Thanks for the infor been using marvel mystery oil for years to free up engines. My dad used it on our 1950 Oldsmobile we both tore down and rebuilt back in 1961 when I was 11 yrs old. I’m here for the same reason. My great grandfather’s nova has been sitting for about 10 years so I hope to start it up without it seizing up. The oil has likely settled to the bottom so I need to be careful.
I have a 1983 Mercury Marquis with a 6-200 and C-5 trans. I drive it everyday! I rebuilt the engine. It runs good! I think Ford last came out with the 6-200 in '83.
84 was the last year. For 85 and 86, they sold the 3.8 V6.

Awesome engines I work at a ski mountain and we have ford 200 l6 in a bunch of old snowcats they are bulletproof we also have a couple as pony motors on ski lifts 3/4 of a mile long don’t under estimate tholse little work horses. They don’t make stuff like that anymore.

Thanks for the good info, I have a 97 Ford F150, 5.4 , fuel injected, When i bought it, I was told when he parked it the only issue was with 4x4, that with new battery, well didnt start, but seems to me, if i follow the process in this video, i believe it will start. BTW, the truck sat for about 4 years, wish me luck, i will post a comment when i get the motor to turn over.

This is the second video I watched... They are very good and spot on with how I learned. However, I'd like to find a video that did not turn over by hand as easily. I just can't seem to get my V-Twin to break free. I'll keep looking. Good Job!
I'd recomment getting a $15 borescope from Amazon to check the cylinders. You may have another issue.
Watch ike itll be fine videos on old car breaking free he put a few things in the cylinder to break free then went to flywheel and used prybar to move flywheel back and forth

Interesting about the oil. I picked up a used engine from a junk yard, and when I pulled the dipstick the oil looked clean. Thinking I was safe, I installed a flywheel and starter motor to spin the engine on my stand. However, once I started spinning the engine, the oil that pumped out of the cam spray bar was black. Apparently, the junk had settled to the bottom of the pan low enough to not show on the dipstick.
We would always want to pull the pan on an engine that sits for a while. We have also done the very thing you did and were chomped on butt by the "junk in the sump".
When you use marvels mystery oil does it pass to the oil pan. Thank you

My Grandfather died in 1957. He was sent to Detroit in 1918 to learn to be a Ford trained mechanic. He eventually became a machinist in Elmira, NY, but he always worked on people's cars in his garage in the evenings. When he died, Grandma pretty much closed up the garage, but left most of the things as they were when Grandpa was alive. I remember as a kid exploring the garage and playing the big cathedral radio overhead in the tool room. The one thing I remember most, is that there was a can of Marvel Mystery oil in almost every corner of the shop. Grandpa really believed in that stuff.

I have a 1966 Chevy c10 motor has been changed to a small block looks like a 305 or a 327 I have fire to the distributior but no fire at the plug can you please help the motor spend good
I have a 1978 Ford courier, 2.3, The control module, went out, according to my mechanic, I can not find the part anywhere, it's obsolete. Is there anyway to adapt something else? The truck has been in the shop for six months.
You might try using the module for the 1978 Fairmont with the 2.3 Liter four.

i have a 1950 chevrolet 3100 truck with a 235 engine. have problem with no oil getting to top of rockers. checked all lines they are clear. removed oil pan test oil pump working but noticed oil going to oil pan looked at the oil distributor valve looks ok. only get oil to top when i plug off the oil distributor valve and the pressure gauge port. then i get oil to main bearings and to the rockers what could be wrong , any information would be helpful, thanks.
Thanks for the video. I just started my first car project. It's sat a long time. Rats had their way with ignition wiring. Your video really helped me visualize basic electrical needs of an engine to start. However, I'm not sure how you brought volts to the coil. Can you lend some wisdom?
There should be a wire that comes out through the firewall going to the coil. Recommend looking in the net for your cars wiring diagram, this will help.

I just got a 65 Falcon. Was sitting for 33 years! Put some oil down the spark plug holes. The engine turns, to a certain degree, pushing the fan. So I don't think it's seized.
Trying to rotate the engine with the starter, but it's just clicking. Charging up a battery right now. Might have to use the engine start feature on my battery charger to get it to turn the engine over. Not trying to start it now, Just want to see if it will turn, and get the oil on the pistons. We recommend Marvel or diesel in the cylinders and letting it sit for a couple days. try a slow rotation forward and backward. Be patent, keep that up until you get free rotation. IF you don't get free rotation you may need to pull the heads.
If your starter motor only clicks, better pull it, and bring it to someone that rebuilds them, or replace it with a new one and get a new warranty on the starter at the same time.
Anytime an engine has been sitting for a long time with used oil in it, better either change the oil and or replace the oil pan gasket. Also if any vehicle has been sitting for a long time, expect the inside of the gas tank to be trashed, maybe the brass float has been eaten up by any old fuel left in the tank too.
I used transmission fluid on my Fairlane. The MMO might have been less expensive. :(
dont forget to gap the points clean them first . set the gap on the high point of the distributor shaft not the low lol
How does one insure the MMO gets around the rings on a v-configuration block? An in-line engine (if the cylinders are vertical) can get the MMO to distribute around the rings evenly. I’m gonna do this on a Chrysler 5.9 liter not cranked for 10 years. Perhaps using a spray nozzle inside the combustion chamber might help.
Good point. A lot of times, the issues are on the low side of the Vee where fuel could have pooled. If it is stuck enough that it won't move without Marvel Mystery Oil I tend to be one to want to yank the heads and take a peek.
Do you pour that marvel stuff into each cylinder head? Or just one sparkplug hole? You didn't mention that part.

