Just found this due to Willie Nelson releasing it. I have to tell you I love me some Rodney Crowell and some Willie Nelson! Both versions are beautiful.
Rodney had been writing hits as a contract writer and playing in Emmylou Harris' Hot Band years before Willie recorded any of Rodney's work. As for Townes, he was another product of the Emmylou machine of the early 70s. He was a legend among the Nashville and Texas songwriters from the early '70s on.
Great song! My son just married a Maria so the song real came at a special time for my family. And the fact you and Willie worked together on this song is the best memory. This song will not leave your mind lyrics and melody is what I like in my life and my mind. Thank you for your professionalism.
I saw these 2 guys last night in Ponte Vedra. It was a great show and I never heard the mandolin player make any mistakes. The tone was great. They had another guy on acoustic lead and it sounded full and fabulous. I never missed bass and drums for a single minute.
I heard Willy sing it first and it was just way out of character for him! Glad my cousin is a songwriter and musician he told me who wrote this song 👍🤠
Maybe?...Border Patrol agents Ignacio “Nacho” Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean were involved in an incident where they fired their service pistols at a fleeing illegal alien drug smuggler near the United States-Mexico border. This event led to their arrest, trial, and subsequent conviction for shooting the suspect and obstructing justice by defacing the crime scene. They were sentenced to 11 and 12 years in prison, respectively, but their sentences were later commuted by President Bush in 2009 and they were granted full pardons by President Trump in 2020 ~ An American in Korea 🇰🇷
Mandolin player shat all over this tune at the end. If you’re gonna make an interest then make sure you’ve got your shit together! Great song though. Lovely.
And yet he endorsed Biden in 2020 and the party that has fought Texas every step of the way… I wonder if his cover represents a change of heart, or simply an opportunity to sing such a moving song.
@@daviddickinson1993 thank God he hasn't had a change of heart. His views are still great. Blue Wave all the way He's just doing this cuz he likes Rodney their old friends.
@@truckerkevthepaidtourist I take it you have a bifurcated brain. If Willie is that blue, it’s pretty disingenuous to sing a song about the plight of men who work on a border the left pretends doesn’t exist. No border patrol in your family? Then why give a shit, right?
❤ This is great story telling beautifully done. I heard Willie Nelson do this from his new album and thought it was brilliant. I had to see who wrote it and performed it and it blows you away. I loved both versions. But if you write songs and stories like this you really have to work to screw it up. Absolute corker. That means bloody brilliant in case a few U. S. boys take offence. Just fantastic.

Same here, saw Willie Nelson's youtube and had to find out more. Great song, strong and straight forward.
Rodney's newest album is good, bluesy. Chicago Sessions. Enjoy! He covers a townes tune on it, too.
Great song wrighter, not enough credit in my opinion.
Willie brought attention to Rodney and to Townes and so many songwriters

Heard the Willie version first. Crazy good song!
What an amazing story teller. Love me some Rodney Crowell
Rodney Crowell is a Global Treasure / Exceptional Human ❤️❤️❤️
Rodney Crowell is a regular visitor to Ireland...he is a great singer and musician.....
Ireland has a border
Thanks Rodney, so well said, only way to add to it would be to have Emmy Lou put some vocal harmonies on it.
Thank you for this Rodney- we have forgotten these people with all that's going on these days.
Whoa..solid songwriting...seriously awesome the way he brings such visuals and emotion to his lyrics. Love this!!
Gently powerful and moving on a level that is submerged in many people.

Willie's version is good but you realize that Rodney wrote it and performed it first, right?

: ) looking back I don't know why I felt qualified to critique the mandolin player... never played a mandolin. But it was a great show.
That is such a true and heavy song god bless those at the border❤

The consummate storyteller.
Aw c'mon, a credit for the mando player please! (Compelling song Rodney!)
Good ol Houston boy right there!
Acoustic Motel, looks familiar, do other artists record there ? Great going Jack !
another thumbsup
I can imagine Joe Ely singing this song. A Ely style ballad. Lets see if Joe Ely does a cover version too.😄
Great song 🎵 Rodney !
Is that a OLD SILVERTONE guitar
I heard Willy sing it first and it was just way out of character for him! Glad my cousin is a songwriter and musician he told me who wrote this song 👍🤠

nice
Who are the two people who went to Federal prison he sings of?

fire that mandolin player! 4 mistakes in one solo. Get John Jorgenson for this performance ( just like on the album)
He is fantastic fiddler with the voice of an angel.
Also 2 octave strings out of tune.
Lot of pressure walking in like that. He wasn't too shabby
zowies that good

Who's the guy who comes in on the guitar? Is that L.R. Baggs?

Is this Willie Nelson's song?
no
No- Rodney Crowell wrote it and put it out 5 years ago.

Great idea, she enhances, and enchants every thing she does, and whoever she works with just ices the cake every time.
