BRIGGS and STRATTON COIL ARMATURE MAGNETO REPAIR NO SPARK
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 27 มี.ค. 2012
- This is a video of the coil or armature magneto being replaced from a Briggs and Stratton 12HP Lawnmower engine. They can also be called an Ignition module or Ignition coil. If you are not getting spark in your spark plug, this might be your answer. If not, check all your safety button switches too. Also, symptoms of the mower not staying running or stopping after heating up can be the armature magneto too.

I hadn't changed the spark plug th-cam.com/users/postUgkx-6W-PtUzBRTmACHywsECak2ToY2OpjxN in my Toro 20" Recycler in the 6 years I've had it but have been good with all other maintenance. This season I noticed it sputtering a little bit every so often and just didn't feel like it was running as smoothly or as powerful as it used to. Switched out the spark plug for a new one yesterday and could immediately tell an improved difference. So I may have to make this a little more regular than every 6 years, especially for a $5 part!
i liked that you had the engine cover screws out already instead of making people wait while you videoed you running around looking for the right screw driver! I knew the rest would be good when I saw you had done that!
Thanks for the simple fix. I do believe this is my problem. I already ordered the coil and now I can replace it with confidence. I was a little concerned about the spacing but the card hack is what I needed. Thanks and God bless you. JAH
Great video... thanks for your effort.
I have a 12 year old JD walk behind. It's got about 15 hours on it and has been in storage for about 10 years. There is no spark. Thanks to your vid, I now know the first thing I am going to check and likely replace. I have never been into one of these and you have shown me how easy it can be.
THANK YOU.
Thank you Sir. Just bought a Craftsman self propelled mower and someone took the key and pushbutton start off and I am beginning to learn to fix lawn mowers myself. Wanted to buy a magneto but you may have helped me solve my problem with the card trick. Thanks so much.
Thanks a lot! This video might be right for my new lawnmower. I used it only about a dozen times in one year. Immediately after the one-year warranty was over, the lawnmower stopped working. I will check the spark, as you advised, and take it from there.
Thanks for an easy explanation and stable camera. My new Briggs & Stratton lost spark and it could have been because vibration caused armature nuts to loosen. Unfortunately, I didn't really use the mower until after my 1-year warranty ended. So, your video might save me a repair cost. I'm surprised that the engine malfunctioned right off the bat. This is a first.
Alright, thats great! Glad it helped, thanks for watching!
It also helps to take a wire brush to the flywheel and get some of the rust off for better contact and nut drivers work better than box wrenches.
While I did not need the new part, watching this showed me how to adjust the magneto, which solved my no-spark problem. Many thanks.
Oh good! Glad it helped! Thanks for watching!
thanks Ryker,
It has been years since I did this and your vid brought it all back to me. Good job
Excellent video, one of the best I've seen for the B & S small engines. Thanks !
thank you very much, however the video quality is poor compared to today, but thanks
Great video...clear, concise, extremely helpful!
Very well done. Simple directions and easy to follow. I am the Forrest Gump of all things mechanical, and I think I can do this after watching you video. Thanks
the ryker. thanks man. took me 20 minutes and I was cutting grass again. Awesome advice
I just finished fixing a problem that drove me wild for a few days. No spark....hmmm. Removed the cover. Cleaned the coil where it mounts to the case with sandpaper to ensure a good electrical connection. I also sanded the flywheel until it was clean and free of dirt and rust. Reassembled everything and still no spark. Being it was only a flywheel and the coil I assumed the problem was the coil. I ordered the OEM Briggs coil from Amazon ($30). I installed it and still no spark...aaarrrggghhh!!! I finally had an idea that I hadn’t thought of.....disconnect the grounding wire that is attached to the little tab on the coil. I pulled that little spade connector off and reassembled the cover and viola. It started and ran. I couldn’t believe it. I chased this problem for days only to find out that the safety mechanism that grounds out the spark when the handle is released was the cause of the problem. It was permanently disabling (grounding out) the coil whether the handle was pulled in or not. Moral of the story.....when chasing a no spark problem and you’re down to the coil disconnect the spade lug at the coil in order to omit that as a possible cause.
wow thanks alot for your comment and info, it will help everyone
Thank you! Saved me a lot of time
Good job with the video, thanks for putting it out there, very helpful!
you are welcome!
Concise and to the point, good video!
you are welcome!
Hi great video ,do these engines have points and condenser under flywheel?
regards
Thanks. this video was very helpful to rework my machine in Brazil.