The objective is to lubricate the dry cylinder walls and break loose the rings from the walls prior to turning the engine over.

I was wondering if I hadn't start up my 05 acura rsx type s for about 10 years will it start up if I flush out all old liquids and check wirings and electrics will it start ???!!??
The flush of old gas is the key. If it didn't have electrical issues, you should be good to go with fresh fluids and gas. You will probably need to replace the radiator and maybe the heater core as those will build sediment. Just watch the temp gauge.

Help! Acquired ‘95 fleetwood rv with Ford 350. Sat after 34k miles under tree for 20 years. Figured out how to repair most cabin rv needs but never touched an engine except for extreme basics like dilutes and fluids. Replaced two batteries in engine compartment and topped off fluids abd a few gallons gas and it’s turning over just not holding. I figure gunked up and needing new filters? Any links or advise welcome. Trying to get safely started up to relocate nearby 2-3 miles tops ASAP. Once parked, then I can spend more time on proper detailed maintenance and repairs . I’m down for the challenge. Mostly I’m worried about harming engine with no working knowledge and hoping for info on any major concerns for engine damage without flushing replacing any old fuses and wires plugs or whatever. Yup such a novice don’t even have the language down! Any info will help! Thx ya’ll!!!

Oil is not as much an issue as the gas will be. That said we'd recommend both to check for any water in the oil, if the oil has water in it. you know you have bigger fish to fry. The fuel might run OK with fresh on top of the old but why risk it?

I have 2, 82 Dodge Rampages that haven't been started in about 5 years. The one has always started easily in the past but lately will only start with starting fluid then won't stay running. I put fuel stabilizer in the tank at the beginning but I suspect it's long since worn out and I need to replace the gas and clean the tank. I'm trying to get them running good so I can sell them and use the money to fix up another vehicle I have.

It is worth a shot. Same rules apply.
you also had a rod to the throttle the 2nd time you attempted to fire it thus adding air to lean out the pure ether to acceptable A/F ratio. Cold carb engines usually require an initial higher rpm to overcome lack of manifold heat to maintain the mixture from carb base to the cylinder .. Compression testing with all the plugs out is both easier on the starter - battery and if there is a bad head gasket will show low PSI in adjacent cylinders... your two low cylinders could be a head gasket where compression is transferring and held by the other cylinder. If the plugs are out then air in one cylinder through the head gasket is vented to atmosphere instead of being retained.
+10susan10 Good points! We'll be digging in a little bit more this week. All cylinders are now up at roughly 150 psi.
+AutoRestoMod Muscle Car Resto and Modifications amazing what a little oil and flexing various parts by cranking the engine over will do... good news on the 150 psi... that and how clean the rockers & shaft, inside of valve cover you may get more than your $150 for that engine.. Don't know how many miles it shows on the odometer but that cleanliness would make me suspect it possibly had a valve job not (running hours) long ago. Also the valve cover gasket looked neoprene not factory cork....
Sadly she has a MASSIVE rod knock on six. We're going to do a tear down on video and see if it can be fixed. But that will be a few weeks out.

Wish I would have seen this a couple months ago because I bought an 95 f150 4.9 that has been setting for years and it ran for about ten minutes and it started running really choppy and has set since has about 20lbs of compression on each cylinder

After a long delay I finally have a 67 Tbird that I purchased. It sat for 40 years! Fuel question. None of the videos I found talk about fuel lines. I have a new tank and sending unit (not messing with the old tank despite watching you tank video). I cannot find new direct replacement fuel lines for a 67 Tbird, looked everywhere. Is there a way to clean the existing lines? If not is the only option to fabricate new ones on my own with raw materials? Thanks, George
Sadly the lines aren't out there yet. Best bet would be to get raw materials and make your own for right now. Either staineless (harder to bend) or mild steel would work. Honestly, I would use the mild steel for my first attempt at bending.

Why do you turn the engine over counterclockwise? I thought you should only turn an engine clockwise.
Good eye Bob. Yes, you should, but it really won't hurt it to rotate backwards. We did this because the second take with correct rotation was not as clear audio wise when we go it to post. Cam's shirt was rustling the mic and made it hard to listen to...

Put transmission fluid in the cylinders and hook up a engine starter to the battery. Spin it around.
Dad taught me motors. Keep it simple. Fuel and spark and air to breathe make any combustion engine run. Check all fuel systym and and ignition spark . Simple really

So why did you leave the spark plugs on while doing the compression test? It's better too have all the plugs removed, the carburetor open too full throttle to get the engine spinning over fast and pull in air for accurate readings.
Becasue we wanted to see what it would do under normal run conditions.
what's happened to the ranchero?
Due to some unforeseen family stuff we have had to push it back a bit. Our hours of work have been pretty heavily cut.
This looks like a useful video, it is a shame you do not have CC closed captions. I lost my hearing during the Vietnam War and really need the closed captions to be able to understand the video. TH-cam can self generate these.

Machine oil won't hurt anything. It will smoke on startup but burns up quickly.
