Just found this. Thanks, Ollie. I am from Sarawak, Malaysia and have done extensive research on its history. I discovered 6 early Melayu Kingdoms in what is Sarawak now, vis. Negeri Santubong (300BC), Negeri Samarahan (1300), Kalaka (1368), Malanau (1368), Negeri Saribas (1450) and Negeri Banting (1700). I hope you will improve your digital interactive historical map of Melayu Archipelago.
Very well done, sir! :) Been a fan of your works for quite a while now, and I'm very happy seeing that you finally make a quite complete history of the Nusantara (that's how we usually call it here in Indonesia). Although I'd like to add some informations here: - Aceh never ruled the land of Batak (west of Lake Toba). They only controlled the western coasts, notably Singkil and Barus. The Bataks also have their own, succesive kingdoms (Hatorusan, Bakkara). - Pagaruyung once ruled Siak, Kampar and Indragiri in Riau, which they got in 1411 after a 2 years war with Majapahit. But those regions would soon lost to the Malaccans which invaded them in 1458. Pagaruyung also faced a civil war once, from 1514 to 1524. - Srivijaya becomes a vassal state of Dharmasraya by 1088, before fully controlled in 1183. The former territories of Srivijaya (Tambralinga included) would later met the same fate, conquered by Dharmasraya. Yes, Dharmasraya was a large empire until the Singhasarian invasion in the 13th century. This is also the most possible reason why the name of Srivijaya never mentioned in Nagarakretagama. By the time Majapahit invaded South Sumatra, they never face a kingdom named Srivijaya, but it was Palembang instead. - There are two kingdoms named Kutai. First, the ancient Kutai Martadipura which appeared in the 4th century (350 as an embryonic civilization, become fully civilized by 400 thanks to Hindu traders from India); and Kutai Kartanegara (a Hindu state, later evolved into a sultanate) which you showed here. The former would later be conquered by the latter in 1605. - There's a Malay state that once ruled a big portion of Borneo in the 17th century. It's the Sultanate of Banjar (1520-1860). It claimed to control a vast region from Sambas in the west, down to Sukadana and Tanjungpura, up to Berau in the northeast. - Kalinyamat only ruled the island of Muria (today's Jepara) and Bawean. Regions in the east of Pajang were divided into small city-states ruled by independent adipatis (dukes) up till Mataram's invasion. - The Moluccan sultanates were not just Ternate and Tidore. There are two more named Bacan and Jailolo. These four wage war on each other, fighting for influence and territories on the whole Spice Islands. For a brief time in the 14th century, they stopped the war and agreed to make peace. Together, they created a union named Moloku Kie Raha ("Brotherhood of the Four Mountain Rulers"), somewhat similar to today's EU and ASEAN. - Tidore once ruled the Raja Ampat islands and the coasts of Bird's Head Peninsula in Papua. According to a note from the Sonyine Malige Museum in Soasiu (the official museum of the Tidore Sultanate), the Sultan sends a succesful expedition led by Kapitan Gurabesi (a native Papuan from Biak) to conquer the said territories in 1495 (for the Raja Ampats) and 1522 (for the Vogelkop). There are a few others, but right now I only can remember those. I hope they're useful for you. Believe me, studying the history of the Malay Archipelago (especially Indonesia) could give you a headache. Almost every island has their own kingdoms, and it's usually more than two. And every kingdom has their own history. It's somewhat complicated. There's too many kingdoms here. xD But overall, I appreciate your hard work on this animated history map. Truly amazing. :) ~ Comes from a Javanese, an Indonesian, a history mapping enthusiast, and a huge fan of your maps. :>
I'll add a little bit to this info for the Malay Peninsula too: - Old Kedah (or Kadaram) was there in the Kedah state of Malaysia at least from 6th century BCE. It's contemporary with the Bujang Valley Culture. - Before 6th century CE, Kingdom of Funan has a colony kingdom, Tanah Merah, in what is now Kelantan state in Malaysia. I guess you can say they coexist with Tambralinga. Drawing borders between them two can be hard though because the concept of border in these old kingdoms are not like the nationstate border of today
