed internationally as a White Supremist race of the Ku Klax Klan ideologies.
The Suidlanders is a White group in South Africa undergoing training in order to defend farm properties which is believed to be under attack by blacks in South Africa. It is not clear whether the attacks is criminal intent or politically motivated.
Neo Nazi Alt Right White supremist Islamophobia movement is an international movement.
The Suidlanders could possibly be seen connected to this movement by the European community.
Therefore i agree with you that it is quite possible that the European world may not want to grant political asylum to White South Africans based on apartheid's White supremist ideologies and the possible link to the Neo Nazi Alt Right White supremist Islamophobia terrorists organization.
What makes it worst for white South Africans is that Brenton Tarrent the shooter of the Christchurch massacre of Muslims is being investigated to a possible connection to the ALT Right movement.
If there is a Suidlanders link to this organization, it is definitely not helping White South Africans internationally
Ernst Roets of Afriforum is presently in USA lobbying for support to stop the expropriating of the farms and Simon Roche the leader of the Suidlanders is also there for. I leave that to your imagination.

Remember it was the Afrikaners who STARTED the whole apartheid system around 100 years ago. Now they move to NZ to escape the crime - which is a consequence of that racist apartheid system that the afrikaners started. Once in NZ - they stick to their enclaves. I bet they even have gated communities - just to keep themselves seperate. This is how apartheid started. Kiwis - you need to be careful that they do NOT take over the country.

vukken99 According to Goosen, research at RRL was focused on developing a “bacterial agent that would selectively kill black people.” Goosen stated that the project and the program had been described by South Africa’s then Surgeon General, Dr. Neil Knoble, as “the most important project for the country.”
Goosen himself had plenty of faith in the ability to create this type of weapon. In fact, he even claimed that an unknown European scientist had already developed a strain of bacteria capable of “only affecting, making sick, and killing pigmented people” as far back as the early 1980s.
“Under oath, Goosen went on to state that the government could have used such a weapon as a ‘negotiation back-up’ (to stay in power) and to ‘maintain peace’ (between local whites and blacks),” writes Singh.

There is no other perspective. The majority of emmigrants have already integrated into society. These people interviewed are already way past their prime and cannot integrate, thats why they are the only perspective. Most people integrate, get on with their lives and enjoy the opportunities of both the host country and the country they left, both of both worlds. Just because you emmigrate does not mean that you cannot go back and do business, when things get bad you then go back, simple.

I moved from an English speaking nation to country Australia 1969 when Aust was extremely different than my old home. We made a commitment to stay for min 2 years to give it a go. We knew many people that did the same as us that had gone back within 6 mth refusing to try. One of our neighbours didn't have electricity, hot water was heated on a wood stove, NO TV, NO telephone. Many households even in the closest city didn't have a telephone in their home. There was no fast food places. The only non english food was Chinese. I do NOT know any people that live within 500 km that had the same nationality that started with. We assimilated into Australian society. We LOVE IT !!!!! I have a slight accent still and peoples first guess now is Sth African. I get really angry as I detest the racism of white Sth Africans.
I feel sorry for New Zealand having a large influx of White South Africans that bring their racism with them (shown by women in the choir). Neither Australia or New Zealand want or need the racism they bring.

Different topic Ange, but laterally relevant. Here i must confess I did not think of that angle. I was focused on South Africans and their attitude when emigrating. But @@angevdw2887raises a good point re Australia's own history. At a museum in Cairns I saw a b&w, 20th century photograph of white australian 'hunters' with their feet on a pile of aboriginals, as early colonial settlers did throughout Africa with wildlife (and contemp hunters still do today). It was only in 1969 that aboriginals were removed from Australia's Fauna and Flora Act. Says a great deal about the country's DNA regarding race and tolerance. Happily it has been turning.
