And the important thing, I didnt say malay is Malaysia, and Sumatra is Indonesia. Because this history has existed before long long long long long ago before Indonesia&malaysia is born.

Great video, very well-articulated about the history of Nusantara! I’m Indonesian and gotta admit, Indonesian and Malaysian histories are extremely complicated, with too many kingdoms and empires as well as principalities, until Dutch, British and Portuguese colonial rule, until the Japanese imperial invasion which led to the independence of all states in the archipelago. Btw, Bengkulu was first colonised by the British (EIC) until the Anglo Dutch treaty where the Brits and the Dutch switched Bengkulu and Melaka.
Fantastic channel, and the best episode yet. Your use of evolving maps makes it so much easier to keep all this information in order. For a request if you're looking for them, I'd love to see one on the nomadic movements and subsequent settlements/conquests of Eurasian and/or African tribes.
Indonesia/nusantara is quite badass, not only Indonesia is 1 of 2 country in Asia that managed to resist mongol invasion but also managed to trick and use the mongol army for their own gain...
@kepala kentang its explained in the video. Basically this Kublai Khan dude in Mongol hear about this rich kingdom in island far south called Singasari and wanted to make it his own (at this time, mongol already invading and conquering Vietnam). The Mongol send an emissary to Java and ask for a tribute in exchange for "protection". But Singasari refuse the demand for tribute and cut the emissary's ear. The Khan furious and send a huge army from modern day Vietnam to punish Singasari. Meanwhile in Java, Singasari is in war with Kediri and Madura. Singasari send Raden Wijaya up north to fight againts Madura and win, but Kediri, attacking from south won againts Singasari, thus ended the Singasari kingdom. At this time, the mongol army who just recently landed in Java meet with Raden Wijaya. Raden Wijaya tell mongol that Singasari is no longer exist, but he made a promise to mongol, if the mongol helping him conquer Kediri, he'll send tribute to Mongol and become Mongol vassal state. At first Mongol army hesitated, they don't have enough food supply to fight far south, but raden Wijaya said he'll manage the supply line for the mongol, and the mongol believe it... That's the greatest mistake the mongol army made in Java, believing Raden Wijaya. After the mongol army done attacking and destroying kediri, Raden Wijaya ask the mongol army to visit Majapahit for celebration. En route to Majapahit, Raden Wijaya ambushed the now hungry, tired and unprepared mongol army. Without supply line, it's almost impossible for mongol to fight against Majapahit and end up fleeing back to Mongol. Soon, the mongol empire crumbling after the death of Kublai Khan and Majapahit become the geratest empire in Nusantara. End of story... Damn, i feel like writing a Game of Thrones story...
Love your explanation of Nusantara. This world part of history rarely mentioned in western schools, even in Indonesian and Malaysian schools the history never been in detail. Hope for people to know these. Oh and also I'd like to mention Lazardi Wong Jogja for his more precise content of kingdom areas. No offense. I still love your content

