When I was younger I used to talk mythically about the times that Hellborg played with McLaughlin but it was impossible to find. WIth the magic of the internet how lucky we all are to have this available so easily. I love Hellborgs later work, with Shawn Lane, Ginger Baker, Buckethead... and it's great to hear him early in his career and know where he's going. He's had several brilliant solo albums. Thanks for the upload.
Some people here don't get it! Jonas WAS what Wooten is Today, even "Worse"!!! I used to go and hear Jonas Live at small clubs back in the 80's,Mahavishnu in -85,I think it was,and I got to speak to him briefly around -86. He was really a Nice and humble guy, and at the Time,he was one of the Most exciting bass players there was! His advanced slapping was unheard of!!! He also did his Chordal playing, And a few other things too! He was the First to take these things to that advance level!
One of the most badass bass players alive! I haven't seen him in ages but luckily got to see him back in the day with McLaughlin a bunch of times and he was nothing but absolutely brilliant at each show. I see some people below putting him down.. Well.. McLaughlin only plays with the best of the best and he sure loved Jonas!! Anyone know what he's doing nowadays?
I stayed in a bed and breakfast in Sweden he was running with his partner back in 2019, absolutely lovely bloke and a total coincidence I ended up in the place
@@MrWildcountry McLaughlin was always super nice if you met him. I have some great pics with me and him that I cherish from about 25-30 years ago after a show he did at The Bottom Line here in NY. Got to speak with him a couple times too and he was so kind and humble.
@@nunsofanarchy Oh wow. I didn't know he was running a B&B there. That's good to hear that he was really lovely. I think I'd have a million questions for him if I met him. May have to look up that place in case I do go to Sweden sometime. Do you remember the name of it?
Jonas later started playing acoustic bass guitar, and to take this instrument to a new higher level, And then went into Indian music! He has Always been Way ahead! Since he first started!
@YSBCITTAR Billy Sheehan is a great rock bass player. Most jazz musicians wipe the floor with their rock counterparts, but it's still a matter of taste whose music you like better.
Why is elegant punk so expensive? It took me years to get it and its my best bass album. The drone gives me shivers. Anyway, 70 dollars is allot of cash.
Yes Eddie, we can all se you don't have a life. But if you ever stop posting your many many bad opinions under one youtube video, just go listen to (any)one of Hellborg's albums and you'll get the awesomeness of his music vision and playing. Besides that, I find his looks here fascinating. Intense!
You seriously aren't referring to this video when you said that? What do you think he is doing right now? Using a pick? I bet you're the kind of guy who doesn't like distortion on guitars? It's not really the guitar you're hearing!
lol....Hellborg may be the best player to walk the earth....and I guarantee he could out play any of those guys listed (those still alive) in any genre of music without even thinking...you are trying to compare good / great players with a virtuoso....it doesn't work....Hellborg is on another level...you either get it or you don't
Great Bass player, MAJOR chip on his shoulder! 4/27/97 he told me Stanley Clarke has lousy tone and is not a great bassist, and then started to tell me Jeff Berlin wasn't very good either....when I asked him about the contribution Berlin made to the ONE OF A KIND lp from BRUFORD he shrugged his shoulders and said "well, that is different." I didn't hesitate to tell him he is talking out of both sides of his mouth.
I just don't get it . Sounds dreadful Now as it did way back then , he's as bad as George Anderson from shakattack . But he's on the stage wiv one of the most brilliant guitarist on the planet . Don't get me wrong I love funk bass . This just isn't oh woe
All these guys who slap the bass think they are actually playing a bass.Finger style is the way to go.No picks,no banging on the bass. It sounds stupid.

Maybe not too many people would agree, but I consider Mahavishnu Orchestra’s 80’s lineup pretty badasss
Slap bass at it's very best! Cheers from Sweden! And hot damn (!) - give us more! Peace! God bless!

This video should be called "Bass Face Greatest Hits".

What a bassman !!!! Swede ?
Yes and not very popular in Sweden. Maybe due to his "acting".
@TakashiYamato55 hää, was heißt das?

Anyone know what make of bass Mr. Hellborg is playing, please? I love it, sounds great!
I have one of them! They are pretty rare though. It's Jonas Hellborg bass guitars designed by him!
There were some serious shrooms going at the backstage :D

He looks a bit like Wilko Johnson!
At 1:00 "This is kinda going nowhere now. I'm losing the audience. TIME TO SLAP!"
The title should be changed to: How to get your bass face on.

Because i don't have any slap stuff? I'm actually pretty good at it. I just think it's so over done.
Is that flea's lil brother?
This video almost makes me want to stop playing.

Slam Stewart invented the style before electricity.
little wing slap fest. oh god, this is bad.
Another frustrated guitar player.
this is probably the most annoying piece of music ever played...
