In retrospect, I was expecting there to be more territorial changes in this video. Anyway, it's back to the History of Asia project now. Thanks for watching!
Really nice! I like the detail you put on the Battle of Ambarawa. Though I'm a bit disappointed that you didn't show Yogyakarta as an important city, despite it being the capital of Indonesia during most of the revolution. Well, at least you mentioned the General Offensive of 1 March 1949. Some other important cities aren't shown as well, those are: 1) Banda Aceh, the safest place for Indonesians during the revolution as it successfully defended itself from the Dutch offensive, and the place where after Yogyakarta falls and the Dutch declared victory over Indonesia, it immediately announced through a radio station (Radio Rimba Raya) that the Republic still stands. 2) Bukittinggi, the capital of Indonesia after Yogyakarta's fall to the Dutch. This period is known in Indonesian history as the PDRI (Pemerintahan Darurat Republik Indonesia or the 'Emergency Government of the Republic of Indonesia'. 3) Makassar, capital of the Sulawesi Province and later the East Indonesia State. It was, and still is the largest city in eastern Indonesia. Instead, I don't think the towns of Kendawangan/Ketapang, Kragan, and Tanjung played much role during the revolution. Also, in the first "police action" (or the "Dutch military agression, as we called it here in Indonesia), all of the northern coast of Central Java has fallen to the Dutch, as well as Malang (then the capital city of East Java) since 31 July 1947. While in the second "police action", the Dutch also occupied the lands along the eastern coast of Sumatra from Jambi up to Bengkalis in Riau around 28-30 December 1948. There are also some other quite prominent events happened during the war of independence that aren't shown in this video, such as: 1) The Battle of Medan (13 October 1945-April 1946) between Republicans and Allied forces, which resulted in the latter's victory. 2) The East Sumatra Revolution (March 1946), a 'social revolution' where armed Republican groups (where most of them are laborers who allegedly affiliated with the Indonesian Communist Party) done a mass killing to the aristocrats of most of the remaining monarchies in eastern North Sumatra, where they accused to be pro-Dutch. 3) The Cumbok War in Aceh (2 December 1945-16 January 1946) between pro-Republic ulamas (Muslim scholars) and pro-Dutch uleebalangs (aristocrats). 4) The Bandung Sea of Fire (24 March 1946), where the Republicans burned much of the city of Bandung in West Java as they retreated from the city after an ultimatum by the British who has occupied it. 5) The Siege of Surakarta (7-10 August 1949), where the Republicans under Slamet Rijadi successfully retook the city of Solo from the Dutch troops who has occupied it since late 1948. 5) The first Indonesian flag-raising in Alwatzikhobillah Palace of the Sambas Sultanate in West Kalimantan, which triggered a battle for 2 days (3-4 September 1945) between Republicans and Allied forces who has occupied Sambas since 2 days before. 6) The Battle of Bengkayang (8 October 1946) where pro-independence forces led by Ali Anyang successfully retake the city of Bengkayang (also in West Kalimantan) from the Dutch for 18 hours. 7) Indonesia's first parachuting military operation from Yogyakarta to the village of Sambi in Central Kalimantan (17 October 1947) under the command of Tjilik Riwut. 8) The Kalimantan Proclamation (17 May 1949), a proclamation by pro-independence forces in the town of Kandangan led by Hasan Basry who announces that the province of South Kalimantan has become a part of the Republic of Indonesia. Before that, from May to December 1948, various military conflicts between Hasan Basry's group and the Dutch has happened across the province, where the former attacked several places like Haruai, Nagara, Tanjung, Ampah, and Tamiang Layang. 9) The meeting of South Sulawesi kings (October 1945), where the rulers of the various states in southern Sulawesi led by Andi Djemma of Luwu and Andi Mappanyukki of Bone swore allegiance to the Republic of Indonesia, leading to conflicts with the Australian forces who'd later occupied the island. Lastly, I'm a bit confused by this statement in August 1950: "Indonesia adopts a new constitution, creating a federal state with the capital in Jakarta, and in union with the Dutch crown." I believe you're referring to the RUSI (Republic of the United States of Indonesia) which was indeed a time when Indonesia became federal. But as far as I know, it was formed on 27 December 1949, and ended on 17 August 1950, when Indonesia became a unitary state again. Are you sure you're not confusing the events' dates? Overall, great job and thank you for making the video.
GalacticPenguinTV I think the situation was still a bit more complicated, even then shown here. This is a good video for understanding the conflict, but an even better version can be made. For example, I know of Dutch maps that show very different occupation zones on Java and especially Sumatra and the autonomous states that were set up could have less rudimentary borders.

