I figured out what was happening and I thought this would be like Mother, but it just swerved in another direction. It should have been more horror like in Mother. The scientist trying to reproduce this cuckoo creature made no sense. They had no real motivation to do any of that stuff they did. It also kinda reminded me of that movie or was it mini series where the killer was the bogeyman that existed throughout the human history and morphed it's body to look like a double and then commit a horrific murder to feed and let the patsy take the fault while he moved on to the next. He also had psychic powers over people and just masked himself living in the corner of the eye like a myth. Can't remember the name of that one. But both better movies than the Cuckoo. Would have been better if there was no scientist and a tourist resort - just plain old monster that hunts down people.
the blonde bird lady was definitely scary...but the action scenes and Doctors running around like Loomis, made it not scary...also reminded of the 1979 movie The Visitor
To explain it, basically just a SCP-ish/Anomaly concept involve humanoids that act in a sort of manor to the Cuckoo bird of brood parasitism pretending to be the young of another bird to be taken care off. Just humanoid creatures and a group that wants to preserve and study them. Taking the SCP Foundation role of securing and testing the anomalies they capture. Just read an SCP article, they're shorter and more creative and terrifying in concept at times.
For me, the story made sense. I knew about the behavior of cuckoo birds beforehand, so I was able to connect the story points while watching the movie. I just wish it was scarier. I would classify this as more of a thriller than a creature feature. I feel like I would have enjoyed the movie more if it went full on horror. Overall, it was a good movie for me.
Yea haven’t seen it but that’s the vibe I get from it. Not scary/horror enough for me to go see. Same with Maxxxine. A scary movie is HARD to make. That’s why we don’t see many
The story made sense because of the brain dead exposition dump in the third act, which was very frustrating to me. Also my biggest gripe with Longlegs. The all time great horror movies are ambiguous. Not having all the answers can be horrifying. Still think ‘Cuckoo’ is a good film and the first 2 acts are gold.
The most impressive thing I’ve seen Stevens in is Gaslit with Julia Roberts as Martha Mitchell, and Stevens as John Dean. It’s based on the brilliant podcast focusing on Mitchell and her story as it pertains to the Watergate scandal! Trust me, it’s an a damn good series with Sean Penn playing John Mitchell in prosthetic makeup, and Shea Whigham as G. Gordon Liddy!
I love how original it is and we need to support indie horror especially when it's original or a new lore story. I do wish it was much scarier and at least one badass gory death but no... Honestly the movie should be PG-13. Seriously, no one really dies from the sub human.
I’m not usually into weird movies but I thought this was okay. 🤷♀️ Lol. Totally see why people wouldn’t like it, though, because it’s really kinda hella weird. Lol. Fun fact I didn’t know till watching this myself … Dan Stevens is fluent in German, which explains him doing that accent so well. 😆
This is a film that, for me, definitely doesn’t answer all the questions. But it answers enough for me to give it a 8/10. Any unanswered questions can be explored in sequels, or just in your head.
I liked it! It was gripping, at times scary and tense, well shot, well acted (especially Dan Stevens), good ost, good and gripping third act. Interesting and a somewhat original concept. Overall, I'm pleasantly surprised. Definitely one of the best horror films of the year. I also noticed many callbacks to other films, such as H18, T2, Die Hard and even a bit of FEAR game, idk maybe it's just me but yeah....8/10! Also, the sound they make is very similar to that of clickers from TLOU
I agree this movie is so bad. I think this movie would’ve worked better as a X-Files episode and not a feature length film. I’m still confused as to why this is considered a horror movie because it’s not scary at all. Also it really doesn’t make sense. If Gretchen’s step mother was impregnated by one of the creatures on her Honeymoon why did they let her travel back to the US? How did they know she would return with the creature’s offspring? Or if she would live at all? Also the creatures are not threatening at all. They actually seem to be pretty controlled and seem to listen to the human “researchers”. Now that I’m thinking about it why are the scientists so fascinated with these creatures? Unless I missed something all they do is make shrieking noises that cause humans to become disoriented for a short time but that’s it. How is this special? You can literally disorientate humans with just regular loud noises or idk one of the many drugs available to scientists and doctors. You really don’t need some supernatural creature to do whatever this is. Also that’s not what Cuckoo birds do!!! Yes they lay their eggs in other bird’s nest BUT they don’t come back for them!!! Cuckoos do this in hopes that their offspring will be favored by the “host” and that the host will neglect their own offspring causing them to die, thus eliminating competition for resources for the Cuckoo birds.