I've been looking for the gap measurement for hours now. I know the rest of the install process, but thanks for the gap tip, problem now solved!
.010 or ten thousands
Great video! Just ran into this today! I'm doing the exact same repair for my Allis Chalmers I just got the other day for 50$.
Hopefully it'll work!
Thanks for this video and the tip to turn the flywheel.
I wouldn't have known to do that
Thank you, I appreciate you taking the time
Many Thanks, you explained it perfectly. Best wishes from UK.
Well thanks a lot John Wiggy , I am glad I could help you out. its great to hear that people across the pond are watching my vids too! Thanks
Thank you. I may have the same problem on my 3 mowers. None want to turn over, make a clicking noise. I often get overwhelmed with the 'simplicity' of repairs because of not knowing trouble shooting methods.
this video helped out so much on my 20 horse b&s engine, my battery never did get a charge when it was running and i figure it was the magnetos, im 13 and dont know how to repair the magneto so thank you very very much
I did replace the coil, so it now has a good one!👍😃
Keep it up with these kickass helpful videos
thank u that helped me out alot i watched this at midnight and went to work on my mower while watching this vid tanks
Thank you! I wish I had watched this video before I took mine in to find out why the magneto wasn't helping, LOL. It turned out that it was the gap. Fortunately, the guys at the shop didn't charge me but they did get a good laugh, I'm sure. :)
very informative and clear instruction.
Outstanding work. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and skill,,, and this is coming from a Duke fan!!:-)
There you go! Good job, glad it helped!
QUESTION Good video. I have a 6.5 hp Briggs & Stratton. Replaced ignition module, followed same procedure and no spark. Any thoughts?
No prob, glad it helped! Thanks for watching!
Thanks so much, just saved myself 200 euros looking at this! 👌👍
Thanks for the video. It has helped a lot.
Got the same exact engine from the same exact mower. The mowers gone but I kept the engine and I rebuilt it to new condition. Still got it
Hey can you help?? I have a Briggs and Stratton ride on mower and it has a magneto spark generator it has the spark plug wire and another wire think to ignition. Where onto the ignition? Live or neutral ? Also have similar magneto on other side of engine with one black wire ?? Any ideas would help
Thats great! I hope it helped you out and got it going, thanks for watching!
How did you determine it was the armature and not the eletronic trigger module under the flywheel where the points used to be on older engines, is it built into the coil on this model-? The modules tended to fail a lot more often than the magnetos do, at least in my experience.
really well done...no unessasary talk or nut removal...just do this thi....and this....others should take note....just the facts mam,.....just the facts
PHIL gram you are welcome, hope it helped!
Great info spatman
Great tip. Thank you so much
Thanks! Helped me out tremendously! Go Tigers!
Go Tigers!
After I cleaned up the points to make smoother connection and reconnected a couple wires, I put the flywheel back on. I had to do some sanding of the magneto legs since the smaller engine I took the magneto off of had a flywheel with a smaller radius. So I got the working magneto all set with the proper distance and everything. Surely enough, after spinning the flywheel, the spark plug sparked! So I put some starter spray stuff into the gas intake and the stuff ignited and everything!
You are welcome! Glad it helped!
worked great thanks
A good informative video. cheers
Yes thats possible, definitely connect that back, but sometimes your ground wire can be the issue too. Also check your safety switches if you have any.
Thank you for the good info!
I have and ignition coil that’s bad but can find the right one. It’s coming off a intek Briggs and Stratton engine. 12.5 Hp. Need help
Great tip using the business card, thank you!!!!
Do the 5 HP Briggs without starter motor have the grounding wire as well to the Magneto?
You are welcome! To check this, just follow the wire from your spark plug. See what it is connected to and check the connections and the rubber to see if it is cracked .
Yes, you could try it and see if it works. It won't hurt it, just might not have enough spark possibly. Let me know if it works...thanks
Thanks for sharing - It'll solve my problem on my Snapper 13HP motor.
Antoine - from France
you are very welcome!
Thank you for the video.....huge help
sand the corrosion off the magnet first, most of the time, that is the cause of low or no spark. It's a good thing to do even if you do end up replacing the magneto.
Wire wheel both bolt surfaces, coil n flywheel , set gap at .010 ... install new plug ... often works ...
thanks for the help I managed to finally get a spark and got the old briggs running
Awesome! Glad it helped you!
Very nicely done. Go Tigers!!
thats awesome, thanks for the info on being able to do that. Thats cool it worked, hope it wasn't too much modification.....later
You are welcome, glad I could help!
Very well done!
thanks
No Problem! Glad I could help!
