The bike is too big for her. A bike fit is not only limited to contact points, while that's the fun stuff, bike fits are supposed to work with the rider to find out bike size, frame angles, fore aft, as well. as centralizing the rider's weight. Not everyone is built to ride a drop bar bike and not all bikes work with everyone's body dimensions.

    • @thepleasureroom9646

@@thepleasureroom9646 I would tend to agree, the stem is borderline short which usually is a sign of the frame being too big. A smaller frame and a 90mm stem make for a more stable ride, particularly going downhill at 70+km

That bike is so weird. The reach on the frame is a bit long relative to the stack, the bar reach is humongous. A bike like this should have 65-70mm reach bars. I want to smack the person who allowed this to be an out of the box set-up.

I’m guessing REI wants to stay away from suggesting that the bike a consumer buys off of the shelf isn’t probably going to fit properly- but unfortunately, stock bike set ups are rarely ideal for most people. She could probably benefit from a slightly shorter stem and probably narrower handlebars (though they never showed a head on camera shot). I’m sure off camera, Scott suggested some additional changes that would require purchasing additional components.

I wish there was some discussion on what size frame and components to purchase in the first place, especially if you are buying used or off the rack since budget limitations are a real factor for what people can choose from. I used to ride a hybrid bike as my main commuter for 5 years, but because of improper fit and posture I developed quadriceps tendonitis that was a bear to recover from. It makes me so afraid to purchase another bike for fear that I will be riding it wrong and hurt myself again. Where do I start? That would be helpful info to follow up with!

I have the same bike and went for a bike fit and we concluded that the bike does not fit me. The issue is with the front end - the bars cannot be raised because of the limited fork length and I was pitched downward, with a 4cm difference to make up. Elena, it looks like you’re having a similar problem but hopefully a shorter stem will fix that. I’m returning my bike so I can find a great fitting bike to ride part of the GDMBR in Montana in August.

Always pay attention too the size chart on the bike you will buy.
A bike where your height is at the maximum recommended size for the frame is a good fit.
If you are between sizes always go for the smallest size frame.

Yeah. I've bought a Diverge one year ago and I'm almost sure I asked for a 54 (that's what the website recommended me) and the shop owner delivered a 56. I feel a lot of neck and cervical pain, sometimes it's unbereable, and can also feel too much pressure on my wrists...and lately, I've tried to rotate the handlebar up a little, which feel akward.
I'm looking forward for a proper bike fit next month... hopefully will improve a lot these pains.

    • @bengt_axle

It is called a wheel-on trainer. There are several brands now and the resistance can be controlled on most models. Some even use fluid sloshing around a chamber inside the device to create resistance that resembles the road. You can find them on-line (Jensen, Amazon) or at bike shops. Be ware that they can be a bit noisy and will wear down your rear tire with use.

Just asking because I’ve never felt I need them in 50 years of bike riding. It seems like your foot is locked into position and you can’t vary your foot position in the slightest. It seems like more gear for Shimano to sell but most people don’t need.

You do not need to be fitted to your bike unless you plan on spending hours a day riding it. Get a bike that fits your general size and make adjustments on your own. Do not spend money on having someone to tell you how you should be riding. Most people get on road bikes and aren’t used to the position and so their body hurts and they think they need to be fitted when in reality they just need to be in better riding shape. If you are a casual rider do not spend your money on a bike fitting.
