Your suggestion to unplug the kill wire to see if you get spark is what worked for me. I am rewiring a push button start and suddenly it would not run. I spent hours trying to troubleshoot thinking it was a safety switch problem, turns out it was a kill switch grounding problem. Thank you so much.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!.I did a lot of work on my riding mower due to it leaking oil. Put it back together and it would start. It ran before. Checked the coil and had it upside down! You said it was marked and it was. Started right up. You saved my butt. Thank you so much. Norman.
my brother from another brother you have just shown the best and fastest and most efficient test on checking a maggy she can bite and we don't like biters do we. nice touch on showing position of ground wire `when installing mag thank you for your time nice listening to tec talk the right way bless the wantabees you just saved a few good on you brother take care thanks
One thing I like about this video, they don't spend 10 minutes explaining what every part is, and another 10 minutes of video disassembling. We know where the screws are. Thanks for a short informative video. Great Job. Love the accent BTW, "I like a way you talk"... (I talk like that too)
Great video. It is a big help. I'm working on a 14.5 OHV with no spark. I pulled the ground wire and still no spark. You confirmed my suspicion. Bad magneto. I always like to check before buying new. Thanks for the help.
thanks, very helpful and definitely thumbs up for showing the start with the jumper cables. I hadn't thought of that and was trying to turn key and hold down clutch and reaching for the front of the mower. This was huge.
Make sure battery can spin engine fast enough. 4 Days chasing no spark issue, watched 50 videos, tried everything. Had charger on battery and kill switch disconnected. Put charger in jump mode and nice hot spark. I had been charging battery to 100%, but it was too weak. New battery fixed problem. Found a 300CCA battery to replace 3.5 year old 150 CCA battery. No more issues! I don't remember where I saw that 350 RPM minimum requirement, but only saw/heard it one time.
Jean , Try a smaller socket ,or one that will fit on the screw tighter , or a pair of pliers , or cut a grove in the head for a flat screw driver or a cold chisel . What ever you do don't break the leg off of the motor that it screws into . Whizkid
99carnot, I haven't had much experience with these coil setups , but as I know what a diode does in electrical terms , then I guess that it's there to stop one coil from back feeding into the other one when the kill wire is energized by grounding it out . Whizkid
Can you explain how to check a diode in the ground wires on the coils of a v twin? I am only firing on 1 cylinder and it would not start with both coil ground wires connected. I have one ground wire off and mower will start. Both coils put out spark. But running on 1 coil.
Do you have an idea of why we would have continuous ignition coil failures on a B & S 19.5? they fail after only 3-4 minutes of run time. We have had 3 failures. Thank you.
+ melodymaker When I was a young kid, my Dad took me and my middle brother out to pick our family some strawberries at a strawberry patch one time and while we were there I told my Dad I had to pee. We were out in the country and the only people there so my Dad told me " Just pee over there outside the patch and onto that wire ". There was this wire running along the patch about 2 feet above the ground along the outside of the patch so I did what he said. ZAP !!! I jumped about 3 feet off of the ground and once I landed I started yelling all sorts of colorful words that an 8 year old shouldn't be saying. He had me piss on a charged electrical wire meant to keep deer out of the strawberry patch, the shit head. lol. Sure wasn't funny at the time though. Wow !!!
What's going on , when the coil is hooked to the spark plug, but won't fire, or spark, or start. However, if you ground the coil and crank it, it sparks, - good. The old coil wasn't firing, and I replaced it with a new one, and it's not firing too. It can be started with a key, or a pull rope. It's a self propelled walked behind. It will start sometimes with the pull rope. What's up with that?
.Hi there, l have a 2 hp Suzuki that is like a new engine, never really used from 89. I just bought it. lt looks like it has an ignition problem. No spark. ....its getting fuel to the carb, but totally no spark. disconnected the stop switch, just in case the fault lied there. No, go. l am scared to start tearing into it. Do you think l need to look at the magneto, points? where the HV wire goes to. l am scared to take apart the pull cord in case its spring-loaded or something. And if l have to take off the flywheel, have l then fucked up the timing. l really am scared to get over my ability but at the same time do not want to pay for a mechanic to look at it. because it will then not be a good buy. Any advice appreciated.
