My family and I moved over to Bay of Plenty in 2009. We had never been to NZ before and I always remember our removal man saying that in his experience more people make it work that way. Going somewhere on holiday and thinking to yourself “oh this would be a nice place to live” sets you up for disappointment. The rose coloured glasses soon wear off. We came expecting to work hard but have a much better life doing so...which is just what has happened. Yes we do miss family back in the UK but the internet has made it easy to talk with them. We’ve been back on holiday a couple of times now but can’t wait to get back on the plane and go HOME....this is my home, and I feel blessed to say it. I’m not going anywhere else now.

I was married once to a girl from San Diego that moved here with me and after 3-4 years she was whining quite a bit about how America is so much better. She went back to America for a 3 week holiday (without me) and she returned and said: "I cant believe how wrong my memories were; it sucked after getting used to NZ".
She never complained again (out loud anyway haha) and she embraced NZ a lot more openly and freely.

Point 2. That’s why Australia and NZ had the term Whinging Pom. But as one lovely older British gentleman said to me after a few beers “I spent 20 years complaining about NZ beer, went home for a holiday and their’s was worse”.We often remember things through rose coloured glasses.

@@ItsaDrama I think its funny how people forget that they weren't forced to move. They chose to leave their country and seem surprised when they aren't at home anymore!
Obviously this is different for refugees, but interestingly they aren't resentful and usually they make a success of their life.

One of the main reasons we left NZ was the appeal of seeing family after two years. Our original plan was for visits at Christmas but Covid put a stop to those. I think the sheer distance is a factor, especially for Brits. New Zealand is an incredible country and the people made us feel very welcome 😊

You guys give very good advice. Over the years, I've heard both positive and negative things about each of the five 'Anglosphere' countries (UK, US, Canada, Australia & NZ). While four of these countries were each colonized by the British and all speak their own dialects of English, they've all evolved into unique societies. I think that, regardless of which country a person emigrates to, how they adapt (or don't) depends entirely on their mindset upon arrival. If one has a positive attitude and is receptive to new people and ways of doing things, then the transition will almost certainly be successful. On the other hand, if one moves to a new country expecting it to essentially be the same as their home country, just in a different location, then the move will be a disaster, because the new country will inevitably pale in comparison. In short, openness to new experiences, realistic expectations and patience are the key elements.

Many ppl use or atleast used to use NZ as a backdoor to Aus when it was more diifficult to emigrate to Aus.
NZ is also a very expensive place to live, in most cases far more expensive than their home country and many ppl dont realise that. Housing affordability is another big problem and some ppl just dont take this things into acc.

I think one of the reasons is most of NZ employers are narrow minded when it comes to hiring staff. Most employers want only people with experience and that too they want NZ experience. Experience does not fall from the sky, one cannot buy experience with money and nobody is born with experience. Isn't it? Not everyone can work for free (volunteer) for experience. How is an individual expected to have work experience when he/she is not given an opportunity to gain experience? I am a NZ citizen settled in Auckland and trained and NZ registered Secondary school Science/Biology teacher with 3 years of full-time teaching experience overseas. Even after completed a Teaching Refresher course locally, I have been struggling to find a full-time teaching role here. Pathetic!!!

I worked with loads of British in Otago when I was young,I think one of the biggest reasons for returning to the UK is the sudden realisation that they couldn't get a cheap flight to another country that would only take an hour or two. They didn't comprehend the isolation that makes NZ what it is....imagine if it was off the coast of Europe how different it would be. I came to the UK in 2004 with the intention of coming back to NZ every couple of years,I've been back once in 17 years lol,so it works both ways. Maybe one day I'll come back to NZ,but the reasons people move in the first place, plays a big part in why it works or doesn't whatever the case may be. I think family is the other big reason, family support can be a big part of people lives that can't easily me measured, until its not there. I do miss my family in NZ but I've always been very independent so its never been an issue for me,but I recognise many people aren't like that.

    • @ItsaDrama
      @ItsaDrama  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Great insight, thanks so much for sharing. Yes, that was our thought too...that we’d return every couple of years... then when you see the price of flights and the fact that you need at least 3 weeks to make it worthwhile it is quite tricky. Thanks so much for watching!

The real reason is easy. To be a true Kiwi you must get a long nose and dig about in leaf-mould for worms with it, at night. 30% find that process painful--especially the long nose bit, because surgical stretching is needed. And not everyone likes worms. Even from Watties. (30% did not find any of that amusing).

