Becky, if you keep a cored raw cabbage in your freezer, when you take it out and let it thaw the leaves will be soft and easy to peel and roll just like when it's been cooked.

My grandmother made stuffed cabbage with ladies in church for their harvest supper. A group of ladies would sit and roll for days in order to have enough. One day my grandmother wanted to make the stuffed cabbage but didn’t have time to roll them so she layered up a casserole dish with layers of sauce, cabbage and meat/rice filling etc. came out great !
We did that for my wedding! :) We had an assembly line going - 2 aunts boiling cabbing/separating leaves, 1 cutting out the stem, one plopping in the filling and one rolling! Now, I make cabbage roll casserole for my dad for his birthday and father's day every year with strips of cabbage and meatballs! Rolls are way too much work for me!! I love your grandmother ~ such a smart lady!!
I saw a prepper put a head of cabbage in the freezer. When she took it out and it thawed the leaves were soft and pealed off. I haven’t tried it yet but thought you might want to google it.
I’m all about quick and easy these days so I make an “unstuffed cabbage” casserole with cooked Italian sausage, raw rice, onions, bell pepper, shredded cabbage, canned tomatoes/sauce and chicken broth; cook covered for about an hour, and serve with Parmesan and crusty bread!

I make unstuffed cabbage roll casserole, have been making it for years and it is so much easier to make. Someone gave me a recipe book when I married 50 years ago and this recipe was in it.
My husband is Polish. I do not add eggs to the filling but do saute salt pork with the onions that I add to the filling. We just add crushed tomatoes over the top. My sister in law and mother in law use tomato soup as their sauce but my husband likes the tomatoes as the sauce. They are good no matter what you use.
My mom had never made this until my Dad told her how wonderful his mother's was. Mom made it once and the next time, she showed us her new recipe. Same filling. Shredded cabbage. Same sauce. Casserole dish. That's how we do stuffed cabbage in my house now too. :)
Tip for people who have issues with cabbage "gas". I learned this trick while living in Germany. You can freeze your entire cabbage or you can pull the leaves from the head, and then thaw it out and then use it. I thought it was crazy but it worked.

My mother (85) has always been a great cook, but my favorite thing she would always make for me was stuffed cabbage. Not that I can't make my own, of course, but nothing beats mama's.
I grew up eating cabbage rolls and we still eat them today. Instead of homemade sauce, we always used Campbell's tomato soup. Oh. . . and no sugar or raisins.
I highly recommend making cabbage rolls with a head of sour cabbage if you can find it (I find it in the regular produce section of my store...it’s basically sour kraut in a head. It takes your rolls to the next level.
Got to tell you I just love those funny faces when you taste things!!! I tried your breakfast burritos recipe but instead of eggs I made them into regular burritos (ground beef and veggies). Girl I ate them all!! Great way to use leftovers. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Stuffed cabbage is one of our family recipes - my grandmother passed it down to all of us. We add carrots to the filling to make it a little sweeter (instead of the raisins). I've totally made it w/ ground chicken or turkey, and my mother has done sausage a few times. We roast them in the oven in the big roasting pan, and served over mashed potatoes. Yum!
I serve with mashed potatoes on the side with my stuffed cabbage rolls too and I put sour kraut in the bottom of my pan with my sauce before baking cabbage rolls and on top of the cabbage rolls with my sauce. This is how my family has always made.them. I come from a family who's ancestors are Slovak, my Grandma and mother always made stuffed cabbage, cabbage fried with onions and garlic in butter with kluski noodles and perogies with fried onions and butter too. All such yummy comfort food!!
I have had the grater thing for five years. I use it when I need to grate lots of whatever needs grating. It sticks to my enamel table top well. I cut potatoes with the slicer part. Works wonderfully and fast. I love the grater thing.
I love stuffed cabbage but really hate the boiling cabbage part. Since I only make it once a year of Christmas eve, I'm doing 3 or 4 heads. Also, the core is very good. My mom & me are the only ones we know of that chop up the core & tiny leaves and fry them in butter & onions. They have to steam for a few minutes before the frying to ensure that they are soft. We love them more than the stuffed cabbage.
You can always use the cut cabbage you use for Cole slaw. Layer your sauce, shredded cabbage and meat balls, and dinner is on the way to being done! My family loves the flavor the cabbage adds, but I'm the only one who loves the cabbage. I make it on New Year's Day.
I have never made cabbage rolls - much too much work. I do make cabbage roll casserole - cook the hamburg add the rice and onions, chop up the cabbage, add everything together, add tomato sauce and bake it all in the oven. Delicious! Ive been wanting to learn how to make cabbage rolls for a while. As a visual learner it really helps to see someone make it, even if it is a simple process. Thank you!
I made these for a single elder just home from the hospital. They really enjoyed them. All in one meat, starch, and veg. Made in single serving sizes for her to use as desired. She really raved. She could freeze or keep in fridge as needed. Precooking allowed a microwave option or sized for toaster oven.
Hi Becky, I make a lazy stuffed cabbage. I core out the middle of the cabbage leaving a cavity for the filling. I cover the opening with several whole leafs to keep the filling moist. It’s more like a stuffed cabbage head . I cover the cabbage with my sauce and bake until the filling is cooked and the cabbage is tender. I bake the cabbage in a Dutch oven so that all sides of the cabbage is evenly cooked. I slice the cabbage in wedges and cover with sauce. It doesn’t take as long to prepare and it is a pretty dish.