I would like to know where you get a spark tester with a window. It sounded like you said you got it from a Briar Tester place but I could not understand your Vowels? Please print the name of the seller and print it out so I can understand you! Thanks. Bud.
Jack , I don't have a Ford Taurus to do a test on , but I do have a 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera that I've been planning on doing a fuel pump test on for the last year but haven't been able to do it yet. Whizkid
After I have set my valves on my single cylinder briggs, the mower cranked and ran very good. A couple of weeks later it acts like the valves are needing to be set again. any ideas
Ok I have something you guys can answer maybe. I have a brigs motor just like yours showing there. I get spark from one spark plug as long as i have a spark testor hooked up. When i unhook the testor it gets no spark to the plug. Why?
What about the safety switches? If I'm not mistaken, the safety switches (like under the seat) will keep the magneto from sending voltage to the spark plug too. Or am I wrong?
+Jorge duarte = YES !!! NOTE: It doesn't take a lot of Power to run these. So even with a CHEAP one, it will run. Just make sure the Holes and the GAP lined up.... Search around... It's about $8-$10 most and free shipping too!
got a question for anyone , have the same motor on my mower, stator went out, and someone wired it straight, bypassing diode. put s new stator on and it still want crank. and I do mean stator not starter, stator is under flywheel and keeps battery charged. any help please.
Just ran across this video. Not sure if you still need help but here goes anyway. The stator only charges the battery. It has nothing to do with the mower starting and running. If you want to check it and the mower runs, start it up and take the positive cable off of the battery (while it's running). If it keeps running, your stator is working. If it dies, stator is bad. There should be an inline fuse between the stator and the battery as well. Make sure to check that. If your familiar with how to use a multimeter, you can check if any current is coming out of the stator while it's running also. There are videos on how to use the multimeter too.
Now I know why my mower won't restart easily when hot. I just eye balled it when I put my magneto on. I should have measured the clearance with a feeler gauge before removing it, but I was in a rush.
Another great video, Mr. Fixit! Right on! I dig it, man! Hey, do you think you could make a video on testing a fuel pump on a Ford Taurus (or any in-tank electric fuel pump)?
eBay :) - Cheap too !!! NOTE: Most of these are the SAME THING... Just different Hole drilled... But if you search hard enough.... It's about $8-$10 with Free Shipping!
*NOTE:* If anyone reading this.... Take the Spark Plug out. This will " alleviate compression " and it will crank easier and less power to crank as well :). Also, your Motor will spin freely and faster. This will make the " Magneto " even stronger (unless bad). But also help you diagnostic even faster and better with your Magneto / Ignition Coil / Armature !!!
WVMachinist, I'm guessing that your motor is OHV . If so, then it's the valves that need adjusting. If your motor has a pressure relief valve on the cam then it could be bad and you need to replace the cam . ( It could have both ) . Is your battery good ? Fully charged with enough amps for your motor ? Check all connections . Check grounds . Charging system good ? Whizkid
I noticed you failed to disconnect the kill wire before testing for spark. Heck, something (bad safety switch?) could be grounding out the kill wire. And what about the seat safety switch? That will kill the spark when it's not disconnected.
this may sound odd i can remember replacing 1coil on an eng it was on an outboard eng been wokring on eng all my adult life offf an on --im 87 now so this dont happen that often those things are well made just got thru wiring an old craftsman with 20 hp twin kohler
I have a throttle issue. I think I got spark, but a spark doesn't mean magneto isn't bad. I'd sure like to get my wood chipper working. I didn't break flywheel key.
Man just stick a good spark plug in the HT lead and put the spark plug to earth if you a spark a good blueish spark then it's ok if not then its buggered mate no need for you to spend money on testers
This is the BEST and SIMPLEST lesson on this subject on TH-cam. I learned more from this than any other video.
, what would cause my motor to overheat really fast
Your suggestion to unplug the kill wire to see if you get spark is what worked for me. I am rewiring a push button start and suddenly it would not run. I spent hours trying to troubleshoot thinking it was a safety switch problem, turns out it was a kill switch grounding problem. Thank you so much.

