I've survived freezing temps on Baldy a number of times. To do it, you need the proper equipment, mountaineering boots, expedition grade parka, four season tent like a Bibler, plenty of fuel for a stove, etc. If she planned a day hike without expedition gear for on overnight stay, she was doomed.

  • @wcoastbo

Sad story. She was not the first to die on Mt Baldy nor will she be the last. I have mt biked in all the major mountain ranges in and near Los Angeles, before I leave I try to have a plan, but I can't foresee all possible problems. It seems like she also had a plan and her friends knew where she was. Sadly, it happened again.
Many unfortunate deaths have occurred in the wilderness areas around Los Angeles. From the beaches to mountains to deserts. I think being so close to a major metropolitan area as big as Los Angeles, it gives people a false sense of security. The mentality creeps in that it's not dangerous here. How can it be, there are millions of people within eyesight? We are all human and can succumb to the same mentality. Accidents can happen, if you're alone help may not arrive in time. I've been alone many times in the wilderness.
    May she rest in peace.

Never underestimate the elements folks! Especially if you're on your own. This brought to memory a friend's story when they went hiking in Mt Ruapehu (New Zealand) last spring. Clear sunny day, light winds, but it was still pretty cold especially on the snowy portions of the mountain. Halfway on their way down, my friends encountered 2 young guys on their way up (probably tourists), wearing only t-shirt and jeans, and normal rubber shoes. My friends chatted them up asked "don't you guys have jackets at least, it's pretty cold up there!", and the guys said "it's fine, it's sunny and we'll be sweating from the exertion anyway". Thinking the guys were old enough to know when to turn back if it gets too cold, my friends continued their hike downhill. About an hour later, a rescue chopper came and rescued those same two guys because they collapsed from hypothermia. Luckily for them, there were other hikers that day who helped them out. My friends could only shake their heads in disbelief.

Winter hiking, especially by yourself, is a terrible idea. Please do not go hiking in the wilderness , by yourself, at any time of the year, especially if you are inexperienced. It is extremely dangerous in so many ways.

it makes no sense why they couldn't find her easily with all the drone technology we have and how easy it is operate drones....you don't need helicopters, cost too much, too slow to organize it, but with drones, they could have just had like a dozen or so fly around with cameras and find her within a day easy. We are seeing how easy drones are being used in the Ukraine war...millions of drones being used. They couldn't use a dozen drones in Mt. Baldy?? Sounds strange to me. Also, every hiker should carry around mandatory flare packs. In case you get lost u can fire flares into the air to leave a distinct colored powder stain in the air and they'd find you easily again. What about starlink?? Just connect it to your phone and go to a higher elevation area and bam, you can be found easily.

Anyone remember the previous video where they interviewed her friend? She had a big smile on her face and told interviewers that her friend was okay, and that she was just lost. She really belived that she was going to either be found alive, or somehow find her own way back home. I wonder how she feels now that the news of her death has dropped.