This video didnt show about how the other etnik in another island who fight back against Dutch and their allies (british) and then almost all of the etnik in the indonesia archipelagos decided to join with the Republik of Indonesia. The japaneese lied when they said "asia for the asians". edit:(i miss typed burma as manchuria i got a brain twist after reading about japan in manchuria during ww2)
@George Nathanael that's true lol, when a western journalist asked why would he ever let that to happen he just said it's was sacrifice we needed to pay for our independence.
As someone with mild colourblindness, I have literally no idea what's going on in this video. The colours in the key you chose for both factions are far, far too similar.
This video would have been better with pointers on locations of the events. Not just the explanations. For example the Darul Islam revolt happened in Java, and Republic of South Maluku happened in those small islands at northeast, this video has a map, and it doesn't show where on the map did these happen. I'm slightly disappointed with that. And this video would have gotten much more viewers if it was uploaded in August or November.
Awesome video. Feels really weird to watch. On one hand I know what the Dutch did there and I like to see empires fall (especially on maps), on the other hand, I get a weird (mostly irrational?) feeling of national pride that just wants to see the Netherlands get its colonies back, I guess being proud of your own country is a bit weird sometimes...
We all have countries we like to root for in history. For me, I have a tick for Horde nations and empires. As long as you acknowledge all the facts that come with rooting for them and see where they went wrong, I think it's good fun.
@@budikurniadi6104 of course not, that's why it's a weird double feeling. Because I'm aware of the atrocities (and not proud of them), while simultaneously proud of the achievements. I suppose that, when you realize that you didn't really contribute to any of it, it is much easier to feel a shared sense of pride for actions committed by your ancestors / people who share your national identity, than it is to feel a shared sense of guilt for actions you yourself never committed.
Always well done, I just wish you wrote in another typo (italics maybe) the names of the islands or archipelagos mentioned in the news box. I fortunately know where are the big islands like Sumatra and Java, but for example the Maluku islands I don't. Maybe it could be an improvement (you've already done many improvements in your videos!) to now indicate where are the important regions to know for people not knowing precisely the geography of the region you show! Happy new year!
I'm from the Netherlands, and this particular turn of history always interested me. Granted, I've seen it 90% from the Dutch perspective. But to put it very simply; it was practically the Dutch version of the Vietnam War. (except that Indonesia didn't become a Communist country). And now the two countries seem quite at peace, on friendly terms even.
Funny you said that because the nvas read a book about an indonesian general while he fought the dutch so don't be suprise if the nvas used the same tactics as indonesia
It saddens my heart that the Dutch Indies werent treated better. If only the Dutch Empire could have fallen the way the British Empire fell: Into a family of nations.
United Kingdom, USA, France, Israel, South Korea and Australia supported the Netherlands Soviet Union, Communist China, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Palestine supported Indonesians This is reflected even today in what Indonesia considers its friendly allies and mixed relations of distrust or hostility.

Perhaps, the next revolution video, a video of the archipelago from before Indonesia existed until Indonesia was established until now (during the colonialization of England, Portugal and the Netherlands, then Japan). because there will be seen the formation of Indonesian territory based on ethnic and cultural similarities. not limited to the year of independence of the Republic of Indonesia which began in 1945.