Use raw rice when making cabbage rolls , as they cook it absorbs the fats and liquid from the filling , I was also taught to cover the rolls with chicken stock after they have been placed in a baking dish . The tomato sauce is added after .

Stuffed cabbage was always on the menu at our family’s gatherings . They are cooked in a big roaster the cores and spines are added to the sauce for flavor . Now I want to make stuffed cabbage .
I love stuffed cabbage! A trick I learned a long time ago is to freeze your cabbage. When it thaws, you'll be able to peel the leaves off easily. I can't wait to try your sauce and filling :)
We make it too but we fry pork meat bell peppers ounons 🌶add the Rice and sauce inside the meat and veggies then we wrap it in the cabbage it’s called sadmay
If you ever go to Toledo OH. There is a place called Tony Paco's. It is a Hungarian place famous for hot dogs because of the tv show MASH. But they make the best cabbage rolls.
I love that you're using an Asian soup spoon to measure ingredients. I keep one in all my flour/sugar/dry ingredients containers, they're so convenient!
Hi Becky, if you inventory your pantry now then create a spread sheet think how organized you'll be during harvest. Also perhaps plastic jars for cupboard items (black pepper) then you break less and have more jars for canning, just a thought. I'll try adding ground raisins to my cabbage roll sauce, sounds interesting.
Becky my dad taught me how to make stuffed cabbage. Since my dad as been gone for over 20 years, I have made it couple times lately because I love it and it reminds me of my dad. When I make it I change up the spices I use, depending on what I have on hand at the time. I use ground beef and rice, but occasionally I have put in bell peppers for a different taste.
I am far too lazy to do cabbage rolls---lol. I do a thick cabbage soup instead but it's just me here so it's OK. I don't stuff peppers either; it's a thick stuffed pepper soup and it's just as good but a lot less work. Can't wait to see the new floors!! Your house must be excited--new roof and now floors!! It's all good 😊
Amazing how good your nails look because I know you are a gardener and a cook! Never knew whole wheat needs more time in the blender. You really can see the outcome in the video.
I used to make cabbage rolls the exact way you do but finally thought it was to labor intensive. I just cut the cabbage now and put everything in a big pot and cook it that way. I will have to try the Rasins though, I never heard of that before. I would love to see what you need in your pantry and what you do need to plant for the year, if anyone else wants to see it also. Thanks, I love watching all video's you upload.
They look delicious. I can remember as a child my Mom would spend a day making tons of homemade cabbage rolls and stuffed peppers to freeze for dinners in the future. They always tasted incredible.😍
My family has only recently discovered you and we love you! My 4yo daughter loves to watch you cook. She tells me we need to grow those things or go to the store so we can cook like you. I love the garden videos too. Been growing and preserving since I was a kid. Hi and thank you from North Carolina 😊
I agree 100 percent about the fresh tomato on the pizza... YUMMY! 😁 Also, if you want to cut a bunch of cherry tomatoes quicker, put them on your cutting board, then put a small lid on top and hold it down while you slice through them horizontally. It works great.
Becky, you can freeze without sauce on tray and then bag them for space or make the entire meal in a 13 x 9 or smaller and freeze. I usually freeze without sauce then build will cool sauce before storing. Bump heat to 425 and try for 45 min to 60. Thanks for sharing