To illustrate about moving…A family walking thru the park saw an elderly chap sitting on the park bench. The family who were thinking of shifting to the area asked him “What are the people like here?” The elderly chap asked “What is it like where you came from?” The family answered “ Oh they are friendly, kind etc”The gentleman replied”That’s what they are like here”
A little while later another family walking thru the park asked the gentlemen “What are the people like here?” The gentleman asked “What are they like where you’ve come from?” The family.said “Oh their terrible, you can’t trust them,Not kind or generous at all” The gentleman replied “That’s what they are like here” Moral of the story,,,,It’s all in your attitude positivity or negativity ITS YOUR CHOICE.You May not change people but you can change yourself in the way you view things.
When we immagrated 60 years ago from Scotland,it was the same attitude “Back in the UK,When we were in England” It was very hard to here that as we were trying to settle in.My father ended up saying “If it’s so good back there,go home”The winging Pom was definitely the attitude back then.❤

The rsa is super here. I belong to a pool team and play snooker. We have some darts teams as well. Drinks are cheaper than a traditional pub, but it's very much got the feel of a "local", you get to know the regulars. The only thing I'm thinking about for easter is that the rsa will be closed on Friday and what will I do without my pool games.
We have a lot of games with other rsa teams and its just a really nice community.
To be fair I expected there to not really be a culture shock in England, but my kids were almost shell shocked. Being indoors all the time (winter), not being able to just pop down the shops with bare feet. Ohh and all the kids at their schools thinking they were australians.

I'm a born Kiwi and I prefer England now. I lived there in rural Somerset for 3 years 2018 - 2020 came back during covid for family reasons and still miss it. When my aging pets pass I am going back lol. What I miss is the accesibility to country walks, the ability to walk out your door and accross fields and droves, and farmland. I just loved that. No opportunity to do that here. NZ has become so expensive, I know it has eveywhere but NZ housing and food prices are over the top. I grew up here when it was laid back and cheap and easy living. It's not like that now. I guess I should add my parents are English so I have an English passport.

As a New Zealander, I think you are spot on. It's generic to any country you move to, but because NZ is an English speaking colony of the UK, some Brits expect it to be the same. I left NZ and settled in Japan for 20 years. Moving to Japan meant that I didn't expect anything to be the same. But I still found many people complaining that it wasn't the same as 'home'.

    • @ItsaDrama
      @ItsaDrama  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

It's so funny you should mention Japan John, Brian and I were talking about just that last night. How if you moved to Japan you would expect things to be different and you would embrace it for what it is. As you say, because they speak English here it's almost expected (by some) that things will be the same. And then they get upset when they're not. On another topic, we lOVED Japan. such a beautiful country. In a lot of ways, it reminded us of NZ. the calm and the understatedness. I would love to hear more about your life there! Thanks for listening John 😊

I think the main thing when moving to any country is to research as much as you can. Research job's, price's, culture and lifestyle. Think about the reason for your move and research if it's even possible. Think about what you enjoy doing and see if you can still do it there. You shouldn't go to a historical village for a holiday if you only enjoy clubbing and city life, and then complain that there's nothing to do like it's the village's fault.

As a 4th Generation Pakeha Kiwi who has travelled around the world! I loved this, and it is so true! I have subscribed. I think the biggest problem is the distance; my ancestors came here on a sailing ship. There was no Suez Cannel, nor Panama Cannel, it took 3 and a half months! Now we moan about a 48 hour journey!
But there is something psychological about the separation from your family!
But too many people make the mistake of thinking Auckland is the Bees Knees! AS a Kiwi who has lived in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and Invercargill and the worst place I lived in was Auckland! Too many Immigrants go to Auckland, NOT to many Kiwi born New Zealanders live in Auckland! And it rains a lot!
The South Island is the best Island!

It depends on what country you have moved from to New Zealand AND what you are used too. I moved from The UK to New Zealand & the two biggest things that hit me was the poor choice of virtually everything mainly food and clothes & how expensive food Is. After a couple of years I moved to Australia & almost instantly It was like being back in The UK, so much choice, variety and reasonable prices, not to mention the Aussies are certainly more in sync with the British humour than the Kiwi's are. I've not long returned to New Zealand (for personal & family reasons) after a few years and nothing has really changed, everythings still very expensive & unless you have a high-paying job youre just about surviving. Sadly it's what they call a "Low Wage Economy" so many many people are living from paycheck to paycheck. I'll always love New Zealand but as soon as all these "Lockdowns" are over i'm on the next flight back to Australia. This is just my own personal experience, I know It's different for everyone.