Yep, Tanah Merah is Chi Tu. Chi Tu is the name given by the Chinese though. I prefer using the local name because the Tanah Merah area still exist until today, so at least people who are interested don't have to guess where the site of Chi Tu was.
I think Japanese empire shouldn't be that large. It was a swift attack, they concentrated to control the regions with rich resources, places with food sources, and infrastructures. So places like central Borneo were left intact. First that they must faced Dayak people in deep jungle, two, there wasn't much gain in return. I also believe that central Papua left intact, they only control the beach and some islands for defense. I don't have sources for this, i heard this from my friend. I found it quite logical.
they are indeed part of Malay Archipelago. But if you widen the term of Malay-Austronesia, they are everywhere from Madagaskar, Aoterea(NZ), all Polynesian/Melanesian islands in Pacific Ocean to Hawaii and Rapanui. Our language are kinda the same, and no we have no related to the Thai,Burmese or Vietnamese. Just like Faeroe Island and Iceland that have almost identical language to the Old Norse, the Polynesian/Melanesian as well as Malagasy have some words from Old Malay language.
Great video! I always found Indonesian history to be fascinating. A cool follow up could be a video on the Polynesian expansion throughout the Pacific Islands. Or perhaps the expansion of Austronesian languages out of Taiwan similar to your Indo-European video.
As an Indonesian myself I say this is a great though not perfect job! Thanks so much @Ollie Bye we need things like these to get ppl talking bout history again :D
Well he left out a lot of eastern Indonesia until Tidore. There's sooo much more there than what's here. And yes, he could have included southern Philippines here because there is an interconnected history between Mindanao - Sabah/Brunei - Maluku. Otherwise Western Indonesia (Java-Sumatra-Borneo) is pretty much correct @Muhammad Azim
Noeswantra Nah, he should included the whole Philippines. We're still like you guys even though we don't speak Malay. Our languages are related though.
@@vanderpraast4938 yeah, it's weird to think that if the dutch took the malaysian peninsula too and for some reason the british just handed it to them or maybe the dutch didn't lose it in the first place, then it'd probably be a part of Indonesia. I'd probably be spell it "color" Instead of "colour". KL won't be as developed if it's not the capitol of indonesia. No KL tower and no KLCC.
acually there is a lot of kingdom that not showed on the video like banjarmasin sultanate, sambas sultanate, kotawaringin sultanete, well there is too many kingdom in malay archipelago even i cannot explain it all, i appreciate for you to make this video it's awesome
Awesome video (as always). The only issue I have is with some of the color choices. First, the yellow color scheme of Kediri, Singhasari, Majapahit, etc. is a little too close to the small country color (making them look like part of their countries). Second, the colors of the Malacca Sultanate and Portuguese Empire being the same makes 2:40 look like the Malacca Sultanate turned into the Portuguese Empire (like the Kediri to Singhasari transition at 1:42). Again, just minor complaints to an excellent video.
Thank you for these awesome youtube videos!! I observed that around 1870s, the region marked as deli sultanate in sumatra should have been jambi sultanate. Deli sultanate is actually west of siak sultanate adjacent to aceh sultanate. Regardless, the error is nothing compared to your great effort!!! Thumbs up!!!
Dear Ollie, About 4 months ago I thanked you for including the tiny Malaccan empire in your History of the World vid. Today, I thank you for making this vid, focusing on the Malay states. Hat's off to you. :)