No, What i mean is that Ollie Bye simply doesn't acknowledge most wars after 1945 in most of his maps. Like how he doesn't have the Sri Lankan Civil War in any of his History of South Asia videos, or how his History of Africa video doesn't have the Nigerian Civil War. And this is a rare case of Ollie actually acknowledging a post-1945 war. I have no idea where you got the idea that the Portuguese Colonial War would come after the Bush war.

Good to see a country work so hard to gain Independence, and work so hard to stop to giving others, like West Papua/East Timor, from their own independence lol
West Papua wasn't "transferred", it was violently invaded and since has been illegally occupied by Indonesia. It is pretty well-documented, Ollie Bye www.pedallingforpapua.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Takeover-of-WP-2002.pdf
Enough with this crap, Papua was part of our history since medieval era, it was discovered by sailors from Srivijaya Empire, it became part of Majapahit Empire, it became part of Ternatean Tidorean Sultanate, when Dutch came, they took it from the sultanate, when we declared our independence our leader demanded Dutch to return it but they gave zero crap, so our leader took it by military way since they took it from our sultanate. Even their anthem & flag was made by Dutch instead of Papuans, their anthem was written in Indonesian instead of Papuan languages, do you realize by supporting this group u r also supported terrorists, Free West Papua killed & robbed many people, raped a nurse, kidnapped many villagers as their hostage, even killed a priest who wanted to preach a village in a Sunday Morning, so why would u supported terrorists?
"Discovered"? Shut up ! They didn't discover shit. Papuans were already living there and it wasn't even the whole island. Wouldn't I sound dumb if I say that Indonesia should be part of the Netherlands or Malaysia because of their common history ? Yes, I would and so do you. "our leader demanded Dutch to return it' Did you consult the Papuans ? The Morning star flag was made by Nicolaas Jouwe, a PAPUAN and yes the anthem may have been made by a Dutchman, it doesn't mean it can't be reclaimed by the people. For instance, Canada's national anthem was originally not meant for the whole country but only the French part. Now it's a different story. IF you've read the article, you'll see that the flag and the anthem was chosen by a majority-papuan council thus chosen BY the people. By the way, didn't you know that Malay and Indonesian are the same language? You can't colonize a people and expect them no to react violently, c'mon! So let's see some context: November 15th 1962: Indonesian troops take over a stretch of road near Sorong and beat up several Papuan policemen December 10th 1962: Indonesian troops open fire on Papuan demonstrators in Merauke injuring two January 17th 1963: Several Papuan nurses beaten up by Indonesian paratroops at Hollandia Hospital. May 4th 1963: All existing Papuan political parties are *banned.* May 14th 1963 Confidential Australian communication reports that the Dutch and Narashimhan have agreed that Papuan self-determination need not involve *any direct voting on the issue by the Papuans* 1965: The OPM is founded Now ask yourselves who are the real terrorists? The Indonesian army who torture, burned down houses and kill people *just* for raising their flag or the Indigenous defending themselves? Papua Merdeka.
@@epg96 "Papuan habitation of the region is estimated to have begun between 42,000 and 48,000 years ago." People were already living there because the empire even existed... Papua Merdeka!

But its different now. Indonesia is more netral and decide to not support any group of nation in their war with the other nation. It because some accident that been happened in the Indonesia Revolutionary periode the result of that Soekarno the father nation of Indonesia and the first president must go down as the Ruler of Indonesia. After that indonesia was controlled by the military. It tooks for some decades to release from the period. It was called Reformation period. It was hapened in 1998. After that the political of Indonesia was more democrasy until now.

Can we pay our respects to the 4 million indonesians who died as slave labour in burma during ww2 by japan and not forget the forced comfort women used by the japaneese during ww2.
The japaneese lied when they said "asia for the asians".
edit:(i miss typed burma as manchuria i got a brain twist after reading about japan in manchuria during ww2)
4 million did not die in Manchuria, rather 4 million died during the war alltogether.
give me sources of those narrative as far i know most died from famine and labor work and as far as Burma railway
Most of Indonesian that had been kidnapped by the Japanese to do force labour is working in Burma, not Manchuria.
@George Nathanael that's true lol, when a western journalist asked why would he ever let that to happen he just said it's was sacrifice we needed to pay for our independence.