Epimetheus your welcome bro. Just helped him got more support, since he had underrated but awesome channel. Hope you got better content from his videos too. I'm glad to help you and him
Nusantara was not a unified kingdom or even an Empire for that matter. It is base on a legend or fairytale story of Indonesian Kings claiming they conquered all of the region of Archipelago South East Asia but the remnants of such imperial expansionism cannot be seen anywhere. Majahapit or Srivijaya was a city-state that hold vast tributary territories but never really had any direct control over them. This is not what we call an Empire or kingdom.
Tee Touch I dont know if there is any source saying indonesian kings claiming such thing, the srivijaya kingdom territorial are known mostly from notes written by foreign kingdoms (chinese notes for the most part) and explorers who visited sumatera (chinese buddhist monk i-tsing), and as for invasion, there is an inscription in bangka island written about srivijaya sending army to conquer java
You have to take any written chronicles regardless foreign or local with a grain of salt because it can be just a legendary event or base on nationalism. This is why experts rather focus more on the physical archaeological point of view rather than rely on secondary sources like annals, manuscripts, and such that may or may not be true.
fun fact Majapahit means "bitter quince" in Indonesian legend says that once, Raden Wijaya resting on a place with many quince trees after defeating Mongols (it's not really a quince, but i found it quite comparable). He eats one of it and spit it back because it was bitter. but, as wise as a king was, he tells his followers that this bitter quince that he just spit out gives a reminder to them for previous bitter struggle they had (chased by Jayakatwang, evicted with all their wealth, fighting Mongols) and he'll naming this realm just that. he name the realm Wilwatikta (which in Sanskrit also means bitter quince). and the rest is history
Thank you very much for this, it's way more comprehensive than what they teach in our schools. This is quite accurate based what I have learned from the local legends and myths. Great work
This is basically my 12 years history subject in school being summarized in 9 minutes 😂 The hindu-buddha-islam empire learned on primary school, the portugese come then voc till Independence learned on junior high school, then after the Independence era on senior high school.. But I learned some new things from this video too..
South East asian countries had very strong Indian religious, cultural, arts and linguistic influence for almost two thousand years. Be it Indonesia or Malaysia or Cambodia or Thailand/Vietnam and Laos, Philippines. Almost all south east asian language alphabets and scripts have been derived from Indian languages mainly Sanskrit and Pallawa (the latter related to Tamil). The Angkor group of temples in Cambodia got full Sanskrit inscriptions to this day. Most of the people in these countries know the Indian epics Ramayana & Mahabharata. A splendid performance of Ramayana is staged on a grand scale in Java, Indonesia right next to the great Hindu and Buddhist temples of Prambhanan and Borobudur. Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei have strangely converted to Islam under Arab trade influence though their every day businesses and people names are full of Sanskrit words mixed with arabic. Indonesia cannot and does not hide its religious and cultural past as its visible clearly all over the country in its temples, rituals and monuments but Malaysia tried hard to wipe out its past and by imposing hardline Islam and does not teach its own history to the people. I actually feel quite strange that countries which followed Hinduism and Buddhism for millenia - such a long time - suddenly coverted to Islam like that and don't want to associate themselves with the world renowned monuments their ancestors built.
Lol que bueno, this history pretty much summarizes what I've learned on the basic, intermediate and high school of history class of Indonesia. For under 10 minutes. Nice job!.
Fun facts! 1. There was once a prophecy that the offspring of Ken Dedes (later married Ken Arok) would be the ruler of Java 2. Jogjakarta's sultan, Hamengkubuwono X, can trace his ancestry back until to the famous Ken Arok and Ken Dedes 3. Jogjakarta is the kingdom inside the country, according to the treaty between the kingdom and Indonesia 4. There's a prophecy called Jayabaya prophecy arguably written by a Kediri king in 1200s. He predicted that Java would be occupied by the white colored skin people for very a long time and later yellow colored skin people from the north would occupy Java for the lifetime of a corn-stalk. This is the reason of why Indonesian (especially Javanese) accepted Japan very quickly compared to other countries in SEA region when they came to Indonesia. Also thanks for the video, much appreciated!
Like father like son, Ken Arok become the king by stealing. Instead of stealing money/gold like his father did, he killed the king then steal the wife and the thrones :D
@Epimetheus You're welcome! @snoiprocs16 Yup though we call it Daerah Istimewa Jogjakarta or "Special Region of Jogjakarta", it was kinda like a special treatment from Indonesia since they were willingly joining Indonesia back then. Also there were once more than one kingdom inside Indonesia, however they were coup d'état-d by the communists or the heir was dead after the wars so the kings gave their power and wealth to the government, the only remaining kingdom who have the power is Jogja for some reasons. Still the royal families which were coup d'état-d are still exist until now, but they just lose their power unlike Jogja. On the side note, the previous president SBY once tried to abolish the monarchy power in Jogja, however all the people there objected it. The proof is he held the election about whether to abolish the monarchy power in Jogja, and most of the voters voted "NO" to abolish the monarchy power. Afterward the laws reconfirm the power of monarchy power in Jogja. The power is still there and the government can't intervene with anything related to Jogja. I heard that they said that if Jogja were forced to become a normal province, then might as well they released themselves from Indonesia. You can say that Jogja people are royalists as hell, not that it's a bad thing though.

You have one of the best history channels on TH-cam. The most concise and authentic. But please, work on your intonations. It is quite difficult to understand where one sentence ends and the other begins.
This must watch by the milenials. They have to understand that in the past almost (if not) all of South East Asian countries shared the same history together. We have the same ancestors and ruled by the same kingdoms. Colonisation separated us into Spanish, Portugese, British and Dutch colonialization territories. As an Indonesian, I sometimes feel sad seeing how our Indonesian millenials with lack of knowledge about history bullying the other SEA countries from claiming their ancestors greatness. Fact: Srivijaya and Majapahit aren't only Indonesia. But also Malaysia, Brunei (Borneo), Singapore (Tumasik), Champa (Thailand), Philippines,Cambodia. Even thought their kingdoms were centralized in Indonesia, but they're still the son or doughters of the same kings. The colonialisation gives an opportunity for Indonesia to get the biggest share of what the parents have left for their children.
Thank you for your video. Indeed the Nusantara is such a huge realm of culture, despite its large territory remain underrated. It is very unique because they are Asian (south east) at same time related to Polynesian (since most are Austronesian people)
South of Thailand and Myanmar are Malay lands that were confiscated. In the past, before the Spanish came, the island of Mindanao belonged to the Malay Sultanate of Mindanao. Now the majority of Mindanao's population are immigrants from the northern Philippines, while now the native population has become a minority after the great massacre of Ilokano Catholic extremists, immigrants from the north.
I always saw plenty of empires, Roman empire, Russian empire (I forgot the actual name), Mongolian empire, Turkish Empire and British empire. But I never thought about a Malay empire. Living in Singapore, I'm a bit embarrassed that I know so much about other country but so little about Malay history, it's our national language but I can't speak or understand it. Hell I didnt even think about a Malay empire until recently I saw a Malaysian parliament video and thought about when Malaysia was a empire. Thank you for this detailed video
There was no malay empire, even at its height sriwiajaya was led bay 2 Javanese imperial families. With melaka, they can't be called empire, they could not go beyong malay core realm, and did not even last more than 100 years