I am from Malay race and this is a great video but still incomplete. Filipina is also part of Malay archipelago and also the Kra Isthmus (South Thailand) where great kingdoms like Grahi (Krabi), Singgora (Songhkla), Berdelong (Phattalong), Setol (Satun) and the successor or Malacca Sultanate: Patani (Pattani). Sadly most of the kingdoms conquered by ayutthaya now become modern Thailand.
Amirul Azfar the video only have a wrong title they should include the Philippines since it is part of Malay Archipelago but i observed that the video shows the historic regions of Ethnic malays in which the Philippines is excluded... it's pretty accurate since none of the Filipino people today may be considered as Ethnically Malay. we are just part of Malay Race but not the Malay Ethnic
Thanks. Could you refer me to the Link where the resources helps us to understand more with regards to the Malay Archipelago, her people and the Sultanate empire which has been obliterated, adulterated from our National History here today. Thanks. ezracblee@gmail.com
Malays and all population in Southeast Asian from Taiwan and Yunan just a teori, not a fact, because without any research genetics and archeology. Based on DNA Metorkondrea research, scientists have found the origin of Taiwanese and Chinese populations is derived from the genes of the Southeast Asia population, because their genetic is younger than Southeast Asia population. The proof has been approved from Dr Stephen Oppenhiemer from Oxford University UK and according to DNA research in China by the Institute Of Songming Yunan.
I never knew I was interested in this part of the world's history, until I saw this video in my inbox. I'm surprised how late the english took malaysia. It took until mid 19th century before they really went for it.
pretty much right .. thanks to japan, they released Soekarno (our founding father) from the dutch exile, using Indonesian for communicating to us, build local army (PETA) to defend ourself, and created a committee for preparing our Independence (well ofc it's for propaganda originally) but suddenly Japan lose the war .. so Japanese army went back to japan but the Dutch hadn't come yet so we declared our Independence
And then colonial war broke out... sigh... we had history lessons on it here in the Netherlands. And in like the decades after the second world war it was always spoken about as 'police actions' which was of course not true because it was a war for independence, with all the atrocities of war included. Nowadays we learn the truth and just go 'jesus christ, what was wrong with us... what on earth were we thinking???'
you're right, a lot of nation in the world had dark past, and their government don't want it's people remember it it exist in Indonesia too, like in New Order era (1966-1998) government (ofc it's president Soeharto, I mean) killed millions of people just because they have "connection" to Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) that had been disbanded because of "failed coup" in 1965, because of him corruption becomes a tradition, and he's racist af towards chinese. you can say that a lot of Indonesian "failure" is because of him (corruption, race issue, economic inequality, java-centric, etc etc) .. and of course we never learn it in school but hey, it's the past, and we're in a lot better condition right now we used to hate japan because of their WWII atrocities in Indonesia, but now they're basically our role model
The Philippines must be included because of "Malay Archipelago" written on the title but the video shows the History of Ethnic Malays in which the Philippines is excluded... Filipinos aren't Ethnic Malay because Malay Culture is already Extinct in almost 90% of the Philippine Archipelago
Milenium412 Because they're basically a Spanish bastard daughter that fell in love with America but the love is unrequited. So they're not really Malays.