You're off to a great start this year! I love this with layout with more comments, makes it easier to get the point :) Well done

Hello Ollie bye I’m new and I like history a lot make history of Australia please
Awesome video. Feels really weird to watch. On one hand I know what the Dutch did there and I like to see empires fall (especially on maps), on the other hand, I get a weird (mostly irrational?) feeling of national pride that just wants to see the Netherlands get its colonies back, I guess being proud of your own country is a bit weird sometimes...
yea, of course! because centuries of enslavement, genocide, rape are something to be proud of.
@bky 09 Yeah, as long as your people aren't the ones being enslaved.
The best way to avoid being part of an empire is becoming the empire.

The Maluku islands are between Sulawesi and Papua
I'm from the Netherlands, and this particular turn of history always interested me. Granted, I've seen it 90% from the Dutch perspective.
But to put it very simply; it was practically the Dutch version of the Vietnam War. (except that Indonesia didn't become a Communist country).
And now the two countries seem quite at peace, on friendly terms even.
Funny you said that because the nvas read a book about an indonesian general while he fought the dutch so don't be suprise if the nvas used the same tactics as indonesia

Read some comments that's so proud of a country that did the genocide, force labor, slavery, and many more... Saying if they were not invading Indonesia how came they developed into the country today.. Of course it's true, you arebpart of this country history... But, really... That's not something you should proud about okay... Like my ancestors were killed by the dutch and japan army, dude.
Huh, as if someone using a cute anime pict on the profile could convince us. Wake up, mate. Proud of it indeed is not okay, but please appreciate for its history, not just knowing nor learning of it. Why are you got trigger? I'm not hating the countries that made Indonesia suffered in the past. I'm just couldn't believe there are people whose proud of that inhuman act. Just put yourself in my shoes, maybe you support their act, maybe you condemn them. I'm not judging you. But, one thing for sure from the family that my great great grandparents still alive.. Amazing quality.

Wow, You finally acknowledged a war that happened after 1945. That's rare. But i know you'd still never do the Syrian Civil War or Portuguese Colonial War.

There is 3 million indigenous in West Papua, how many indigenous people in Australia?
West Papua wasn't "transferred", it was violently invaded and since has been illegally occupied by Indonesia.
It is pretty well-documented, Ollie Bye
www.pedallingforpapua.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Takeover-of-WP-2002.pdf
"our leader demanded Dutch to return it'
Did you consult the Papuans ?
The Morning star flag was made by Nicolaas Jouwe, a PAPUAN and yes the anthem may have been made by a Dutchman, it doesn't mean it can't be reclaimed by the people. For instance, Canada's national anthem was originally not meant for the whole country but only the French part. Now it's a different story.
IF you've read the article, you'll see that the flag and the anthem was chosen by a majority-papuan council thus chosen BY the people.
By the way, didn't you know that Malay and Indonesian are the same language?
You can't colonize a people and expect them no to react violently, c'mon!
So let's see some context:
November 15th 1962: Indonesian troops take over a stretch of road near Sorong and beat up several Papuan policemen
December 10th 1962: Indonesian troops open fire on Papuan demonstrators in Merauke injuring two
January 17th 1963: Several Papuan nurses beaten up by Indonesian paratroops at Hollandia Hospital.
May 4th 1963: All existing Papuan political parties are *banned.*
May 14th 1963 Confidential Australian communication reports that the Dutch and Narashimhan have agreed that Papuan self-determination need not involve *any direct voting on the issue by the Papuans*
1965: The OPM is founded
Now ask yourselves who are the real terrorists? The Indonesian army who torture, burned down houses and kill people *just* for raising their flag or the Indigenous defending themselves?
Papua Merdeka.