6:36 Read me like a book. Movie has a lot of flaws but I love atmospheric "horror" where youre never really scared but just trying to figure out what the heck is going on. Like Blair Witch and the like.
I just watched it, unfortunately I had seen the trailer for it when I watched Longlegs and I also thought the monster thing was gonna be way freakier. The way it moves in the shots they chose for the trailer made it seem really unnerving and unnatural but for the most part the monster just kinda walked like a normal person? Also in the trailer it said the movie was “blood soaked” but in terms of violence this movie was INCREDIBLY tame. But I liked the film overall, I was just sorta disappointed. Dig the alkaline trio shirt btw
Glad im not the only one, i had to watch a Cuckoo explained video to understand it. So many things just happened, the time loop thing, the flute and the implantation of eggs to be fertilized was just like huh? I mean i get it but not really. Was that Beatrix lady aware of what happens after 10pm? Was she in on it? Didn't seem like it and dad sold the house but left the phone on? Or did the movie take place over the whole summer? I don't know
The time loop thing isn't really a time loop and more of a hypnotic feeling those things instill with their screams. The flute was used to train those things, I think, I admit this part wasn't really explained well. The implantation of the eggs was basically a version of real life, where some cuckoos who are parasitic will lay their eggs in the nests of other birds. These eggs are even similar in color to the eggs of the birds whose nest they invade. The cuckoo is then raised by the other bird. The way this relates to the movie is that these creatures reproduce this way (and might ONLY reproduce this way). Beatrix was most likely not in on it, there's a scene in the movie where Koenig (the bad guy) tells Beatrix's boyfriend to make sure that the act of impregnation doesn't fail this time. Also note that Beatrix is also told to lock up and leave after 10 and the events of the movie kick off when Beatrix swaps shifts with the main character, who oversleeps thus kicking shit off. Houses take time to sell, after the main character has that accident in the first act of the movie, we're not really sure how much time has passed. I assume the phone stayed on while the house was in the process of being sold and then the message tape was sent over along with the other belongings. The other thing that points to this is the message that the little sister leaves for the main character's mom, since the little sister is hospitalized later on, we can assume that she left it a few days before the house was sold. The movie definitely didn't communicate passage of time in the best way. Although I don't really think that's a major flaw. If you've seen an explained video I just leave this comment as my understanding of this movie, please excuse me. I thought the movie was okay, it was decently acted, I wish the concepts were explored more, maybe lean in on less horror and more thriller, or go full on horror with it? It's something that I think you can watch once and feel like it was a good use of your time, but again, that's just my opinion.
@@fitfitter95Beatrix wasn’t in on it, and yea, the flute was used to train them/lure them. I’m guessing the flute has something to do with actual cuckoos (admittedly I know next to nothing about different bird species), but those two bits were things that had to be inferred via dialogue or on-screen actions
@@fitfitter95 good observations, and yeah all that makes sense at first I thought Koenig was a mad scientist creating these creatures but i guess its a fictitious animaI. I feel it's just a little too ambitious. I appreciate this movie and will surely watch again but I'm in no hurry.
I love Germany, German films, I speak German, yet I really thought it was a meh waste of time. It was bizarre. The setting I loved. The pacing was slow or just otherwise wrong. I’m sorry. About a 2-3 out of 10 for me. Didn’t find it scary, just boring and messed up. Others are reporting they loved it. That’s great. I’m normally in agreement with the masses. Not on this one though. I will say-the theater I saw this in last night was nearly sold out. See it and form your own opinion.
REALLY off topic, I really can't get over the Twist in Trapped NOT being that it's his daughter... Do people just not know how to write anymore. It's PERFECTLY set-up twist since the trailers make him a HARD red-haring and M. Night loving twists. Would've been an epic twist because I know normies don't think that deep or know REAL quality writing anymore lol. Instead it's straight forward watching someone who doesn't get scared avoid capture, would've been for more interesting and impressive everything he did if it was to help cover for his daughter. Even going so far as to frame himself... But nope... No one has a brain to write anything good anymore...