Bloody well done!, quite admiring these vids. Ah the East Indies, specifically Srivijaya in and around Java, with its noted history being amidst the 7th-14th centuries. Such a mystifying, naturally stunning region of our world that has relatively seen less conflict and misery, when compared to other places. Checking out a galley of Buddha statues from 'Wat Phra Borom' in Chaiya in southern Thailand, which was a then regional capital of the Srivijaya domains is certainly worth it. It's a pity i don't know much whatsoever about southeast Asia. Though I know from the 5th century, the island people's kf Sumatra and Java set up prosperous trading communities rivaling the coastal states of the Southeast Asian mainland. By the 7th century the Srivijaya empire controlled most of Sumatra and the Malay peninsula. The earliest purported account comes from a Chinese Buddhist pilgrim, in 671 C.E, who remarked that there were a thousand Buddhist monks at the court, and Srivijaya clearly acted as a centre for the diffusion of Buddhism in the region. Srivijaya faced many rivals, including the Saildendra kingdom of central Java - which constructed the awe inspiring vast temple at Borobodur around 800 C.E, and it's hold began to weaken in the 11th century. By 1400, it had been replaced by newer maritime power's there, especially the Malay Majapahit empire.
Siebener relaaax....it won't happen. Even the governor is strongly opposed to such agenda, if i'm not mistaken. Well... let's just not carried away with the bullshits in politics yes?? *hint (an election is about to happen in Palembang). hihihihi. Anyway the dance itself is just a form of an art not some sort of prayers or rituals.
Persian Traditionalist newer malay maritime empire, although short lived is Malaccan empire. starting as only coastal trading ports. Majapahit empire is Javanese. basically Malaysia is Malayized state, and Indonesia is Javanese state.
@@oocc7211 Indonesia Javanese state but they use Malay language as their national language.
Aiman Imran they do it to weaken the claims of Malay. same people will support China claims on South China Sea. they are not much different from their first generation. chauvinist, Chinese, communist, racist; same shit different names. Stop conceding to these Mongoloids.
They say Malay Also "Pendatang" who comes from indonesia, south thailand Brunei and many more. For the conclusion, they claim Malay are from nowhere and chinese are highes and mighty from other races in Malaysia.
I didn't know Demak held some area in southern part of Sumatera, starting from 1530 (2:45). Anyway, you just got my sub :-) Cheers mate! Looking forward for more of your videos.
Wow. All those tiny little kingdoms in the Middle East, Britain, India and Indonesia. There's just so god damn many of them and yet they keep changing constantly or get annexed by the bigger empires within decades. They're like the subatomic particles of countries. Nobody knows they exist, nobody cares they exist, and they don't exist for long, but some of them are important somehow.
And that's basically history in a nutshell. Strong nations and empires will always conquer weaker ones. Human beings have never changed.......and never will.
Richard Schiffman well there is a little state in Japan conquer the whole island just because they annex Kyoto (capital and most important place in that era) and other state shit themselves and decide to join them.
Harrison Shone those little kingdoms are basically a mini country for a bigger group of same people. they basically from 2 dominant ethnicities, javanese and malays. much like ethnic arab with different countries today.
Wikipedia's the main source, I use a few others when I can't find all the information on there. For example, I used the British Government's website to find the treaties with the Netherlands.
I highly recommend you start publishing your sources. Wikipedia is not a source, but it links to (hopefully good) sources at the bottom. It would give your videos a lot more legitimacy.
TheTurk321 people want to you to start searching for other sources but you don't realise that this makes the map a lot more inaccurate there's a lot of bullshit on the Internet and sometimes sources contradict each other,"oh but Wikipedia is not a good source" well yes it is bimbo

