The Bass was restored while Jaco was still alive & Jaco got the Bass back shortly before he fell asleep with it on a park bench (& that was the last he ever saw of it)
I don't understand the haters here. All the great musicians are ready to let you play with their instrument if you ask gently; I played on the bass from marcus miller in the netherlands after telling him that his bass had something special to sound so good. I played on his bass and it sounded crap because of my lack of technique.
Kevin Kaufman was the guy who restored it. I have pics of him delivering the bass back to Jaco post restoration. Jaco loved to compare his hands to other bass players & would hold his hands against those of other players. I got some pics of Jaco & Jonas doing it. JJaco also did this with a guy I know. He had very long fingers & could bend them into all manner of weird positions.
People are acting like Jonas was beating it with his fists. It's just a bit of slap bass. And it sounded great. Give it a rest. I don't see what the fuss is anyways. It's a great instrument, but ultimately is just some wood and metal. It's not Jaco's identity, talent, or improvisational skill. It's not his songs or the creativity and technique that he had. It's just wood and metal that happens to be well put together.
This is proof that the sound is in your HANDS. Note that Jonas didn't touch the bass controls and yet his sound is darker and fatter than the first player.
The sound on all string instruments depends (90%) on your left hand. If you are northpaw. Amateurs believing that it's all about their axe make the instrument industry living.
Jaco once said it's all a matter of knowing where to press, knowing exactly where the harmonics can be pulled out and how hard to press, and just let it sing
One of the very last Basses Jaco owned was a Guild Pilot Five string, I don't know if there are any recordings made where he uses it but that was a modern bass in what we now associate as being a modern bass.
For those of you wondering like I was, the bass player in the beginning is Mike bendy. He has a TH-cam channel under that name and I highly recommend you check it out.
Joco was the God of bass,,,just wish he was still here and hear him play a Warwick,,,,I LOVE Joco's old Fender J bass,,,but would love to see what he'd do with a Warwick,,Im sure it would be awesome
1. Jaco did slap on some occasions. 2. Slapping on fretless is very common. Also, fingerboard damage is caused when you string rounds on a uncoated board made from softer woods, in this case the board is rosewood. As long as rounds are strung on, whether you play fingers or slap, you will wear away the board. Preventing that requires a) coating b) switching to flats c) fingerboard with denser wood or material, e.g maple or ebony or carbon fiber
I believe it is the real thing. Robert Trujillo bought Jaco's bass a while back, and I think he had it restored. You can see at the beginning that he's pointing out different parts of the bass to Jonas, discussing the restoration.
Wonder if this was the trash can bass, the one Jaco smashed in Washington Sq park.... had a drummer i used to work with tell me that story, anyhow outstanding job by Kevin and the persons who helped him on this restoration. This instrument indeed is priceless ....
No joke I love the fact that it was restored but I think it would be so cool if it looked like it did in the 70s. That was when it had the real mojo imho
Nobody knows. It is probably the density of the wood but the tone did survive the thing being smashed by Jaco then put back together. The pickups are a bit hot. You can buy replicas from Seymour Duncan (who worked on the bass for Jaco)
I have pics of this bass pre- restoration. It was smashed to pieces, literally. Jaco must've really gone nuts on it. It's held together with maple veneers, front & back.
Jaco threw the bass into the Hiroshima sea, perhaps as the purest detachment that a musician of this category makes, however, it returned to life at the hands of a Japanese woman, Jaco, in order to continue delighting those who play it. , more than a bass a proof of deep heavenly goodness.
Very nice groove man ! It looks easy to play bass when you play, beautiful tone and melodies !!! By the way, Hi Rob !!! ;) Check out Under Ossana Ghost's music ;)
Jaco properly destroyed that bass. The fact that the guy who rebuilt it was able to do so is a testament to his skill as a luthier. www.groovemonster.de/content/img/lightbox/jaco-pastorius-bass-of-doom/jaco-pastorius-bass-of-doom-09.jpg www.groovemonster.de/content/img/lightbox/jaco-pastorius-bass-of-doom/jaco-pastorius-bass-of-doom-08.jpg
Well, as great of a player as Les Claypool is, his rendition of Stanley Clarke' "Silly Putty" just never did it for me, he played it right yet played it wrong. So, there is that.
That's silly, it's a living thing why entomb it. Jaco's family want it to be played which is why Rob takes it to things like this as well as playing it at the Metallica 30th shows. (he played a medley of Jaco stuff)
The bass was broken in many pieces, and took Kevin Kaufman 150 hours to put it back together. To cover the front that had a lot of seams from gluing parts together, he added a layer of tiger maple and also a laminated piece in the back of the headstock with an inscription of his own. It is the bass of doom indeed.
He destroyed it in '86, and yes, it is THE Bass of Doom. Only difference is Kevin Kaufman completely gave it a makeover in terms of looks and stuff, and added an inscription in the headstock that if I'm not wrong reads: "Custom redesigned for Jaco Pastorius, 1986" or something like that.
I couldn't imagine being there in front of the actual bass of doom. it does make me laugh a little that this is probably the first time a bass is more legendary than the players playing it lol
The BASS LIVES ON !!! NEW STYLES HAVE YOU SEEN STANLEY CLARKE PLAY AN ACOUSTIC BASS LIKE THIS? PHENOMENAL (2014) Stanley sounds better than ever, and he plays his acoustic bass similar to an electric these days. But he sounds better than anybody, so there you have it. COOL VID THX
+Jeff Papineau Give me some new links please. He sounds better than anybody for over 40 years now! But don't expect these guys to agree with you here. All the bass talk is just about ignoring Mr. Stanley Clarke who even has too act like an idiot sometimes to survive that jealous crowd that can't stand a young gifted and black prototype, although they would forgive him the skin and the size if he wasn't so well educated, versatile and friendly at the same time. That kills the bastards. God made him a miracle. Now you suffer from it or enjoy the ride with him. It's your choice. God bless ya! :) Stanley is the Jimi Hendrix of both Double bass and Electric Bass. If he showed it more, he would be as dead as Jimi. Jaco died for the very negative side of his character, not because other people's hate or something like that. Too much of a cult it has become because everyone thinks, if i practice hard enough, one day I will be able to stand in front of Him (Jaco the father) and then I will become immortal too. That day of course will never happen. With Stanley the battle is over in the core. No way you are going to be that good is the info you get, so shut up you fuck! That's why they tend too ignore him and talk too much about mediocracy. Stanley is the work and the question of God or Nature, not a question of ambition. That's why he is so overshadowed with imbeciles. Cheers! :)
I'm not a bass player. Please explain what the deal is with 'slapping someone else's bass'? Surely just another technique or am I wrong - is there some bass etiquette I'm not aware of?
Don't forget, if victor wooten did NOT considered the bass (in a way) as rythmic and drum, (he say himself) I don't think he would have play the same way.
I dont believe thats its the original bass of doom, BECAUSE !! everyone have seen these bass , even, when was broke ,etc, never ever put it all paint out, just wood productes for glue now a days are really good.
Jaco destroyed it after one of his shows, he shattered it into pieces. He sent it back to his luthier to put back together, Jaco liked the natural look of the wood better so it was kept instead of respraying it back to sunburst.
The Bass was restored while Jaco was still alive & Jaco got the Bass back shortly before he fell asleep with it on a park bench (& that was the last he ever saw of it)
Jonas plays it like he's owned it for years.
He has owned it for years. Have you seen the live shows she did with Shawn Lane?
The performance of those 2 individuals was jaw dropping.
@@jackb348 I could be wrong brotha but i believe Mr. Trujillo owns it and has owned it for years since its restoration
He's owning the Music, you're right! ✊🏻❤️
@@DougieD_Funki might be wrong but i think trujilo gave it to felix pastorius a couple years back
I knew Trujillo owned the bass, didn't think he'd bring it out. badass!!

