    The very best part of Rodney's awesome contibution to that memorial concert was his public acknowledgement of Vivian Distin, Johnny Cash's first wife and mother of his four daughters. It was shamefully cut from the broadcast but can be seen in the documentary film, My Darling Vivian. Rodney Crowell was the ONLY person who mentioned her, according to that film, and she was sitting in the audience. Respect to Rodney.

      Johnny's bass player mentioned her name when he told the story of them all going to his house when he was trying to learn to play bass.

      I wish they would have shown that part. I'd seen the documentary on Vivian with their daughters, and they said they cut his tribute to out of the final cut. That was so unfair. She went through so much, and still loved him.

      @clincoln8835 I just finished watching it, and was looking for this and hoping they'd show the part where he dedicated the song to her. It was so upsetting the way they portrayed her in the movie. I wish she would have lived longer, but I'm glad she didn't have to suffer another degredation.

    I liked how he gave a tribute to Vivian Cash Distin and thanking her (she was in the audience) for being a wonderful grandma to his daughters with Roseanne Cash. This was on the "My Darling Vivian" documentary.

    It's appalling that they cut out his dedication of this song to Ms. Vivan, Johnny's first wife. I'm glad they featured it in the documentary, "My Darling Vivian."

    RC and RC made such a sweet and super talented couple, I was sad they split up, but it was a big consolation that they never stopped being friends. And that they were both able to find happiness with new mates.

    They left out the most awesome sweetest part where Rodney talks about Cash's awesome first wife Vivian. The Documentary, My Darling Vivian, was great. I met Rodney once and he was so sweet. You can also read Vivian's book I Walked The Line.

    • @leepowers8944
      @leepowers8944 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      More than the melody (which both Johnny and Bob took from a Paul Clayton song which itself was taken from an earlier public domain song called Who’s Gonna Buy You Chickens When I’m Gone). The entire last verse of this version is word for word Dylan’s.

    • @sergeantmasson3669
      @sergeantmasson3669 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@leepowers8944 Bob Dylan wrote "Don't think twice, it's alright" song in 1962. Johnny wrote this adapted version with Bob Dylan's permission. BTW, they were very close friends. "Who's Gonna Buy You Chickens When I'm Gone" was an old folk song and public domain. Clayton's record company tried to sue Johnny Cash but lost. Paul Clayton used the song to write "Who's Gonna Buy You Ribbons When I'm Gone." Clayton would later commit suicide.

    I remember this when it was on TV. I didn't remember the song Rodney sang though, I was thinking too hard trying to remember how he described the meeting with Johnny to pay much attention to what he sang. I remember, one of these tributes thinking that the last song Johnny sang was Walk The Line at the end. And someone else was in tears. Everyone sang the song with Johnny.

    Hi "spurs": Rodney Crowell performs a compilation of two songs in this tribute to Cash: "Understand Your Man" and "Don't Think Twice". The first was written by Cash (probably in reference to his first wife Vivian when they were having marital problems) and the second written by Bob Dylan and recorded by Cash on the Orange Blossom Special album. Crowell does a superb job here.

      it was quoted in the 90s they had split due to fighting and alcohol & drugs. She was very much in love with Rodney regardless how much abuse was there. If you notices they both wrote their songs of each other .... so much love & compassion with each other. Today they are back to making music together again and with a great friendship rebuilt after all that hurt in the past. I truely believe they love each other. John Paul White been a great trooper in all this. He & Rosanne have a great marriage & great respect for each other.

      Creature Friend, Rodney combined two songs, the second being written by Dylan, though Cash did perform it (Don't Think Twice, It's Alright). Rodney, undoubtedly, heard the similarities between Dylan's song and Understand Your Man (written by Cash). Nice tribute to Cash, I think, since he recorded both songs.
      Dylan's song was a derivative of a traditional song "Who's Gonna Buy Your Chickens When I'm Gone". So in a sense, both artists 'borrowed' the tune, but Dylan was first!