@@yueyee3964 what a joke. You philippines consider yourselves as a hispanic-asian country. You regard yourselves more closer to latin countries because shared cultures. Now, when there is a historical video about southeast asia, y'all suddenly changed your minds. Make up your mind and do not blame us. You are the one who is excluding yourselves firstly from us.
@@harryrinaldi2812 sure, and that's why our national hero is the "father of Malay nationalism", why we're a founding nation of ASEAN, why the younger generation is pushing for more indigenous studies (which, btw there are many indigenous ethnic groups who were never colonised by the spanish), etc. You could say to exclude Timor Leste and Flores because they're also "catholics and latinos" according to you. Sure, the hispanic influence is strong, mainly in religion, loanwords, and traditional music and dance, but that's not all that constitutes identity Our national identity is way more complex than your coloniser mind could comprehend. Yes we have a strong Hispanic influence (we aren't hispanic tho), but we're also definitely Malay/Austronesian Edit: former PH president Diosdado Macapagal was also the strongest advocate for the Maphilindo federation
Islamic egalitarianism and social mobility is one thing... esp because it's brought by traders not warriors. Compare to local feudal hindu-buddhists (yes we had feudalism just like in Europe). PS We never practiced Chinese religion! the Malay archipelago has a different traditional belief system of its own
They were mainly Buddhist/Hindu once upon a time due to Indian influence but they became Muslims later on. This was by influence of Islamic traders as well as the Sultanate of Malacca whose Hindu king Parameswara converted to Islam.
Thank you for the very good effort. Hope you can include the Philipines (proposed Maharlika) as part of the Malay Archipelago. Also Kampuchea (Kemboja/ Funan) and South Viernam (Champa) are part of Malays as well, similar to South Thailand (Greater Patani/ Langkasuka/ Tambralingga (Nagara Sri Dharmaraja)). Malays were dominant in those northern terrories but were pushed south.
That is accurate, to say the least. One thing is that it was more like the Byzantines of CK2, any kingdom that existed. People constantly warring/plotting against each other, even though they are de jure one state until they break away de facto
To their credit at least they tried to get it somewhat right. They WERE trying to model the whole world after all and the kingdoms in this region were so dynamic that it was probably hard to keep track of them all
I'm from Indonesia and the nobility of the royal family including kingdom of sungai pagu in western Sumatra which was the regional confederation of Pagaruyung, little input. still many royal kingdom in Indonesia which is not listed in the video above as: kingdom of bima, kingdom of aru(karo), kingdom of lampung, kingdom of pedir, the kingdom of Sumenep and much more :)
Actually they claim theirself as Portugesse and never claim theirself as Indonesian. The Indonesian attacked that country and claimed it as Indonesian. We Indonesian call it "The liberator". Around 2000 many christian are discriminated and been slaughtered in East of Indonesia and that's why they chose to leave. If you go to there right now, they still speak portugeese and use portugeese name.
Ollie ByeTry to change the Title to " History of Ethnic Malays" to avoid confusion about the Philippines since we are still part of Malay Achipelogo, Your video is actually correct, only the title is needed to change
Filipinos are malay austronesians the malay identity was there before Islam it is only malaysia's definition that malays has to be muslims, the Dayak, the Batak and Minahasan people are significantly Christian but they are also part of the Malay people, i dont see how filipinos are not malays just because they are not muslims, it is such a shame that the filipino islanda except for the southern part arent included
Ryan Suryoatmojo the Video only have misleading title since it shows Malay territorial History instead of Showing Territorial History of the Archipelago. the colors in the video is correct.. Filipinos are Malay in Race but not ethnically
Ethnic Malays? Dude if the video creator create this on purpose only to 'Ethnic Malays' then the map wouldn't even include Java, Sulawesi, Lesser Sunda islands, the Moluccas, and Western New Guinea. Why? because their ethnicity are not Malays Just remember: 'Malay' and 'Austronesian' are two different things 'Malays' is an ethnicity native to coastal Sumatra island, but then spread into Malayan Peninsula and coastal Borneo Island, and no, 'Malay' is not a race, its only an ethnicity While 'Austronesia' is a term of a language family that originated from Taiwan island, and Malay language are one of them, 'Austronesia' and 'Malay' are not synonymous
What i meant by Austronesian Malay was the term Malay race that was put forward by blumenbach, while indeed not popular now it was in the 19th-20th century, yes while the term Austronesian was a classification by language, the term malay race was an attempt to group the Austronesian's into one racial category, so even though it is not synonymous it is/was used interchangeably, while its usage now varies from country to country i prefer the term to define the people of the archipelago,
Iam as a indonesian , And i tell you In 4:14 Indonesia take the territory of the portugenese Timor in 1975, and in 1999 the Timor Timur separate from Indonesian Country and become as independent state.
you didn't get the Video... in 4:14 Indonesia's color is Purple... and Timor's Color is Light Purple.. it means it is an Indonesian occupied Portuguese Timor
Its kinda fun to watch some dot suddenly appear with its own colour set before KABOOM it grew 10 times its previous size and start eating up huge areas of the map. Or pausing every now and then to see places form together and broke apart like biscuit crumbs.