i have the delivery picture too. how did kevin (my local luthier) get the bass of doom to look like this? it looks like a new bass to me.
I would give anything to give that bass a try... Jaco is my hero!!!!!
Legend Hellborg.
I like Jonas' playing. Good feel.

Lol I thought the same thing. This damn stick survived Jaco Pastorius's beatings, it'll be fine.

for my simple-bassist-mind-side, this moment is close to legendary

Framus & Warwick hey guys, what's the name of that funky song you use as your intro?
That’s just incredible.

Jonas Hellborg is a true Bass Artist! Amazing soul in his playing. It's beyond chops and licks. Great stuff!

Can you see the orhet guy in the shirt, with the mustache? He is Felix Pastorious...

I think you didn't get what I said. I never said that slapping a fretless is wrong. I said that it damages the fretboard.
fretless basses can still be played using the slap bass style.

Jaco once told Marcus Miller that he knew how to slap but he never really liked doing it
You might wanna give Les Claypool a call then. You know, to tell him he's playing the bass wrong.

D'Addario strings? Come on, everyone knows Jaco ALWAYS used Rotos!
In the 70s and until the early 80s Rotosound was the superior strings.
These days Flex Steels is the best strings.
Which part is the original : I don’t recognise it at all
Trujillo's blood pressure raises at 1:47
But, does it?
is this the bass jaco threw and destroyed after his america the beautiful solo in 84? did they put it back together?
Yes and yes.

No, Squier and fender do though, you can get this tone out of any fretless jazz
And it's a Fender.