I am a javanese Indonesian. We've beaten the mongols once, but due to our "Strange" methods of defeating them, this fact is not well published in our history books. I knew this even before your video. It was not that after many Mongols died in combat that Singhasari/Majapahit finished them off. It was a quick victory against Kediri, Raden Wijaya held a celebration party and was inviting every mongols. He knew mongols love to get drunk. So, he basically waited for them to get themselves drunk, and then swiftly assasinated tens of thousands of mongols. It was told in some sources(i forgot which), out of 3000 mongolian ships, only 30 made it back. Hahaha, what a crazy night out with the homies, heh? Because of this very efficient but morally insufficient method being used, our victory against mongols is not well told in indonesian history books.
not strange at all..strangers from far aways land demand tribute and open declaration of war.If you look at ancient egyptian statues, the nose of the statues were broken as a sign.It should be enough for mongols to understand the meaning of it.but well played..it so funny!😆

Thank you
yeah...I just pinned a comment to the top pointing that out!
had the right one written down said the wrong one for some strange reason :(
Thanka again :)
No problem. Keep up the good work mate. I do enjoy watching all of your video. 👍
Thank you I appreciate it very much :)
no,,East Timor weren't annexed by Indonesia,,but Indonesia were annexed by East Timor(portugal)
I'm from Brunei
Bruneian Sultanate Empire stretched as far to Manila the capital of Philippines and they were animist by majority but converted to Islam. Then Spanish crusader came threatened to kill the Filipinos if they didn't convert to Catholic and many who didn't convert still lives in southern part of Philippines
hi biasa thanks for bringing this up actually the coruler of manila rajah matanda or rajah aceh iwas actually the nephew of the sultan of brunei ( 1571 ) most of the ruler s of rajahnate of manila were relatives of the sultan of brunei .because the sultan of brunei sent muslim missionaries to rajahnate of manila the spaniards invaded brunei and then left.
Catholic always good at threating ppl if not converted, while ISlam spread through peacefull merchant, and marriage or pure heart call in Nusantara
Tactical Exosuit slavery? Like the Christian muricans ?
I can't say a word because my empire is now starting to broke up...

That would be awesome :)
The best history videos about Nusantara so far! Oh and by the way, Mataram Sultanate was separated into several Sultanates, 2 of them (Yogyakarta and Surakarta) still has their reigning monarch. Great job!
It's great that you explored the history of the Malay archipelago, Nusantara! Thank you!
Is a fascinating history....would love to make more on this area of the world in the near future :)
Ehem.. indonesian archipelago!
Just kidding, lol
Malay???you fucking dumb?
Many indo butthurt here, absolutely they talking like nothing. Rememberrrr malay is not country, malay is tribe living in sumatra and long long long ago explore to the north and found melaca peninsula, if you ask what is the indigenous of Malaysia country is orang asli living in central melaca peninsula and dayak in malaysia borneo(both of indonesia&malaysia, there is living dayak in borneo island). And the important thing, I didnt say malay is Malaysia, and Sumatra is Indonesia. Because this history has existed before long long long long long ago before Indonesia&malaysia is born.
Tiada istilah nusantara archipelago. Kerana Austronesia itu adalah Malay Race.
This probably is the best accurate summary of the history of this region. By instinct probably the most unbiased account. And told in just enough minutes for the short-attention spanned creature of 21st century. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

The Philippines are mainly Austronesians too, some of us travel to Indonesia and Malaysia and we physically blend in ,in terms of appearance. Their languages also sound like similar to some dialects in the Philippines.
Right you are!
but Philippine don't have civilization like Java, Peninsular, Sumatra, Bali, Coastal Borneo, South Sulawesi or Indonesia-Malaysia region. not single stone building build in Philippine not single. Borneo, Sumatra, Bali, Lombok, Sulawesi, Peninsular and Java all have ancient temple Hindu-Buddhist and animist, huge stone tomb and statue.