This was great. Nice to see someone with some common sense tell us how simple this is..

Thanks for the tip on setting the flywheel - magneto gap with a business card! Quick and easy and it works!
I was taught more from this video today than any teacher i had in school. Thank you very much, good video.
Thank you. One of the best videos I have seen. Very clear and easy to understand.

I dearly loved listening to this fellow talk. Even more, I learned considerably more from his instruction than other sites I've accessed. Thanks!
great job! i fixed my mower. i appreciate your videos. thank you!!!!
thanks whizkid! I now have a clue as to what could be the problem with my 94 lawn boy.
Well described procedure. Thanks for your time with the video.Thumbs up!
Wanted to say thanks. Didn't know about the coil upside down. Fixed my ROOKIE mistake.
Had my coil upside down, fixed now thanks for the tip.

Can you explain how to check a diode in the ground wires on the coils of a v twin? I am only firing on 1 cylinder and it would not start with both coil ground wires connected. I have one ground wire off and mower will start. Both coils put out spark. But running on 1 coil.
Thanks for the college course. Dealing with coil problems. Now I have a plan.....:)
Cnb4How do you change the solenoid on a riding lawnmower how do you change the Silla noise on a riding lawn mower
Thank you very much. Crap rototiller seems to have same problem. no spark. will check everything you went over.
Do you have an idea of why we would have continuous ignition coil failures on a B & S 19.5?
they fail after only 3-4 minutes of run time. We have had 3 failures. Thank you.
if it's a magneto it's possible something is shorting out the coil. If it's a regular ignition coil the voltage may be too high.
Hey Jr,, GREAT point about having the ground terminal on bottom, Thanks
I bought a twin that has a cut spark plug wire. Can I remove the rest of the wire and put a new one on? Or so I need a new coil?
new coil
Cameron already have a new coil. Thanks though.
Undoubtedly, this guy knows what he's doing.
Thank You, that was the information I was looking for.
I know a easy way to test the magneto. Have somebody hold the spark plug connector, then turn the motor. If they don't move, the magneto is bad.
Is this safe or is it like a joke lol? I'm new to this
it's both. Don't turn the motor to fast. If the magneto is good the assistant will jump.
he will jump and insult you.
it's a joke, the plug will knock you on your ass...never touch it!

Do the authorized shops have some kind of curved shim to gap the magnet/ flywheel?
They could, but a credit card will work. Cheaper anyway!
Nope they use either a .004 feeler gauge or the ole trusty business card
i bought a coil for a briggs stratton and the box flap was used to set the gap. .010

How you test the oil level sw on a E-TON VIPER 50 ST , PS-50 .I GET NO SPARK I speck this switch . I try but can't get any kind of reading on it .
You have 2 put a half of stick of dynamite in the gas tank n wire it to the ignition coil it would help it crank right over

So what about the rust on the fly-wheel?
Wm Cottrell shouldn't matter it isn't making a connection it's just an alternating magnetic current
I found this to be very useful, Thanks
Hey what's up bro listen how come I replaced Ignition module and I'm only getting spark once in a while

Bad-ass. Do you have a link to that last tester?
4:22 Too funny. I know you guys weren't trying to be funny in this video, but you were hilarious.
Very helpful! Thank you so much!
I think I met this guy down at Rural King! Nice video!
I wonder if anyone makes any neodymium rare earth replacement magnets any small engines.
why my lawnmower is breaking brand new ignition coils
thanks I think this is what is wrong withmy mower Im going to give it a shot when i get home thank you !
Gracias efectivamente funciona como he descrito en el comentario anterior.
Good vid. BTW how s the diet going?
Nice job man.
Thanks, very helpful!
What's the language?
hammershigh english
Thanks! Great video!
I had a good laugh. he dose not need that tester for spark, he is the tester!
1:10 minute intro?
I have a throttle issue. I think I got spark, but a spark doesn't mean magneto isn't bad. I'd sure like to get my wood chipper working. I didn't break flywheel key.
Right, pull it check everything. with this wood chipper it's pull, and pull, no start like a merry go round.
What language do you speak?
Audience, at 10:16 Hot dam, that shit electrocuted me...LMAO...Smh
A good informative video.
Nice work. Thumbs up from me
Thank you !
Thanks a lot this was real hepfull
Real helpfull thank you !!!
Hey WhizKid, May I suggest a shorter intro?
No kidding, I stopped watching at the 1 minute mark.
You're gonna do some praying for me boy and you better pray good!
Would love for you to work on my mower but I don't know where Mayberry is.
good work,, thanks bud
Chromatrix1 ,
Thank you for the comment .

Awesome. thanks good video
That accent is so awsome!
Why didn't you just take a simple Ohm test reading on the magneto to start with, if you thought it was fried?
This is for Normal Folks that doesn't have a lot of things to test with. Some People don't even know how to use a Multi-Meter :/
it taint no good if u caint see a strong spark
Man just stick a good spark plug in the HT lead and put the spark plug to earth if you a spark a good blueish spark then it's ok if not then its buggered mate no need for you to spend money on testers