I'm going to move back to NZ in a year or two, after things here settle down for me, and I feel I can move back. I'm in the UK. Technically I'm not a foreigner here, because my parents are English, but you're right, but in reverse. The UK initially did feel like a foreign country. And as to the idyllic perceptions of NZ. I remember being assesed by a doctor here who talked to me about how wonderful she thought NZ was, and her friend, who lives in NZ telling her that the streets in NZ were so clean. NZ does have clean streets, but there is still plenty of litter around, just like in the UK. So yes there is an idyllic impression of what it's like. I find it interesting how someone who moves to NZ and settles down there sees things. It often reveals things about your own country you didn't realise existed.

Canadians perspective. Lived here for a year in 2015-2016 in my early 20's. I had to go home to finish my schooling and had intentions of going back but life happened and that's not how things worked out. The weather and scenery are absolutely unmatched but I do remember my quality of life being quite down. I was working the same profession I had in Canada and earning $50,000.00 NZD yearly less.. a HUGE pay cut.
It all depends on where you come from as to what your experience may be but you definitely have a much higher ceiling in Canada. New Zealand would be better if you were going with a lot of money or if you had no intention of going back to your home country. I say that because the NZD is also a weak currency. You'd lose 20% of your savings just for going back to Canada.
I really hope one day I come across a ton of money cause I'd love to go there permanently and not struggle!

But still more people will be choosing to call New Zealand home, there are people who are getting tired of their home country and wanting to go somewhere else, you know Americans will be doing this from what is going on in the USA right now, I know there’s lots of people who are so done with America now, and were already concerned with other things with America before covid started. Their are Kiwi, Samoans , Tongans and Fijians living over there but you will get to know our cultures more here or if you go to the islands. It could be rather difficult to break a Brit's armour but once you did you have a friend for life. Rather difficult on the bus, at a bus stop, park, garden enter, gym. My closest food and Petro is 15 min away. I drive but feel concerned about driving in NZ. I want lazy days with great views. A monthly rental would be great. I fancy the Taupo lake area or Auckland area. I do love performing arts theatre and dog shows. As a 72 yr old I can afford to live anywhere. I do not want to put down the over 2 million dollars a visa would cost me. I will not be holding a job. Do education visas include elderly amateur scientist?? Would love to see the mountains and the water together. I do not swim. I like cooking. Don’t need restaurants. Where might be a great place for me??? What services come to your door? Grocery delivery? RX delivery? Restaurant delivery? Mobile Mani/pedi? I would not be bringing anything but 1 suitcase and my meds. Would it be easy to get a doctor visit ? Would doctors prescribe for a foreigner? Is a car necessary?

Interesting points and I'm glad it's worked out for you guys. For me personally it's 'lifestyle' vs 'quality of life'. The lifestyle, access to beaches, weather is great but for me compared to the UK the cost of living and what you get for it is a joke. Also working here is a constant battle due to the tall poppy syndrome. Been here 15 years, worked in various positions in differing industries and they've all been hell, battling with ego's and incompetence and due to the passive agressive attitude that seems to dominate you can't address your problems with employers, they are happy to talk about you but not to you.
But the main thing that is sending us home is how frankly depressing this country is, baby murders, domestic violence, armed gangs, teen suicides, drink, drugs, dangerous driving... and nobody seems to care.
It's been an interesting experience and I came here with a positive mindset but have pretty much had my soul sucked dry by this place and my quality of life was far superior living in a small town in North Yorkshire, which is where I'm returning to. I know people tell me that the UK has changed but I was there a few years and couldn't believe how much happier and more positive people were over there compared to NZ.

I never think nz is dirt cheap. In fact meat is cheap. House is cheap. Better air and blue sky.

Think many New Zealanders want to leave New Zealand in a heartbeat if they had finances and resources to move elsewhere many want to leave either for Australia or Europe and beyond.
Crime rates gone though the roof taxes are at insane levels generally in $300-$500 per a week hand over to the government to do what exactly ? It isn't going to places that need the most like healthcare or our infrastructure it went to gangsters 2.7million dollars worth😂
In general people are sick of hearing " we know people doing it tough" do absolutely nothing with the housing crisis with cost of buying services and goods.
If it was up to me I'll be out of this country in heartbeat and move to a country that gives a damn about it's citizens safety law and order and wanting people to actually get ahead not only getting a paycheck just to get by even working full-time you may not be able to pay for trips or holidaying which is a true reality for many many workers that I've spoken to.
This country is busted more than broke we are well and truly screwed.