Agreed, I remember thinking as I was watching it, "What if the KID is the sadistic one... and dad knows about it, but what she's done is so horrible he can't possibly let anyone know!?" That would've been such a crazy and brutal twist!
Have you seen the Dan Stevens starring FX show Legion? It's my favorite superhero project of the 2010's because it focuses on deep character & practical effects spectacle vs up it's ass lore/self seriousness the MCU & DCU can have. It's also very self contained but does a lot in its 3 seasons with AMAZING work by Stevens as a schizophrenic superhero/villain/antihero/villain at any time.
The trailer was awesome but I was waiting for something to make sense but it feel flat. And the horror behind the story was pointless to what the movie was trying to push. It easily could of been a completely different and better movie if it took itself seriously. Kind of like children of men or touristas.
The disturbing part to me, is the fact that the cuckoo woman thought she could "impregnate" Gretchen when Gretchen is clearly male. Male, knees, male shoulders, male hips, male adams apple etc.unusually tall and prepubescent but obviously male nonetheless. There was going to be a Sleepaway Camp style reveal, when the cuckoo was gonna put its goop into the victims womb, but surprise! Shes a man baby! Or was that gonna be the 'twist' that normally the female cuckoo impregnates the male? A little confusing because Gretchen seems like a typically female name...maybe that confused the cuckoo.
Hey man, not hating but you clearly missed some things in this movie. Like the Cuckoo bird (coo-coo) being a pretty integral part of the story. I can respect opinions but I definitely think a rewatch could answer a lot of questions for you.
I think this movie is ok I don’t think it’s all that great acting and everything but I feel like the story was lack luster like the movie wasn’t scary and the voice shit was kinda cringe ngl I feel like the movie could’ve used a little more story development and make it more horror this movie didn’t feel like a horror movie just a thriller and not even that the first 30 minutes I feel like is what they should’ve stayed with instead of what we got
I think this movie was one of those movies that makes more sense after thinking about what you saw, versus what you were seeing on screen at that moment. I personally thought the story could have been better in terms of being complete. I thought the concepts, settings, and characters were fantastic. However, I think the execution of the plot is where I'll admit it fell a bit flat. It was pieced together in a way that was so eccentric and made you question what you were even watching SO often, that it lost its merit. It made the entire story seemingly make no sense, or almost like things could have been avoided easily if the character had made one move differently. I think it was made like that though to leave it open for question. I think they were going for that kind of movie that just leaves you asking "What and Why?" with no real answers or definitive solutions to the question/problem. I personally liked that it was different, but then again, I wasn't really a fan of the movie Infinity Pool which had a similar premise and vibe to it.
I don't know if you realize this, but lately you have been the opposite of everybody else in your reviews lately!!! For example, every other channel I saw so far loved this movie!!! But, that's what is great about opinions!!
I loved it! Was I utterly confused by what was going on? Yes. But so was Hunter Schafer’s character. It added to the disorienting and unsettling situation she was in. I have a lot of questions left over but I think I like that about it
The monster was boring poorly explained and disappointing. Mute Humans who scream loud and making you trip but can be blocked out easily with headphones and can also be shot killed just like a human
I haven’t seen this one yet. I don’t think we have it in Ireland yet but I’ll probably give it a go, weird though it is 😂 WTF is it with the need to make weird-ass movies right now.
i honestly wanted to like this movie soooo badly! i did not. the decisions that were made by the lead character were kinda dumb. and yes, why did they show us the main monster during the promotions. the whole thing is just was just a dumpster fire. i gave it a 4/10
How did you watch this entire film and come out of it not knowing how to pronounce the title? It's the bird...the clock...Coo Coo is the pronunciation. It's painfully obvious and a huge part of the plot. 😬
This movie was a 0 out of 10 for me not scary at all just mid the story was interesting for the first 30 minutes and then fell off with a shitty all over the place story that had shit ideas and poor execution
I don’t think this guy saw the movie. They literally pronounced the title three times in the movie. Six if you count the clock which was pretty on the nose.