My favorite pizza o Bo is fresh basil, cherry or grape tomatoes, onions, sliced garlic & fresh mozzarella. I like it both with sauce or just olive oil. Sometimes for a quick single I use flat bread or pita. And like you, I put the tomatoes on top to roast. Also try with sun dried tomatoes as they are so sweet.
My family is Hungarian and we make it a little different. Never pre cooked the sauce. We used heads of cabbage that was picked in the barrels with sour Krout. It was all raw onions and rice. Seems simpler and just let it simmer slowly.
The stuffed cabbage would be lovely as you've cooked it (in a shallower dish) then grated cheese sprinkled over the top and put under the grill for a few minutes until crispy and golden 😋
Cabbage rolls are on top of the list when I do freezer meals. I also freeze pirogies, and make borscht and Cabbage Roll Soup for canning. The first thing I always do when starting new traditional dishes, is find out which of the traditional ‘comfort’ foods are good for canning/freezing. We’d be lost without Butter Chicken and Rice or Tandoori meat skewers in our freezer these days, my sons (25 & 28) wouldn’t know what to do for a midnight snack…lol
Stuffed cabbage rolls, YES!!! My husband’s family is Polish, and my mother in law makes the most amazing cabbage rolls or better known as gołabki. And yes, they are definitely a great freezer meal!
@@carolynmills513 Hi Carolyn! My mother in law cooks them then freezes them. Since you don’t like a lot of leftovers ,what you can also do is portion them out before freezing! So you can either get small lunch size containers and put maybe two rolls in each with sauce, cover and freeze. They keep quite nicely in the freezer. When I’m ready to eat, I put them in a medium sized sauce pot, add a little water, flame on low to medium heat and they thaw out beautifully! They taste as if they were freshly cooked. I hope that helps 😊
@@April_K75 thank you so much!! I have small aluminum pans that I use for just that reason. 2 enchiladas, 1 piece of lasagna, etc. Its so hard to cook for one! Adding a head of cabbage to my grocery list. I've never heard of adding raisins...do you do this?
FYI. If you use a flat roaster pan, we use the oblong ones, you can put the rolls in one layer. Cooks more evenly. I'm from Pittsburgh where there is a large Polish community. Always a roaster pan.
Known as cabbage rolls growing up. I use cabbage and sauerkraut. Tomato soup is a great alternative for sauce. Wonderful flavor with sauerkraut and Campbell’s tomato soup.
Becky, you should get one of those rubber mats to put over by your stove to see if it will help when you drop a glass jar if it would keep it from breaking.
In Slovenia, we make the cabbage rolls with sauerkraut - so whole heads of cabbage are preserved and the leaves soften, so you don't need to precook the cabbage and it adds a nice acidity. :)
@@ChristinaVVM There's a sort of thin sauce but definitely not as tomato-y! It's more to do with the liquid from the meat and the sauerkraut and maybe paprika? Idk. :D
I’m vegan and I always watch her cooking videos because I can always adapt in someway. For any vegans that may be watching this you can substitute bulgur wheat for her hamburger in this recipe. You could also use lentils but reduce the amount of times the lentils cooked in the sauce, etc. Put the lentils in more at the last second. This can totally be a delicious vegan meal! Oh, you can also use crumbled “butler soy curls“ in place of the hamburger. For those of you on a low fat diet like I am… You can “water sauté” the onions in the beginning! Always love your recipes Becky!
Awesome timing with the cabbage roll recipe! We have cabbages in the garden that are heading up really nicely so this will be on the list of how to use them. Thanks Becky ☺