@CAT CHANNEL even if that's the case you just have no complex ancient civilization and history.
I really appreciate this video. many videos about world history that never talk about my ancestors region and how powerful it was. Thank you. Good job!
havent even watched yet, every time you upload a video i get so excited! :)
Also I am Malaysian but live in Australia, could you make a video 'History of Australia'? You can include like the aboriginal and their history as well as the netheralands and england coming to australia and the modern australia too?
Great job, as always. You're the best!
Best video yet!
Fantastic channel, and the best episode yet. Your use of evolving maps makes it so much easier to keep all this information in order. For a request if you're looking for them, I'd love to see one on the nomadic movements and subsequent settlements/conquests of Eurasian and/or African tribes.
Indonesia/nusantara is quite badass, not only Indonesia is 1 of 2 country in Asia that managed to resist mongol invasion but also managed to trick and use the mongol army for their own gain...
and so the islamic turks were unaffected by the mongol invasions because they were busy invading india
now the mongol is no longer an exception then.....
@kepala kentang
its explained in the video.
@Aleksandr Mikhail
There is always exception within exception. In this case, Japan and Indonesia. Mongol also failed to invade Japan, twice!
there is more than 2 country..egypt and japan beat mongol invasion too
Interesting, informative, and worthwhile video. Many thanks.
You are a historical master...I love history!
Great video! I love that you covered this region
None taken, Thanks!
Just looked at Lazardi Wong Jogja...that looks like an awesome channel...I'll definetly check those out in the future especially if making more videos on this region.
Thanks man :)
This is why experts rather focus more on the physical archaeological point of view rather than rely on secondary sources like annals, manuscripts, and such that may or may not be true.
fun fact
Majapahit means "bitter quince" in Indonesian
legend says that once, Raden Wijaya resting on a place with many quince trees after defeating Mongols (it's not really a quince, but i found it quite comparable).
Great work
This is basically my 12 years history subject in school being summarized in 9 minutes 😂
The hindu-buddha-islam empire learned on primary school, the portugese come then voc till Independence learned on junior high school, then after the Independence era on senior high school..
As always, your video is so damn well animated and explainatory that I'd definetely advice your channel to teachers in schools!
Lol que bueno, this history pretty much summarizes what I've learned on the basic, intermediate and high school of history class of Indonesia. For under 10 minutes. Nice job!.
honestly thank you so much your videos are so good!!
Thank you Yesid, I very much appreciate that.
I am glad you enjoy my videos man :)
Enjoyed the vid my dude... Keep up the good work.
Fun facts!
1. There was once a prophecy that the offspring of Ken Dedes (later married Ken Arok) would be the ruler of Java
2. Jogjakarta's sultan, Hamengkubuwono X, can trace his ancestry back until to the famous Ken Arok and Ken Dedes
3. Jogjakarta is the kingdom inside the country, according to the treaty between the kingdom and Indonesia
Thanks! Those are fun facts :)
Like father like son, Ken Arok become the king by stealing. Instead of stealing money/gold like his father did, he killed the king then steal the wife and the thrones :D
Mohammad Hasan And get killed by his own stepson... and the stepson also get killed by his son... its pretty much Game of Thrones story...
siscon NEET instersting to know about the Jogja, is it until today being recognize as a Kingdom inside Indonesia?
@Epimetheus
You're welcome!
@snoiprocs16
Yup though we call it Daerah Istimewa Jogjakarta or "Special Region of Jogjakarta", it was kinda like a special treatment from Indonesia since they were willingly joining Indonesia back then.
You can say that Jogja people are royalists as hell, not that it's a bad thing though.
will you ever do one of the romans, greeks, or macedonians, i know its been done a lot and youtube history is practically oversaturated with the history of those but i really really like the way you do your history videos they are some of the best, also big props on how you do the more obscure people/cultures, your channel is the best!

Nice work Epimetheus. Ive studied so much History but my knowledge "was" limited here so thank you for the lesson.

That was totally confusing and completely fascinating. Subscribed.
you sure did justice to it man. I have been very impressed with the detail and informative nature of your "lightening speed videos". I also appreciate the non-commercial nature of your work and I will make it a point of duty to save and donate something, however little.
thanks for your work.

Thanks a lot for the video! It was really interesting!

The Utte! yes epimetheus, the history of tibet is very interesting! they had their own empire and everything.
Wow that's amazing, I never knew about the history of Malaysia and Indonesia.
I learned more knowledge here than my school. Thanks for the video!

Thank you for this detailed video
it's nusantara empire,not malay empire,java,sulawesi,papua,molucca,bali,madura,nusa tenggara,they're not malay

Thanks for the information on this great video