Malay is an ethnicity name in the Archipelago which is minority compare to Java & Sunda ethnic. More accurately named Indonesian Archipelago or Nusantara since most of the islands are part of Indonesia.

Okay I assume since this covered SEA and more, then the Malay Archipelago here refers to the power dominance of SEA and the surrounding areas. If that's the case I'm either wrong in understanding the colour charts or that I am forgetting something vital about Brunei's history: didn't Brunei have an empire that covered nearly the whole of Borneo that extended all the way to Philippines? Sulu was part of Brunei too, so I'm not entirely sure why there's a solid line instead of a dotted line for the border.

2:44 this is incorrect. Southern part of Borneo was under Banjar Sultanate since 1526 thanks to Demak Sultanate helping Banjar to be the Kingdom in Borneo agains vasal state of Majapahit beside Brunei Sultanate. And that it was never under Brunei Sultanate since Brunei formation began.

Very well done, sir! :) Been a fan of your works for quite a while now, and I'm very happy seeing that you finally make a quite complete history of the Nusantara (that's how we usually call it here in Indonesia). Although I'd like to add some informations here:
- Aceh never ruled the land of Batak (west of Lake Toba).
~ Comes from a Javanese, an Indonesian, a history mapping enthusiast, and a huge fan of your maps. :>
I'll add a little bit to this info for the Malay Peninsula too:
- Old Kedah (or Kadaram) was there in the Kedah state of Malaysia at least from 6th century BCE.
Ah, yes. I've read about those too. But isn't Tanah Merah the same as Chi Tu?

Philippines is a part of the Malay Archipelago. Not just geographicaly but in terms of culture, language, beliefs and skin color.
Well in short it is small tribes then Spain, USA, Japan, USA and independence.
It's ALOT more complex than that. Don't forget the centuries long Chinese influence on the Philippines.
Matthew Camit We are only geographically part of Malay Archipelogo and Bloods but we are not Ethnically Malays
they are indeed part of Malay Archipelago.

What do you think about this video ? Is it correct historically ? I'm Malaysian btw and yeah the Malay Peninsular part are indeed correct
Muhammad Azim i think he meant the majapahit empire, because their influence reach phollipines and papua
source : en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Majapahit#
Well he left out a lot of eastern Indonesia until Tidore. There's sooo much more there than what's here. And yes, he could have included southern Philippines here because there is an interconnected history between Mindanao - Sabah/Brunei - Maluku. Otherwise Western Indonesia (Java-Sumatra-Borneo) is pretty much correct @Muhammad Azim
the video is correct it only have a misleading title...

I agree
The proof has been approved from Dr Stephen Oppenhiemer from Oxford University UK and according to DNA research in China by the Institute Of Songming Yunan.

pretty much right .. thanks to japan, they released Soekarno (our founding father) from the dutch exile, using Indonesian for communicating to us, build local army (PETA) to defend ourself, and created a committee for preparing our Independence (well ofc it's for propaganda originally)
but suddenly Japan lose the war ..
so Japanese army went back to japan
but the Dutch hadn't come yet
so we declared our Independence
And then colonial war broke out... sigh... we had history lessons on it here in the Netherlands. And in like the decades after the second world war it was always spoken about as 'police actions' which was of course not true because it was a war for independence, with all the atrocities of war included. Nowadays we learn the truth and just go 'jesus christ, what was wrong with us... what on earth were we thinking???'
you're right, a lot of nation in the world had dark past, and their government don't want it's people remember it
it exist in Indonesia too, like in New Order era (1966-1998) government (ofc it's president Soeharto, I mean) killed millions of people just because they have "connection" to Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) that had been disbanded because of "failed coup" in 1965, because of him corruption becomes a tradition, and he's racist af towards chinese. you can say that a lot of Indonesian "failure" is because of him (corruption, race issue, economic inequality, java-centric, etc etc) .. and of course we never learn it in school
but hey, it's the past, and we're in a lot better condition right now
we used to hate japan because of their WWII atrocities in Indonesia, but now they're basically our role model

Just a question, why isn't Phillipines included? I regard them apart of the Malays as well.
The Philippines must be included because of "Malay Archipelago" written on the title but the video shows the History of Ethnic Malays in which the Philippines is excluded... Filipinos aren't Ethnic Malay because Malay Culture is already Extinct in almost 90% of the Philippine Archipelago

Siebener.
The article says that was a traditional dance for buddhist. And now you want to blame muslims because they will not do that dance again?