Yum! This has me craving my grandmas cabbage rolls! Basically meat loaf filling in the rolls (no raisins), covered in tomato sauce/tomatoes and topped in sauerkraut. Great idea to line the pan with cabbage! We did this too a lot of the time.
I grew up eating cabbage rolls. I can’t wait to see what the raisins taste like in sauce. I use whatever I like for filling sausage mixed with beef or beef. Seasoning also change but always garlic and onions. I usually almost purée the onions do to kids. I always add fresh lemon juice to sauce. I cook in oven, stovetop or crockpot depending on time of year. We serve on mashed potatoes. They do freeze well either cooked or raw.
Becky, if you keep a cored raw cabbage in your freezer, when you take it out and let it thaw the leaves will be soft and easy to peel and roll just like when it's been cooked.
Does that help retain the nutritional value of the cabbage at all? Just curious thank you!

i was just going to give the same advice lol

Being Hungarian my mother made this often. My mom added a ham hock to the pot while simmering the cabbage rolls in the sauce. Just a great flavorful dish! Enjoy!
Exactly or adding smoke sausage kolbász
stuffed cabbage was the very first dish my polish grandmother taught me how to make. this dish hold a very special place in my heart ❤️ your recipe looks very authentic, you did a fantastic job! 😊
Stuffed cabbage was always on the menu at our family’s gatherings . They are cooked in a big roaster the cores and spines are added to the sauce for flavor . Now I want to make stuffed cabbage .
I just love it when you see Becky Raste her food and see her eyes light up just gives me pure joy😁🥰
I love stuffed cabbage! A trick I learned a long time ago is to freeze your cabbage. When it thaws, you'll be able to peel the leaves off easily. I can't wait to try your sauce and filling :)
I order King Arthur Flour’s parchment sheets. They are a great quality and it’s employee owned.
YAYYYYYYYY! A new video to watch on my lunch break which is NOW,,,, Keep up the good work, Becky! You are so much fun to watch!
Yes! Please do an inventory of your pantry.
I love cabbage rolls. I’ve never used raisins.
Yes Inventory!!!
Have you tried the unstuffed cabbage recipe? Less time and just as good.
It's all good 😊
That sounds yummy
Amazing how good your nails look because I know you are a gardener and a cook! Never knew whole wheat needs more time in the blender. You really can see the outcome in the video.
Try immersion blending the onions into the roast braising liquid. All kinds of yum!
Similar to crack slaw.
I make cabbage rolls quite often and they do freeze beautifully ! Love your videos !
I have an electric “Saladshooter” that is like that. It makes it so easy to grate and slice things. I love it.
Oh honey thank you for showing us everything!! Lol!! We are all “graceful” lol! Love it 🥰 (PS: I’ll be trying that cabbage!)
I agree 100 percent about the fresh tomato on the pizza... YUMMY! 😁 Also, if you want to cut a bunch of cherry tomatoes quicker, put them on your cutting board, then put a small lid on top and hold it down while you slice through them horizontally. It works great.
Can even use a plate to hold them
Becky, you can freeze without sauce on tray and then bag them for space or make the entire meal in a 13 x 9 or smaller and freeze.
I usually freeze without sauce then build will cool sauce before storing. Bump heat to 425 and try for 45 min to 60.
Thanks for sharing
Hi Becky I love Chuck roast too I like to make chimichangas out of the left overs
You are amazing. Being a veggie/fruit gardener and a cook I really enjoy watching you so much. Congratulations on your success.
The stuffed cabbage would be lovely as you've cooked it (in a shallower dish) then grated cheese sprinkled over the top and put under the grill for a few minutes until crispy and golden 😋
What yummy meals! It amazes me just how hard you work getting things done daily. I am pooped just watching you! ❤🙏
I absolutely love your big eyes when you taste and love something! Truly let’s me know it was goo!❤️🙏❤️🙏☮️
That episode of Martha and Big Martha making stuffed cabbage is still one of my favorites. I love Martha Stewart. And I love your videos 💕Cathy
Stuffed cabbage rolls, YES!!! My husband’s family is Polish, and my mother in law makes the most amazing cabbage rolls or better known as gołabki. And yes, they are definitely a great freezer meal!
Do you freeze raw or pre-cooked? I'm just one person and don't make many meals like that bc I'm not really fond of a lot of leftovers.
@@carolynmills513 You’re so welcome. It truly is a great meal! I’ve heard of people adding raisins, but my family does not. 😊
I found your channel last night. I love how you are talking like you are telling a good friend about everything. So nice ♥️
Yes, would love to see a before and after of the pantry.
FYI. If you use a flat roaster pan, we use the oblong ones, you can put the rolls in one layer. Cooks more evenly. I'm from Pittsburgh where there is a large Polish community. Always a roaster pan.
a mixture of tomato juice and tomato soup makes a great sauce as well for cabbage rolls. We make them a few times a year. :)
I have this tool, The Tumbler... I love it!
Known as cabbage rolls growing up. I use cabbage and sauerkraut. Tomato soup is a great alternative for sauce. Wonderful flavor with sauerkraut and Campbell’s tomato soup.
This is how I make mine as well! The sauerkraut add the tartness and the tomato soup adds some sweetness.
No tomato sauce, right? Just sauerkraut? My Godmother makes them like that and I can’t find anyone else anywhere who does it without tomato sauce.
@@ChristinaVVM There's a sort of thin sauce but definitely not as tomato-y! It's more to do with the liquid from the meat and the sauerkraut and maybe paprika? Idk. :D
I was taught to put my head of cabbage in the freezer for cabbage rolls , then thaw night before, they are so easy to roll snd no burnt fingers .
Artichoke hearts go really well on bbq pizza along with the onions and tomatoes. Yum yum.
I freeze our cabbage than defrost it cut the cent like u did first as defrost it falls a apart oh yes freez then I make them ahead buy Tin tray out three in with those leds dinner ready I cook them so all I hav ti do warm them up
Yum! This has me craving my grandmas cabbage rolls! Basically meat loaf filling in the rolls (no raisins), covered in tomato sauce/tomatoes and topped in sauerkraut. Great idea to line the pan with cabbage! We did this too a lot of the time.
I would love to see an inventory of the pantry
I grew up eating cabbage rolls. I can’t wait to see what the raisins taste like in sauce. I use whatever I like for filling sausage mixed with beef or beef. Seasoning also change but always garlic and onions. I usually almost purée the onions do to kids. I always add fresh lemon juice to sauce. I cook in oven, stovetop or crockpot depending on time of year. We serve on mashed potatoes. They do freeze well either cooked or raw.
Freeze, hmm. Good to know! Thank you.