Great video, first one that showed me exactly what I needed to know and not a bunch of useless chatter.
Great tips. I will let you know if it works..
Thanks a lot for the good info!
Great! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the tip!
Very good video,Thanks
Thank you! I think this will solve my problem.
thats great!
What is the correct air gap on the ignition coil/magneto? I have heard .012k and .010k any one know? Thanks
thanks this video was very helpful my 8hp briggs will not get a spark but now i know wat too do thinks too you
oh I see. Yep that would do it. Glad you fixed it and I don't think that sensor is too expensive. You will be ready to cut grass in no time!
I've got a 10 HP Briggs with a broken magneto. I found another magneto from a 2.5 HP engine that appears to be the same shape and size and will fit. Would it work/be a good idea for me to use the magneto from the 2.5HP engine on the 10 HP? I might need to since the Briggs is very old and I can't find any info for it online.
Good Video, gotta ask, is there a dirt track close to your home ? sounded like a Late model gassin it in the back ground ?
Excellent advice thank you
+A Driver you are welcome!
could this also fix my problem that I have when I run my riding mower for about 10 minutes and then it dies out? im almost certain it is the coil because when its a cold start it has no problems but when I it gets hot it cuts off.... but when i do initially start the mower it has no problems running only until 10 miutes later
Alright thanks for the info! Thanks for watching!
Funny cause I thought ours was the only one. Hadn't seen another one like it till I saw this video. Have you worked on the governer gear inside as it is vague on how to install it. I lined it up with the governer arm and put the crankcase cover on . Everything seems fine but when I turn the flywheel back ants forth there's a loud knock. Everything was torqued to spec so I was wondering if it has to do with the governer
It was the second ground wire from the coil that went to a thermal shut off that may have over heated from when it was racing at a high RPM After disconnecting that it started right up.. I have to drain the oil to change that censer . It is my generator motor .. Thanks for your response Ryker ..
Great video
Great Vid!! And, that's my exact mower!! My mower was running fine and then just died and wouldn't restart. It turns over fine and I primed the carb but still won't. I checked for spark at the plug conection and it doesn't seem to be getting any (will retest to make sure). Could this still be a magneto problem? If so, what magneto do I shop for?
Thanks!!!
Excellent information.
+Thetrucky69 you are welcome!

hello i have bad or very low spark what it can be the problem?
I have a 8hp briggs on a what I think is a 70s (vertical shaft) and my coil still has magnetism but it wont fire I think it is the coil but I don't know and I also don't know where I can get one
how about if you have a spark but it still wont start, can the mower start with the shut off wire disconnected
This is a very useful video and I used your instructions to replace my ignition magneto successfully. However, I wanted to make viewers know that my problem ended up being a sticky choke. There is another TH-cam video "Briggs & Stratton choke service 31P977" that shows you how to remove, clean, and lubricate a B&S choke.
good job . one thing I would recommend....after removing the old coil, file the top of both post to insure good connection s when bolting down new coil ". jmo" but why not since you're already there and takes 30 seconds .
thank you very precise and knowledgeable I will get one for my lawn mower
You are welcome!
If the ignition system does not give a spark then what could be the issue?
a ground wire. you need to check that.
so on these models w armature magneto no need to pull ribbed flywheel to clean points like in the older models..correct? because points r no longer there..under flywheel
Yes. No morepoints
They are electronic ignition coils
thats a great idea, Also small engine shops charge about 35-45 bucks as well. I would still only buy a new one off of Ebay though. Not used.
Great video my 21 horsepower is still not getting spark and I change the ignition coil and spark plug still no spark any suggestions
yep this can be a tricky fix, its hard to know without looking at it
Thank you for the information....I been having issues and I suspect this is it...
good luck!
Turns out my issue was the "interlock unit". Looks like a big fuse with about five wires come from it.
Thanks so much for the video.. I have a question..can you use a magneto off of a Briggs 14.5 OHV on a Briggs 17.5 OHV engine
As long as it is the same size yes, possible its different and won't fit on there right, also if it doesn't work then it might not be big enough to spin the flywheel. Thanks for watching.
ok, no problem. Glad it helped!
Thanks so much! I knew I would get comments on my shirt! Thanks for watching!
What about the "monkey wrench"
hey ive got a question. I have no spark on this 2hp engine.Ive adjusted the magneto but still no spark. Could it be that the red wire comeing from behind the flywheel isnt connected to anything(there is a ground wire thats there and copper wire leading from behind the flywheel)and is causing all the trouble?