Well... let's just not carried away with the bullshits in politics yes?? *hint (an election is about to happen in Palembang). hihihihi. Anyway the dance itself is just a form of an art not some sort of prayers or rituals.
Persian Traditionalist though sailendra use malay as their language and then merge with srivijaya?

That's why even today Indonesia votes for bupati (regencies).
Richard Schiffman well there is a little state in Japan conquer the whole island just because they annex Kyoto (capital and most important place in that era) and other state shit themselves and decide to join them.

Why was Islam ultimately chosen by the Malay people instead of more local relgions like Buddhism, Hindusim and Chinese relgions?
Well Kievan Rus almost converted to Islam according to a popular legend, but the king decided not to because Islam outlawed alcoholic beverages.

Ryan Suryoatmojo yes Filipinos are Malay Austronesians.. not by talking 'bout Ethnicity we're not.. i am not hating i'm telling the truth...
Ethnic Malays? Dude if the video creator create this on purpose only to 'Ethnic Malays' then the map wouldn't even include Java, Sulawesi, Lesser Sunda islands, the Moluccas, and Western New Guinea. Why? because their ethnicity are not Malays
Just remember: 'Malay' and 'Austronesian' are two different things
'Malays' is an ethnicity native to coastal Sumatra island, but then spread into Malayan Peninsula and coastal Borneo Island, and no, 'Malay' is not a race, its only an ethnicity
While 'Austronesia' is a term of a language family that originated from Taiwan island, and Malay language are one of them, 'Austronesia' and 'Malay' are not synonymous
What i meant by Austronesian Malay was the term Malay race that was put forward by blumenbach, while indeed not popular now it was in the 19th-20th century, yes while the term Austronesian was a classification by language, the term malay race was an attempt to group the Austronesian's into one racial category, so even though it is not synonymous it is/was used interchangeably, while its usage now varies from country to country i prefer the term to define the people of the archipelago,

indonesia malaysia bersatu
Indonesia merdeka duluan dripada Malaysia ga jadi deh..
So Kalimantan was part of brunei??
no it's not..it's called borneo..
King Dome Brunei used to dominate what is now the northern part of Kalimantan that's under the jurisdiction of Malaysian Confederation.

Malay is an ethnicity name in the Archipelago which is minority compare to Java & Sunda ethnic. More accurately named Indonesian Archipelago or Nusantara since most of the islands are part of Indonesia.
So "Sundaland" is Sundanese Island?Malays and Javanese don't belong there?
@@ThatOneMalaysianGuy Sundaland was named by European, supposed to be Java/Jawaland since Javanese are majority.

its not malay archipelago.
the name is Nusantara Archipelago.
malay just penisula.

so, in my opinion, this all area is belong to Nusantara.

Indonesia itself so many years have plan to change their country name with the name: NUSANTARA.
But we considered many politicaly impact will be get resistance with neighbour country about that name.
Lol you guys are funny. So you are saying that people in Kalimantan and Sumatra are not Malay?
Dayak not malay, Banjar not malay. just some few people can speak malay.
if someone ask them: they are malay or not? they will answer I am Dayak, or I am Banjar. I'm not malay.
even Batak people and Nias people ini Sumatera they cannot speak malay.
thankyou for your correction.
so at least now you get the knowledged about that.
1:57 oh look who controls all the islands, it's the mahajapit? majahapit? mapajahit? mahajapit? mapajahit? ma-ja-pa-hit?

2:44 this is incorrect. Southern part of Borneo was under Banjar Sultanate since 1526 thanks to Demak Sultanate helping Banjar to be the Kingdom in Borneo agains vasal state of Majapahit beside Brunei Sultanate. And that it was never under Brunei Sultanate since Brunei formation began.