Just finished reading the synopsis. So outside of a MINOR SCP Foundation tribute feel, like this could be an SCP species I can see on the wiki. There's stranger and more abstract SCPs. Outside of that... Eh... I'm losing touch with normies. I've consumed so much more mind-blowing and creative media created by ONE human online, that things like this and Trapped (which I thought the twist would be that his DAUGHTER is the killer and he's the brains keeping her from being caught because he loves her that much, sounds cooler, right?) are just... Trash. Final word, Henry is BASED and the real tragic hero of the film. I don't care how harsh it sounds, he's right to want to take out Alma too. When it comes to a say a VERY dangerous SCP like 096 (Shy Guy), I'm all for just ending it ANY way you can instead of trying to secure it, too dangerous if ANYONE sees and doesn't even notice 2 pixels of it's face. You could call this Cuckoo SCP species Euclid and containable, but REALISTICALLY the most based decision is to kill it. They aren't animals, they're humanoid creatures that live SOLEY through parasitism. I'd consider them closer to a cosmic roach in human skin that is a threat to humanity. End EVERY trace of them. The ending is just modern female YA nonsense lol. Like a Tumblrian trying to write an SCP fanfic and it semi being some Twilight fanfic with an SCP lol. Nah, if they wanted a more badass ending, either Henry does succeeding in ending the Cosmic Cuckoo roaches (I'm gonna call them) or Alma goes full Cuckoo and murderers her sister and Konig's preservation plan succeeds. Again ending it female/feminist YA nonsense of: "NEITHER MAN GETS WHAT THEY WANT!" And being a well predictive schizo, I'll as far as to say that IS the subtle messaging with that ending stand-off between Henry and Konig. Like Anti-Feminist vs. Male Feminist. So this film can shove it. Go read an SCP article or listen to one on TH-cam. You'd be far more impressed as the creativity and horror a single person can come up with.
@WeWatchedAMovie I dunno man, the last 10 or 15 minutes felt like it laid it out a little too simply for audiences. Almost felt like they were holding my hand and making sure I understood. I'm not usually too much into the whole 'croissant' of things, but it reminded me of old 80s body horror that I'd stumble upon in my cousin's collection of weird dvds as a kid. I really expected you to dig it man!
@BeardedBushMan81 I said just as much in my second comment. Apparently, that still wasn't enough for some people...like Mike for instance lol I found it pretty cut and dry personally.
Just finished it definitely a shitty movie idk how anyone could like this it what’s this movie even about lmfao 😂 experiments gone bad and whatever happened to the father or step dad and his wife and the end whenever they leave the hospital the wife got sick and it never explains why or what happened
Kinda surprised some people seem to not understand the story. It's very spelled out towards the end. Idk for me it was a solid movie, not super scary tho, and it did fall apart towards the end with too many contrivances.

"I get it but not really" is honestly the perfect answer. It's simple but they explained it like shit
I hear people loved this film. Ur thr first who said they hated it
I love Germany, German films, I speak German, yet I really thought it was a meh waste of time.
That's okay with me!
Love the Alkaline trio shirt . What an underrated band in their early years 🤯 🤯
They are still rocking too! Their last two albums have been killer
See you tonight big boy…
Have you seen the Dan Stevens starring FX show Legion? It's my favorite superhero project of the 2010's because it focuses on deep character & practical effects spectacle vs up it's ass lore/self seriousness the MCU & DCU can have. It's also very self contained but does a lot in its 3 seasons with AMAZING work by Stevens as a schizophrenic superhero/villain/antihero/villain at any time.
I haven't but it looked dope
Hunter is a trans woman but she is playing a female in this film, full stop. Her being trans is NOT part of the plot and isn't even relevant.
You the best mike!
Thank you amigo
Hey man, not hating but you clearly missed some things in this movie. Like the Cuckoo bird (coo-coo) being a pretty integral part of the story. I can respect opinions but I definitely think a rewatch could answer a lot of questions for you.
I appreciate it but I didn't mean to convey I didn't understand what was going on....I understood. I just thought it was told very poorly.
I think this movie is ok I don’t think it’s all that great acting and everything but I feel like the story was lack luster like the movie wasn’t scary and the voice shit was kinda cringe ngl I feel like the movie could’ve used a little more story development and make it more horror this movie didn’t feel like a horror movie just a thriller and not even that the first 30 minutes I feel like is what they should’ve stayed with instead of what we got
i thought this one was ok but i dont get why dan stevens was doing all that it never really was explained
4:06 was wondering when you were going to get real
I don't know if you realize this, but lately you have been the opposite of everybody else in your reviews lately!!! For example, every other channel I saw so far loved this movie!!! But, that's what is great about opinions!!
I honestly don't look at many others reviews lol so I did not realize that but I'm cool with it!
I loved it! Was I utterly confused by what was going on? Yes. But so was Hunter Schafer’s character. It added to the disorienting and unsettling situation she was in. I have a lot of questions left over but I think I like that about it
Good to know how easy it is to entertain you... 👍
@@sideskroll yep! All it takes is good acting, good directing, and an original idea!
@@andrewschumm8253 And no logical plot whatsoever. Got it.
The monster was boring poorly explained and disappointing. Mute Humans who scream loud and making you trip but can be blocked out easily with headphones and can also be shot killed just like a human
I gave it a six for filming and acting. But the story was poor.
I liked it just because of how crazy some of it was
I loved this movie, so stylish
First half was good but second half was messy
I haven’t seen this one yet. I don’t think we have it in Ireland yet but I’ll probably give it a go, weird though it is 😂
WTF is it with the need to make weird-ass movies right now.
Cool shirt!
This movie was good but not as good as Longlegs.
Longlegs was trash
I think Cuckoo was a total disappointment
❤ Longlegs is SO SO GOOD! + uses the Cuckoo bird theme so well and purposeful!
Horror movies now are good at putting you to sleep it’s just rinse and repeat
i honestly wanted to like this movie soooo badly! i did not.
the decisions that were made by the lead character were kinda dumb. and yes, why did they show us the main monster during the promotions. the whole thing is just was just a dumpster fire.
i gave it a 4/10
Me too!
Eh Hunter Schafer is not a great actor. He reminds me of Kristen Stewart in Twilight
And what is up with the time travel hypothesis. Nothing but great acting gone to waste
How did you watch this entire film and come out of it not knowing how to pronounce the title? It's the bird...the clock...Coo Coo is the pronunciation. It's painfully obvious and a huge part of the plot. 😬
Its an awful film lmao
Did the movie make you feel like you’re in Armageddon, let the light in? Before we say goodbye give us something to believe in with this review!
🤣🤣🤘
lmao
You went thru childhood not knowing the name of a famous bird? Wow. Schools have failed you. Sorry. 😂
Watched this movie last night and I’m genuinely still confused at what even went on
This movie was a 0 out of 10 for me not scary at all just mid the story was interesting for the first 30 minutes and then fell off with a shitty all over the place story that had shit ideas and poor execution
Why has all the horror movies suck ass lately
It’s pronounced coo coo, as in cuckoo clock.
I was so lost watching this movie. I almost walked out.
I don’t think this guy saw the movie. They literally pronounced the title three times in the movie. Six if you count the clock which was pretty on the nose.
All the good parts were in the trailer honesltly
really they were now that I go back and watch it
Isn't that the last name of the Big Bang Theory chick?
No idear
Kaley. Her last name is Cuoco.
That's interesting
The lead kinda took it down for me.
damn why?

The story makes sense if you know how cuckoo birds operate. I thought it was fantastic!
I wasn’t aware of how the behave until the movie described their behavior, and this made complete sense to me start to finish.
I mean I get that I just thought they did a terrible job explaining it. But I'm glad you dug it!
What do you mean “if you know how cuckoo birds operate”? They literally explain it in the movie. 😂
@BeardedBushMan81 I said just as much in my second comment. Apparently, that still wasn't enough for some people...like Mike for instance lol I found it pretty cut and dry personally.
Just tap out if u can't figure out how to pronounce Cuckoo for Christ's sake.
the movie failed to be horror ,disappointed :(
It’s like the clock haha
The whole rewinding thing was annoying
and the constant screaming
I agree it actually served no purpose at all
@@WeWatchedAMovie I said thank god when she uses the switchblade on her lmaoo
Just finished it definitely a shitty movie idk how anyone could like this it what’s this movie even about lmfao 😂 experiments gone bad and whatever happened to the father or step dad and his wife and the end whenever they leave the hospital the wife got sick and it never explains why or what happened
Loooove this honesty. From what you said sounds like yet another non sense woke croissant. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
Total croissant, lol. Thank you!
Movie was terrible AF
Weird for the sake of just being weird. No story that was interesting.
Kinda surprised some people seem to not understand the story. It's very spelled out towards the end.
Idk for me it was a solid movie, not super scary tho, and it did fall apart towards the end with too many contrivances.
I understood it but it was told poorly imo
